DESCRIPTION

Bird - for alto saxophone and tape "Beauty will be convulsive, and if not, will not be" André Breton. ... Intended to use all means and methods that, at that time exists in the Electro-acoustic Studio in Boulogne Conservatory in France where I worked composing a piece for instrument and tape. In order to achieve consistency, the sounds of the tape had to be in close relationship with the instrument, hence the sound of the tape has to be taken almost entirely by the saxophone; the unit has to come from this fact, the diversity has to come from the sounds treatments providing by the Studio at that time in 1987 for example the sounds available from an old analog synthesizer or concrete sounds from multiple sources variously filtered, transformed ... "saxophonized" ... The piece sets the playing between two extremes and its various intermediate grades: The affinity on one hand and the antagonism between the instrument and the tape on the other, sometimes the saxophone play a dialogue with himself like a mirror of the same instrument, sometimes is a struggle between them. ¿Bird? We cannot stop thinking about the great Charlie Parker and his alto saxophone who revolutionized the way to play this instrument. Moreover, in the last section of the piece is a reference to Olivier Messiaen and his ornithology, except that here, the bird on the tape represents a kind of electronic "heavy bird", sort of evil being who challenges the other bird; the same saxophonist, both are a metaphor for the battle between the bird "caged" on the tape and the "free-bird" the living bird is the instrumentalist owner of spontaneity in execution.
