• Explore techniques for effective trainingthrough storytelling
Who are We?
Effective Training
What they know pales in comparison to how they learn.
Effective Training
• Adult Learning Theory for the Modern Student
• Storytelling: Making Training Memorable
• Effective Remote Training
• System Training
• The Gamification of Learning
But first!
• Break up into Teams! (these will be your teams for the remainder of today’s session)
• Once in teams you will have 1 minute to discuss and select a team name
• One person from each team will write the name of the team at the top of one of the available flipcharts
Activity!Tell us a story!

• The “-gogy” discussion
• Teaching in Three dimensions (VAK)

Trainer/Trainee Roles:
To be an effective trainer will require mental and emotional dexterity to engage the different types of
learners in the training session
Trainee Roles

• Wants to control the environment through directions and rules.
Trainer Role: Expert• Primary objective is delivering information
• Often uses handouts/supplemental materials

and train via emotion
• Utilizes and relies heavily on personal experience
Trainer Role: Facilitator• Wants to create an educational
environment that is desired by the trainee
• Seeks to personalize training
Trainer Role: Ego-Ideal• Trains through energy and excitement
• Seeks to inspire and motivate

• Encourages participation
• Communicates personal wants and needs

Trainer/Trainee Roles:
Being flexible with your style and presentation will allow you to reach a greater amount of learners
with increased efficiency
• Storytelling: Making Training Memorable
Storytelling: Making Training Memorable
Training isn’t passing information along from one person to another…
…it is preparing someone to gain their own knowledge through techniques and stories
that originate in the classroom.
Storytelling: Making Training Memorable
• We Repeat What We Know
• The Art of the Spoken Word
Why?
The use of stories in the learning environment can be one of the most powerful instructional techniques in your
arsenal. It can help you get the learners’ attention and aid with the retention of course information.
Most forms of communication we are involved in as humans centers around storytelling
Why?
The audience moves from listening to visualization in order to make sense of and relate to the story being told.
Why are we bad at this?
In the classroom, it was abundantly clear that the students who received the highest grades for their reports were the ones who pleased the teacher by demonstrating how much
they knew.
But in training and presentations, that model of “showing that you did all your homework” is really pretty
inappropriate. And that’s for good reason:
In school, our work as students was graded by someone who knew more about the subject than we did namely, the teacher.
When explaining something that is complex or robust, often simplicity is the key.
If you can tell your whole story in one sentence, you will be better equipped to explain each detail of it individually.
How do We Get Better?
Activity!“Put it on a Bumper Sticker”
So what does this have to do with Training?
Why does nearly every movie have a love story in it?
Everyone can relate to it in some way, shape, or form!
So what does this have to do with Training?
We remember and we invest in what we can relate to; our memories work by associating information with
ideas/events/emotions.
Love is one of the most powerful and basic, so movie-makers use that against us. We will sit through a bad story
just to see what happens to the characters!

The Art of the Spoken Word
How We Communicate
• Words Matter!
• Be careful of saying what you don’t mean!
• Protect the Shield!
Re-Learn How to Communicate
Top 5 Power Words according to Yale University

How We Communicate
In our own way, we are all Improv Actors!
• “On the Fly” we have to be:• Useful• Thoughtful• Careful• Meaningful
All the World’s a Stage!
• Improv Tips & Tricks!• Don’t Deny• You can look good if you make your
partner look good• Don’t interrupt!• Replace “yes but” with “yes and”
All the World’s a Stage!
• Mirror what the other person said
• Don’t over think it
• Replace “should” with “could”

Effective Remote Training
Effective Remote Training
• Use the Tools!
• Think like a TV Director
• The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
Effective Remote Training
Use The Tools!• Online Meeting Tools
• Chat• Polling• Emoticons
• Webcams!
• Keep them guessing
Effective Remote Training
Think like a TV Director
• “Head on a swivel”
• Short Attention Spans
• Angles and Interest
• What is a “Hybrid Training Session”?
• A training session where some participants are attending in person and some are attending via teleconference or Online Meeting
• Although these techniques are useful in a “Hybrid” situation, adopting many of the practices as a Remote Trainer will vastly improve online training sessions
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
• Awareness• Making a remote participant feel considered is an important
but difficult task to accomplish in a meeting environment.
• Involvement• Involving various participants assists with overall awareness
and ensures that everyone stays engaged in the meeting.
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
• Awareness• Provide various opportunities for remote
participants to add to conversations by asking direct questions• Allow time for un-muting and speaker phone pauses
• Think of and address the telephone as the participant(s) that are involved remotely. • Make “eye” contact
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
• Involvement • The easiest way to keep remote attendees engaged
is to provide a task or role to play in the meeting. • Consider various personalities when delegating
various tasks/roles
• Allowing a remote participant to lead a conversation or control a Webex ensures that they will be engaged in the meeting and feel included in the group
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
• Environment• Be aware that side conversation cannot be heard by
participants on the phone, and can leave them feeling left out
• Noise can become a major obstacle to effective communication for those joining a meeting on the phone• Typing, Paper Shuffling, Physical Movement, etc.
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
Use Webcams• Ask Remote Participants to use their Webcams so they
can be seen• Just for introductions/greetings if preferred• Can use Headshots in lieu of live images
• Use a Webcam in the meeting room so remote participants can see the environment
• Point a webcam at the group or at the primary speaker so remote participants are brought into the room visually
The Art of the Hybrid Training Session
Screen Sharing• Ask remote participants to be the one whose screen is
being shared• Or ask them to “drive”
• If there is no content to share, share a whiteboard and allow everyone the ability to annotate.
System Training
System Training
• The “Why?” is the Story
• Focus on Relationships
• To do is to know
System Training
The “Why?” is the Story
• Teaching someone which button to press isn’t enough, you have to teach them why that button at that time is important
• If you can explain the “why”, you teach people to find the answers rather than just remembering them
System Training
Focus on Relationships
• System training can get very complicated very quickly; focus on how each piece relates to another
• Build on previous knowledge by creating relationships throughout the system
System Training
To do is to know
• Failure is always an option
• “Those who can…...”
The Gamification of Learning
The Gamification of Learning
• “I’m not any good at games”
• There’s an App for That
• The Power of Public Praise
The Gamification of Learning
“I’m not any good at games”
• Gamification isn’t about playing games
• Games can play a role, but are not the focus
The Gamification of Learning
There’s an App for That
• People are already conditioned for Gamification
• Use what they know
The Gamification of Learning
The Power of Public Praise
• Much of Gamification is about recognition:
• Recognize publicly
• Recognize genuinely
What Does it all Mean?
• Be Yourself, but Be Flexible
• Always be a learner
• Use what they know
Review of Objectives
