August 12, 2013, Issue 357 Top Names On Crossing To Country Here’s a part-one encapsulation of Friday’s “Crossing Over To Country” panel at the Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago (8/9): Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton: Is changing formats as simple as radio is radio, or is there a difference? WKHX/Atlanta’s Jenn Hobby: The name “Crossing Over To Country” is good for me, because it is a verb and I feel like I am still crossing over into Country and getting used to the format. In some sense radio is radio and listeners want to relate to you as a person and connect with you in your life. One of the surprises for me was that the audience in Country looks a lot like the Top 40 audience at our events and at concerts. The listeners are very much the same. LH: Bobby, you started in February. What has your experience been? Premiere’s Bobby Bones: I grew up in Arkansas, so I happen to have a background of being familiar with country music, but the only thing that we changed are the people that we talk to. We were unconventional as a syndicated Top 40 show; we were told we weren’t really a Top 40 show. We go to Country and we’re told we’re not a Country show. At first, it was like we burned down the village and everybody hated us. We really bottomed-out at a lot of stations. But I was born in the ‘80s and a lot of the artists were born in the ‘80s, too. They come in and talk about all kinds of music. Country music has a habit of playing to itself [but] you can be a country music fan and be a fan of every other thing as well. Our show is really broad. When I first moved over, I [thought] some of this music is terrible. I hated some of it. Top Names On Crossing To Country Here’s a part-one encapsulation of Friday’s “Crossing Over To Country” panel at the Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago (8/9): Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton: Is changing formats as simple as radio is radio, or is there a difference?

(continued on page 4)

Summit Offers Net & Networking Self-starters, go-getters and hustlers will be the focus at Sept. 10’s 2013 Leadership Music Summit in Nashville. Set to the theme “Digital Solutions Powered by the Entrepreneurial Spirit,” the single-day conference ($249) will highlight topics including “Bringing Content To Fruition,” “How To Make Marketing Engaging” and “Prioritizing Digital Needs & Solutions.” “The music industry is in a period of change,” says America’s Morning Show Dir./Operations Heather McBee, a Leadership Music alumni and this year’s co-chair. “The existing business

models have been challenged and a new generation of fans and techs will be creating the future business.” Attendees can expect an education on aspects of the industry where business crosses paths with technology. Panelists include DigSin Founder Jay Frank, Country Now Producer Stokes Nielson and StageIt Founder/CEO Evan Lowenstein as the keynote.

Lowenstein will address “The Artist As Entrepreneur,” demonstrating the summit’s offerings for both aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs, as well as independent musicians. “The audience is varied across the music industry,” says LM alum and Borman Entertainment’s Digital Business Development Head Cameo Carlson, who is also a co-chair. “Labels, managers, artists, agents, entrepreneurs and tech junkies will all find useful information in the topics discussed.” The subject matter will be specifically related to digital marketing in most cases, but the incubation of new technology platforms will allow many in attendance to begin building relationships with those ever-important content providers. “It’ll be a great networking opportunity to meet fellow tech and music enthusiasts,” says McBee. Carlson adds, “They’ll be able to connect around a substantive discussion.” A limited number of tickets to that night’s ACM Honors are also available for $25 with registration. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Country Media Strategist Phil Hunt discusses his most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums:1. Johnny Cash/Folsom Prison Blues: My dad’s favorite, usually accompanied by him clapping his hands while calling the hogs (we’re from Arkansas, you see). We played it at his funeral back in November and I bet he and Johnny were smiling in heaven when it played. We certainly were down here.

2. Bob Dylan/Forever Young: My wife Dianne and I put the lyrics in all three of our boys high school annuals, “May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true. May you always do for others and let others do for you.”3. The Beatles/Two Of Us: I worked for the late Rusty Walker for 14 years. One time we were on our way home in that dang RV of his (Paul RV) and ran out of fuel with only a mile to go. We both laughed the entire walk to the gas station. This song reminds me of those special days. I really miss him and so do many, many others!4. George Strait/I Saw God Today: If you’ve ever worked with me you’ve heard me talk about faith and family and its importance to our format. This song has both. God is always at work around us. Sometimes we get so caught up in the little stuff that we don’t see the miracle that is life! This song keeps me focused on what’s important.5. Don McLean/And I Love You So: Dianne and I have been married for 34 years. This is our song and I couldn’t say it any better: “But life began again, the day you took my hand.”• A highly regarded album you’ve never heard: Nirvana’s Nevermind. While I was with Clear Channel as an SVP, I programmed all the major formats and even some minor ones. Rock music changed after this album and I’d like to hear it in its entirety to better appreciate its place in music history.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ The Wind. I might have been too young to experience Beatlemania, but I was there for Garthmania and haven’t seen anything like it since.• One obscure song everyone should listen to right now: “Farther Along” by Josh Garrels. This means a lot to me, especially in light of the recent passing of Kidd Kraddick, Rusty and so many friends and family.

BB: But I hated One Direction when I was on CHR. So it’s really all the same. The artists are more talented and they’re nicer in country. Other than that, radio and our show are almost exactly the same. Entercom’s Fitz: It’s really still about what’s between the records. I target a 36-year-old female who I named Debbie Walker. She drives a Honda, has probably three kids and loves to listen to me in the morning. She loves to hear me talk about my kids. BB: Of course she does. She loves you. F: She does love me. And she stops at Walmart to pick up People magazine, checks her TMZ app and, if she’s lucky, has a chance to watch True Blood after she bathes her kids. We have a picture in our studio of this imaginary woman who we target every single day.

BB: We just go after ourselves. And what Fitz said is funny, because the Country audience watches normal TV shows like any other audience. When I was coming in, people were like, you’re dealing with a country lifestyle group. It’s all the same freaking

group. People just like certain types of music a little bit more. Look at me – nothing about me looks country. And we transitioned in 15 cities [so] if I had changed at all, I would be so fake. Listeners are smart ... you have to be transparent. F: [But] you can’t be too cool for the room. You do have to appeal to your audience. You can be God, family and country, and still be hip.

JH: You can be hip and authentic. You can’t put on some sort of country accent that you don’t have. BB: I’m not very God, so I don’t talk God. That’s not me, so I won’t do that. We have a girl that does that and she does it fine. I never wore cowboy boots in my life, and I talk about that, but I’m honest. People like honesty better than they do anything else. LH: Have you done anything on-air and gotten instant feedback that maybe you shouldn’t have gone there? BB: Everything I’ve ever done for the first five months. We got in a lot of trouble at the beginning because it was such a culture shock. But the negative feedback is great; people talking about us is good. We’re not offending anybody. We’ve never been a blue show, so the transition wasn’t hard. We don’t curse, we’ve never talked sex, even on Top 40. CBS Radio’s Jeff Kapugi: Because the format is so broad, its about balance and not alienating any portion of that audience. JH: When I crossed over, my whole life changed. I had a baby and feel like I can share more of it now on a Country format than I was able to before. My first day back from maternity leave I wanted to cry all day, and I talked about that. I love to cook and I can talk about that a little bit more. So, there are ways I can be actually more of myself now than I was before. LH: Country is a pretty tight-knit community. Have you found it to be welcoming? BB: The artists are just so nice. In CHR, they’re asses. They show up late or they don’t care or they don’t call. My favorite story is Brad Paisley had done the countdown and we had spent some time together. He invited me to his house for dinner. Outside I’m

OFF THE RECORD: DANIELLE BRADBERY Republic/Big Machine’s Danielle Bradbery puts an industry spin on the artist interview:I grew up listening to KKBQ and KILT/Houston. They both played the latest and greatest country.First time I heard myself on the radio, my sister Monica and I were driving down Fry Road in Cypress, TX when “The Heart Of Dixie” came on. We

looked at each other and both just started screaming! I’ll never forget the time, while practicing my song during The Voice, that my coach Blake Shelton, out of nowhere, stuck his finger up my nose. The most interesting road companions I’ve had so far are Erik Powell and Jeff Davis. Erik is like my bodyguard. He gives great advice and always makes it a point to stop at Chipotle and Starbucks for me. And Jeff is so sweet. He’s always funny, always in a great mood, and very reassuring of the work I’m doing. If I don’t have my earbuds when I travel, I go insane. Right now I’m listening to a lot of Blake Shelton, Arianna Grande, Thomas Rhett, Randy Houser, Tyler Farr, this song called “Power Trip” by J. Cole, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun” by Finatticz. The last album I bought was Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away.I can’t walk out of a truck stop without grabbing Sour Patch Kids. There’s no place like home, but I had to be stuck somewhere it would have to be Nashville, TN. It’s a beautiful city. I love the music, the restaurants and the shops. It just has such an incredible vibe! When there’s downtime I watch my friends Vine videos on my newsfeed. The most redneck thing I’ve done recently was four-wheeling out in the country at my cousin’s house in Texas.

cool, but inside I was like, holy shit this is the craziest thing ever. We went out to his backyard and he told me, “They’re really going to hate you for a while here. This town is full of old-guard – a lot of the musicians are old-guard. You’re just so different, but they’re going to love you. They hated me for so long because I was so different and everyone looked at me like I’m such a weirdo, but once they see the authenticity of you, then they’re going to love you.” That dude did not have to have me to dinner, he did not have to have a conversation with me in his backyard, he did not have to open up like that, and no one would ever do that in pop music.

Especially no one that is at the top like that. JH: The listeners have been really welcoming, too. I’ve had more than one say that I followed them to Country, so I thought that was kinda cool. F: You know what’s amazing is, and I’m not going to mention any names,

but I can’t tell you how many Top 40 people at this convention have told me they’re thinking about going Country. BB: I called Fitz when I was thinking about going Country. I was like, dude, I’m liberal. F: You hate God. BB: Jesus is not my homeboy. What do I do? He said it’s the same thing. You have to do it. And he was right. JK: Nashville also roots for Nashville, whether it’s radio or the record companies, they’re all rooting for each other to be successful. After programming in Pop for 20 years, it’s been extremely refreshing. I’d never go back. JH: Carrie Underwood called to welcome me to Country ... and called early. I was like used to sitting around at the Top 40 station for two hours waiting for an artist to call for an interview. She was early. You were attacked last week. If you work in, listen to, receive airplay on or aspire to receive airplay on Country radio, or if you derive a measure of your livelihood from any of the people categorized above, Peter Cooper and The Tennessean have declared that you and your efforts lack merit. If you’re at all associated with country music and Country radio, it’s important to understand just how fully a prominent Nashville media outlet has belittled your entire industry and community. In his Tuesday “On Music” column (8/6), Cooper responded to Tom Petty’s recent criticism of country with a defense of the genre that was to large degree thinly veiled

cover for his own attack on Country radio. What Cooper and so

many others who love to complain fail to grasp is just how broad and intellectually empty that assault really is, and the extent to which it reveals a troubling low regard for others. First, some background. Last Monday, RollingStone.com posted an interview with Petty in which he said, “Most of [country] reminds me of rock in the middle ‘80s where it become incredibly generic.” This was after an onstage proclamation about the genre being “bad rock with fiddles.” Enter Cooper, who presumes to know how Petty listens to music and, naturally, what he really means: “He’s trying to say that much of what he hears on the country radio isn’t up to snuff with some of the geniuses who used to be on country radio. But his broad brush is making a mess of things.” Cooper then breaks out his own wide-bristle: “I’m just saying that defining country music by whatever’s playing on the radio at the moment is both maddening and ridiculous.” He goes on to prove he missed the elementary school lesson about not building things up by tearing others down as he cites some of his favorites on the fringes of the mainstream. “Most of the above country musicians aren’t on terrestrial, FM contemporary country radio,” he writes. “Does that make country music any the lesser? No, it just makes country radio (even) less enjoyable (if that’s possible).” And he continues with this colossal mistake: “Country music doesn’t need country radio anymore. We country fans have $10 to spend at the door, and we have YouTube and iTunes and Ernest Tubb Record Shops and the sense to stop complaining about what we don’t have any reason to endure.” The primary and fatal flaw in much of music criticism regards the vocabulary of value. Cooper, Petty and so many others confuse not liking something with it being bad, unable to be enjoyed or otherwise lacking merit. If 70 million people are deliberately listening to, buying

albums of and tickets for – and seem generally pleased with – the mainstream music played on Country radio, doesn’t that have value? And not just financially? To argue otherwise is to say those fans have no taste and to invalidate their clearly expressed opinions. Evidently, Cooper has no problem condescending to millions of his fellow Americans and, by extension, mainstream country artists, labels, producers, songwriters, musicians and countless others who work tirelessly to reach those radio listeners. The assertion that country music doesn’t need Country radio is equally illogical and ignorant. First, it fails to recognize the intimate connection between radio and country music that traces from the origins of the Grand Ole Opry all the way up to the demonstrably strong relationship that endures today. Country music is Country radio. Country radio is country music. They developed together and are as inseparable as conjoined twins with one heart. Second, it dismisses the vast economic impact Country radio makes on country music and Nashville. A songwriter himself, Cooper should understand the devastation that would be wrought on the music community if licensing revenue from Country radio suddenly stopped flowing. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. How many singles and albums would sell without airplay? How many seats would stand empty without an air personality touting the upcoming concert? Since Cooper took it upon himself to explain Petty’s argument, we’ll do the same for Cooper. Perhaps he should have written, “Tom Petty and others who don’t like mainstream country music can find artists and music more to their liking on the fringes of the genre. Here are some suggestions...” Or maybe even, “The quality of music, country or otherwise, is in the eye of the beholder. The widespread and growing popularity of mainstream country music is a testament to how millions of Americans feel about the genre, even if Tom Petty doesn’t quite get it.” Unfortunately, it’s probably too much to expect Cooper and The Tennessean to actually have country music’s – and Nashville’s – back. Instead, they took the opportunity to insult literally everyone who loves, makes and promotes mainstream country music. In short, Peter Cooper is flat-out wrong about Country radio’s importance to country music, guilty of the exact broad-brush generalizations he condemns and unconscionably condescending to millions of people who have directly and indirectly supported his city, his employer and his career. Further, his editors’ willingness to publish such flawed logic and indiscriminate negativity about an immeasurably vital part of Nashville’s commerce and culture – not to mention a vital part of American culture – is beyond comprehension.

Country radio was down, with overall shares decreasing 3.89% compared to June. Of the 77 subscribing stations which post a 1.0 share or higher, 37 increased, 34 decreased and three were flat compared to last month. The following stations posted best-ever PPM shares: WKLB/Boston, WUSN/Chicago, WYGY/Cincinnati, WYCD/Detroit, KMNB/

Minneapolis, WDSY/Pittsburgh and KUPL/Portland. The cume leader remains WUSN/Chicago, whose audience increased by 20,400 to 1,427,100, a second consecutive cume record. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station best in that statistic.

Here are Spring 2013 (3/28-6/19) Arbitron diary ratings results from July 22-26, listed alphabetically by market. Not all stations are subscribers and that’s why you won’t see rankings listed. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station best in that statistic.
