Swirl has completed their Series C of investing with significant investment from Twitter Ventures. This is big news for proximity marketing. If Twitter integrates the SDK into their app, brands could advertise with beacons directly from the Twitter app. Other popular apps could try the same strategy.Beacon technology has huge potential for brands but it needs more availability. With its purportedly almost 300 million active users, Twitter could provide just that.

Pre-orders were sold out almost immediately for the most ambitious Smart Watch to date.Like the newest iPhones, the watch is a bluetooth beacon itself. It works with Bluetooth 4.0. It currently can be used for flight check-ins, Apple Pay, Apple TV and of course Bluetooth music listening. Marsh Supermarkets has beacons to be used with the Apple Watch to send push notifications to shoppers. Starwood Hotels allows wearers keyless hotel room access. In the first few days of the Apple Watch being shipped thousands of apps were developed. A Chinese jewelry retailer named Chow Tai Fook launched a beacon program at 237 stores. They generated quite a bit of income with beacon deals that were sent to customers via WeChat app. This was perhaps a more successful beacon endeavor because many visitors already used this app and did not have to download a Chow Tai Fook app. We hope this leads to more beacon uses not only in the jewelery space, but also uses with apps that users already have downloaded.More info found here.Photo found here.

The IHL Group conducted a study of more than 100 retailers at small medium and large firms. Currently, it was just 10 percent of the larger stores surveyed that had tested beacons. However, by the end of the year many more will launch - 37% of large retailers answered they would. Even more have plans for 2016. Many see the potential in proximity marketing. With so many positive test results, they realize it is time to test them out for themselves. In fact, by 2020 all retailers will be using them according to an article in Forbes also written this month. Join the beacon party!More details on this can be found on mediapost.

It is not quite as big as the Mobile World Congress last month in Barcelona, but it is nevertheless a continuation of the exciting times ahead for proximity tech in the mobile capital of the world. From sensors on recycling bins, to sensors on lights and NFC and QR codes all around the city, Barcelona was named the SmartCity of 2015. This conference reached broader than Barcelona´s IOT innovation and covered news in location-based marketing, 2.0 Retail, Internet of Things, wearables and of course iBeacons. Movintracks was proud to have our own Emilio Iorlari as a keynote.
