Major events like the Grammy Awards (which aired Jan. 26) benefit radio for obvious reasons: Even if stations do nothing but promote the awards with music beforehand—and celebrate the winners the same way after—they’ve still attached them-selves to the brand in the listener’s mind.
When music isn’t the focus of events of that mag-nitude, as is the case with the upcoming Super Bowl (Feb. 2), tie-ins are trickier. That’s the challenge facing top 40 this week each year in the two markets where the com-peting teams are based, as well as in the market where the game’s being played.
With Super Bowl XLVIII days away, here’s how sta-tions in Seattle, Denver and New York have tackled the promotion blitz without fum-bling, both in leading up to the big game and throughout football season.
SEATTLE: MAKING TOP 40 = 12“We’re truly the intersection of party meets 12th-man ex-citement,” says Eric Powers, PD of Clear Channel main-stream top 40 KBKS (106.1 KISS FM) Seattle, referring to
how Seahawks fans express their devotion to the team. “We changed the name of the station to 106.1 Hawk FM and have fans on the air every hour. The day after we beat the 49ers, Jackie and Bender from the morning show gave away NFC Championship gear and had the Sea Gals cheerleaders in the
studio.” To reinforce the bitter rivalry between both teams, KBKS’ website features video of Niners fans watching the end of that game.
Throughout the season, KBKS and co-owned rhythmic KUBE, which Powers also programs, were part of “Blue Friday Takeovers” to fire up Seahawks fans on air and online. More recently, players Walter Thurmond and the Skittles-loving Marshawn Lynch took over KUBE’s “Eric & Dirty Harry”

afternoon show, which Powers co-hosts. “We talked to Marshawn about his pre-game warm-up: He’s into many songs on KUBE’s playlist including Mista Fab, Lil Boosie and basically any Bay Area hip-hop.”
Lynch’s favorite jams aren’t the only way stations have tied music to football. Earlier this season, KBKS hosted a game-viewing party at Seattle’s Experi-ence Music Project museum that included a halftime performance by Gavin DeGraw. For Sunday’s game, KBKS and KUBE listeners can win their way into the 12th Man VIP Party, where both stations will broadcast live and local artists will perform the Seahawk anthems that have played at either station, such as TNT’s “Blue & Green” recorded for KUBE, based on Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow.”
On KQMV (Movin 92.5), Hubbard’s mainstream top 40 in the Emerald City, Young Jeffrey of “Brooke & Jubal in the Morning” jumped on the parody bandwagon with a tribute to the Seahawks’ Richard Sherman—who became a household name after his interview following the cham-pionship game—by turning Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” into “Sher-manizer.” KQMV is also offering more than $1,000 in prizes in its 12th Fan Selfie Bowl; Brooke & Jubal will judge the best photos posted on the station’s website.
Across town at Sinclair’s adult top 40 KPLZ (Star 101.5), Kent Phillips—PD, 26-year morning co-host and Seahawks season ticket holder—auctioned off
his own pair of Super Bowl tickets on-air on Jan. 27 to benefit Se-attle Children’s Hos-p i t a l , w h e re t e a m quarterback Russell Wilson volunteers. “Our kids both went to Children’s when they were young, and this was a chance to pay it forward and help another child,” Phillips says.
Even EDM-lean-ing KNHC (C89.5) has caught the fever,
PD Jon McDaniel says. “We’ve wished [the team] well throughout the season on social media— even reposted a photo of Tiësto wearing Se-ahawks gear that was very popular—but didn’t get on the air about it until it hit critical mass. We’ll continue as the game gets closer and the frenzy gets louder.”
DENVER: THE ‘OMAHA’ STAKESWhile the Broncos and “Omaha”-shouting Peyton Manning are assured their place in Sunday’s game, it wasn’t clear at press time whether Manning had won Clear Channel rhythmic KPTT (95.7 the Party) Denver’s “quarter-bracket” voting for hottest quarterback on the station’s website.
Quarterbracket is just part of the makeover the station’s online and on-air presence has undergone leading up to the Super Bowl. “We’ve changed the color scheme of our logo and cover photos on all our social platforms and websites to orange and blue,” PD Joe Bevilacqua says. “We’re also using the slogan ‘Time to ride’ on-air and online.”
KPTT has given female listeners who aren’t necessarily fans more to do than just rate the quarterbacks. “We set a new record for Web hits when eve-ning host Deuce went to practice [and] snuck shots of Eric Decker stretch-ing, which became a phenomenon,” Bevilacqua says. Midday personality and Denver fashion tastemaker Issa also works with the team’s cheerleaders. “We host charity events they participate in all year. When they recruit for the new squad, the Party engages the female audience through Twitter to encourage participation as well.”
Over at Entercom adult top 40 KALC (Alice 105.9), morning hosts BJ & Jamie have answered the challenge thrown down by Seattle radio’s Seahawks songs with a parody of Pitbull’s “Don’t Stop the Party” by the show’s Producer Sean.

Halfway through an hour, stations consulted by the legendary Bill Drake would transition between songs with Bill announcing, “Ladies and gentle-
men, the beat goes on.” As the clock runs out on our final Top 40 Update, while we feel we’re not even at our halfway point after 222 issues, we know for top 40, the beat abso-lutely will go on.
Rather than use this column to review our past, I’d like to focus on radio’s future: not just where the medium’s headed, but those who will some day call the shots. I’ve asked my students at Seton Hall Uni-
versity—many of whom major in broadcasting and work at campus station WSOU South Orange, N.J.—to share their beliefs when it comes to radio. I hope you find them as encouraging as I do.• Live matters: “The whole point of radio is having that personal element,”
WSOU station manager Erin O’Grady says. “Without a host it’s like listening to my iPod, which I get bored of quickly.” Radio major Tim Veiga agrees. “I like interacting with an air personality who knows what they’re talking about and are just as passionate as I am about music. Taking that away takes away what I love about radio.”
• Take new music back: With the exception of genre-owning stations like WQHT (Hot 97) New York for hip-hop and WSOU for harder-edged rock, students look elsewhere for what’s just come out. “I usually hear about new music through Twitter or on YouTube,” broadcast major and WSOU producer Kayla D’Amour says. Veiga finds new music “through Spotify and from following artists I like on Facebook.”
• Diversity is key: “[While] I like the current music stations play, I wish they’d stop playing it so repeatedly,” WSOU air personality Ryan Flan-nery says. “Diversity makes radio more interesting,” Veiga adds. “I worry that overplaying songs turns listeners away [and that] it keeps there from being a musical outlet for all genres. There is money to be made for radio, as people from my generation aren’t necessarily going out of their way to purchase SiriusXM.”
As for Update, it’s been a fun 222. Special thanks to . . .• David Diehl, who designed this newsletter with precision and polish. • Christa Titus, who translated everything I wrote into something read-
able each week. • Allyson Levy, the best advertisement for Top 40 Update there could ever be. • Gary Trust and Keith Caulfield: Kings of the charts, bosses of the bul-
lets, guardians of the gainers.• Sean “Ross on Radio” Ross: You can’t stump him, don’t even try.• Mike Stern, our first editor who raised the bar so high I forgot how to limbo.• Silvio Pietroluongo, for whom I still work because I’ve never once mis-
spelled his name. His first name, I mean.• Everyone at the stations, labels and beyond who took my calls, answered
my emails and shared my passion for telling a good story.• All of you for reading, and some of you for writing us, too.
Until we meet again, this is your CHRonicler reminding you, ladies and gentlemen—the beat goes on.
NEW YORK STATIONS: HOSTS WITH THE MOSTOn a good day, East Rutherford, N.J.’s MetLife Stadium, home to Super Bowl XLVIII, is a 23-minute ride from downtown Manhattan, where most New York top 40 stations reside. It’s no surprise then that stations closest to the action have put together plenty of pre-game and game-day activities and promos.
During the regular season, CBS Radio mainstream top 40 WNOW (92.3 NOW) morning co-host Lulu visited a local high school to prove she could kick a field goal better than the then-0-and-6 New York Giants. She has the football weekend covered with “Touchdown at Bronx Terminal Market,” featuring former Giants running back and Super Bowl XXV MVP Ottis Anderson, and “Big Game Bowling” with WNOW resident mixer DJ David S.
Clear Channel’s WHTZ (Z100) and WKTU gave away a 50-inch TV at a free-admission Big Game Party with Flo Rida performing. “We’re doing winners-only super-intimate concerts with Bastille and American Authors,” CBS adult top 40 WWFS (Fresh 102.7) PD Jim Ryan says. Shows starring Prince Royce and Ziggy Marley are part of rhythmic WQHT’s (Hot 97) “Get Hyped for Halftime” series, while such artists as Nelly and 2 Chainz are part of the 13th annual Celebrity Flag Football Challenge.
And how do the PDs think the big game will shake out? Powers predicts, “[While] the Broncos are favored by one-and-a-half, I feel it’ll be 27-24 Se-ahawks.” Bevilacqua: “24-23 Denver. Steven Hauschka misses a 48-yard field goal wide right as time expires.” McDaniel calls it 28-17, Seahawks. “Se-attle sports needs this. It’s been a while since we had a championship.”

In a city that they love: After its performance of “Pompeii” on “Saturday Night Live” (which aired Jan. 25), Bastille stopped by Capitol Records’ New York office. From left: Bastille’s Dan Smith and Chris “Woody” Wood, Capitol Northeast regional promotion director Pam Kaye, Bastille’s William Farquarson and Kyle Simmons, and Capitol VP pop promotion Joe Rainey.
Come on in, the water’s freezing: Kyle of WNOU (Radio Now 100.9) Indianapolis’ “The Kyle and Rachel Morning Show” bundled up in the 10-degree weather, but Butler University students stripped down for the inaugural Indianapolis Polar Plunge on Jan. 25 to benefit Special Olympics Indiana. The event raised $21,000.

little. But that’s fine: Getting the interview is the best reward. I’ve been able to get a lot of them before most people. I was second after Ellen DeGeneres to interview the Wanted when they toured the States.
Does your age throw most celebrities for a loop? Sometimes when I start, I can tell the celebrity is doing it as a favor. They come across like, “Oh, I will do an interview with this little girl, isn’t this cute?” I can tell they are treating me like it is not a real interview. Then I start asking tough questions and I can see them immediately change their body language. It’s like there’s a cartoon bubble above their head that says, “OMG, this is a real interview. I’d better get my game face on.”
What’s an interview with you like? I think bringing out the human element of each guest is important, and I like to make sure to ask questions my audience would like to hear. I do a lot of research, which often surprises guests, but this helps me because they have to think on their feet and may give me an answer no one has ever heard before. For example, when I asked A Great Big World about the obstacles they had overcome, band member Chad Vaccarino talked about being gay.
Where would you like to take your talents? I’d like to host a syndicated daily radio show focused on new music or comedy and to work behind the scenes at “American Idol” or “The Voice” to bring contestants to life on radio. I could see both shows moving to television and featuring backstage interviews, because it really humanizes the celebrities when you talk to them before or after they go onstage. Most people don’t get to see that side of the artists: There is a lot of adrenalin there.
What are your immediate goals for “Kidz Place”? I am looking for greater distri-bution for the show, which I’d like to keep going even after I am too old to host it myself. I think “Kidz Place” can go on for as long as there are tweens and teens. —Rich Appel
Q U E ST I O N S
AnsweredPavlina Osta
Host, “Pavlina’s Kidz Place” (@pavlinamusic)
Pavlina Osta began her weekly interview show at age 11 on WAPN Holly Hill, Fla. Four years later, “Pavlina’s Kidz Place” is heard on a network of stations, and has featured 300-plus celebrity guests, from Ed Sheeran and fun. to Shaquille O’Neal and Dr. Oz. Now, the 16-year-old Osta—who’s also junior editor for I Am Entertainment magazine and founder of TTYL, TxT Ya Later, to raise teen awareness of texting while driving—is making her interview segments available for top 40 and other formats through Frazier Public Relations.
What got you started in radio at such a young age? I was a street performer in the Daytona Beach area, playing my steel drums in front of stores. I probably did about 100 gigs before I was 13. Different media would interview me; one time someone from a radio station said I had a great voice and should have my own show. So that’s what I did.
Were you always fascinated with radio, or did that come naturally once “Kidz Place” began? At 11, I didn’t know much about radio except for listening to it on the way to school. No one in my family was in radio or knew anyone in the business, but I was attracted to the idea of creating a show kids my age would be interested in hearing. I taught myself how to put the show together, from scheduling, researching, recording and doing the actual interview, to putting the show down and editing it for air.
Has being the youngest interviewer on the red carpet been a challenge or an advantage? Being young and persistent has its ad-vantages. Usually younger artists want to talk with me because I’m part of their audience, and their fans are part of my audience. At the same time, other red carpet journalists and TV hosts are out there to get their stories and interviews, so I’ve gotten a few bruises and been kicked around a

Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” (featur-ing Juicy J) races into the Billboard Hot 100’s winner’s circle, rising 2-1. The song, which contains trap dance elements, is a slight departure from Perry’s standard pure-pop fare.
“This No. 1 is the most unexpected one I’ve ever had,” Perry says. “‘Dark Horse’ has been a dark horse of a song since August, when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before [parent album] ‘PRISM’ even came out. I’m so thrilled and grateful to have these moments.”
“Dark Horse” marks Perry’s ninth Hot 100 No. 1, lifting her into a five-way tie for 10th place among acts with the most toppers in the chart’s 55-year history. The Beatles lead with 20 No. 1s, followed by Mariah Carey (18), Michael Jackson, Rihanna (13 each), Madonna, the Supremes (12 each), Whitney Houston (11), Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder (10 each). Perry equals the No. 1 sums of the Bee Gees, Elton John, Paul McCartney (apart from the Beatles) and Usher.
Perry has tallied eight of her nine Hot 100 No. 1s in the ’10s, tying Ri-hanna for the highest total this de-cade. Bruno Mars ranks second in the ’10s with five leaders, followed by Adele, Eminem and Ke$ha (three each). As of this week, Perry becomes the only artist to have risen to No. 1 in each year of the current decade.
As for how “Horse” wins the Hot 100’s first-place ribbon, it leads all but one of the Hot 100’s main component charts. It tops Digital Songs (294,000 downloads sold, up 12%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and the sub-scription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (2.5 million U.S. streams, up 28%, according to Nielsen BDS) for a third week each, and takes over atop Streaming Songs, where it pushes 3-1 (5.6 million streams, up 8%). It’s Perry’s second No. 1 on Streaming Songs, following “Roar.”
The song’s streaming momen-tum could increase once its video is released; Perry is currently filming it. Notably, with no official clip so far, Vevo on YouTube is the source of most of the cut’s streaming activ-ity, accounting for 39% of its streams. Spotify is a close second among data sources with 37%.
On Radio Songs, “Dark Horse” surges 9-4 with 101 million all- format audience impressions, up 21%.
Perry performed “Dark Horse” at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night (Jan. 26), helping fuel its rise on this week’s charts. The latest sales tracking week ended the same night, so while a bevy of Grammy-related songs and albums show gains this week, we’ll see the full impact of the
night on next week’s charts once a full week of sales have registered.
‘DIRTY’ ‘TALK’: Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” (featuring 2 Chainz) vaults 15-6 on the Hot 100 as the chart’s top Streaming Gainer. It rock-ets into the Streaming Songs top 10 (17-8; 3.9 million, up 53%) and blasts 6-2 on Digital Songs with 194,000 downloads sold (up 31%). In its sec-ond week on Radio Songs, it speeds 48-26 (40 million, up 45%).
“Dirty” has been boosted by the buzz of its “Celebrities Talkin’ Dirty” trailer video, in which artists includ-ing Robin Thicke, Flo Rida and Ari-ana Grande endorse it, with One-Direction also having posted a clip of the group dancing to it.
The song becomes Derulo’s fourth Hot 100 top 10 and first since his first three entries reached the region in 2009-10: “Whatcha Say” (one week at No. 1), “In My Head” (No. 5) and “Ridin’ Solo” (No. 9). In between “Solo” and “Dirty,” Derulo still man-aged to notch four top 40 hits.

For week ending Jan. 26, 2014. Figures are rounded. Compiled from a national sample of retail store and rack sales reports col-lected by Nielsen SoundScan.
Nielsen SoundScan counts as current only sales within the first 18 months of an album’s re-lease (12 months for Classical and Jazz albums). Titles that stay in the top half of the Billboard 200, however, remain as current. Titles older than 18 months are catalog. Deep catalog is a subset of catalog for titles out more than 36 months.
