Toledo, 55 km from Madrid, on a hill in a meander of the river Tagus, is now the capital of

the Autonomous Community of La Mancha.

For centuries, Christians, Jews, and Muslims flourished in a "city of three cultures"

peacefully and built a dazzling array of churches, convents, palaces, fortresses, synagogues,

and mosques. Cobbled streets, steep, narrow, winding. Wander the atmospheric narrow

lanes, relax in quiet courtyards, and visit artisan shops tucked away in little alleys. Toledo is

known for its traditional crafts, including damascene metalwork, antique-inspired swords,

and handmade marzipan (sweet almond candies.

most famous masterpiece The Burial of

the Count of Orgaz (El entierro del

conde de Orgaz) which is accessed by a

separate entrance on Plaza del Conde.

When the count was buried in 1322,

Saints Augustine and Stephen

supposedly descended from heaven to

attend the funeral. El Greco’s work

depicts the event, complete with miracle

guests including himself, his son and

Cervantes.

The main facade has three portals, known as, respectively, Portal of Forgiveness (Puerta del

Perdón) in the centre, Portal of the Last Judgment (Puerta del Juicio Final) to the right and

Portal of Hell (Puerta del Infierno) to the left.

The Portal of Forgiveness belongs to the 15th century. It is so called because indulgences were

granted to penitents who entered through it. These days it is always closed and is used only on

special occasions and upon the investiture of new archbishops of the primate cathedral.

正立面有三個大門，寬恕之門在中間，最後審判之門在右邊，而地獄之門在左邊。

This lively square is flanked by cafes that are pricey but undeniably good for people-watching.

From 1465 until the 1960s Zocodover was the scene of the city's Tuesday market and successor

to the Arab souq ad-dawab (livestock market), hence the name. It was also here that toledanos

for centuries enjoyed their bullfights or, morbidly, gathered to witness public burnings at the

stake carried out by the Inquisition.
