Design  1  Toile  style  design  to  be  used  for  a  

fabric  and  wallpaper  design.  

Eltham  Palace  Building  I  started  to  develop  this  idea  by  using  my  rough  sketches  and  photos  from  Eltham  as  a  reference  to  create  a  set  of  more  stylized  drawings  using  watercolour  pencils.  I  made  them  all  blue  both  as  a  result  of  my  colour  research  and  as  this  is  the  tradi?onal  and  most  common  colour  for  toile  prints,  the  colour  however  wasn’t  quite  the  right  shade  but  as  I  plan  to  put  the  design  together  digitally  the  colour  can  bra  manipulated  later  in  Photoshop.

Eltham  Palace  Gardens  

Figures  Inspired  by  the  Great  Gatsby  Using  the  same  style  as  the  previous  drawings  I  then  developed  the  figures  that  I  had  sketched  based  on  scenes  from  the  party  in  The  Great  Gatsby,  I  tried  to  style  them  with  a  hint  of  the  simplicity  that  art  deco  fashion  illustra?ons  were  drawn  in,  in  reference  to  my  research  into  art  deco  fashions  and  illustra?on,  however  it  was  also  important  that  the  designs  fit  into  the  toile  style  and  matched  with  my  previous  drawings  of  Eltham  which  would  not  have  suited  this  style.  The  other  thing  that  I  tried  to  do  with  the  couple  is  to  try  and  give  them  some  resemblance  to  Virginia  and  Stephen  Coulthard  which  I  think  has  worked  to  certain  extent  on  the  female  figure  at  least.  

Figures  and  Feathers  The  figures  are  of  two  women  dancing,  again  inspired  by  The  Great  Gatsby  where  there  is  a  shot  of  two  women  in  matching  dresses  dancing  together,  I  thought  this  would  be  an  interes?ng  thing  to  hide  within  the  design,  The  Coulthard’s  were  know  for  causing  a  liKle  controversy  so  it  would  be  interes?ng  to  hide  something  a  liKle  controversial  within  the  design  in  a  similar  but  more  subtle  way  to  the  way  that  Timorous  Beas?es  do  in  their  toile  designs.  I  decided  to  sketch  up  some  feathers  to  match  the  designs  as  well  in  order  to  help  ?e  the  design  in  beKer  with  the  feather  inspired  concept.  

Stylising  Expreriments    Having  done  my  drawings  in  watercolour  I  then  scanned  them  into  photoshop  and  put  them  through  various  filters  in  order  to  establish  the  best  way  of  presen?ng  them,  in  the  end  I  simply  put  them  through  the  stamp  filter  to  neaten  them  up  a  liKle  and  used  the  hue  and  satura?on  tool  to  change  the  colour.  

Layout  Experiments    In  order  to  figure  out  the  layout  of  the  design  I  put  the  images  into  photoshop    changing  their  scale  and  posi?on.  Having  recently  done  the  tutorials  with  Kevin  Dean  I  started  off  trying  a  half  drop  paKern  repeat  trying  to  avoid  a  blocky  layout,  but  as  the  design  was  s?ll  quite  simple  the  repeat  was  s?ll  quite  obvious.  

Layout  experiments    In  the  end  I  decided  that  this  was  the  best  layout  to  bring  forward,  I  liked  having  the  image  of  the  gardens  as  the  predominent  image  as  I  think  it  is  the  strongest  and  the  use  of  the  figures  and  the  feathers  makes  the  design  flow  nicely  however  there  is  s?ll  quite  a  lot  of  nega?ve  space  and  the  paKern  repeat  is  s?ll  quite  blocky  so  the  layout  s?ll  needs  further  work.  

Colour  experiments    Although  my  colour  research  points  me  towards  working  with  a  blue  colour  paleKe  I  started  to  experiment  with  other  colours  just  incase  they  might  work  beKer  with  the  design.  I  started  by  crea?ng  an  almost  gray  scale  color  paleKe  which  works  fairly  well  but  I  think  comes  across  a  liKle  too  dark  and  takes  away  from  the  party  feel  that  the  design  is  meant  to  portray.  

green  and  then  chose  a  green  colour  based  on  the  Pantone  research  as  this  colour  is  set  to  be  on  trend  next  season  and  works  quite  well  with  toile  designs  but  again  it  has  a  quite  dark  tone  to  it    

maroon  This  one  has  a  bit  of  a  maroon  hint  to  it,  I  wanted  it  to  almost  have  a  sepia  quality  to  give  a  vintage  effect  but  it  has’t  really  worked  and  this  colour  doesn't’t  really  suit  the  design.  

Colour  Filter    In  the  end  I  decided  that  the  blue  was  in  fact  the  best  colour  for  the  design  but  wanted  it  to  be  darker  then  it  was  in  my  original  images  so  I  made  a  blue  colour  dodge  layer  over  the  greyscale  image  which  works  a  liKle  beKer  but  I  feel  s?ll  needs  lightening  up  a  liKle.    

Pa>ern  repeat  I  put  the  design  into  a  larger  repeat  to  get  a  beKer  idea  of  how  it  was  working  so  far,  the  darker  colour  does  work  beKer  on  this  scale  but  I  think  that  the  grey  background  is  s?ll  quite  depressing  and  is  only  neccicary  because  of  the  amount  of  nega?ve  space  in  the  image  so  the  layout  perhaps  needs  to  be  reconsidered,  it  is  quite  simple  at  the  moment  so  maybe  redesigning  it  in  a  more  complex  with  more  considera?on  towards  the  nega?ve  space  would  help.  

Addressing  the  nega@ve  space  My  first  solu?on  to  the  issue  of  the  nega?ve  space  awes  to  use  photoshop  to  fill  in  some  of  the  space  using  the  same  style  as  the  photos  were  drawn  in,  this  does  help  to  blend  the  images  together  beKer  and  creates  a  beKer  paKern  repeat  but  it  is  a  bit  messy  and  doesn't’t  solve  the  problem  of  the  simplicity  of  the  repeat.  

Addi@onal  Images  I  then  decided  that  the  paKern  needed  to  built  upon  with  a  more  complex  design  so  I  went  back  the  The  Great  Gatsby  and  created  some  more  images,  I  decided  that  the  image  didn't’t  quite  have  enough  of  the  twen?es  party  feel  so  I  went  with  some  images  which  added  a  more  upbeat  feel  to  the  design.

Layout  experiments    I  went  back  to  the  stage  of  finding  the  best  layout  for  the  repeat  playing  with  different  scales,  arrangements  and  repeats.  

Pen  Drawings  At  this  stage  my  feather  drawing  had  been  drawn  in  pen  so  I  decided  to  create  the  paKern  in  a  similar  style  to  see  if  I  could  make  them  more  cohesive,  the  design  as  originally  drawn  up  on  a  fairly  small  scale  which  made  it  hard  to  get  the  detail  of  the  smoking  figure  right,  so  I  had  to  re  draw  it  on  a  larger  scale  and  then  replace  it  using  photoshop.  The  design  works  quite  well  but  is  s?ll  quite  simple.  

Digital  manipula@on    Here  I  layered  the  pen  drawing  on  top  of  the  water  colour  drawing  allowing  a  small  amount  of  the  watercolour  detail  to  come  through  in  order  to  give  the  pen  drawing  beKer  effect,  I  then  filtered  the  image  to  fit  the  grey  and  blue  colour  scheme  which  is  quite  effec?ve  but  s?ll  quite  dark.  

Screen  prin@ng  The  main  problem  with  the  image  at  this  point  is  the  colour,  I  thought  that  it  needed  a  liKle  more  dimension  so  having  recently  done  a  screen  prin?ng  induc?on  I  recreated  my  design,  drawing  up  two  layers,  one  colour,  one  with  the  blocks  of  he  shapes  and  one  with  the  outlines  and  used  to  to  create  a  much  more  interes?ng  and  effec?ve  design.  

Ini@al  experiments    On  my  first  aKempt  I  mixed  the  wrong  colour  and  ended  up  with  purple  inks  but  they  actually  work  quite  well  with  the  deign,  I  then  however  started  experimen?ng  with  blues,  and  even  adding  metallic  inks,  so  the  lighter  blue  has  a  metallic  effect  to  it  which  works  really  well.  

Colour  experiments    Here  I  am  tes?ng  the  colour  combina?on  using  the  outline  both  on  its  own  and  with  silver,  however  it  looks  much  beKer  next  to  the  lighter  blue.  

Overlaying  Metallic  Pen  Metallic  were  something  that  I  wanted  to  work  with  this  in  this  project  as  it  gives  off  the  sense  of  luxury  associated  with  the  palace,  I  had  already  mixed  metallic  ink  with  the  lighter  blue  but  I  decided  to  see  if  the  image  would  work  beKer  if  it  hen  drew  into  it  using  a  silver  pen,  the  effect  does  work  but  the  difference  between  the  mediums  is  quite  clear  and  I  think  the  original  two  layer  print  works  beKer.  

Textured  surfaces  I  wanted  to  see  if  I  could  make  the  design  more  interes?ng  by  using  a  textured  surface,  so  I  treed  to  screen  print  directly  onto  some  different  plain  textured  wallpapers,  unfortunately  the  ink  does’t  transfer  onto  the  whole  surface  so  it  doesn't’t  work  which  means  the  design  had  so  be  printed  onto  a  flat  paper.  

Background  effects    I  wanted  to  experiment  with  giving  the  background  a  pearlescent  finish,  however  I  could’t  source  any  plain  pearlescent  wallpaper  to  print  onto  so  I  decided  to  try  prin?ng  a  a  pearlescent  background  onto  the  the  paper  using  a  blank  screen,  unfortunately  it  wasn’t  possible  to  get  an  even  finish,  too  much  ink  came  through  the  screen  leading  to  an  uneven  finish  which  meant  that  it  would  be  beKer  to  just  print  onto  the  plain  maK  paper.  

Digital  manipula@on  I  did  experiment  with  trying  to  create  the  paKern  repeat  with  the  screen  but  as  there  were  several  layers  it  was  quite  difficult  to  line  up  the  screens  accurately  and  it  became  quite  messy  so  I  decided  to  scan  in  the  design  so  that  I  could  print  it  out  digitally,  this  would  also  give  a  cleaner  effect  although  unfortunately  means  that  metallic  ink  cant  be  used,  however  it  did  allow  me  to  manipulate  the  design  a  bit,  a  made  the  faces  of  the  couples  white  and  added  a  liKle  more  detail  to  the  image  of  the  building  itself  and  the  willow  tree  in  the  garden  image.  I  manipulated  the  colour  a  liKle  as  I  felt  it  went  with  the  chosen  colour  scheme  much  beKer.  

Final  design  I  then  used  this  design  to  create  the  final  layout  which  is  an  offset  paKern  repeat,  I  used  the  same  repeat  for  the  fabric  and  the  wallpaper  however  I  decided  that  they  would  work  beKer  on  different  scales  so  the  scale  of  the  design  on  the  wallpapers  is  bigger  then  the  scale  of  the  fabric.  The  wallpaper  was  designed  at  a  width  of  52cm  and  the  image  had  to  be  sized  and  posi?oned  so  that  it  was  possible  to  match  two  strips  of  wallpaper  which  I  managed  to  do  successfully.
