Needles: US #7 (4.5 mm) 47-inch (120-cm) circular needle – or whatever kind you use to knit in the round AND in whatever size YOU require to obtain correct gauge. Gauge matters, needle size doesn't.

Toe:For both sizes, using Judy's Magic Cast-On, CO 16 sts, 8 on each needle.Prepare to knit in the round. PM into stitch to indicate BOR.

First Round: K8, k8 tbl*

*Note: you will notice that on the first row only, the sts on the second needle (the last 8 sts) are seated the wrong way. Knit these through the back loops to correct this. You will only have to do this once!

Round 2 (increase round): (K1, M1L, k to last st on needle, M1R, k1), repeat on other needle.Round 3: (plain round): K.

Repeat Rounds 2-3 until there are 14(16) sts on each needle [28(32) sts total].

Foot:Knit in the round until sock is 4.5 inches from your heel*. Measuring hint: try the sock on and pull it as snug as you like your socks. Flex your foot.

*Note: To adjust the pattern for a high instep, work only until the sock is 4.75 inches from your heel. For a very high instep, work only until the sock is 5 inches from your heel. If regular socks fit you fine, ignore this modification.

Gusset:Increase round 1: (K1, M1L, k 12(14), M1R, k1)*, k to end of rnd.

*Note: the stitches between and including the first k1 and the last k1 above constitute the heel stitches. If you are not using Magic Loop, keep in mind that the “heel needle” referred to below refers to the stitches of the heel, whether they are distributed on one needle for Magic Loop or on a few for DPNs.

Round 2: Knit.Increase round 1: (K1, M1L, k to 1 st before the end of heel needle, M1R, k1)*, k to end of rnd.Repeat Rounds 2-3 until the heel contains 32(34) sts.

High instep: repeat rounds 2-3 until heel contains 34(36) sts.Very high instep: repeat rounds 2-3 until heel contains 36(38) sts.

Note: If you are knitting two socks at a time, make sure you are at the very BOR, not in between two socks, before starting the next section. Also, work sections 1 and 2 on the first sock before moving on to the second sock.

Section 1: Turn HeelBegin working back and forth across heel as follows:

Row 1: K21(22), W&T.

Page 4: Toe up socks with heel flap v1 4

Row 2: P10, W&T.Row 3: K to stitch right before wrapped stitch, W&T.Row 4: P to stitch right before wrapped stitch, W&T.Repeat rows 3-4 until 4 unwrapped stitches remain between the wrapped stitches.

Next row: K across row, picking up and knitting the wraps together with the wrapped stitches as you come to them. Stop when you have picked up and knitted the last wrapped stitch. Turn.

Next row: Sl 1, p across row, picking up and purling the wraps with the wrapped stitches as you come to them. Stop when you've picked up the last wrap and purled it together with the stitch it was wrapping. 10(11) sts rem on left-hand needle; there are still 32(34) heel sts total (unless you modified it for a high instep). Turn.

Section 2: Work Heel FlapYou will be working back and forth across the next 18 rows, creating a 12-stitch-wide “heel flap” while simultaneously decreasing the number of stitches on the heel needle.

Fun fact: “heel flap” here is in quotation marks because what we're making only looks and feels like a heel flap. Since there's not any separate flap, or any picking up stitches, this isn't a real heel flap (yay!).

Note: You can work the “heel flap” in Stockinette stitch or in any textured heel stitch. For the socks shown, I used the simple and attractive “slip-stitch heel” below:

Row 1: Sl 1, (k1, sl 1) until 1 st remains before a visible gap in the stitches. SSK. Turn.Row 2: Sl 1, p until 1 st remains before a visible gap in the stitches. P2tog. Turn.Repeat rows 1-2 until 1 st remains on left-hand needle after completing a Row 1. K last st.

Resume knitting in the round, or, if you are working two socks at a time, move on to the second sock and repeat sections 1 and 2. Then resume knitting in the round, two-at-a-time, starting with:

Knit across instep(s).

Next round: K1, k2tog across last remaining gap in heel stitches. K to end of rnd [30(30) sts].

Ankle:Work in St st for 4.5 in.

Finishing

Option 1: Easy Ribbed Cuff (or see Picot Cuff option below)Round 1: *K2, P2, rep from * to end of round.Repeat round 1 for 8 rounds.

BO loosely, using the Invisible Ribbed Bind-Off for 2x2 Rib or any other stretchy bind-off.

Option 2 (shown): Picot Hemmed Cuff (for adventurous or advanced knitters)Hemmed edge set-up:

Rounds 1-6: K.Next round: (YO, k2tog) around.Work 6 more rounds in St st.

Create the hemmed picot bind-off edge:Fold work at the lace round and pick up the purl bump of the stitch 13 rows below, and place the purl bump on the needle (hereafter abbreviated as GB (“get bump”).

YO, k2tog, pso, *GB, YO, k2tog, pso, pso, rep from * until all sts have been bound off. Note that if you are working two socks at a time, you'll have to leave 1 st on the right-hand needle or put it on a stitch marker and bind off the second sock before you can finish binding off the first sock.

Using tapestry needle, weave in all ends securely. Block (optional) and enjoy.
