TRANSCRIPT

A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation.

A program-record 305 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2008-09 season, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams last season, the program has expanded to a record 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams established in the last two years alone.

And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three Valiant squads (men’s basketball, baseball and men’s tennis) earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships in 2008-09 and both the men’s and women’s hockey teams spent much of the year with national rankings. Sixteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference tournaments last year, including four conference championship game appearances. In all, Manhattanville teams posted an impressive .548 winning percentage (184-151-6) last season, with two Valiants teams also setting new program records for wins in a single season.

On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2008-09 as well. Men’s hockey forward Chris Trafford and women’s hockey center Holly Nonis became the 15th and 16th Valiants to earn All-American honors following the season, while the pair were two of four players to be named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned three conference Rookie of the Year awards and 31 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have went on to play professionally either domestically or overseas.

But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.202 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2009 semester. Every Valiant team recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term, while a program-record 89 student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference honorees.

Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student-athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2008-09, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Manhattanville student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission of educating ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.

Coaching StaffHead Coach Anna RiordanThird Season • Binghamton ’07

Anna Riordan, the sixth head women’s lacrosse coach in Manhattanville history, is back for her third season at the helm of the Valiants in 2010.

In only two years, Riordan has produced the two highest single-season win totals in program history and recorded as many winning seasons (two) as had been achieved in the first 14 years of the program combined. Bringing a 20-14 (.556) record into her third season at Manhattanville, Riordan is already second on the program’s career wins list and is only two wins away from becoming the school’s all-time winningest coach in year number three.

Riordan followed a very successful first season with another record-setting year in 2009, guiding the Valiants to an 11-6 record, the most wins in a single season in

school history. The team won its first four games of the year for the best start in program history, and concluded the season with the program’s first-ever berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Valiants also found the net 234 times in 17 games, surpassing Riordan’s 2008 squad for the most goals in a single season at Manhattanville.

Riordan made a big impact in her first year at the helm of the Valiant program in 2008, recording a then-school-record nine wins in 17 games, the program’s first winning season since 2001. The team also went 4-4 in its first season in the Middle Atlantic Conference, finishing just outside the conference tournament with a fifth-place finish. The Valiants ended the season with a flurry, scoring a combined 42 goals in wins over Farmingdale State College and Arcadia University to set new school record for goals in a season with 223.

A 2007 graduate of Binghamton University, Riordan was four-year letterwinner for the Division I Bearcats. She scored 99 points in her 62-game career and was also a strong defensive player, picking up 112 ground balls. A Yorktown, N.Y. native, Riordan served as Binghamton’s captain during her senior season, starting 14 times and leading the team with 13 assists. While at Binghamton, Riordan was a member of the school’s Student Athlete

Advisory Committee and volunteered with the Saint Jude’s Children Hospital and Johnson City Mentor Program.

Since her graduation, Riordan has worked as a coach for Velocity Lacrosse, a traveling lacrosse team of Westchester County players age 11-17 that is based out of John Jay High School. Riordan has also worked as a coach at the Nutmeg Lacrosse Clinics and was the Director of the 2005 Future Stars Lacrosse Camp.

Anita Martignetti is in her second season as an assistant coach on the Valiant sidelines alongside head coach Anna Riordan in 2010.

As an assistant coach with the Valiants, Martignetti is responsible for assisting in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, academic monitoring, fundraising, and game and practice preparation.

In her first season as an assistant, Manhattanville set a new program record with 11 wins and reached the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time.

A 2008 graduate of Babson College, Martignetti is one of the most decorated players in Beaver history, graduating as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 256 career

points. She also ranks first in program history with 66 assists, is second all-time with 190 goals, and ranks third in ground balls with 141.

Martignetti earned NCAA Division III IWLCA All-American honors in her junior and senior seasons, while being named NEWMAC Conference Player of the Year in both seasons. She was named first team All-Conference all four seasons in her collegiate playing career and was a regional All-American from 2006-2008.

As a freshman, Martignetti was honored as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, scoring 43 goals and tallying 14 assists. Her season point totals increased each year in her playing career, peaking her senior season when, as team captain, she scored a career-high 50 goals and matched a personal best with 21 assists for a career-best 71 points.

From 2004-2007, Martignetti worked the Young Guns and Fessenden Lacrosse Camps, serving as a counselor and instructor before being promoted to Field Director at Young Guns and Director of Girls Lacrosse Camp at Fesseden. At the camps, she was responsible for over 50 camper, developing practice plans and helping girls develop their lacrosse skills.

A native of Winchester, Mass., Martignetti currently resides in Purchase, N.Y.

4 2010 Manhattanville Women’s Lacrosse Media Guide

Following a 2009 campaign in which the Val-iants set a program wins record for the second consecutive season, head coach Anna Rior-dan expects more big things from her team in her third season at the helm in 2010.

Manhattanville will have some big holes to fill on the offensive side of the field with the graduation of Abbe Grimes ’09 and Katie Bertel ’09. Grimes finished her career second all-time in goals and fourth in assists in school histo-ry, while Bertel ranked fifth in both goals and points in the Valiant annals. In total, the duo accounted for 98 of the team’s 234 goals (41.9 percent) in their senior seasons.

The Valiants also lost Colleen Holahan ’09 to graduation and Cassie Kovac to transfer, mean-ing that the team will need to replace four of their top six scorers from a year ago.

Despite the losses, Riordan brings back a group of 13 letterwinners and eight returning starters who will look to pick up the offensive slack and return the Valiants to the Middle At-lantic Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season.

ATTACKAs a result of graduation and transfer, the

Manhattanville attacking corps will return just three players return up front from last season and will need help from some newcomers to provide immediate offensive support.

Manhattanville’s leading returning scorer is junior Jen Ascencio, who finished fourth on the team with 26 goals and added eight as-sists for 34 points, which tied her for third on the team in 2009. As a sophomore, Ascencio set new career highs in all three categories and also netted three match-winning goals for the Valiants, and will be looked to as a major of-fensive factor in her third season.

Another key to the Manhattanville attack will be junior Emelda Ogweta, who emerged as an offensive weapon last year after netting 25 goals and assisting on six for 31 points. Eas-ily one of the fastest players in the conference,

the Valiant indoor track star corralled 41 draw controls in 2009 and will use that speed to wreak havoc on opponents both up front and in the midfield yet again in 2010.

Junior Kristy Guichard also made the transition from defense to attack during her first year with the team in 2009 and will look for more production with a full season in the offen-sive end. Last year, she started 13 matches in her first collegiate season and netted 10 goals with an assist.

In addition, Ascencio and Ogweta will be complemented by three freshmen newcomers who look to make immediate impacts. Class-mates Melissa Goncalves and Lauren Rut-ledge both were four-year letterwinners in high school and will make the transition from field hockey to lacrosse in the spring, while fel-low freshman Agbogo Kalu will bring plenty of height and athleticism to the Valiant offensive attack.

MIDFIELDThe Valiant midfield will boast a little more

experience than the attackers, as a pair of starters and some key reserves return to pro-vide leadership on both ends of the turf.

Senior Kirsten Spelman and junior Dar-by Webber both return this year after finish-ing seventh and eighth, respectively, in scoring last season. Spelman netted 12 goals with four assists in 15 matches in 2009 and will be an im-portant member of the Valiant midfield offen-sively. Webber, meanwhile, had 11 goals and two assists starting all 17 contests last season while also picking up 34 ground balls and caus-ing 15 turnovers.

The team also will return senior Callie Housser and junior Sami Berardo, both of whom came off the bench for limited time last year. Housser had three goals and an assist a year ago and will take a more influential role in the midfield as a senior, while Berardo also expects to see more time after netting a goal and an assist in seven matches in 2009.

Another addition to the midfield will come from the defensive ranks, as senior Cybil Rob-inson moves from defense to a defensive mid-field position this year. Robinson was the only Valiant field player to see the turf for every min-ute of every game in 2009, finishing second on the team with 44 ground balls and also causing 13 turnovers in her second season of collegiate lacrosse.

Freshman Erin Saporetti also will come over from the field hockey team to help popu-late the midfield this season, after leading her high school team in scoring in each of her final two seasons.

DEFENSEThe Valiants’ also will boast an experienced

defensive unit, as Riordan returns two starters and three letterwinners as well as welcoming three newcomers to the group.

After starting all 17 matches on defense last year, sophomore Ashley DeMarco will be back to provide experience and presence in the defensive third of the field. DeMarco stepped

into a starting role immediately as a freshman and came off the field for just 10 minutes in 17 matches while forcing 10 turnovers.

Sophomore Nicole Catapano also started most of the Valiant contests a year ago and should become even better in her second col-legiate season. She was in the starting lineup 16 times in her 17 appearances in 2009, corral-ling 32 ground balls with 15 caused turnovers on the year.

Sophomore Danielle Scicutella also is back for her second year with the Valiants in 2010. She appeared in 16 matches off the bench as a freshman and will look to assume a starting role this year with Robinson moving up to the midfield.

A pair of newcomers, junior Tara Pisano and freshman Kelly Murray, also will look to crack the lineup and make an impact in their first collegiate seasons as well.

GOALTENDINGThe goaltending situation also looks to be

in good shape with the return of junior Kirstin Betsill and sophomore Carolyn Levine as well as the arrival of freshman Mary Rose Morrison.

The program’s all-time winningest keeper after just two seasons, Betsill started all 17 matches and backstopped the Valiants to a program-record 11 wins last year with a 13.90 goals against average and a .442 save percent-age. The junior also found the net twice in 30 minutes of field play last season and will be used more frequently as an offensive weapon in 2010 as well.

Levine served as the team’s backup as a freshman, posting a .500 save percentage in three games off the bench. She will look for more playing time in her second season.

Morrison also is expected to battle for play-ing time in the cage once the freshman com-pletes her time with the Valiant women’s hock-ey team during the winter season.

2009 Season in ReviewAfter setting a new school record with

nine wins in 2008, expectations were high for the Valiant women’s lacrosse team entering 2009. The Valiants responded to those hopes by winning a program-record 11 games and reaching the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time, cementing the school’s place as an up-and-coming program both in the conference and in the region.

Manhattanville was led offensively by senior tri-captains Abbe Grimes and Ka-tie Bertel. Bertel paced the Valiants in all three major statistical categories, netting a career-high 50 goals with 10 assists for 60 points in 17 games. Grimes, mean-while, played in just 13 games due to in-jury but still recorded 48 goals and added six assists for 54 points.

In goal, sophomore netminder Kirstin Betsill set a program record for wins in a season for the second straight year with an 11-6 record. Betsill registered a 13.90 goals against average and a .442 save percentage starting all 17 contests for the Valiants.

Manhattanville came out of the gates very hot, posting the best start to a sea-son in program history by winning its first four games. The Valiants opened the year at home with a hard-fought 13-11 win over Western New England College, led by five goals and an assist from Grimes and a career-high 20 saves from Betsill.

The team stayed in Purchase for its MAC opener the next time out versus Wilkes University, eking out a 16-15 win. After the Colonels scored three straight goals to tie the match late, sophomore Emelda Ogweta netted the game-win-ning goal with 1:52 left in regulation to send the Valiants to victory.

The tandem of Grimes and Bertel car-ried the Valiants to their third straight home win to begin the year, combining for 15 goals and two assists and playing a

role in all but one Valiant score in an 18-13 victory over Dominican (N.Y.). Grimes exploded for nine goals and an assist in the win, becoming just the second Valiant to record nine or more goals in a game and also tying for eighth on the school’s single-game points list.

A road trip did little to slow the team down, as the Valiants moved to 4-0 with a 13-12 triumph at Farmingdale State College on March 19. The four straight wins doubled the previous best start to a season, a 2-0 mark set in 2000.

A longer road trip finally was able to subdue the Valiants, as travel troubles delayed its game at Lycoming College and the Valiants had trouble off the bat in a 16-10 loss. The Valiants battled back from an early 7-0 deficit to tie the score at eight, but five straight Warrior goals gave the home team the win.

The team returned to the win column in its next conference contest, a 19-17 win over Widener University. Sophomore Cassie Kovac led the squad with a ca-reer-high six goals as the Valiants scored the final three goals of the game to erase a 17-16 deficit and move to 5-1 on the year.

Manhattanville suffered its only real tough stretch of the season after the Widener game, as the team lost three of its next four contests to fall to 6-4.

The Valiants ran into a tough Eliza-bethtown College squad in a 20-11 loss in Purchase on March 28, but the team bounced back to defeat non-conference SUNY New Paltz by a 14-10 score on the road. Grimes has a game-high six goals in the victory, as the Valiants scored eight of the match’s first 10 goals and never looked back.

The rough patch concluded with back-to-back conference losses to Eastern University, 16-8, and Messiah College, 20-10. Betsill recorded 25 saves in the two games to keep Manhattanville close, while Bertel posted a team-best five goals in the two losses.

A return to non-conference play seemed to re-energize the team, as the Valiants finished an undefeated non-league regular season with a 20-7 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas College. Nine different players scored a goal for the home team in the win, led by Grimes’ five scores and a career high-tying three from senior tri-captain Colleen Holahan.

That win kickstarted a four-match winning streak for Manhattanville that in-cluded three straight Middle Atlantic Con-ference wins to put the Valiants in post-season position.

The Valiants were involved in another home heart-stopper versus Misericordia University on April 9, as the Valiants held off the Cougars behind four Bertel scores in a 13-12 win.

The team then went back on the road

to take on King’s (Pa.) College, and the Valiant dominated the Monarchs to the tune of a 19-8 win. Ten different players scored, including two goals from Betsill, who played the field in the second half. The Valiants held a 15-5 lead at halftime but eased up on the way to an easy win.

The win streak reached three with a 19-10 win over Alvernia University on April 18, tying the program record with the team’s 10th win of the year. The Val-iants used a 12-1 run on both sides of halftime to clinch the win, led by four goals each from Ogweta and Bertel.

Manhattanville had its streak snapped on Senior Night, as the team fell to FDU-Florham by a 17-12 score. Despite the loss, games played earlier in the day en-sured that the Valiants would make the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time in school history.

The Valiants concluded the regular season with a business-like 13-7 win over Arcadia University, the team’s program-record 11th victory. The highlight of the match was the final goal of the game scored by Grimes, who became only the second Valiant ever to reach the 200-goal plateau with the score.

Unfortunately Manhattanville’s first MAC Tournament appearance did not go exactly to plan, as third-seeded FDU-Florham dealt the sixth-seeded Valiants a 21-6 defeat in the first round on April 28. Bertel scored twice in her final collegiate game to give her a team-leading 50 goals on the season.

The Valiants’ record-breaking season included an excellent 7-2 record at GoVal-iants.com Field, the most home wins in a season in program history. Grimes fin-ished her senior year second all-time in goals, third in points and fourth in assists at Manhattanville, while Bertel ended up fifth in both goals and points and sixth in career assists at the school.

Athletic Training

Focused on the development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Department of Athletics views strength and conditioning as one of the most important developmental tools. The facilities inside Kennedy Gymnasium are a testament to that philosophy. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weightandcardiovasculartrainingfacilitylocatedonthebottomfloorofKennedyGymnasium.Theroom includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville College opened a new Student Center in the center of campus that includesafirst-classworkoutareaforthegeneralstudentpopulation,thusmakingHealthworkstheexclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Healthworks is supervised by Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Corey Crane. Crane, along with his assistant strength and conditioning coach, is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 21 Valiant varsity sports.

The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside Kennedy Gymnasium and are the place where all Valiant student-athletes come to receive com-prehensivehealthcarefromanyofManhattanville’sthreefully-certified,full-timeathletictrainers. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. Scott McIver, a veteran of nearly 20 years in sports medicine, is Manhattanville’s Head Athletic Trainer. McIver worked for the Valiants from 2000-02 following a 12-year stint as Associate Athletic Trainer at Pace University, and came back to the school for a second stint beginning in 2006. JR Barkamian joined the staff inAugust 2008asAssistantAthleticTrainer afterspending time at Division I Fordham University. The department also employs a full-time Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer to help coordinate the school’s 21 sports.

Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball teams. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, the coaching staff can address the team before and after games, and the rooms are a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker room facilities inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities. Manhattanville CollegeManhattanvilleCollege, locatedjustnorthof

New York City in thriving Westchester County, has been educating young people on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over 150 years. With only 1,700 undergraduate students, each student is able to make a personal contribution to the campus community in more than 50 areas of study and 50 campus clubs. Also one of the most diverse campuses in the area, Manhattanville attracts students from 48 states and 76 countries.

THE CORE VALUESProudly a value-oriented liberal arts college for

more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.”

Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by:

• Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers.

• Encouraging each student to apply his or her development as an independent leader and creative thinker to career and personal goals.

• Providing a diverse campus community whose members know, care about and support each other and actively engage themselves both in the local community and beyond.

HISTORYFounded in 1841 on Manhattan’s Lower East

Side as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic boarding school for girls, Manhattanville College has been educating students in the New York area for over 150 years.

In 1847, the academy relocated to an area justnorthofNewYorkCityonahilloverlookingthe village of Manhattanville, and was rebuilt there afterafirein1888.

In March of 1917, 76 years after its founding as an academy, Manhattanville was chartered as a college by the New York State Board of Regents, allowing the school to grant undergraduate and graduatedegrees.Thirty-fiveyearslater,in1952,Manhattanville moved to its current location in Purchase, N.Y., on the estate of former publisher Whitelaw Reid.

Co-educational since 1969 and non-

denominational in its governance since 1971, Manhattanville’s original vision lives on in the tradition of service begun by the Society of the Sacred Heart. This tradition, which preceded the college’s charter, determined the character theschoolwouldhave:afirmbeliefinenhancingboth the local and global community and to accept responsibility for this segment of human history.

NEW YORK CITYWhile on the school’s beautiful 100-acre

campus, students are only a 30-minute car or train ride from New York City, blending the leisurely pace of suburbia with the rich cultural resources of the most populous city in the United States.

Manhattanville’s location offers students a unique opportunity to take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Whether you want toenjoyaBroadwayshow, catchaprofessionalsports event, tour a museum or simply take in the city’s many well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or Times Square, the city offers somethingforeveryonetoenjoy.

The school’s proximity to the worldwide leader infinance, entertainmentandculturealsooffersManhattanville students a unique and exciting chanceforjobsandinternshipsbothinthecityandin the thriving New York City suburbs, including right in Purchase!

“WHAT HAPPENS HERE MATTERS”Manhattanville’s tradition of community

and service continues today with the school’s continuing effort to ensure “What Happens Here Matters.” Countless students are involved annually in a number of community service and social action programs.

Last year, Manhattanvi l le ’s students contributed over 30,000 hours of service while gaining valuable experience in such areas as management, teaching and advocacy.

At the heart of Manhattanville’s ethic of community service and service learning is the Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice. The center, which coordinates many of Manhattanville’s service programs, promotes programs that endeavor to create a climate in which all Manhattanville College members will value an appreciation for the differences among us.

MY SOLDIERManhattanville’s most well-known social action

program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour.

Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.”

When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.

Participants in the My Soldier program, who are not limited to Manhattanville students, send letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops.

Anon-politicallyaffiliatedprogram,My Solider has been wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
