To The Parents Summer Fun

Our children have been treated to a whole range of exciting opportunities this week and I have taken immense pleasure from seeing how much they have enjoyed themselves, even if some of that pleasure was derived from throwing wet sponges at me and the other teachers!

The summer fete was a great success, and I would like to thank those who contributed, especially Mrs Appleby-Mell for coordinating this family event. The blustery weather and occasional shower did not dampen the spirits of those who attended and a good time was had by all. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

On Monday, as you will read more about on this page, around 60 children were involved in a very special world premiere at the Guildhall. The hairs on the back of my neck are still standing up following this outstanding event, which has provided a lifelong memory for those involved.

Yesterday, I waved off every one of our pupils as they deserted the School to attend their annual Activity Day. As you can imagine, and I am sure witnessed with you own child/ren, the excitement in the air was tangible.

Today, of course was KS2 Sports Day and House Picnics, and there will be more detailed reports on this event in next week’s Lion. The children thoroughly enjoy representing their Houses and at the same time relish the opportunity to achieve individual goals.

I am sure there will be a few tired children this weekend, but with large smiles on their faces as they reflect on the things they have done.

Travel Survey Earlier this week you received an e-mail asking you to complete a survey on our bus service, run by Lucketts. I would ask that as many of you as possible complete this so that we can get a true picture of your views on this service. It is only a short survey so should not take long and by submitting it you will be entered into a prize draw, so certainly worth doing. PS Hopkinson Headmaster

Fabulous Fete

Amazing Ahoy!

Earlier this week our Upper and Lower Junior School Choirs took part in a very exciting world premiere at the Guildhall. They performed, to an audience of over 1200, Alexander L’Estrange’s Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose. The concert was part of this year’s Portsmouth Festivities, and involved around 400 singers from nine different choirs. The evening was hosted by comedian Hugh Dennis.

The energy pulsating from the stage was extraordinary and raised the roof of the Guildhall by some measure.

In Act One of the concert each school/choir presented their own maritime themed piece and our own children were superb as they sang two numbers, the second a complicated round about seasickness!

Act Two was the much anticipated performance of Ahoy!, the culmination of eighteen months preparation and many hours of rehearsal. It was a magnificent performance by all involved and it was made extra special by the fact that the children were helping tell the next chapter of the Mary Rose’s amazing story. We were very proud to be part of it and also of the contribution of our Junior School singers.

Copies of the official Ahoy! CD, featuring our very own choirs, are available on iTunes.

Rory’s Story of the week will return next week but he does need some new stories.

So please get writing, he would love to hear from you.

Nursery News

The children had a lovely time last week talking about their favourite dinosaurs and why they like them. The children worked together to create a dinosaur environment using wood chips, sand, twigs and water. A large junk T Rex was built in the creative area and the children became archaeologists, looking for fossils in the sand pit. They used paintbrushes to carefully brush away the sand to reveal the fossils.

Amazing Day!

Last Thursday Year One was really lucky to be able to go to Southsea beach. It was a bit touch and go whether we would make it as we didn’t know whether the weather would hold out, but amazingly it did. We had a super time doing a variety of activities, including rubbings, sorting things by shade and tone, sketching the landscape (where we had to use our imagination as it was very foggy), charcoal observational drawings, art attack pictures with beach objects, making wavy pictures through watching the waves, data handling, making sandcastles and finally cleaning up the beach. We then kept the items we collected and sorted them into groups that could be recycled. It was extremely fun and we wrote postcards to tell our families about our amazing day!

Barnardos Beans

I was overwhelmed with your responses to our Barnardos Beans Challenge. Some of you clearly have green fingers and have put them to extremely good use. Not only have you succeeded in growing (or inventing) bean plants, but I am pleased to announce that you raised a magnificent £2049.39. The money that you have raised will go towards a local project, where some of our members of the Sixth Form will be volunteering during the summer months. Well done, you all deserve a pat on the back!

Join the Beach Cleaners

Walk along a UK beach and, on average, you’ll find 2000 pieces of litter per kilometre. Beach litter is now a problem on a global scale and has major impact on wildlife.

We will be meeting at 10.00am on Sunday 30th June at the public car park on the beach between Gunner Point and the Ferry on Hayling Island, but not in the Ferry Boat Inn pub car park. The pick will begin at 10.00am after we have had a health and safety briefing; clear instructions will also be given on exactly how the ‘pick’ is to be carried out. The event will be finished by 11.00 and pupils can be picked up from the car park where they were dropped off.

Year Five Dancing into Assembly

Year Five were treated to a talk and performance from a former PGS pupil on Monday morning. Samantha Bosshardt joined The Junior School in Reception and by 2003, when she was just 9, she was dancing with The National Youth Ballet Company; we even had the mounted photo to show her! Samantha is currently working with the Vienna Festival Ballet and described her daily routine, how she managed to become a successful dancer and her hopes for the future. We could not get over the amazing hours of hard work and dedication which Samantha puts in to her life and career. She handed around her “Points” which demonstrated how much determination must go toward dancing on your tiptoes. After we had listened to excerpts of “The Sleeping Beauty” and identified the gifts given to the tiny princess, Samantha danced three of the sections – it was wonderful.

Samantha and her colleagues are running a summer school from 29th July. If anyone from the age of 9 upwards is interested in the details, please contact Mrs Giles on [email protected]. The week includes, ballet, contemporary, Jazz dancing as well as workshops in classical mime, stage hair and make-up.

U8A Rounders On 13th of June the Under 8A team played a home match against St. Ives school (Haslemere).

The match nearly got rained off and it was so windy that the posts kept blowing over.

PGS batted first and we scored 5½ rounders. Then St. Ives batted and scored 3½ rounders.

For the second innings we played without the posts and just used the bases. We scored 4½ more rounders and St. Ives got another 4½ too. The final score was a win for PGS 10 rounders to 8.

Two notable performances were from Emma Hale who scored two full rounders and caught two St. Ives batters out from her position as backstop and also a fantastic catch by Isabella Devereux from a really high ball hit by a St. Ives batter.

The PGS A team was: Emma Hale, Isabella Devereux, Elsa Hares, Daisy Crane, Alice Hudson, Louisa McKay, Emily Gibbs, Amelie Parker, Susie Taylor and Lucinda Hawdon. By Daisy Crane

U9 B V Cranleigh

On Thursday 20th of June the U9 rounders teams went to Cranleigh School for their last match of the season. The match was Imogen’s first and she was captain for the Bs and got player of the match. Hannah R-K played very well on 2nd post and Sakina backed Hannah R-K up very well in 2nd deep. Hannah M managed to get two people out with her very speedy legs at 2nd post and there was great running from Harriet Millar who scored 2 rounders. Mrs Dossett said I had good steady bowling. Unfortunately we lost but Cranleigh played a really good game. For the last match of the season we all played really well and we are looking forward to another term of great rounders in 2014. Local Schools Tournament 2013 – 6th June 2013

On a very sunny day, 11 local school teams arrived at Hilsea to play in a High Five versatility Netball tournament. Our

U10s played, and won, a few hard fought matches against schools, drawing only one in the first round against Court Lane Juniors. With some superb match play, mainly with the girls playing out of position, each member of the team proved just how versatile they were, most notably some fantastic shooting by Poppy Herbert!

With the top 2 teams from each group playing in the semi-finals, Court Lane played Victory School, whilst we played a contested semi-final against St Jude’s. Having won, we once again had to play Court Lane in a goal-for-goal final. After a long 8 minutes and a fight to the bitter end from both teams, the final whistle blew and both schools had scored 2 goals respectively, becoming joint winners!

Well done to all the girls for displaying some brilliant and versatile netball skills, and fighting until the final whistle!
