Thomas Morley (1 557-1 602), the exclusive holder of the Queens patent for publishing music from 1598 until his death, was especially prominent and prolific as a composer of madrigals (secular vocal music) including two of his most famous My Bonny Lass and Now is the Month ofMaying heard here.

Philipp Nicolai (1 556 - 1608) was a German poet, minister and composer. He wrote the hymn Wachet Auf (Sleepers Awake) which Bach later used as the basis for one of his most famous compositions. Many of Nicolai's hymns have become a staple of the Lutheran Church where they are not only songs of praise but teach tenets of the faith as well.

Nuremburg-born Johann Pachelbel(1653-1706) may have been histories first one-hit wonder. Actually he was a well-respected and famous organist, composer and teacher while he lived. However it is only with his popular Canon that has cemented his claim to fame with listeners today. The work is a set of variations above a repeated two-measure bass line (or ground). -.

Jeremiah Clarke (1674 - 1707), a pupil of John Blow, rose to be Master of Choristers at St. Paul's CathedraLThough quite talented, he had a troubled and short life - he committed suicide - but left us the brilliant keyboard piece Prince of Denmark's March from 1700. When rescored for brass it has taken on the more popular name Trumpet Voluntary.

John Dowland (1 563 - 1626) was one of the most popular singers and lutenists of his day. Born in London, he first tried to get position in the French court but found his fortune and fame in Denmark, where he became one of the highest paid servants of the Danish courts before returning to England. His songs dealt primarily with courtly love or moments of melancholy. The madrigal Come Again, Sweet Love 00th Now Invite is from his First Book of Songs of 1597.

Born during the reign of Henry VII, Thomas Tallis (1 505 -1 585) served and performed for four English heads of state - Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. He held posts in London and Canterbury and was a contemporary, coworker and friend of composer William Byrd. Tallis's Canon is from his Nine Psalm Tunes of 1567.

Giovanni da Palestrina (1 525-1 594) was an Italian Renaissance composer who best represented the-Roman School of composition, where the use of polyphony - two or more independent lines of music - became popular- ized. He has had a lasting effect on the music of the Catholic Church where he composed hundreds of masses, offertories, hymns and motets - many still in use today.

FROM PACHELBEL TO PURCELL

A native of Avignon, Jean-Joseph Mouret (1 682-1 738) live and thrived in Paris where he produced operas, ballets and generally hobnobbed among courtly society. He was known asUmusician of the Graces" by his contemporaries. His festive Rondeau is from his Suite de Fanfares, of 1729. It is of course known today more familiarly as theTheme from Masterpiece Theater on PBS.

Henry Purcell(1659 -1695) was most comfortable in the church or the theater. A boy soprano, he grew to become the most famous composer following the Restoration. During his short life he wrote extensively for the stage as well as for the royal court. Trumpet Tune and Ayre as well as the Sonata in D were both originally written for harpsichord but make for a perfect setting with glorious brass instruments. Purcell is buried in Westmin- ster Abbey, where he was chapel organist - a creative genius and faithful servant to the crown.

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) was the culmination of an era and his name is synonymous with the mastery of Baroque composi- tion.Throughout his life, he was well aware of the value of other composer's works and made a point of studying them as well as reworking them with his own treatments. The Concerto heard here is an arrangement of Bach's keyboard version of Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in G, the second (RV. 188) from the set of twelve concertos of Vivaldi's Op.7, written in 1716.

John Stanley (1 71 2 - 1786) was an English composer and organist. Blind from an early age, he became a noted musician in London - as well as a friend of Handel. He wrote opera, oratorio and three volumes of Voluntar- ies- works for organ that featured a solo-stop movement that can easily be performed as a solo trumpet piece with accompaniment.

Girolamo Frescobaldi (1 583-1 643) spent most his life as organist a t St. Peters in Rome. He is widely credited with developing the toccata form and was a well-published composer during his lifetime. The Toccata heard here, from 1630, begins with a doleful theme played by the horn and is reminiscent of Albinoni's famous Adagio in G minor. A sprightly Allegro follows which scholars believe it to be actually a composition by Alfredo Casella, an early 20th century composer who intentionally added his own works to the Italian Renaissance canon.

The Lord's My Shepherd is a hymn by Jessie S. lrvine (1 836-1 883), the daughter of a Church of Scotland parish minister. The tune was written in 1872 and takes i ts words from the Scottish Psalter of 1650. It has come to be known by the simple title of Crimond, named for the small village in the northeast of Scotland where her father once served.

Handel was unmarried and had no children; Bach was married twice - his second wife was Anna Magdalena, to whom Bach famously dedicated a notebook of his compositions - and between them he had over twenty children, many of Bach's sons became noted composers.

Handel may have written the most festive music of the Baroque Era while Bach wrote the most introspective. Handel wrote opera and oratorio; Bach preferred writing for the keyboard and liturgical works. Where Handel worked mostly in the theater; Bach worked in the church. Handel was well-known and a famous composer during his lifetime; Bach was known primarily as a great organist and was not celebrated as a composer at all. Handel earned a handsome living from many published works; Bach had very little published in his lifetime - including only one choral work. When Handel died he left a sizable fortune to a favorite niece back in Germany; Bach's estate was Valued at about $1 000 when he died, leaving his widow almost penniless. Finally Handel was a cosmopolitan c'omposer bringing many"schools of music"into play in his works while Bach primarily brought the prevailing German Baroque style to full flower and maturity.

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor is a benchmark in contrapuntal writing with its tremendous architecture laid out before us as a cathedral of sound is literally built. The opening theme which spirals down to i t s diminished seventh chord is ominous and imposing and sets the stage for the brilliant fugue - made up entirely of sixteenth notes - that follows. The Little Fugue features one of Bach's most recognizable themes. Editors titled the work Little to avoid confusion between it and the Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, which is longer in duration.

The Art of the Fugue by Bach is an unfinished work exploring the contra- puntal possibilities within a single musical statement. Each of the fourteen fugues in the set use the same deceptively simple subject. Beyond i t s sheer musical genius and creativity, the intriguing work has been described as a display of nonmusical theories and postulates that Bach demonstrates with perfect balance, unity of key signatures, numerology and even the movement of celestial bodies. Contrapunctus I, the first fugue of the book, features a simple four-voice fugue based on the main theme. Finally, his own Chorale Werde munter, mein Gemuthe, BWV 1 1 18, was reworked by Bach into his famous movement Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata No. 147.

BETWEEN BACH & HANDEL

Handel and Bach - no two composers have been linked more and no two composers were more unalike.

Both were born in Germany in the year 1685 -about a month apart with just 80 miles between them; both lost their eyesight in their last years - in fact they shared the same ophthalmologist, one Dr. John Taylor, who held the post of eye doctor in the court of King George II; both were excellent keyboard virtusosi; both could play other instruments quite well and both are considered the two most important composers of the Baroque era. Finally - both were without a doubt - musical geniuses that left a bounty of musical treasures that continue to inspire and bring delight.

Their differences were many and diverse.

Handel was the only musician in his family and his father initially forbid him to practice music; Bach came from a long line of well-known musicians going back many generations. Handel studied at the University in Hamburg; Bach learned his craft as an apprentice. Handel made every effort to travel - studying in Italy and settling abroad in London; Bach rarely traveled more than 100 miles from the town of his employ.

Page 16: to (Purcell) (Vivaldi-Bach) - Naxos Music Library · PDF fileTHE CLASSICS From Pachelbel to Purcell Rondeau (Mouret) 1 :45 Sonata in D major for Trumpet (Purcell) 4:08 Concerto in

The suites that constitute Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks have remained two of Handel's most popular works. Unlike most Handel compositions, both these pieces were created for public open-air events. The first Fireworks music performance drew the largest crowd of Handel's career - a fireworks display was offered to celebrate the peace of Aix-la- Chapelle, with a concert of new music by Handel beforehand. The Water Music was commissioned for a sequence of royal boating parties (taking part on excursion barges on theThames) for the newly installed King George I.

Handel's brought something new to oratorio - he abandoned the standard Germanic gloom and musty sentiments and instead presented them in the festive Italian style - replete with both celebratory and spiritual arias and choruses. His most famous oratorio, Messiah, is a reflective piece - with the Hallelujah Chorus an example of Handel's skill at writing a powerful and direct melodic line - while his others are closer to opera in terms of dramatic narrative. The Largo, included, is actually the instrumental version of the opening aria Ombra mai fu from his opera Xerxes.

Bizet later created an orchestral suite from his score. With his untimely death, his friend and colleague Ernest Guiraud, compiled a second suite, which includes the Farandole, a vigorous dance based on a Provencal melody.

Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) was a true nationalist. His music represents all things Norwegian - imbued with i ts history, tradition, geography and folk music. The music to Peer Gynt was written to accompany Henrik Ibsen's famous play about the adventurous title character - part lover, part dreamer, part innocent braggart - and his many travels. In The Hallofthe Mountain King takes place when Peer, returning home from his adventures in the Bedouin desert, meets and tries to escape the terrifying and deadly Troll King and his foreboding castle.

One of the first major composers to write specifically for any brass instru- ment was Franz Joseph Haydn (1 732 - 1809). In 1796, at the request of the Viennese trumpet master Anton Weidinger, who had just developed a new 'organized trumpet'that could play chromatic notes, Haydn wrote his trumpet concerto. His use of scale patterns and sudden key shifts showcased the features of thenewfangled keyed instrument. For over two hundred years, the concerto has come down to all trumpeters as one of the great works written for their instrument. Here the Andante, with i ts plaintive melody, is heard.

lgnace Pleyel(1757 - 1831) was an Austrian composer who was a pupil of Haydn. Not only one of Haydn's favorite students, Pleyel became an assistant to Haydn and helped transcribe scores and in some instances write

in 191 6.The lyrics refer to folklore that says Jesus visited Britain as a teenager with Joseph of Arimathea. Conventional and strong, it is the epitome of Edwardian England.

With a unique life-style compounded by his sheer mastery of the violin, Nicolai Paganini (1 782 - 1840) epitomized the nineteenth-century's flamboyant, eccentric and'free'artist. A violin prodigy and virtuoso par excellence - he won the admiration of established musicians, the exploit- ative nobility, critics and most importantly to him - women. He made an effort to dazzle and impress - playing works (usually his own) that exhibited his phenomenal finger dexterity and awesome skill. The 24 Caprices offer more than an exhibition of his daredevilry. Here the final caprice features the horn. Soloist Jeff Nelsen is more than up to the task, able to toss off each line as he wanders nearer and nearer the breaking point of instrumental pyrotechnics.

Amazing Grace, the most popular hymn in America today, dates back to the colonial era.The melody is of folk origin - some believe it may have originated as a slave song. The simple and direct words are by John Newton, a minster who is the self-proclaimed "wretchwho"once was lost, but then was found': He was originally a captain of a sailing ship, and after surviving a violent storm at sea and nearly losing his life, he dedicated his remaining days to the church. The hymn first appeared in print as early as early 1779.

MOZART & MORE

Ludwig van Beethoven's (1 770-1 827) symphonies were a critical part of the development not only of the symphonic form but also played a promi- nent role in the history of the Romantic Movement overall.Today they continue to hold sway and inspire. They are nod to the classical era, a mirror to the times they were written and a portent of the future of music. His last -the Ninth, Op. 125 - sets Schiller's poem Ode to Joy in the final movement, bringing the symphony to a triumphant conclusion. The theme has become a stand-alone anthem of brotherhood and fraternity.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1 756-1 791) had been intrigued by the horn, and all wind instruments for that matter, for most of his astonishing career. Mozart's lifelong friend lgnaz Leitgreb played the horn and it led to not only magnificent part writing for the horn by Mozart, but cumulated with the four horn concertos and the Horn Quintet, K.407.The three movement work is Mozart delighting in the art of composition complete with beauty, balance, melody and humor. The Rondo finale offers a sparkling finish and a chance for the horn to display its great virtuosity.

Georges Bizet (1 838-1875) is primarily known for hisi'Spanish"opera Carmen. Chock full of memorable tunes, exotic women, love triangles and murder - it makes for the perfect opera.TheToreador Song evokes images of the bullring and the bravado of the men who wearUthe suit of lights". Bizet also composed the incidental music to the stage play L'Arlesienne, about a girl from the city of Arles in the South of France, Initially a flop,

parts for some of Haydn's operas. Eventually establishing himself as a composer in Paris, where he composed symphonies and chamber music. Pleyel - like his friend Haydn - made a sensation while touring London in the 1790s. It was there that he composed the St. Anthony Chorale - which was originally attributed to the more famous Haydn. This tune was used later on as the basis of Brahms own Variations on a Theme by Haydn.

Franz Schubert's (1 797 - 1828) music was almost entirely neglected during his lifetime. One of the more prolific composers in history he composed over a thousand known works including symphonies, chamber music, songs and liturgical works. The Sanctus is from his antiphon for Palm Sunday.

The song Gaudeamus igitur (Lets UsTherefore Rejoice) with its Latin text has become more well-known as a German student drinking song. In 1880 Johannes Brahms (1 833-1 897) wrote the AcademicFestivalOverture as a gesture of gratitude to the University of Breslau, which had just awarded him an honorary doctorate. Keeping with the collegiate atmosphere and spirit, he peppered the work with "a rollicking potpourri of student songs" which included the Gaudeamus igitur - perhaps more a lampoon given the serious nature of the occasion.

The anthem Jerusalem by C.H. H."Hubertn Parry (1 848-1 91 8) is set to text by the English poet William Blake. The theme is uniquely English, and there is an undertone of politics - it was originally composed for a suffragette rally
