This will be the last edition of the Raider Re-

view from the editors of Mr. Cunha’s period four Writing and the Media class. Because this is a half year course, not all of these editors will be able to con-tinue writing for our beloved Raider Review. We have all enjoyed learning about the jour-nalism and the reporting process.

We are passing the torch to the Writ-ing and the Media class of Mr. McMahon. The name of the paper will be the same and should be as informative and interesting as we tried our best to be. We hope you enjoyed our articles and got to know more about your school. Thanks for reading!

Thompsonville Fire By Natasia Mysliwiec & Megan Fisher

On December 26th 2010 at about 1:00 a.m. on the corner of High and Pearl Street in Thompsonville, Enfield fire-fighters were on the scene of a building engulfed in flames.

The fire department had a hard time getting to the fire because of the heavy winds from the storm that was going on which made the fire more intense. Their main concern was to put the fire out and prevent it from spreading to St.Patrick’s right next door which previously burned down in 1949 and the Creamery next door. Ladder trucks were used to pour walls of water between the burning build-ing and adjacent structures that were in danger. They succeeded in this task of protecting neighboring buildings but were unable to save the original build-ing that was burning.

The building was for mixed–use and no one was sure at the time as to how many peo-ple lived in the structure. Two firefighters suffered minor inju-ries in fighting the fire.

The building appeared to be a total loss but the build-ing officials would make the

final determination. The cause of the fire was traced to a transformer that blew very close to the house that started the first sparks of the fire. Several businesses

were housed on the build-ing's first floor, including Gladys Alterations, a nail

salon and a tattoo shop.

With many families after the disaster at a loss with no shelter and basic supplies, Enfield High School is now lending a helping hand by raising money in different ways to donate to the families of

fire.

Responsibility for run-ning the fundraiser and collect-ing money are Caitlin Barry and Jessica Burby.

The Food Shelf has also set up a relief fund for the victims and checks can be written for the fund in the month of January. Voices for Thompsonville will also be holding a fundraiser at their January meeting to provide assistance to the victims.

Enfield High School’s “Tops for Thompsonville” was set up on January 14th that allowed

students to donate a dollar and be allowed to wear a hat in school for the day. The money will be donated to the families in need. During lunch waves there was also a collection of any items that wanted to be given to the families for students to bring in.

Enfield High Students Won’t Go To Spain By Cameron Sutphin

This year the students of Enfield High School will not be going to Spain. This was a shock as many students look forward to the Spain trip. However, this year not enough students were able to go. Some could not get the money in time for the deposit while some dropped out due to the administration having to change plans. Because IES Ribera has the same vacation week as EHS, which occurs during the trip, the students from Spain often leave their hometown on spring break. Therefore the administration arranged for the students to spend the week with another family in the town of Sala-manca . The reason that some students dropped out was that they would have to go to a language school in Salamanca. The students would actually have to do all of the homework and take all of the tests. At the end of the week all of the students would have received a certifi-cate from the language school to file in their EHS records. Señora Dalpe, the De-partment chair of the world language department, said that Salamanca is a very safe town, and there is no truth in the rumor that the town is un-

safe. “It is a very safe town” Dalpe says, “When you think of Spanish you think of Salamanca, it is the birthplace of the Spanish language.” Señora Jenson has been

to Salamanca to study Spanish and get her mas-ters and says that it is a wonderful and safe place, one of the safest in Spain. Jessica Scheer, a former EHS student who went to Spain through the pro-gram twice plans to do her masters degree in Salamanca this summer. This year’s group consisted of sophomores, juniors, and one senior. However, the senior de-cided to go this summer with her family so it was better to wait until next year for a larger group. In their place, the language department plans to send a DVD of Enfield events in April for the English teachers

to use in their classrooms. The money that CT Spain raised this year will either go towards next year’s trip, or be used for excursions when the Spanards come in the fall. CT Spain will continue to fundraise. With the kids having more money that will mean they will have to pay less out of pocket. Currently Señora Dalpe and Señora O’Neill are trying to book the school in Salamanca for five days if there is another conflict with vacations for around $2,400. This is an afford-able price, and the price is this low because Señora Dalpe and Señora O’Neill do not get paid for their work. “Going to Spain is not a vacation for us,” says Señora Dalpe. “We have to leave lesson plans for a sub for two weeks, correct the papers, and prepare for new lessons upon return.” In addition Señora Dalpe and Señora O’Neill are always working while they are with the students in Spain. Despite this year, the program will continue with IES Ribera. Teresa Blanco, a teacher at the high

Enfield High Gives Blood By Alex King

On Friday, January 6th, Enfield High was

lucky enough to have the American Red

Cross come to the school.

Every student seventeen and older was

allowed the chance donate

blood. To give blood you could

sign up with Mr. Barnes or you

could walk in the day of the

blood drive to donate.

Even though they had to stop

the donations at 11 a.m. because

of the early dismissal they still managed

to receive over forty donations of blood

including teachers and students. It was a

huge success and the American Red

Cross was very pleased.

The blood drive was also lucky enough

to receive donations from Costco and

Whole Donut so that there were snacks

for the volunteers who gave blood.

Members of the Teen Leadership

class volunteered their day to help as-

sist the people who gave blood

and help everyone sign in. “I

really enjoyed helping out at the

blood drive. It was fun,” says

Mickey Chavez of Mr. Gaucher’s

Teen Leadership class.

The American Red Cross plans

to visit Enfield High again in the up-

coming months. If you are interested

in giving blood look for more details

on how you can sign up.

school in Spain, will ap-ply for their government scholarship to bring her students for the 9th year. By lining up our host families now, the stu-dents can get to know each other via email prior to their arrival. We should be thankful that we have these two teachers in our school who are willing to devote so much of their

time to this program. If anyone is interested in the CT Spain pro-gram, they should see Señora Dalpe as soon as possible. Meetings are held once a month.

DECA Meets Disney By Grace Hallak, Rachel Boulette, and Rachel Osada

For the first time in three

years, the DECA class of

2011 is lucky enough to

have the chance to go to Or-

lando, Florida for the Sports

and Entertainment Market-

ing Conference.

This was possible

because of the fundraising

efforts from the senior Mar-

keting students.

In November, the

students held a raffle for a

42” VIZIO HDTV. It was

very successful and brought

in around $3500. DECA

members who sold a certain

amount of tickets had the

cost of their trip reduced.

The students left on

Tuesday, February 1st,

2011. The flight departed at

6:30am and arrived in beau-

tiful Orlando at around

10:30 Tuesday morning.

While on the trip

they planned to enjoy the

different Disney theme

parks, attend a performance

by the Blue Man Group, and

experience other Disney at-

tractions.

DECA stayed at the

Disney All-Star Sports Re-

sort and left early in the

morning for all different

kinds of conferences. Stu-

dents will be given an as-

signment to go throughout

the park.

One of the stu-

dents, Sarah Reinhard,

said, “I’m so excited for

the trip, it’s going to be a

fun, new, learning experi-

ence for all of us.”

“I already made

my packing list,” said

Taylor Flagg. “We’re all

looking forward to this

and have been counting

down the days for the past

couple of months.”

even scholarships to go

along with them. She plans

on filing her FAFSA appli-

applications that are avail-

two to four year college or

As graduation approaches, high school seems to matter less and less. You begin to think more and more about what comes after. First, a summer filled with friends, fun, and good-byes. Then, packing and leaving for college. You won-der what your first weeks at col-lege will be like. Will you get along with your roommate? Will you be able to keep up with the work? Will you ever see your high school friends again? Now is the time to really get going, and hopefully your finishing up those college applica-tions. During this time of the year all college bound high school seniors should be filing out the FAFSA application and look-ing for different scholarships to help pay those hefty college bills. Check out the free FAFSA on the Web the way to apply online for student financial aid! When you apply online, you don't hassle with paperwork, and you get your re-sults faster. Plus, help filling out your FAFSA is built into the sys-tem, so you'll know what to do as you go on. You can even talk live online with a customer service rep-resentative if you need personal assistance. Schools equipped for electronic communication with the Depart-ment of Education will receive

your FAFSA information auto-matically. If you're filing a pa-per application, you can use the Federal School Code Search to look up codes for the colleges you are considering so that you can list them correctly on the FAFSA. Everyone should also make sure you know the deadline for the school, or even specific pro-

grams you are applying to at your school. Many deadlines may be differ-ent based on the region of your school and what your major is. A com-mon deadline for most schools is around Febru-ary to March 1st.

Scholarships are very important to most students as well when they are preparing and trying to figure out how they are going to pay for school. It may be a tedi-ous task and take a while to find the ones that pertain to you, but it is all worth it in the end. You can always find many different scholarship applications in the guidance office, and the internet works as well, Beware of scam scholarships though Many seniors are already on the

fast track to their schools and

have already finished applica-

tions and received acceptance

letters from their schools of

choice. Megan Fisher has al-

All year long people find things they don’t like and want to change. Whether they plan to cut their hair short or start a foundation support-ing St Jude's Hospital, sometimes it takes many months of hard work to reach your goal. All reso-lutions are for the best. They are what people wish for and strive for. You don’t hear people say they want to run over by a car in the 2011 year. If you do, maybe your resolution can be getting this per-son some help. Well the New Year comes fast. Many seniors are starting to get excited. They only have five months to go. Sophomores also feel the pres-sure of CAPT testing, which is coming up fast in March. Let’s not forget those juniors, who only have to brave one more semester, of what some people call, the hardest year of high school. Lastly, of course, many freshmen are amazed that they are half way through their first year. Time flies, and everyone has to make the most of it. In Enfield High there are many students, teachers, and other Faculty who have created reso-lutions for the 2011 year. Mrs. Dalpe, also known as Senora Dalpe, of the Spanish department has shared her resolu-tion. Like many people, Mrs. Dalpe has made it her goal to lose weight, however, her resolution involves much more. “I have so many things go-ing on right now, and all I need to do is organize it or take control of it.”Mrs. Dalpe believes that if she can organize her home life, with her school

life, she can accomplish many things this year, in-cluding losing weight. Each and every student has a wish or goal for the year. Many seniors are completely focused on college and graduation. Here is one senior’s resolution. Angela Devito says, “My resolution is to become a vegetarian.” This all started when An-gela read an article about animal abuse. “I was dis-gusted.” Afterwards she decided to never eat meat again. When Angela was asked how she would reach her goal, this was her reply. “I will take extra vitamins and at work, I will only have grilled cheese sandwiches.” Angela is very focused on college and all her AP courses. Therefore school is a priority in her life. Good luck Angela! All students are different. Senior, Jennifer Boyd said, “I plan to finish my novel.” Jen is cur-rently writing her first novel and has completed about four chapters. Although she is also focusing on college, Jen says, she has to make room for what she loves. Famous people also have resolutions. President Obama shared his resolution with report-ers on January 1st. President Obama wants to grow the economy, create jobs, and strengthen the mid-dle class. The whole world has welcomed the New Year in many ways. Everyone at Enfield High should have a resolution. What is your New Year Resolution for 2011?

Drama Productions

By Ashley Piepul Dinner Mystery Theater: Satur-day, January 29th from 5:30 to 9:00 “Trouble at the Talent Show” was performed by the EHS Lamplight-ers. Tickets were $22 dollars a per-

son and $40 for couples. Though it may seem kind of pricy it’s definitely worth it. This was a wonderful tal-ent show filled with laughs and a fantastic audience who helped solve the mystery while they ate. Dinner, drinks, and desert were served. It’s been a long road to find those who could fill the parts. At first there wasn’t enough auditions and a sec-ond one had to be held. Later some had to drop out due to grades and illness, but they’ve pulled it together quite

well. Mary Hastings , the president of the Thespian So-ciety, says “ I always have so much fun with all the shows we put on, however with all of these snow days we have to keep canceling rehearsals.” She has a lead in the Dinner Mystery Theater and is the President of the Lamplighters honor members. This is the biggest cast they’ve had for a dinner mystery theater in a long time. It was a great time willed with lots of laughs. They even had an extra talent act by Audrey Carmen.

Children's theater: On Feb 19th at 7 pm lamplighters will be doing “Snow White and the seven dwarves” Most People were surprised that freshman Madison LaRusso got the role of Snow white. In reality the lead role is played by Jennifer Boyd as Grovella, the hand-maid of Snow White and Queen Vanity.

Ski Club By Ben Hosley & Kristina Messina

For some, winter and all of these snow showers are a pain and nothing more, but for the ski club it’s come at no better a time. The Ski Club, run by Mr. Smith, is a field trip based program where the students travel to Berkshire East on a weekly basis. Friday, January 14th, was their first out-ing as the Friday before was ironically canceled due to snow storm. Many people were un-sure if the trip would be rescheduled, but as far as the administration of the club knows, it will be rescheduled. Date and time to be announced. Mr. LaMesa, who travels with the ski club every week as a chaper-one, said, “I’m really ex-cited. Hopefully I will pro-gress in my snowboarding skills.” For many people who aren't able to get out to the big mountains much, ski club is a great opportunity to im-prove your skills with other people and in this way ski club has been a great way for everyone to just get out and improve. If you’ve ever wanted

to have a group of people to go out and ski or snow-board with or just want to learn but weren't aware ski club was going on, don't worry. It’s not too late. The ski club notices that the students have lives outside

of school. So, in an effort to include those people there is a guest program. A student can go on a trip with the ski club for about $50. You just have to fill out normal club forms which include insurance and permission slips. A large topic circu-lating about the ski club this year is the new manda-tory helmet rule. Although

many people in the ski club wear helmets on a weekly basis, there are also many that don’t. Most of those people that don't wear the helmets don't own hel-mets which just adds more to the total cost of ski club. As in-convenient as this may seem, it

is there with the skiers safety in mind.

Movie Reviews By Michael Baracchi

Burlesque In the 2010 film Burlesque,

directed by Steven Antin, a

small-town, country girl,

Ali, who is played by Chris-

tina Aguilera, ventures to

Los Angeles and encounters

a night club called Bur-

lesque, that is ran by a for-

mer dancer, Tess, played by

phere and performances;

she needed to work there.

As she starts off as a wait-

ress, Ali finds her dancing

the moves to herself, and

ends up memorizing every

single step to each perform-

With perseverance and attitude, she gains an audition and blows Tess away. Ali goes from a normal, country-girl from Iowa, to a Los Angeles star in matters of weeks. Burlesque screams night-time liveliness and Broadway in every scene. Burlesque was a Golden Globe nominee and was nominated for a “Best F u t u r e F e a t u r e ” NewNowNext Award from MTV Networks’ Logo channel. This movie really gives a good idea of what can happen if one follows their

dreams.

In the psychologi-

cally thrilling movie, Black

stars as Nina Seyers, a

young dancer with dreams

of fame, but she emotion-

Black Swan circulates

around the mind and emo-

tions of young Nina Seyers.

Her dream of dancing the

Swan Queen comes true, but her

problem is metamorphosing from

the White Swan to the Black

Nina tries, the more she begins to crack under the pressure and stress.

What Thomas is trying

to bring out of Nina is psycho-

logically killing her. As she

reverts back to her old skin-

picking and back-scratching

habits, she begins to halluci-

nate, thinking her rival, Mila

to get Nina’s leading role.

Black Swan has won the 2010

And The Golden Globe Goes To...By Halie Boucher

One of the most talked about award shows, The Hollywood Foreign Press Associations Golden Globes Award, had their 68th annual show hosted by Comedian and Actor Ricky Gervais this past weekend on Sunday January 16th. This is where the biggest movies and tele-vision series get recogni-tion for all their hard work. Since The Social Network and cast won four awards for Best Mo-tion, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. The Fighter also won Best

Performance by an Actress In a Supporting Role and Best Performance by an Actor In a Supporting Role. Boardwalk Empire won two awards for Best Television Series and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series with only their first season. Glee had also won awards for Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical), Best Supporting Actress in A Series, and then Chris Colfer who plays Kurt Hummel in Glee won Best Supporting Actor in a Series was just as shocked as anyone else when he won his award that when he got up on stage he had no idea what to say.

Not only are the awards a big part of the night, but the wardrobe is almost just as big as that. Ce-lebrities come down the red carpet with outfits and dia-monds worth more than you can imagine. As the celebri-ties are walking down the red carpet there are already peo-ple who are depicting who wore it best and who didn’t. Another big award show that is coming up soon is the Grammys which is February 13th at 8 ET/PT don't miss it!

Britney Spears

Britney Spears has recently come out with a new song called "Don't Hold It Against Me." This track was released before it was supposed to. With this new song, she has broken the record for most pre-downloaded songs ever. This track will be on her new album, which still has no name yet, in March. People have taken a poll and 86% of the voters said that they loved it. This song has a similar sound than to her last album, so if you like her last album, check this song out.

Justin Bieber “My Worlds Acoustic”

Justin Beiber’s album came out as one of the last album releases of 2010. This album shows his hit songs, like “Baby” and “One Time,” along with many more, but in acoustic version. With this album, it shows how much talent he has from both singing and playing the guitar. I t h a s come to show that this 16 year old has come a long way from singing on

YouTube. Now he is an international star. His fans are more of the teen/younger kids today. It is even said that he is get-ting the same fans as Mi-chael Jackson did when he died. With all the suc-cess he is getting, he even gets to be making a musi-cal appearance on Satur-day Night Live in April of last year.

iPhone 4: “Hello, Verizon!” By Jessie Tetreault

There have been many rumors about when the iPhone 4 will be coming to Verizon. The truth is that the iPhone will be available from Verizon on Febru-ary 10, 2011. Verizon cus-tomer, Halie Boucher, says, “I don’t care how much the iPhone is, I’m buying it.” It’s been said that it is going to have just about the same plan as any smartphone from Verizon, unlimited data and internet. Also, it will be on Verizon’s 4G network, and if

you’re already a Verizon cus-tomer you can have the chance to get the iPhone ear-lier than the release date online. “I think that the iPhone is awesome has so many features, and I would love to get one. It sucks that they are expensive though, and I think the iPhone was cooler before all these other internet phones came out,” says junior, Angie Falkowski about the iPhone coming to her network, Verizon. On January 16th, Veri-zon canceled their two year contract to receive an upgrade

for your phone. This means that new custom-ers won’t have the chance to upgrade their phone from now on, and current customers’ next upgrade will be their last one. If there is no upgrade, Veri-zon customers will be having to pay full price for any phone that they may want to get later on. Well, loyal Apple fans will do just about any-thing for an iPhone, right?

Tips To Land That Job By Michelle Mullen & Samantha Bosco

Nowadays a

b i g thing on

most teens’ minds

i s finding a

job. We know that it can

feel like you’re never going

to find one but here are

some tips to help you make

the impression needed to

land that job.

First put together a

simple, easy to read, re-

sume. It doesn’t need to be

incredibly long or detailed.

Make sure that you

are dressed appropriately.

Ask your parents

for advice because after

all they have gone

through this process

themselves once.

Have good posture

and be respectful, a little

manners can go a long

way.

Remember t o

seem confident but not

too cocky.

After about a

week or so without an

answer don’t be afraid to

call to follow up on how the

selection process is going.

This is important because it

shows that you care about

the getting the job.

Be prepared for a

“no” because you still might

not get the job.

If you don’t, don’t

give up just keep trying and

eventually your hard work

and dedication will pay off.

Boys Basketball on a Winning Streak By Jamie Green

The Enfield Raiders boys basketball team is on a current winning streak. They have won 7 of their 8 games, and more games ahead. The team has played against Bolton, Ellington, Avon, Coginchaug Regional, Stafford, Sports and Medical Science Academy (Hartford CT), East Granby and a dis-appointing loss to Plainville. The team has had a very strong season so far, and many plan to see the season continue being strong.

Fall All-Conference Athletes By Rachel Boulette

In the North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC), Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer had the fol-lowing athletes selected to be part of the All-Conference team: Kaylee Polmatier, Patience Bearse, Alexa Grigely, Robert Strevel, and Mike Desroches. The football team had quite a few ath-letes as well. Nick Van Oudenhove, Andrew Buanno, Jack Reed, Jon Landry, and Devin Ryan made All-Conference. For Field Hockey, Taylor DeMur was the only girl who made All-Conference. To be an All-Conference athlete, you have to demonstrate hard work on the field and stand out among the 13 or so teams in the NCCC. Congratulations to all the athletes! Continue all your hard work.

Hockey Plays Rentschler Field By Brenton Buchholz

The Enfield High Hockey team has reached the final stretch to the out-door game at Rentschler Field. The game is part of the anticipated 10-Day Whalerfest. A wide range of teams will play in this event. Teams from the mi-nor league professional teams to town league games will be held on the ice at Rentschler. Our team will play against the Northwest Catholic Indians. Last year the Indians beat the Raiders with less than thirty sec-onds left. The Raider team is looking for revenge. Other games are being played on the ice as well. A top selling game will be the Whaler Legends vs. Bruin Legends. This will be played by retired professional players from both the Whalers and the

Bruins. Another game being played features the Hanson brothers from the movie “Slap Shot.” The UConn women and men’s teams are also playing on the ice. Also, other famous hockey legends from other teams are “coming out of retire-ment” for the remake of the 1986 All Star game that was held in Hartford. The person making the ice for these events is the professional that made the ice for the first NHL Winter Classic, which was played in Buffalo between the Pitts-burgh Penguins and the Buf-falo Sabres. At first, the ice for these events was placed in the center of Rentschler Field, but has been moved more to the North end of the field. “In this new configu-ration everyone gets a better

view of the action,” states Howard Baldwin, the presi-dent of the Whaler Founda-tion. Struggling this sea-son, this game could create a rebound for the Raiders and help them make states. This game will be very good for our team, but not as good for fans. The tickets are now selling for 30 dollars. “I’m not willing to spend that much money when I can wait and find out what happened later. Any-way, the next day [they’re] playing Fermi,” says Stu-dent Matt Nicewicz. Still, this is a very cool thing for the Raiders to be a part of, so try to come up with the money and come support your Raider Hockey team!

February Vacation By Zack Peruta

February is almost here, and you know what that means? No February Va-cation! Well, maybe a day off at most, but it’s safe to say no February Vacation. The fact that the Board of Ed. voted to take it out three years ago still grinds my gears. February Vacation was originally intended to let students go be sick at home instead of at school to help prevent the spread of germs to help cut down on the number of sick days. But supposedly our town is so healthy that we don’t even need it because we just wear face masks, use plastic gloves, wash our hands every ten seconds, and walk around in big plas-tic bubbles all day. I hope you realize I

am joking, and if this sounds exactly like your life, I would recommend losing the bubble for a start. Being serious now, we need to bring back February Vacation. For starters, it helps with the number of sick students by giving them some time to relax and let it pass. Sec-ond, it is, or was, the only vacation that teach-ers and faculty could book a trip or vacation. Lastly, we just like time away from school because lets face it. We all love staying home. Except for that really small minority of stu-dents who love coming to school, but who am I to judge those crazy people. All in all, we really should bring back February Vacation before this year’s seniors miss it, because after that, we [seniors] just won’t care about it anymore.

Bob Wayne: The Next Big Thing By Cameron Sutphin

Have you even heard of Bob Wayne? Probably not. That is because he was an un-derground country music singer. He has now signed with Centenary Media Records and has an album, The Outlaw Carnie, that will be released on January 25. The album was originally scheduled to be re-leased in October, but the date was pushed back due to diffi-culties with the bar code, and Century Media not being able to promote the album as heav-ily at the time. This is his fourth al-bum, but it is his first studio

quality album released on a major record label. The other three albums he re-leased were all self-released, recorded behind bars, and burned in his camper. This album con-tains many of the songs from his previous albums and a few new songs. This is going to be the album of the year, Bob Wayne is the Kris Kristof-ferson of this generation. For those of you who do not know who Kris Kristof-ferson is, he is a very fa-mous songwriter and artist

who wrote many hit songs for other artists, and had a hit himself “Why Me Lord.” Bob Wayne will be the next biggest coun-try music singer, if not the next biggest artist. You are going to want to buy this album.
