To inspire Canadian women and girls to courageously lead change that
contributes to a society without boundaries for women, in the spirit of the Famous Five.
Integrity, Courage, Initiative, Determination, and Equality form the basis of all we do.
Dear Friends & Supporters,
I am pleased to introduce our Annual Report for the 2014
fiscal year. The past 12 months were exciting for the Foundation, as we worked hard to build on the success of our long-standing programs while also introducing some
exciting new initiatives. Our “85th” Persons’ Day celebrations held on October 18th
was the pinnacle event of a year that included a number of other highlights such as the McCaig Family as lead match
donors to our annual giving campaign, a record year for submissions to our Youth Awards program, the launch of our The Famous 5 Gala (in partnership with Heritage Park &
ACTA), and the start of our newest girl engagement partnership with Young Women of Power.
The Famous 5 Foundation is extremely grateful to its past and present Board and Committee volunteers for their many hours spent building and delivering our
programs. As special thank you to Donna Leonard Robb, who we rely on daily to keep things going, for her continued leadership and passion for the organization. We could not accomplish our work without the generous support of our volunteers,
donors, Sponsors, and staff.
Our strategic pillars keep us focused on delivering innovative programming, building a reputable brand, and investing in scalable growth. In addition to continuing to offer our core programs, our plans for 2015 include some exciting evolutionary
changes for the Foundation as we invest in a rebranding effort that will enable us to enhance our relevance to Canadians, especially women & girls. We also remain focused securing sustainable funding for the organization and on building our
resources (volunteer & staff) to best support our continued growth and success.
We approach the work we do with the same courage and determination of the Famous Five in the hopes of paving the path of success, opportunity and equality for the future generations of women. In a memorable discussion I had with one of our
funders, our organization was described as one that “punches bigger than its weight”. I couldn’t agree more.
I look forward to more exciting activities for 2015.
Carolyn Robertson, Board Chair
The event was in partnership with
Nicolle Stein from Girlpower and the Famous 5 Foundation hosted by
Lisa Congo and the Bowness Boys and Girls Club.
This was a fun and interactive workshop where 32 girls from grades three to six developed
principles of friendship and built relationships.
Shauna Frederick and Donna Leonard
Robb shared age appropriate stories about the Famous Five and spoke about the
significance of the Pink Tea. The girls were taught the Famous 5 motto and the fine art of drinking from a china tea cup – pinkies
up ladies! The girls were thrilled when they were given the china tea cups to take home
in a bright pink bag.
Girls were encouraged to learn how to
be a good friend while staying true to themselves through engaging in
activities where they worked in pairs on exercises to enhance skills. The younger girls received a stuffed animal
as a way to get comfortable and all were involved with making fascinators as a team building exercise.
The Remarkable Leaders’ Workshop (RLW) delivers training and development sessions
that address current challenges and topics relevant to a business woman’s leadership journey. It brings business women the opportunity to build their leadership skills and
learn from other female leaders in the community. In 2014, facilitators from Brave Communications included Ken Cameron, a playwright, theatre director, leadership development coach and Jane MacFarlane, and a presentation skills coach. They
provided concepts and practice exercises to help participants learn how to lead with inspiration, develop messages that inspire, and use voice and breath techniques to communicate with influence by applying the “Hero’s Journey” story format for powerful
presentations and to develop heroes on a team.
