Performance NotesThis setting of Psalm 27 is lyrical, with broad legato phrases and somewhat melancholyharmonization. The bass line is as important as the melody, as it provides the tension andcalm that creates musical interest.

The tempo should be moderate so as not to drag and not to race through the refrains. Theverses should pick up a bit, especially the third SATB verse which also builds in intensity. Aninstrumental version of the refrain follows this third verse and provides a breather before thebroad and very strong last refrain. Or, especially if a cantor sings all the verses, this lastrefrain could be the quietest of all. Use your imagination!

Though piano is the primary instrument here, guitar, bass, and organ are pleasant additions.Whatever instruments and figurations are used, the accompaniment must provide thenecessary sense of movement. Besides its use as a psalm response, To Dwell In Your House isan effective communion song and can be used appropriately throughout the liturgical year.
