As was mentioned by Julian Smith at our last meeting, we were all saddened to here
of the tragic death of five Polio Vaccinators in Pakistan. Jane has asked me to place
the following letter in the bulletin.
Dear Jane,
Late last night we received the heart-breaking news that five polio vaccinators had been killed in Karachi,
Pakistan.
Our sympathy goes out to the victim’s families today, but also to the thousands of children who will now miss out on
some of the most basic of health services.
The vaccinators, all female, had been working to protect children against polio as part of a three-day vaccination
round. It follows a similar incident on Monday, in which a male polio vaccinator, also in Karachi, was killed.
These vaccinators were some of the true heroes of polio eradication.
We are all in awe of the dedication and bravery of those who risk their own lives to protect children against this
devastating disease. The best way to honour their sacrifice is to ensure that all Pakistani children receive basic health
services and that polio is finally eradicated from their country, once and for all.
Show your support by sharing this image on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Google+.
WHO, UNICEF and the other partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are committed to supporting the
Government of Pakistan and the Pakistani people in their efforts to rid their country of polio - and so are we! This
tragedy will not stop eradication efforts and only heightens our resolve to deliver a polio-free Pakistan.
Thank you for standing shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistani people in their commitment to free their country from
this disease,
Michael, Lauren, d'Arcy and the rest of The End of Polio team at the Global Poverty Project

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community. Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring. The beginning of a new year is a good opportunity to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year.
Penman's Post
What a great way to finish off the year with the induction of 3 new members. Welcome to Debbie, Di and Alan into
our Club and I am sure you will find some wonderful friends and enjoy the activities of the Club, all while making a
difference in your community. Seven new members this first 6 months gives the Club a great injection of new blood,
although the ratio is becoming disturbing. Perhaps an issue for the Minister for Women’s Affairs, although while he
continues to infatuate over cow bells, he possibly has broader issues on his mind!!
It was fitting also that we ended the year with a wonderful distribution to both Ron Carr from Youth InSearch and Rod
Thompson representing the Black Dog Institute. The genuine appreciation shown by both Ron and Rod is extremely
gratifying and you know that the funds have gone to very worthwhile projects.
A lot of frivolity flew around the room over the Santa Crawl this morning and well done to all members who
contributed to make the night such a success for Ronald MacDonald House. Final figures are not available as yet, but it
should be around $9,000 raised with 80% directed straight to RMH. The Board has agreed to contribute a further
$1,000 which will give our Club sponsorship rights with RMH. Our emblem will be on the RMH “Tree of Life”
plague; our logo will be on event banners well as the recognition monitor in the dining area of RMC; and we will
receive 10 event tickets to raffle to the Country Music concert at Kitty Crawford Estate on January 19. Most
importantly of course, we will be assisting such a wonderful organization that makes a big difference to so many
children and families using the House.
I cannot believe that 6 months of my year has passed by already and they say the best is yet to come!! Thanks to all
members for making it fun for the President and contributing in all sorts of ways to make it a very special club. January
is a busy month for us again with Country Music Cavalcade, longest line dancing and the RMH concert at Kitty
Crawford. We return back to our first meeting on January 9, which will be a BBQ in Anzac Park.
Enjoy the break with family and friends and take a few minutes to remember the true meaning of Christmas!!
That’s all folks….Happy Xmas. ….PP

This Day in History
Australian Explorers
Tuesday, January 9, 1816. : Explorer James Kelly lands at Port Dalrymple, Tasmania, where he is arrested as a
bushranger.
Captain James Kelly was born in Parramatta, New South Wales, in 1791. As a young man, he was inducted into the trades of
sealer and sandalwood trader. At the age of 21, Kelly was enlisted to command the whaling fleet of Thomas William Birch of Hobart Town. In 1815, Kelly embarked on a journey to circumnavigate Tasmania in a whaleboat, with the view to exploring the
commercial potential along the Tasmanian coast.
During Kelly's first month spent exploring around Tasmania, he discovered a number of useful inlets and rivers. On 9 January 1816, Kelly and his men sailed into Port Dalrymple where they were initially believed to be bushrangers, and arrested accordingly.
The mistake was soon rectified, the men's food supplies were replenished, and they were given fresh clothing. The party continued south down the eastern coast, arriving in Hobart Town on 30 January 1816.
World History
Wednesday, January 9, 1861. : Mississippi becomes the second US state to secede from the Union,
precipitating the American Civil War.
The first African slaves arrived in north America in 1526, and though the practice of slavery took many years to become popular, it thrived under British colonialism. On 1 January 1808 American Congress voted to ban further importation of slaves, but children of slaves automatically became slaves themselves. There was no legislation
against the internal US slave trade, or against the involvement in the international slave trade and the outfitting of ships for that trade by US citizens.
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, was not in favour of abolition of slavery, but he opposed its expansion into new territories and states in the American West. It was this issue that led to the secession of the
southern states to form the Confederate States of America, and ultimately also led to the Civil War. On 20 December 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede. The second state to secede was Mississippi, on 9 January 1861. Within a few weeks, five other states also seceded, collectively forming the Confederate States of
America. When the Civil War erupted, another four states joined the Confederacy.
Tuesday, January 9, 2001. : A man being strangled by a python frees himself by biting the snake on the neck.
On 9 January 2001, Johannesburg newspaper "The Star" reported that a man had won his freedom from a fierce constricting rock python by biting it on the neck. 57 year old council worker Lucas Sibanda had been walking home along a narrow, tree-lined
pathway when the python began heading for him. Sibanda froze in fear, allowing the snake to curl around him and begin constricting in its attempts to suffocate the victim. Realising there was nothing he could do, as the snake's head reached his own,
Sibanda bit it sharply on its neck, kicking and punching until the snake loosened itself. He then grabbed a stick to finish off the snake, taking it home as a trophy to show his family.

Laugh out loud
MY DARLING HUSBAND
To my darling husband,
Before you return from your overseas trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pickup
truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too
much about me. I was coming home from Sylvia Park, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on
the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pickup fortunately came to a halt when it
bumped into your car. I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know
how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart. I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my
arms again.
Your loving wife. XX
P.S. Your girlfriend called.
SERIOUSLY, WOULD YOU QUIT DRINKING IF YOU SAW THIS?

BLONDE WALKS INTO A BANK
A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for
two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so
the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the
bank, she has the title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's
president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000
loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.
Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says,
"Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little
puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why
would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blond replies......................"Where else in New York City can I park my car
for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"
DEEP THOUGHTS BY MEN WHILE FISHING
Two men are out fishing at their favourite fishing spot, just fishing quietly and drinking beer.
Almost silently, so as not to scare the fish, Bob says, "I think I'm going to divorce my wife. She hasn't spoken to me in
over 2 months."
Earl continues slowly sipping his beer, then thoughtfully says,
"You better think it over mate - women like that are hard to find."

Cardiologist's Funeral
A very prestigious cardiologist died, and was given a very elaborate funeral by the hospital he worked for most of
his life...
A huge heart... covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service as all the doctors from the hospital
sat in awe.
Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket was rolled inside the heart then closed, sealing the doctor
in the beautiful heart forever.
At that point, one of the mourners burst into laughter.
When all eyes stared at him, he said, 'I am so sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral... I'm a gynaecologist.'
Just about then, the proctologist fainted.
"A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, 'I know what the Bible means!' His father smiled and replied, 'What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means? The son replied, 'I do know!' 'Okay,' said his father. 'What does the Bible mean?' 'That's easy, Daddy...' the young boy replied excitedly,' It stands for Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.' Mr Honda, of the Honda Motorcycle Corporation, died and went to heaven for judgement.
At the gates, St. Peter told Mr Honda, "since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed
the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."
Mr Honda thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God. I have a question for Him.
St. Peter took Mr Honda to the Throne Room and introduced him to God.
He then asked God, "Aren't you the inventor of women?"
God Said, "Ah, yes. Indeed I am".
"Well," said Mr Honda, "Professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your design;
1- There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
2- It chatters constantly at high speeds.
3- Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
4- The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust.
5- Plus the monthly down time and aggravation are outrageous, and I don't even want to start talking about the
maintenance costs.
"Hum, you do raise some good points “replied God, "Let’s have a wee
look."
God went to his Celestial super computer, typed in a few things and waited for the results. After a moment God
said, "Well, it may be true that my invention seems to be flawed, but according to these numbers, more men are
riding my invention than yours.
