November deadly for pedestriansDear Editor,Shocking new analysis has discovered that pedestrian casualties on British roads peak in November eachyear. The research* compared four years of records and found an increase of 42 per cent in seriouspedestrian casualties in November compared to August.

Any death on the road is one too many. Here at Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking,we are very disturbed at the dramatic rise.

The winter months bring challenges to road users, including darker evenings and bad weather. We needto ensure we are working to keep people safe on our streets. Crossings, 20mph and pedestrian zones areall ways of increasing safety and need to be taken seriously to ensure that the number of pedestriancasualties does not continue to rise.

We must prioritise the safety of walkers to make sure everybody feels that they can get out and enjoytheir streets and experience the health, social and environmental benefits that walking brings. Thegovernment must invest in walking to help save precious lives.

Surrey’s heathlandlandscape restoredas final powerpylon comes downThe last of the unsightly metal power pylons, which have towered over Thursley NationalNature Reserve (NNR) since the 1960’s, hasbeen removed – marking the end of a two year-long project involving Natural England, Sur-rey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty(AONB) and Southern Electric Power Distri-bution (SEPD), to restore the stunning scenicviews across this Surrey reserve.

Andy Smith, Area Manager for NaturalEngland in the Thames Valley said: “This is agreat example of partnership working whichhas led to a winning solution for people whoenjoy experiencing Thursley’s unique beautyand for the wildlife that live there.”

Work to dismantle 11 pylons carrying thirtythree thousand volt overhead power lines, plus 22 wooden electricity poles carryingeleven thousand volts across the NNR, beganin 2013. More than three kilometres of over-head power lines have now been replaced byunderground circuits, restoring and enhanc-ing Surrey’s rare, historic heathland land-scape and re-creating a sense of partial wilder-ness rarely found in South East England.

Contractors worked closely with NaturalEngland to protect the site’s rare and variedhabitats and ensure that the operations avoidedareas used by rare nesting birds, such aswoodlark and Dartford warblers. The pylonswere finally removed this autumn when thenesting season was over.

James Giles, Natural England ReserveManager at Thursley NNR, said: “Keepingthe power lines which were formerly visibleacross the reserve out of sight hugely en-hances one of the most beautiful and diverselandscapes in Surrey. It is the culmination ofa 10 year vision - something truly remark-able.”

Rob Fairbanks, Director of Surrey HillsAONB said: “Thursley is already an incred-ibly special site, but this project has allowed usto revitalise the reserve by restoring the senseof wilderness and the traditional heathlandlandscape once so familiar in the Surrey Hills.”

Greg Moore, Project Planner with South-ern Electric Power Distribution, said: “Thiswas one of the most complex and challengingundergrounding projects we had ever under-taken. We have an ongoing programme whereour customers can nominate officially desig-nated areas of natural beauty which couldbenefit from overhead lines being moved un-derground. Hopefully the Thursley projectwill serve as an example of what can be donewith the cooperation of everyone involved.

James added: “Seeing this project com-pleted is hugely rewarding for everyone who’sbeen involved, including our network of Natu-ral England volunteers who were able to assistin the removal of the final pylon - a fittingepitaph to the project!”

Technology and social mediabigger threats than drink-drivingMotorists are now moreworried about the dan-gers of distraction posedby technology and so-cial media than drink-driving, according to theInstitute of AdvancedMotorist’s (IAM) firstmajor survey into safetyculture.

The Safety CultureIndex report waslaunched today by theIAM, and is a study ofmore than 2,000 UKmotorists’ attitudes todriving safety andbehaviour on our roads.

This report will forma definitive baseline totrack changes over time, providing the opportu-nity to examine how at-titudes change over theyears.

The report has foundthat while technologywill form a fundamen-tal part of improvingroad safety, it also posessome risks, in particulardriver distraction – 77%of people say it is now abigger problem thanthree years ago. This

compares to just 23% ofpeople feeling drinkdriving is a bigger threatthan three years ago.

Those surveyed saidtext messaging and so-cial media are the twobiggest factors threaten-ing their personal safety, with 93% and 92% re-spectively claimingthese to be a ‘very orsomewhat serious’threat.

The next two factorsthey say are threats totheir personal safety aredrink and drug driving,at 90% and 89% respec-tively.

And while mostpeople feel talking on ahand-held mobile phoneis unacceptable in theirown locality (just 15%said they found it ac-ceptable), some 64% saytalking on a hands-freemobile phone is accept-able.

Motorists are alsomuch more worriedabout speeding in resi-dential streets than theyare about speeding on

motorways - 86% be-lieving this to be a veryor somewhat seriousthreat; 24% higher thanmotorways.

This is borne out bythe fact 61% feel it’sacceptable to drive10mph over the speedlimit on the motorway, just 27% feel it’s accept-able to drive 5mph overthe limit on a residentialstreet.

The IAM believesthe report highlights thekey areas of road safetyand police enforcementpriority that will com-mand the highest levelsof public support.

IAM President and1992 Formula 1 WorldChampion NigelMansell CBE said: “Thegood news is that thevast majority of driversdo value safety and theywant to feel even saferon the road in the future.

“They take speedingand drink-driving veryseriously and are happyto support even stron-ger legislation even if it

may stop them doingthings they admit to do-ing themselves. We dofeel we can offer realworld solutions to thosedrivers who throughover, or under, confi-dence feel stressed onour busy roads.”

Sarah Sillars, IAMchief executive officer, said: “This report is acrucial barometer ofwhat drivers are reallythinking. It is all aboutseeing what issues andfactors the public see asimportant in their lives, and using that informa-tion to influence theirbehaviour.

“Understanding theissues drivers see asimportant when it comesto road safety is essen-tial for establishing howbest to communicatewith them and so in turnto achieve behaviourchange, on both a localand national level.

“It is up to all of usnow, armed with thisinformation, to do some-thing about it.”

IAM responds todecrease inroad casualtiesNeil Greig, IAM director of policy and re-search said: “It is indeed good news to see thatin spite of an increase in volume of traffic by2.3 per cent that the numbers of casualties hasfallen by 7 per cent. However, fatal accidentson non-built up roads has increased by 7 percent.

“Highways England has published a visionfor zero deaths on trunk roads and we believethis commitment should be adopted by thegovernment for the whole country. TheDVSA has stated a desire to encourage life-long learning in driver and rider trainingand we firmly believe that with the rightframework in place, which recognises theissues faced by road users of different ages, this approach will form a vital part of ensur-ing that fewer lives are needlessly lost on UKroads.”

Key findings from the report:• A total of 22,830 people were killed or

seriously injured (KSI casualties) in the yearending June 2015, down by 7 per cent fromthe previous year.

• There were 180,500 casualties of allseverities in the year ending June 2015, downby 7 per cent from the previous year.

• Motor traffic levels rose by 2.3 per centcompared with the year ending June 2014.

• Child KSIs (killed or seriously injured)decreased by 8 per cent to 530 in Q2 2015.This is the lowest quarter 2 on record.

S P O R TBAA back fromthe brink….

BAA Heathrow (Sun-day) FC 3rds knewthey were in for a toughgame when they tookon top of the tableBurnham Garibaldi.

It looked positivethough as BAA startedstrongly and playedsome good football asplayers looked for animproved perfor-mance after lastweek’s 3-1 defeat inthe County Cup.BAA’s first realchance fell to rightback Michael Whitewhose blistering shotwas headed off the lineby a defender afterbeating the goal-keeper. Despite hav-ing the majority ofpossession BAA failedto convert it into manyshots on target andwere stunned whenBurnham took the leadon a counter attack. The Burnham strikerdid well as he receivedthe ball on the edge ofthe area and workedhis way into the boxbefore making an op-portunity for himselfand blasted the ballpast Jason Ravenhillin the BAA goal. BAApicked themselves upand carried on and stillhaving more of the ballbut were stunned againas they went 2-0 downafter a breakaway goalby Burnham.Burnham’s attackerspulled the BAA de-fence apart and a smartpull back for an un-marked player tosmash the ball in anempty net gave them atwo goal advantage.

BAA regrouped at halftime and a stern talkfrom the managerseemed to have the de-sired effect. The intro-duction of GaryBeckey at left back al-lowed Jordan Phillipsto push forward whichgave BAA an addedcreative outlet in theirattacks. BAA pulled agoal back throughConnor Sellars whosecurling shot from 25yards looped over thekeeper, it was a stun-ning goal created bythe player himself.Burnham looked to tryand hold on to theirlead as BAA hit themwith wave after waveof attacks. An inspir-ing run from centreback Lee Hunt sawBAA all level though.Hunt intercepted theball on the edge of hisown area and went ona run playing one two’suntil he found himselfin the opponents box,as the goalkeeper cameout he played the ballacross for JordanPhillips to blast intothe goal for 2-2. BAAlooked for a winnerand were frustrated asthe Burnham goal-keeper made two finesaves to deny AlanHathaway but 10minsfrom time captain TroyBurrows rose highestto head in a JordanPhillips corner givingthe goalkeeper nochance. To secure thewin BAA changed for-mation with GaryChandler coming intoa five man midfieldalongside Rob Galway

Troy Burrows (right) scorer of the winning goal

and Chris Geal and thismade sure BAA wouldover run their oppo-nents in the middle andstop any possible at-tacks being created.BAA picked up thewin and the points withtheir best display of theseason. There wasgreat performancesfrom Jordan Phillipsand Michael White onthe day but it was LeeHunt who picked upthe man of the match.

Winning run haltedby high-riding Hull

Brentford 0 Hull City 2Brentford were unableto turn a fine first halfperformance in to a fifthstraight win as they werebeaten by Hull City atGriffin Park on Tues-day, November 3.

The Humberside leftWest Middlesex withthree points and a 2-0win thanks to a pair ofsecond half goals. Theydeserved the win on thebasis of their second halfperformance but theywere made to work forit.

Brentford pushedHull back for long stagesof the first half and hadthe chances to go in atthe break in front. ButHull held firm in de-fence and then wentthrough the gears in thesecond half. They gotstronger as the gamewore on and goals fromAndrew Robertson andSam Clucas in the finalquarter wrapped up thepoints.

The game was openfrom the start and bothteams could have beenahead inside the first fiveminutes.

Brentford’s chancefell to Marco Djuricin, who brought a good saveout of Allan McGregorwith a firm shot afterexchanging passes withLasse Vibe. At the otherend, David Button eas-ily saved a header fromClucas inside the first20 seconds but the visi-tors had a better chance

soon after. Clucas gotaway on the left afterpicking up a long balland drilled in a low crossthat was just too farahead of AbelHernández.

Both teams came into the game full of con-fidence. Hull were un-beaten in ten in all com-petitions and Brentfordhad won four on thebounce. The visitorsfielded two strikers andwere happy to play witha man less in the centreof midfield. This al-lowed The Bees to havecontrol of this area butHull used their width togood effect. Theylooked to get Clucas andAhmed Elmohamady onthe ball with Robertsonand Moses Odubajo pro-viding support from fullback.

Hull’s midfield wereworking hard to preventBrentford making themost of their extra manin the centre of the park, but when The Bees hadpossession in that area, they created chances.John Swift set upDjuricin for a shot thatMcGregor saved wellwith his legs and RyanWoods fired wide aftera fine move through theright channel from backto front. McGregor alsosaved a dipping Swiftfree kick from 25 yardsand Vibe fired a snapshot over the bar.

Hull were happy to

let Brentford have theball at the back butpressed when it wasmoved forward and theBees had to be patient attimes. The home sidewere dominating pos-session but Hull wereincisive when they hadthe ball, looking to getforward quickly butwith sharp, passing foot-ball rather than longballs. Their openings inthe first half were halfchances at best, how-ever, as Brentford weredefending well.

Chuba Akpom saw ashot blocked for the visi-tors and a fierce shotfrom David Meyler wasdeflected wide.Hernández had a chancewith a free kick 20 yardsfrom goal but dragged itwide of Button’s lefthand post. The strikeralso fired over after cut-ting inside from the left.

McGregor was thebusier goalkeeper andhe saved well from Vibelow down as half timeapproached but neitherteam could find a break-through in the first pe-riod.

Hull started the sec-ond half brighter. Theyseemed slightly quickerto the ball and moved itsharply, particularly onthe right side.

Jake Livermore sawa shot well blocked andRobertson fired overfrom 12 yards after across had fallen to him.

James Tarkowski madea fine block from aMeyler shot and thendenied Hernández witha tackle after Clucas andRobertson had com-bined on the left. Meylerhad a golden chance butcould only divert awicked Robertson crossover the bar from eightyards before Buttonmade a low save froman Odubajo shot.

The goal the visitorshad been threateningsince the start of the sec-ond period came mid-way through the half.Clucas picked up theball on the left andthreaded a pass forRobertson to run on toand smash past Buttonfrom eight yards.

Brentford tried to hitback quickly and couldhave been level withinfive minutes. The impe-rious Tarkowski strodeout from the back andweaved his way for-ward, leaving defendersin his wake; he slippedthe ball off to KonstantinKerschbaumer and theshot bent away to hit thepost with McGregorbeaten. Woods thenfired the loose ball wide.A Tarkowski shot wasblocked after a free kickwas awarded for a backpass and Sergi Canóssaw a volley blockedwhen he met a JakeBidwell cross.

But Hull weatheredBrentford’s storm, in-

troduced MohamedDiamé to play up frontand looked to make thegame safe. Diamé setup Livermore, who sawa shot blocked and thenfired well over after cut-ting inside.

Button deniedLivermore soon afterbut Hull got their sec-ond goal with four min-utes remaining.Brentford failed to cleara corner and HarryMaguire got off a shotthat Button saved wellbut he could only watchas Clucas picked up theloose ball and slottedhome. Djuricin shotwide for The Bees andBidwell forcedMcGregor in to a savebut the home side’s racewas run.

The final momentswere end to end asBrentford pushed for agoal and Hull counter-attacked. But neitherteam could find a waythrough and the visitorsleft with the points.Brentford: Button;Yennaris (Canós 72), Dean,Tarkowski, Bidwell;Diagouraga (Hofmann 80),McCormack; Woods, Vibe(Kerschbaumer 57), Swift;DjuricinHull City: McGregor;Odubajo, Bruce (Maguire20), Dawson, Robertson;Elmohamady; Meyler,Livermore, Clucas;Hernández (Huddlestone81 mins), Akpom (Diamé73).Attendance: 9,221 (943away fans)

BEES END 50 YEARS OF PAINBrentford 1 QPR 0Brentford made it four

wins on the spin as theytriumphed in a televisedWest London derbyagainst local rivalsQueens Park Rangers onFriday evening (Octo-ber 30).

Austrian strikerMarcos Djuricin wrotehis name in to Brentfordhistory with the winninggoal on a memorablenight at Griffin Park. The forward convertedan Alan Judge crossearly in the second halfto settle the match andsend QPR the way ofRotherham United,Wolverhampton Wan-derers and CharltonAthletic - all beaten byLee Carsley’s Brentfordin the last 13 days.

But this one meant alittle bit more. Brentfordhad not beaten QPRsince August 1965 andfor much of the last 50years there have beenapproaching 50 leagueplaces between theteams.

But Djuricin’s goalput Brentford in to the

top ten of the Sky BetChampionship, abovetheir rivals and closingin on the leading teams.

The Bees deserved itoverall. They had a littlebit of luck in the firsthalf with the visitors hit-ting the woodworktwice but dominatedpossession throughout. And they controlled thesecond half, limitingQPR to very few sightsof goal once Djuricinhad broken the dead-lock.

QPR set up to con-tain The Bees. Theyfielded a tight five manmidfield with the threemost advance of thatpack only a few yards infront of defensive pairKarl Henry and DánielT_szér.

With both teamsplaying five in the cen-tre of the park that areawas very congested andthe first 30 minutes waslow on quality. The foot-ball that was played wasplayed by Brentford andthey looked to utilise thein-form Judge to open

the blue and white door. But the Irishman wastightly shackled andonly when he drifted into wide areas, or QPRlet him run off, did heget the possession hewould have liked.

The sights of goal inthe first half hour all fellto Brentford but theywere no more than halfchances. John Swift sawa weak shot saved byRobert Green and AlanMcCormack headed aJake Bidwell cross wide.Toumani Diagouragamiss-hit a volley fromthe edge of the penaltyarea when Green hadflapped at a Judge cor-ner but the QPR goal-keeper did well to save afierce Swift shot later inthe half. Judge also cre-ated an opening for him-self with a nice turn andrun but he dragged hisshot wide.

QPR showed moreof their attacking threattowards the end of theend of the first half. They

spent much of the open-ing exchanges playingthe ball long and seemedto be more worriedabout Brentford thanplaying football.

The game opened upas half time approachedand was a much betterspectacle as a result.Green was well positionto save a curling Judgeshot after good work bySwift as Brentfordlooked to end the halfwith the lead. And itcontinued to be openafter the break.

The Bees could havegone ahead within aminute of the restart butGreen saved well fromDjuricin afterMcCormack had got inbehind.

But the home fansdid not have to wait longto celebrate their goal.It was scored byDjuricin and set up byJudge but owed much tothe work of Diagouragawho played a delightfulpass in to Judge in the

inside left channel; thecross came in andDjuricin got in front ofClint Hill to smash ithome.

Brentford could havegone further ahead whenHarlee Dean headed aJudge corner wide andBidwell then got upfrom the back to nod aMcCormack cross overthe top. Judge tried toadd to his goal tally witha curling free kick butfired it wide of the farpost.

QPR rung thechanges as they lookedto find a way back in tothe game. Top scorerCharlie Austin was in-troduced and they alsohad to make a defensivesubstitution as Hilllimped off. The Beeswere also forced in to achange as Judge had tobe withdrawn, replacedby KonstantinKerschbaumer.

When Brentford gotthe ball in the final stagesthey passed it precisely, looked to create open-ings and ran the clock

down, forcing QPR tochase it.

Philipp Hofmanncould have added a sec-ond after he picked up aclever Kerschbaumerpass but he dragged hisshot wide. That provednot to matter in the endthough as referee SimonHooper, who deservesto be commended for theway he handled a gamethat had the potential tobe fiery, brought pro-ceedings to a close andended 50 years of painfor Brentford fans.Brentford: Button;Yennaris, Dean,Tarkowski, Bidwell;Diagouraga, McCormack(Vibe 82); Woods, Judge(Kerschbaumer 77),Swift; Djuricin (Hofmann89).Queens Park Rangers:Green; Onuoha. Hall, Hill(Perch 74), Konchesky;Henry, T_szér; Phillips.Luongo (Hoilett 66),Chery (sub Austin 63mins); Emmanuel-Tho-masAttendance: 12,037(1,642 away fans).

Ashford Hockey Club reportsAshford Men’s 1st XI faced two tough fixtures against two of their promotionrivals over the past two weekends.

in dangerous areas, which allowed Eastcoteto go into half time 2-1up. Ashford came out ofthe blocks quickly andgot an equaliser straightfrom the restart throughShujah Ur Rehman, andthen retook the leadwhen Rehman roundedthe keeper, to giveAshford a 3-2 lead go-ing in to the last 10 min-utes. Unfortunately,Ashford lost their disci-pline and had a coupleof men sin binned, which allowed Eastcoteto secure a late goal andsalvage a point.

Ashford then were athome to Oxford.Ashford dominated theball and lead at half time, thanks to a Rehmandragflick from a shortcorner. In the secondhalf, Oxford pushed fur-ther up the field, allow-ing Ashford to use thespace in behind themand double their lead, again through Rehmanat a short corner.Ashford once againthrew away their advan-tage, and gifted Oxforda couple of goals, to al-low the home side todraw level with 4 min-utes to go. Knowing itwas a must win game,Ashford managed tofind the extra gears re-quired and secured an-other short corner 1minute from time. Ashe so often does, ShujahUr Rehman stepped up,rounded the first de-fender, before firing theball into the top rightcorner, giving Ashfordall 3 points.

Ashford faceWallingford away nextweek in the league, andalso have a cup tie vsBasingstoke home atShort Lane on Sunday.

~ ~ ~After allowing leagueleaders Eastcote to settle

the quicker, Ashfordbegan to create open-ings through their for-wards, and, after a sus-tained spell of pressure, got their just rewardswhen Tom Pitfieldskinned his marker andsquared the ball acrossgoal where JamieHemphrey was on handto provide the finish.Ashford pressed for-ward looking for moregoals, which left hugespaces in behind themidfield and, after acouple of cheap turn-overs in defence andmidfield, Ashford foundthemselves concedingtwice in quick succes-sion before the break.

Ashford came out ofthe blocks rapidly andforced an early shortcorner. Shujah UrRehman stepped up andunleashed a dragflickhard and in to the bot-tom corner, puttingAshford back on levelterms. Ashford tookcontrol of the game andstarted to dominate pro-ceedings. After nar-rowly missing an oppor-tunity from quick break,Ashford regained thelead when Hemphreyreleased Rehman, whowas one on one with thekeeper, and managed thesqueeze the ball underthe keeper and into thevacant goal.

Ashford were thenreduced to 10 men withten minutes to go andsubject to a number ofcontentious decisions, which led to Ashfordlosing their disciplineand allowing Eastcoteto grab an equaliser inthe last 5 minutes.Ashford keeper AdamSmith made a couple ofcrucial blocks at thedeath to ensure thatAshford left with apoint, with the matchfinishing 3-3.

Firstly, they face topof the league Eastcotewho had won all of theirprevious 4 games.Ashford took the leadmid way through thefirst half through JamieHemphrey, only to sur-render possession twice

Lasse Vibe openedthe scoring after 24minutes but Brentfordwere pegged backbefore half time whenTom Lawrence’scross-turned-shotfound the net at thefar post.

Lee Carsleynamed an unchangedside for the trip North, with Vibe coming into replace Alan Judgeagain and SamSaunders taking hisplace on the bench.

Before kick-off,both sets of playerstook time to acknowl-edge remembranceweekend with awreath laying in thecentre circle. Eachplayer also wore apoppy on their shirtas a mark of respect.

The early stageswere timid from bothsides, with neithermaking anythingclear cut. The Bees

threatened to get inbehind after 10 min-utes, as JamesTarkowski’s cross-field pass found AlanMcCormack on thewing. The 31-year-old cut inside and slidthe ball to Vibe butthe Danish forwardcouldn’t get hold of iton the way into thebox.

Brentford, sport-ing their special edi-tion all-black kit, were forced into anearly change whenMarco Djuricin wasinjured in an aerialchallenge after 23minutes. KonstantinKerschbaumer cameon to push Vibe uptop by himself.

Moments later,Brentford had the ballin the net. A neatback-heel fromMcCormack to JohnSwift allowed theChelsea loanee tothread a perfectthrough ball to Vibe. The Dane turned andstruck the ball, whichlooped in after JasonSteele got a hand to

With half an hourgone, Blackburn hadtheir best chance ofthe half so far. A lowcross from the rightby Lawrence nar-rowly evaded JordanRhodes on the edgeof the six-yard box.

Rovers equalisedsoon after. A quickthrow-in to Lawrenceon the left wing meanthe could cut back andput in a drilled crosswith his right foot. The ball zipped all theway through the box, behind the Brentforddefence, and curled inat the far post.

Lawrence almostadded a second be-fore the break, gettingaway from Bidwell inthe box to shoot.David Button gotdown well to his leftto push the bouncingball against the postand away.

The Bees couldhave retaken the leadtwice as fourth offi-

After half time,Brentford’s first bigchance came from 25yards out, as Swiftstruck a free-kick thatSteele was able tocatch and hold.Blackburn respondedwith one of their ownshortly after asRhodes diverted acorner inches wide ofthe post.

K e r s c h b a u m e rshowed good skill toturn his marker andplay Vibe in behindthe Blue and White’sback four. Vibe ranthe ball further in buthis shot was blockedby Shane Duffy atclose range.

Both teams contin-ued to move the ballaround midfield andpossession becamethe key as time wenton.

With under 20minutes to play,Saunders made hisreturn to the first teamas a replacement forSwift in the line ofattacking midfielders. His pass to Yennarisset things rollingwhen the fullbackthen foundKerschbaumer racingthrough the penaltyarea. The Austrianhad time to pick hisspot but his shot wassaved by Steele.
