,Late word has been received that Congress approved a bill requiring that ' n o FCC AM decision would be final without National Radio Club approval. Unfortunately, President Carter vetoed the bill saying that one N.R.C. in the District of Columbia is enough. We feel it necessary to clarify other important issues. The Domestic Log is NOT for finding household servants, and Terminator Mechanics is NOT the science of figuring when the guy working on your car will pass-on. TM has something to do with radio, we think. I f Ella Fitzgerald married Darth Vadar, she'd become---------Ella Vadar. Rumor h a s it that the AC wall current a t CKSW-570 is 990 cycles per second. Boy, that's what I 'd call "Swift Current"! ! ! ! If you ever get gored by an elephant and can't get the tusks out you have t o go t o Alabama. After all, the tusks are looser in Alabama. The National Radio Club is proud t o announce the winner of a new award. Congratulations to Paul Mount for his "Directions to e Teaneck, New Jersey DX Get-Together". Well done, Paul. +- CPC Test Schedules: - Friday. April 26 WHAS-840 L o u i s v i l l e . W i l l use 50.000 watts and will program ' Swahili music from pre-1927 era. Newscasts will be in Greek with weather forecasts in Serbo-Croatian. Prepaid calls will not be accepted. Veries to: Who R.U. Kidding, C h i e f C u s t o d i a n , WHAS, L o u i s v i l l e . Tuesday, May 11 XERF-1570 (Somewhere i n Texas, we think!) Test will include rock music and news. Sources say they will attempt to locate someone who speaks Spanish to do IDS! Send reports to: Don Juan, C/O Ray's Bar & Grille, 8th & Superior, East Peoria. Ill. (ZIP unknown, but the PO will losemost reports anyway! ) Saturday, May 25 WLS-890 C h i c a g o . W i l l use new format of classical music and opera. Test will run for 17 minutes from 0002 to 0019. We are told this is because CE is afraid of anything starting on the hour--you know how rock stations are (that's news a t 55!) Veries from: Chicago I l l , Chief Engineer. WLS Radio. "TRF" FOR 1 0 KHz READ-OUT

    Gerry Thomas (IRCA) & Char l i e B a r f i e l d (NRC, IRCA)

    Since w r i t i n g t h e a r t i c l e on r e - c a l i b r a t i n g t h e TRF, t h e exper ience of modifying a d d i t i o n a l TRF's, ques t ions from members, and r e c e n t l y d iscovered procedural a l t e r n a t i v e s warrant a b r i e f follow-up of t h e procedure.

    Pen--The o r i g i n a l a r t i c l e was w r i t t e n with utmost frequency r e s o l u t i o n i n - mind. That i s , we f e l t t h a t i f s p l i t frequency r e s o l u t i o n were d e s i r e d , read-out should be l i m i t e d by one ' s a b i l i t y t o e s t ima te phys ica l d i s t a n c e s , n o t by wide, ambiguous frequency marks. To t h i s end, we recommend t h a t a . l m m d r a f t i n g pen be used. Even l e s s c r i t i c a l r e s o l u t i o n ( i . e . domestic DXing) r equ i red a very narrow l i n e width l i k e t h a t obta inable with a d r a f t - i n g pen. Unfor tunata ly , t h e c o s t of t h i s type of pen (about $10) was some- what p r o h i b i t i v e . Since t h e o r i g i n a l a r t i c l e was w r i t t e n we've continued searching f o r a l e s s expensive a l t e r n a t i v e . Happily, F a i r r e c e n t l y began marketing an "-a f i n e " t i p p e d pen ($.69) whlch does produce acceptable r e s u l t s . If used wi th a minimum of p res su re on t h e p o i n t , t h i s pen w i l l pro- duce l i n e s wi th widths i n t h e .3mm-.5mm range, which i s adequate f o r TRF r e - c a l i b r a t i o n . The F l a i r ' s i n k , however, i s n o t permanent ( i . e . it runs when exposed t o mois ture) and t h e l i n e s a r e n o t a s c l e a n l y drawn as with t h e d r a f t i n g pen, but t h e s e drawbacks can be countered. F i r s t of a l l , t o p r o t e c t t h e new s c a l e from mois tu re , apply a t r a n s p a r e n t , dry t r a n s f e r t i n t i n g screen. I d e a l f o r t h i s purpose a r e those made by Zip-a-tone ($1.50/sheet a t a r t , hobby, and d r a f t i n g supply s t o r e s ) . These t i n t s a r e a v a i l a b l e i n dozens of c o l o r s and d e n s i t i e s but we've found t h a t "cool grey" (#2702) and "yellow green" (#2663) a r e among t h o s e most s u i t a b l e f o r d i a l s c a l e a p p l i c a t i o n s . Using a t l n t l n g sc reen a l s o a l lows t h e use of r e a d i l y a v a i l a b l e (even a t most d rugs to res ) white s tock p o s t e r board s i n c e t h e t i n t i n g very e f f e c t i v e l y e l i m i n a t e s g l a r e . Choose a low p o r o s i t y , semi-gloss p o s t e r board ( n o t an a r t mat board) t o reduce t h e f e a t h e r i n g of l i n e s caused by t h e s lair's lower v i s c o s i t y i n k . Using t h e preceding procedure , r e s u l t s w i l l be favorably comparable t o those a t t a i n e d with t h e more expensive d r a f t i n g pen.

    Removing t h e d i a l f a c e plate--On some TRF's t h e f ace p l a t e has been removed wi th simply a f i r m nudge. On o t h e r s it h a s been necessary t o add a measure of g run t ing , swearing, and a t e e t h - g r i t t i n g committment n o t t o be out-done by a p i ece of p l a s t i c and a g l o b of g lue . Following is t h e d e t a i l e d pro- cedure we've found t o be most e f f e c t i v e i n removing t h e f a c e p l a t e1

    Lay t h e f r o n t of t h e TRF on a book o r t a b l e t o p such t h a t t h e tuning knob overhangs t h e surface and t h e f a c e p l a t e frame is f l u s h a g a i n s t t h e sur- f ace . With an unsharpened p e n c i l , t h e b lun t end of which has been wrapped wi th a handkerchief, a f i rm downward push t o t h e f a c e p l a t e wi th t h e e r a s e r end r u p t u r e (on ly ) t h e g lue . I f necessa ry , a f t e r f r e e i n g one end of t h e f a c e p l a t e , t a k e something akin t o a pops ic l e s t i c k and with it wedged under t h e f ace p l a t e , s l i d e it a long t h e edges , r e l e a s i n g t h e remainder of t h e g lue .

    Re-cal ibra t ion-- (A) The " re f ined" r e - c a l i b r a t i o n procedure which involved us ing t h e s tock p o i n t e r a s a s t r a igh t - edge but was un te s t ed a t t h e time t h e o r i g i n a l a r t i c l e was w r i t t e n h a s now been t e s t e d and it works b e a u f i f u l l y (mainta in a cons tan t pen ang le f o r optimum accuracy!). (B) It should go without saying t h a t t h e TRF should warm up f o r 20-30 minutes before r e - c a l i b r a t i n g even though t h e pre- and post-warm-up c a l i b r a t i o n e r r o r i s u s u a l l y very smal l .

    D i a l Pointer--The p a r a l l a x e r r o r t h a t occurs when us ing t h e ba l l - type p o i n t e r can be reduced t o an a b s o l u t e minimum simply by bending t h e b a l l t i p s l i g h t l y outward with wire c u t t e r s ( p l i e r s a r e t o o broad-nosed).

    Face-Plate--To prevent a shadow from being c a s t on t h e d i a l s c a l e by t h e new black border framing t h e s c a l e "window", a l low a 1/8" gap above t h e t o p of t h e s c a l e . I n o the r words, s h i f t t h e 3/4" masking t a p e s l i g h t l y upward from t h e bottom s tock black border before pa in t ing .

    Tweaking--By a l l means, tweak your TRF. While a l l of t h e TRF's we've seen have been i n t h e b a l l park alignment-wise, a l l could be improved by ca re fu l tweaking.

    I n conclus ion, t h e r e - c a l i b r a t i o n procedure i s a c t u a l l y much s impler than i t may seem. (Note, however, t h a t some TRF's a r e e a s i e r t o r e - c a l i -
