Notes:

1. Category I Venting is venting at a non-positive pressure.A furnace vented as Category I is considered a fan-as-sisted appliance and the vent system does not have tobe “gas tight.”

NOTE: Gas furnaces with induced draft blowers drawproducts of combustion through a heat exchanger allowing,in some instances, common venting with natural draftappliances (i.e. water heaters).

All installations must be vented in accordance with NationalFuel Gas Code NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1 - latest edition. InCanada, the furnaces must be vented in accordance withthe National Standard of Canada, CAN/CSA B149.1 andCAN/CSA B149.2 - latest editions and amendments.

NOTE: The vertical height of the Category I venting systemmust be at least as great as the horizontal length of theventing system.

2. Line voltage wiring can enter through the right or left sideof the furnace. Low voltage wiring can enter through theright or left side of furnace.

3. Conversion kits for propane gas and high altitude naturaland propane gas operation are available. See High Alti-tude Derate chart for details.

Accessibility Clearances (Minimum)Unobstructed front clearance of 24" for servicing is recom-mended.

Note: In all cases accessibility clearance shall take prece-dence over clearances from the enclosure where accessibil-ity clearances are greater. All dimensions are given in inches.

General OperationModels covered by this manual come with a new 4-wire com-municating PCB. When paired with a compatible communi-cating indoor unit and a CTK01AA communicating thermo-stat, these models can support 4-wire communication pro-tocol and provide more troubleshooting information. Thesemodels are also backward compatible with the legacy ther-mostat wiring.The ADVC8, AMVC8, and GMVC8 furnaces are equippedwith an electronic ignition device to light the burners and aninduced draft blower to exhaust combustion products.An interlock switch prevents furnace operation if the blowerdoor is not in place. Keep the blower access doors in placeexcept for inspection and maintenance.These furnaces are also equipped with a self-diagnosing elec-tronic control module. In the event a furnace component isnot operating properly, the control module's dual 7-segmentLED's will display an alpha-numeric code, depending uponthe problem encountered. These LED's may be viewedthrough the observation window in the blower access door.Refer to the Troubleshooting Chart for further explanation ofthe LED codes and Abnormal Operation - Integrated Igni-tion Control section in the Service Instructions for an expla-nation of the possible problem.The rated heating capacity of the furnace should be greaterthan or equal to the total heat loss of the area to be heated.The total heat loss should be calculated by an approvedmethod or in accordance with “ASHRAE Guide” or “ManualJ-Load Calculations” published by the Air Conditioning Con-tractors of America.*Obtain from: American National Standards Institute 1430Broadway New York, NY 10018

Location Considerations• The furnace should be as centralized as is practical

with respect to the air distribution system.• Do not install the furnace directly on carpeting, tile, or

combustible material other than wood flooring.• When suspending the furnace from rafters or joists,

use 3/8" threaded rod and 2” x 2” x 1/8” angle asshown in the Installation and Service Instructions. Thelength of the rod will depend on the application andclearance necessary.

• When installed in a residential garage, the furnacemust be positioned so the burners and ignition sourceare located not less than 18 inches (457 mm) abovethe floor and protected from physical damage by ve-hicles.

High Altitude DerateWhen this furnace is installed at high altitude, the appropri-ate High Altitude orifice kit must be installed. This is re-quired due to the natural reduction in the density of both thegas fuel and combustion air as altitude increases. The kitwill provide the proper design certified input rate within thespecified altitude range.High altitude kits are purchased according to the installa-tion altitude and usage of either natural or propane gas. Referto the chart above for a tabular listing of appropriate altituderanges and corresponding manufacturer’s high altitude Natu-ral Gas and Propane Gas kits. For a tabular listing of appro-priate altitude ranges and corresponding manufacturer's HighAltitude Pressure Switch kits, refer to either the PressureSwitch Trip Points & Usage Chart in this manual or the Ac-cessory Charts in Service Instructions.

Single Stage ThermostatA single-stage thermostat with only one heating stage maybe used to control this furnace. The application of a single-stage thermostat does not offer “true” thermostat-driven two-stage operation, but provides a timed transition from low tohigh fire. The furnace will run on low stage for a fixed periodof time before stepping up to high stage to satisfy thethermostat’s call for heat. The delay period prior to steppingup can be set at either a fixed 5 minute time delay or a loadbased variable time between 1 and 12 minutes (AUTO mode).If the AUTOmode is selected, the control averages the cycletimes of the previous three cycles and uses the average todetermine the time to transition from low stage to high stage.To use a single-stage thermostat, turn off power to the fur-nace, move the thermostat selection DIP switch to the OFFposition. Set the desired transition time by setting the tran-sition delay DIP switch to the desired ON/OFF position. Turnpower back on. Refer to the following figure.

PRODUCT DESIGNCoil Matches:A large array of Amana® brand coils are available for use with the ADVC8 furnaces, in downflow applications, and withAMVC8 and GMVC8 furnaces, in either upflow or horizontal applications. These coils are available in both cased anduncased models (with the option of a field installed TXV expansion device). These 80%+ furnaces match up with theexisting Amana® brand coils as shown in the chart below.

Coil Matches (for Goodman® and Amana® Brand units using R22 and R-410A):

• All CAPF coils in B, C, & D widths have insulated blank off plates for use with one size smaller furnaces.

FURNACE SPECIFICATIONS

1. These furnaces are manufactured for natural gas operation. Optional Kits are available for conversion to propane gas operation.

2. For elevations above 2000 ft. the rating should be reduced by 4% for each 1000 ft. above sea level. The furnace must not be derated, orificechanges should only be made if necessary for altitude.

3. The total heat loss from the structure as expressed in TOTAL BTU/HR must be calculated by the manufactures method in accordance with the"A.S.H.R.A.E. GUIDE" or "MANUAL J-LOAD CALCULATIONS" published by the AIR CONDITIONING CONTRACTORS OF AMERICA. The totalheat loss calculated should be equal to or less than the heating capacity. Output based on D.O.E. test procedures, steady state efficiency timesoutput.

4. Minimum Circuit Ampacity calculated as: (1.25 x Circulator Blower Amps) + I.D. Blower Amps.

1. These furnaces are manufactured for natural gas operation. Optional Kits are available for conversion to propane gas operation.

Note: The optional usage of a dehumidistat allowsthe furnace’s circulator blower to operate at a slightlylower speed (85% of desired speed) during a combinedthermostat call for cooling and dehumidistat call fordehumidification. This can be done through anindependent dehumidistat or through a thermostat’sDEHUM terminal (if available). This lower blower speedenhances dehumidification of the conditioned air as itpasses through the AC coil. For proper function, adehumidistat applied to this furnace must operate on24 VAC and utilize a switch which opens on humidityrise.

as needed. The first task is to determine the proper aiflow for the cooling system.3. For most cooling applications, about 400 CFM per ton is desirable.4. The chart is for information only. For satisfactory operation, external static pressure not to exceed value shown on

rating plate.5. Do not operate above 0.5" w.c. ESP in heating mode. Operating between 0.5" w.c. and 0.8" w.c. is tabulated for cooling

Note: The multi-speed circulator blower also offers severalcustom ON/OFF ramping profiles. These profiles may beused to enhance cooling performance and increase comfortlevel. The ramping profiles are selected using DIP switches5 and 6. Refer to the following figure for switch positionsand their corresponding taps. Refer to the bullet points belowfor a description of each ramping profile. Verify CFM bynoting the number displayed on the dual 7-segment LEDdisplay.
