Competition HandbookThe competition handbook is available on the regional website as a .pdf document. Individual forms and information pages are available as separate .pdf pages so you don’t have to print the entire handbook if all you want is one specific page. Click here to access the handbook.
It is recommended that each chorus appoint a Competition Coordinator who is responsible for sending in the forms and money by the deadlines printed in this handbook. The deadlines for the forms are clearly indicated. Please make the deadlines a priority on your calendars. In order for everything to run smoothly, all forms and money need to be in on time.

Regional Management Team
Team Meeting Notes
The Regional Management Team met on Sunday, January 1889 following the Winter Regional Mee=ng in Houston.
Regionally appointed team members for the 2015-‐17 term will be: Events Coordinator, Marilyn Turner; Finance Coordinator, Cheryl Pyle; Marke=ng Coordinator, Elizabeth McCurdy.
Sheri Strawther received the majority vote by front-‐line directors to serve as Directors Coordinator for the term 2015-‐17.
The team is accep=ng applica=ons for the 2016-‐18 term for these posi=ons:
• Communica=ons Coordinator
• Team Coordinator
• Membership Coordinator (this is an elected posi=on by members of the region but we need a current RMT applica=on on file to begin the process)
• Educa=on Coordinator (this is an SAI appointment but needs to begin with the RMT applica=on process as well.)
The RMT Shadow Program is alive and well, if you think you would like a seat at the 8-‐member table and would like to see how things work please contact any of the current team members to get started. The applica=on, job descrip=ons and contact informa=on are found here: h[p://www.region10sai.org/management-‐team
Cheryl Pyle reported the region’s finances are again in very good shape; the team is to review the budget and be ready to accept at the April RMT mee=ng.
Ronda and Marilyn gave us an overview of the Winter Regional Mee=ng. There were 194 in a[endance and the overall comments regarding our faculty, Mary Rhea, were very posi=ve. Some items we need to address for future events are loca=on and cost of meals. Our next event will be the Leadership Conference, May 15-‐16. A director’s track is in the works for this date as well, watch for details.
Ronda gave us a sneak peak of future educa=onal events from the Educa=onal Steering Commi[ee mee=ng held on Friday prior to the Winter Regional Mee=ng. (Be ready for some exci=ng, fun faculty and a new look for area schools.) She also updated our Chapter Visit schedule and discussed some possibili=es for YWIH fes=vals and the Girl Scout Patch Program as a way to promote the art form, not as a membership event.
Carol, Elizabeth and Karla will be looking at ideas for a new Plus 1 pin for members who bring new members to the Region. They are also working on ways to promote the new SAI/GS patch program. Check it out here: h[p://www.sweetadelineintl.org/index.cfm?id=560
And finally, as is our tradi=on, the team selected the 2015 Honoree for Region 10’s Hall of Fame Award to be presented at compe==on, March28, 2015. h[p://www.region10sai.org/hall-‐of-‐fame

Tu n e I n W i t h Te nYoung Singers Foundation
FundraiserThis is a huge thank you for the choruses that participated in the fundraiser for the Young Singers Foundation: Austin Harmony, Acappella Unlimited, Azalea City Harmony, Baton Rouge, Bayou Blend, Chisholm Trail, Crescent City, Heart of the Pines, Lone Star, Piney Hills, Southern Acappella Sound, Spirit of Southeast Texas. Texas Harmony, The Woodlands, and our current reigning quartet, Five O’clock Somewhere.
Thank you, also, to all those who purchased raffle tickets at the Winter Regional this past January. We ran out of tickets but we will have many more at the Region 10 contest if you didn’t get a chance to buy some.
The tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00
I would especially like to thank Gail Eltgroth for putting the blocks together and to Carolyn Bottemley for quilting them. They both did an outstanding job. The workmanship is unbelievable.
The Young Singers Foundation’s purpose is to promote the study and performance of vocal music. The Foundation was established by the leadership of Sweet Adeline International to enrich the lives of young people through educational programs in vocal music by awarding scholarships to vocal music students and providing grants to school and community based music programs. Our organization and its supporters understand and value the joy derived from singing and performing and the overall effect music has on the lives of people everywhere.
Be sure to visit the Young Singers Foundation booth at the Region 10 contest in March and purchase your tickets for the quilt, as well as a wooden cross that will be raffled off at the same time.See you in March!

Hi Region 10,
We had a great time at the Winter Regional in January with Mary Rhea, with some great quartet coaching and lots of fun with the pickup double quartets. Congratulations to all the quartets to participated in the Mock contests and coaching. A Big Thank You to Janet Burnett, Janie Macchiaroli and Mary Ann Wydra for being our judges for the Mock Contest. Congrats to all of you that participated in the pickup double quartet. If it was your first time, you are on the road being a more independent singer and an even greater asset to your chorus.
We have some exciting events coming up over the next several months.
The May Leadership Meeting
The May Leadership meeting on May 15-16, 2015 will have two tracks similar to last year's May Leadership meeting with an administration and music/directors track. This regional weekend was to be facilitated by the Regional Management Team and the Education Faculty; however, since Sweet Adelines International is not having a Directors Seminar this summer Region 10 has decided to have guest faculty brought in for this weekend. The guest faculty will be Joan Boutilier who is a Sweet Adeline International Sound Judge, Member of the International Board, a member of the Directors Education Committee and Tenor of the 2008 International Quartet Champions, the Four Bettys. She will be doing some joint leadership classes and will be handling the Directors/Music classes. We are very excited that she was able to join us at such late notice.
Also, something new at the May Leadership Meeting is the drawing for chorus coaching at the FALL regional weekend. From the choruses represented at the MAY Leadership weekend, we will draw for the opportunity to receive a 1 ½ hour coaching session with Peggy Gram and Dale Syverson at the FALL Regional Weekend. We will draw 1 chorus from B level and above and 1 chorus from C+ level and below. At least 1 member from the drawn chorus must be present at the drawing and the chorus must commit to having 75% of their chorus at the FALL Regional Weekend for this coaching. The coaching will be held during an open session, allowing everyone the opportunity to observe and learn.
Regional Song:
We will have a new regional song, Swinging on a Star, in the near future. Be on the lookout for when this new tune will be available.
Summer Area School change:
We will not be having an Area School this year. We are trying something new by reaching out to our Small Choruses. Did you know that small choruses make up the majority of Sweet Adelines? Did you also know that our region is one of the largest “geographically”? The Education Steering Committee met and determined that we need to provide our small choruses, scoring C and below, a little more TLC; so we will be coming to areas closer to you and providing classes more specific to your needs. If you are a small chorus and have not received and or filled out the survey, please email me so I can get another copy to you. The plan is to have it on the same date as the originally scheduled area school, June 27, but more centrally located to the smaller choruses. Also, if any Region 10 members wish to attend these Small Chorus Symposiums they are welcome to, knowing that the classes and coaching will be geared more to the choruses in attendance. We all learn something at the education classes and during coaching of others. Please be on the lookout for more information. Directors of these choruses, please email me at [email protected] for further information and the survey.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Best of Luck to all competing quartets and choruses in March; may you leave your best performance on stage.
In harmony,
Ronda

Regional Management Team
You are heard…A giant “Thank You” to everyone who came to the 2015 Winter Regional Meeting, January 16-17! We had 194 (after deducting no-shows and adding on-site registrations) excited attendees. Mary Rhea did an outstanding job! Quartets were coached, double quartets entertained (how many were in YOUR double quartet?—ask someone!), regional quartets performed (some both Friday and Saturday nights), and a wonderful learning-time was had by all.
Your Regional Management Team met on Sunday and reviewed the evaluations. Did you think we just filed them? Here are some comments and answers.
“I did not get the reduced room rate.” Please let our regional folks know about any problems WHEN YOU ARRIVE! If you missed the original hotel registration deadline, we may be able to work with hotel staff to make adjustments before your final bill is tallied!
“No meat for lunch.” The days of getting a salad, a meat entree, dessert, tea and coffee for $16 (tip included) are long gone. With today’s pricing, we are hard-pressed to get the salad, a hot pasta entree, dessert and tea at the all-inclusive price of $16.
These lunch buffets are planned so that we can eat and return to classes without the stress of moving a car, waiting for a restaurant check, and rushing back.
If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know BEFORE the meeting, so we can make special accommodations for you.
Would you be willing to pay $20 if a breast of chicken were included?
“Bar prices are too high.” Please check the cost of your drink as you order to avoid sticker-shock. Hotel bars can be expensive, but some offer specials.
“The location is too far.” Several years ago our Finance Coordinator compiled a chart which compares the mileage from and between each and every chorus in Region 10. Since the Harmonic Progression in 2013, we measure from Fort Worth to the Rio Grande Valley (as always), but our east-west stretch is from San Antonio to Mobile (almost to the Alabama/Florida border). The location which incurs the least member miles is still Houston, and Houston has the ONLY hotel in our region able to accommodate our contest in-house.
We have tried for a number of years to ease the travel situation by scheduling summer area schools (one in Texas and one in Louisiana). Attendance at those area schools has been falling, so our Education Steering Committee is considering other summer educational opportunities. Watch for upcoming announcements about those plans.
“The January date is too near the holidays.” For many years the winter regional meeting has been held on the third weekend in January with our goal being to give our all of our singers---including competing quartets---education and training that apply directly to contest preparations. Changing the timing of this meeting to a later date would likely cause conflict with chorus retreats, availability of international faculty and deadlines pertaining to our own contest weekend. We understand that the dates do not fit everyone’s calendar, but we do our best! Be sure to look at the Regional website www.region10sai.org for a complete list of upcoming meeting dates, so you can plan ahead.
If you have any questions at all, please contact me ([email protected]) or any of your Regional Management Team members. All of our e-mail addresses are on the regional website.

Membership Matters by Carol Mouche’, Membership Coordinator
Staying Connected: February 13 Deadline For Database UpdatesCommunica=on is vital to keep our choruses moving forward. All of our members need to feel engaged on rehearsal night, but especially on the other 6 days when they are not on the risers. Most choruses use email to relay key informa=on, but some are finding that our younger members are more responsive to cellphone text or Facebook messages. That may be frustra=ng to those of us who are older, but we need to learn to adapt to changing genera=ons – and technologies -‐-‐ to keep our organiza=on growing.
With that in mind, you might consider asking one of your younger members to be responsible for staying in close contact with other members close to her age in their preferred method of communica=on. What is key is that you DO stay connected, or else they will miss out on essen=al informa=on and you will miss out on their par=cipa=on.
Our Interna=onal office in Tulsa also needs to keep us well-‐informed, which means your contact informa=on must be accurate on the Headquarters database. Too many of our chorus members (new and veteran, regardless of age) are missing out on valuable informa=on about their Sweet Adelines membership.
Please help us – and yourself – by checking your online records and upda=ng them as necessary by Friday, February 13. This is requested by the SAI Membership Department (Ann-‐Marie Dowling, Membership Manager; and Linda Davis, Membership Specialist) who provided us with the following informa=on.
There are two ways to make updates via the Sweet Adeline InternaBonal website (www.sweetadelineintl.org):
1. By chapter leader: Login to the Members Only sec=on, click Chapter AcBvity/Reports > Add/Transfer/Update Members, click your chapter name, your membership list will appear, click on the pencil icon next to each member’s name to access their profile page where all updates can be made.
2. By member: Login to the Members Only sec=on and click on the Update Your Info link from the Members Only menu, this will bring you to your profile page where all updates can be made.
• Direct link to Members Only login: h[ps://secure.sweetadelineintl.org/members_online/members/login.asp
• Make sure to click Update Member to save all changes.
Usernames and Passwords: Each member can login by using their last name and first ini=al for their username (ex: Jane Smith = smithj) and their member ID number for their password. Please be sure that all of your members are aware of their login informa=on.
Tracking UpdatesTo ensure that members have made updates before the deadline you will no=ce a column in your membership list that indicates the date and =me of when the last update was made to that member’s profile page. Even if a member’s contact informa=on is current – all member profile pages must be reviewed before the deadline. Remind any members who have a date in this column before January 2015 to review their profile and make updates. Members who show a date in this column before January 2015 will be contacted by phone or email to ensure their contact informa=on is accurate. Chapter leaders will also be reminded of any outstanding updates that need to be made.
Chapter-‐At-‐Large MembersAt-‐Large members will receive an email from Interna=onal reques=ng their assistance by reviewing and upda=ng their contact informa=on through their online Member Profile page. Please email [email protected] with ques=ons or concerns.

Happy New Year! We are s=ll on “cloud nine” from our Harmony Classic experience in Bal=more! It was great to share the stage with our Region 10 sisters in song, The Woodlands Show Chorus and 5 O’clock Somewhere. Upon our return from Bal=more, we took a much-‐needed break from rehearsing for one week to celebrate with a “Wine Down” party at the home of one of our members. Fun, food, singing and of course… wine! Then it was =me to dust off our Christmas carols for some holiday performances. In January, some of our members a[ended the Winter Regional weekend in Houston. We really enjoyed the classes and Mary Rhea was excellent as the featured faculty.
In January we are having two guest nights as part of the Global Open House program. We are also gearing up to sing the Na=onal Anthem at a San Antonio Spurs basketball game in February. It is always a thrilling experience to sing for such a large, enthusias=c crowd. We have also been invited to sing the Na=onal Anthem at the preliminary pageant for the Miss San Antonio and Miss Texas Scholarship Organiza=on. We are really excited to be a part of this event.
Add in coaching sessions with Joe Connolly and Renee Porzel, pre-‐contest retreat and singing “Metrograms” for Valen=ne’s Day, and we have a pre[y busy month ahead! We look forward to seeing you all in March at the Regional Compe==on!!!
"Alone we can do so li[le. Together we can do so much." An amazing, dauntless woman named Helen Keller is credited with these words. Yet they also define in many ways the spirit and resolve of Sweet Adelines and our wonderful Aus=n Harmony Chorus.
By working together to spread the word, we were privileged to accept invita=ons to 12 holiday celebra=ons. We sang at senior living centers, partnered with Accapella Texas men at the Capitol Rotunda, joined with many bedazzled viewers of the Trail of Lights, and once again entertained mall and downtown shoppers. We even sang inside a downtown barbershop! A special treat was hearing our voices reverberate in the cathedral-‐like atmosphere of Natural Bridge Caverns.
As a change of pace in our schedule and with the generous support of quartets "Soundwise", "Vibe", and "Head-‐Over-‐Heels", we kicked up our efforts to perform our annual show in November which gave us the opportunity to share musical selec=ons beyond our Christmas repertoire.
To enhance our camaraderie, we delighted in a guest visit from a troop of young Girl Scouts who came to learn about barbershop singing to assist them in earning a badge. We also enjoyed adding Pax Stone and Shelly Bass to our Lead sec=on.
Last but not least two permanent guests have joined our extended "family." Our Director, Nancy Bourell, and our Marke=ng Coordinator, Linda Holt, are proud grandmothers once again. Perfect and adorable, Lillian and Evelyn are most certainly poten=al Sweet Adelines of the future.
As we begin embracing our contest songs, we join with our sisters in song in harmonizing the world, especially as we bring our posi=ve energies, talent, and exuberance to the upcoming Regional Compe==on. Undoubtedly, together we have already done so much and we can and will do so much more!

Torri BelcherHello Region 10! It’s a new year and Azalea City Harmony is ac=vely moving forward. Our fundraising commi[ee is hard at work organizing a gourmet apple sale for Valen=ne's Day and selling remaining items from our Christmas silent auc=on.
On January 6 we par=cipated in the Global Open House and what an exci=ng evening it was! Six visitors came to rehearsal that night and we really enjoyed warming up with them, performing for them, and teaching tags. Three of our visitors audi=oned January 20th! Our membership chair is also working on planning a membership night for May 5.
We were fortunate to have Janie Macchiaroli coach us via Skype on January 13th. She reminded the chorus of proper posture and breathing techniques among other things. We enjoyed learning and laughing with Janie as she worked with us and look forward to seeing both Janie and Karla Fenton in February. The chorus is working hard gexng ready for compe==on and looking forward to seeing everyone in Houston!
It worked! Last fall, Baton Rouge Chorus par=cipated in the Women’s Week flurry of ac=vi=es and offered our Glee For Grownup Gals class one Tuesday night at rehearsal. We had several ladies visit that night and become “Snowflake” singers, helping us with a few songs during our Christmas performances. Three of those guests have now become official members of the chorus and there are two others wai=ng in the wings. Warmest welcome to Seiko, Anne[e, and Terry!
Baton Rouge really loves our chorus and we had requests for Christmas performances to fill the month of December. Every Tuesday and Thursday night found us sharing the season with different groups around the city. It’s truly “the most wonderful 0me of the year” for us.
When we heard that there would be Sweet Adelines at Carnegie Hall in NYC, five from our chorus made the trip to Manha[an to see Ronninge Chorus from Sweden. Totally inspiring to see that level of entertainment from people just like us! Several of our members traveled to Houston for the Region 10 mee=ng in January and reported learning an awful lot and having a great =me while they were there.
Our retreat weekend is coming soon at The Rivers Retreat Center in Covington. We hope to get some great coaching from Skyline’s director, Vickie Maybury, as she and Cate get us contest ready. See you soon in Houston!

Gree=ngs from Cajun Country & Bayou Blend Chorus!
Bal=more Conven=on was a memorable week for us. Marsha, Marisa & Karen had amazing seats for the Harmony on the Harbor show Monday night. Par=cipa=ng in the Sail Past with the flag that Marisa & Karen created was something we’ll never forget. We cheered loudly for our Region10 compe=tors!
The Christmas season was a memorable one for Bayou Blend. We sang at L’Eglise for a State Conven=on of Louisiana Clerks of Court. L’Eglise is a beau=ful sexng & the audience was quite recep=ve to our performance. Audrey Courtright hosted our chorus Christmas Party. We had food galore, played our “dirty Santa” game & brought toys, which were given to a local charity. A chorus VLQ entertained for a Mary Kay sales group. The Abbeville Stroll was well a[ended & chorus members had supper at Black’s newly reopened restaurant. While in Abbeville, we did a TV spot at Dupuy’s Oyster Shop for Paradise Louisiana (We were on TV more than one =me!). Next up was a performance at the First Bap=st Church of Broussard for the Carols and Candles program.
We really enjoy singing for the congrega=on at our rehearsal site during the Christmas season. Our final Christmas performance was at the Chapel at Acadian Village. Our chorus had dinner a~erward at La Pizzeria Restaurant (owned by our member Ellen’s daughter).
Bayou Blend’s Christmas Chorus was a success again this year. We had a good group of singers who enjoyed their =me with us. Carol Broglio has joined the chorus & two others are “in the wings” later this year. We welcomed back former members Regina Gilbert and Lynne Worth and a new member Lori Leger during the fall.
Over half (55%) of our chorus a[ended the Winter Regional Mee=ng. I’m sure you met Ellen, Doris, Catherine, Kate, Marsha, Karen, Barbara, Alice, new member Carol, Tina, Lynne, Audrey & Corla and saw lots of us par=cipa=ng in the double quartet groups. We thoroughly enjoyed Mary Rhea’s classes and the quartet coaching sessions.
Bayou Blend had a great January with an outstanding regional visit from Carol Mouché and Jeannine Thibodaux. We’re looking forward to February for two reasons. The first: Kate Su[on is hos=ng a weekend retreat in Pensacola Beach, Florida. A[endees will come back with renewed vigor and with lots of “stories” about their =me there. The second: We’re having another coaching session with our own brand of Vitamin “K” – Kim Wonders.
Next on the agenda is compe==on in March. We’ve excited about our first =me on stage with Tina Kneisler and several new members.
To our sisters in song within Region 10,
We have had an up and down quarter. The up moment was our very successful Christmas show, “We Need A Li[le Christmas, Cher” in early December. For the first =me ever, we sold out all the seats in our auditorium and had people standing in the side aisles. It was a wonderful =me and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show. Our special guests were an accapella group from Tulane University, Green Envy, and the Chalme[e High School Jazz Band. We are already star=ng to plan our show for 2015 and it is tenta=vely planned for mid-‐October. Our down moment was the loss of our dear chorus member, Wanda Schenewerk. We will miss her wonderful laugh and her wonderful support for our 3 quartets. She loved to sing; in her church choir and many years with the Sweet Adelines. First with Jazz City Chorus and later with Crescent City Sound. Several of our members had the privilege of singing at her funeral that was held at her church. The same weekend, two of our Assistant Directors, Jeannine Thibodaux and Emily LaPouble, received their Director Cer=fica=on pins from Region 10. They completed the DCP program and we now have FOUR cer=fied directors in our chorus. We want to, again, say how proud we are of these two wonderfully talented ladies. We are busy working to perfect our contest songs and have several Regional members coming to help us do just that. We look forward to seeing everyone at the end of March for contest and wish everyone well.

Fall and Winter started off with our annual show, “Wrapped Up In Harmony,” on November 22 at the Cultural Ac=vi=es Center in Temple. Our guest performers were the VocaLibre acappella group from Texas State University in San Marcos. This year we tried something different by offering anyone who was interested from the surrounding communi=es to sing 4 Christmas songs with us on the show. There were nine ladies who took the challenge, a[ended 10 rehearsals, and sang with us under the stage lights. Three of those ladies have since become members.
The Christmas holiday season began when we sang at the Santa Fe Train Depot in Temple the day Santa arrived by train. Then we entertained residents at the Meridian Assisted Living facility. One of the residents is a former (and founding) member of Chisholm Trail and she sang with us. It was a delight and surprise to the others who live there. We also performed at a Christmas party for 500 area residents who a[end the city’s Senior Community Center. Other holiday performances included singing carols at the Temple Mall.
Our largest fundraiser is in December, when we par=cipate in a gi~ wrap booth at the mall. Each member donates =me to wrap packages and promote Chisholm Trail chorus in the process. We also took advantage of the “foot traffic” to sell Deanan Popcorn as an addi=onal fundraiser.
In early January 2015, Darlene Rogers coached and voice placed us for contest. Several chorus members a[ended the Winter Regional Workshop in mid-‐January.Our annual retreat is just around the corner with coach Ruth Ann Parker and we are looking forward to a few more coaching sessions before Regional contest in Houston.
Cradle of Texas just keeps buzzing with enthusiasm and energy as reported last year! We are loving our new members and all the talents and personali=es they bring. We welcome new member Sally Burress. Also Tina, Molly and Billie are wai=ng in the wings for membership very shortly.
We enjoyed singing in some fes=ve Christmas performances and events including a fundraiser, and a performance for “Over 50’s” at Christ United Methodist church where we prac=ce each week. We introduced a hilarious Gi~ Exchange at our Christmas party at Jane's house -‐ some were reluctant to embrace the concept of 'stealing'!
Various chorus members were in some excep=onal Christmas music events with their respec=ve churches. These performances were much enjoyed by other chorus members a[ending.
We had an addi=onal reason to party in November a~er a local performance, when we celebrated President Jane's brand new US ci=zen status with red, white and blue, apple pie and ice cream!
We have greatly enjoyed and benefi[ed from coaching visits from Janet Burne[ and Kellie Welsh.
We are all looking forward to March Regional Contest and now working hard on our contest music. We have addi=onal cluster prac=ces every week in Angleton and Sugar Land -‐ thank you Lynn and Holly for all your extra traveling to us.
We have just had a very beneficial and enjoyable Saturday rehearsal back at our former 'home' in the Presbyterian Church in Angleton. Thanks as always to chorus and church member, Karon Gresham, who organizes this so well -‐ and also makes her delicious signature soup!
Members recently a[ended the January Regional event and as always came back with fresh perspec=ve on Sweet Adelines and some great educa=on.
Mary Salinas recently moved for the 3rd =me in two years -‐ she hopes to stay put…. for a while. Melissa Bailey also has a new home.Congratula=ons to Anne Runnels who became a Great Grandmother and Charlene Cummings who is celebra=ng her 50th year in Sweet Adelines -‐ we love you Char!

Happy New Year from Fiesta City. We had a busy fall and holiday season. We decided not to do a stage show this year. Instead we filled our =me with performances and learning new songs. We were invited to sing for Na=onal Night Out at a community barbeque. The audience was great and we did a special song for the kids!
Lackland Air Force Base asked us back again for their annual Angel’s Luncheon and we were treated to the general’s briefing on the opening of the new super clinic on the base.
Christmas =me was busy. We sang at many of our regular stops and included new groups like Our Lady of the Lakes. There were families puxng together gingerbread houses while we sang our carols. Some people had icing everywhere and the children were ea=ng more of the gumdrops than puxng them on the roofs of the houses!
We welcomed 2015 with new members and designing our show package for contest. See you in Houston!

Heart of the Pines Chorus had a busy Christmas season. Five of our largest audiences had more than a hundred in a[endance. We especially enjoyed being invited back two years in a row by several of our Christmas audiences. December is big. We go from performing once a month all year long to 10-‐15 =mes in just the first 3 weeks in December. Jan. 24 was our RMT Visit. We got some great choreo ideas from Rosemary Calderon, and Marilyn Turner provided useful informa=on about Region 10 upcoming ac=vi=es and plans for the future. WRM was great as usual. Thank you Region 10 RMT for building such a great region for us. We loved Mary Rhea’s classes, and our quartet, High Time, learned what we need to be working on. Thank you to our coaches Jeanine and Mary Ann. Our par=cipants in the Double Quartet Event decided it was a definite success. It was a great chance to sing with new voices in a non-‐threatening, fun scenario.
Thanks again RMT. We Love You!
Hello from Houston! Houston Horizon had an evenul fall -‐ beginning with singing the Na=onal Anthem at the NFL Houston Texans Thursday, October 9th na=onally televised game! We were thrilled to be approached by the Texans for this performance, honored to par=cipate in their "Pink Ribbon Awareness" for breast cancer night, and proud to represent all of our Sweet Adelines sisters around the world!
In December, we put on our annual Holiday Harmony Show -‐ our first holiday show under the direc=on of Janet Burne[. We had a wonderful =me including many guest singers and quartets on the show.
Now as Houston Horizon enters 2015, we have our eyes set on represen=ng Region 10 in the Las Vegas 2015 Conven=on! January began with a visit from Kathy Carmody for a strategic planning/goal sexng session. We also had a rehearsal with our beloved Ruth Ann Parker, who is helping us to cra~ our semi-‐finals contest set. As we head into February, we will have a mini-‐retreat with Becki Hine from Song of Atlanta to work on choreography for our uptune. There's much hard work to be done leading up to Vegas, but we are excited!
We have to give a special shout-‐out to two of our youngest Houston Horizon members -‐ Bri[ney Adams and Kaitlin Winkler, members of the 2015 first-‐place Region 10 Young Women in Harmony Quartet, 3KB! Your Houston Horizon family is so proud of you!
Houston Horizon is looking forward to seeing all of our Region 10 sisters at 2015 Regional Compe==on in March... Our bow-‐out performance will be something you won't want to miss!

Magic Valley Chorus is moving forward under the guidance of two of our singing members. Sheri Nemes, tenor, and Sandy Seitz, baritone, have accepted posi=ons as Interim Co-‐Directors during our ac=ve search for a permanent Director.
Late November was exci=ng as we welcomed back our Winter Texans, swelling our ranks and voices to double volume! What a joy it was to exchange hugs and six months of history before we se[led back to singing! Polishing Christmas songs was the first order of business as we prepared for our marathon month of December. Three performances in Historic Tower Theater launched the season, with faithful followers who enjoy our harmony every year. Other performances in December included Hidalgo Fes=val of Lights, A Night in Bethlehem, several luncheons, and performances at local nursing homes.
January began with all day coaching session with Rosemary Calderon the first Saturday. Her knowledge and enviable energy raised our singing poten=al and enthusiasm. The day flew by. Then Gail Eltgroth joined us for our Region 10 Annual Visit the next Monday evening. What a way to start the New Year!
Our Annual Show “Black & White & Read All Over” will be Feb.21. We invite you to come to see it. Our Open House will be held the Monday a~er the Show -‐-‐ January was so busy for us. We held a reunion of old members following the December Show and had good response so we hope for the same results in February.
Rosemary will direct us for Compe==on in March and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Piney Hills Harmony had a successful "A Cappella Christmas" on Dec. 6, our first show that featured a ma=nee and night performance on the same day. It was held at the Strauss Theatre, where the Notorious Men’s Chorus, Harmonic Engineers Quartet and Rhapsody Quartet joined us. A por=on of the proceeds benefited Angel Ministries.
In membership news: While we have had several Piney Hills Harmony members who became dual members in other choruses, we have just go[en our first dual member to join us from another chorus. Mary Helen Tschabold, a tenor from Southern Acappella Sound Chorus, is now dual with Piney Hills Harmony. And another soon-‐to-‐be member has just audi=oned and is now going through the induc=on process.

Members of Piney Hills Harmony enter the stage during their "A Cappella Christmas" show, singing carols and joining others on the risers. From le~ they are Rebecca McNeill, Keera McNeill, Lometa Rorie, Jennifer Lynch and Donna Fike.
The Sparkling City Chorus said goodbye last month to Darla Smiley who has moved back to Indiana to be with her parents. Darla was a board member, choreographer and bass sec=on leader and had nearly perfect a[endance at regional mee=ngs! She will be greatly missed. We also said good-‐bye to our Director in Training, Joe Garcia, and are marshaling on with co-‐interim directors from the chorus, Kathy Li[lefield and Nancy Burdi[. We had a great night this week with Darlene Rogers who promises to come again when visi=ng her son in Corpus Chris=. We are so lucky to have the guidance of this remarkably talented lady at this =me.
The chorus started out the holiday season by singing at the YWCA’s popular Yule=de Market. We were very busy for the rest of December performing for private par=es and nursing homes. We also had another good year of fundraising, selling Durham Pecan products.
Many in the chorus were able to a[end the January regional mee=ng and were energized by the presenta=ons of Mary Rhea. It was a great bonding weekend for the chorus. We are excited to welcome several guests to chorus who have been coming regularly since the holidays. Hopefully I will be repor=ng them as “new members” next edi=on.

The Spirit of Southeast Texas is now under the direc=on of Jeana Evans. When family obliga=ons forced Sheri Stawther to step down, Jeana took over. A Sweet Adeline of long standing, she had been serving as one of the chorus' assistant directors. Judy Davidson con=nues as assistant director.
Highlight of the Christmas season was the chorus' par=cipa=on in the annul candlelight tour of homes in Jefferson. The chorus, dressed in period costumes, performed Friday night on the lawn of one of the homes and then gave a musical performance at a local church. The tour is an annual event for the historic town of Jefferson. Last year, a pending ice storm forced the chorus to cancel its par=cipa=on.
In addi=on to the appearances in Jefferson, the chorus sang at several sites including nursing homes and Christmas banquets. It also gave a show of Christmas music at its rehearsal site, St. John's Lutheran Church, Beaumont. The chorus hosted its annual autumn Open House in October.
Carol Weeks was named the third-‐quarter Belle of Harmony. Carol was selected by the previous holder, Carolyn Mar=nez. In her recommenda=on, Carolyn said, "It is evident that Carol loves barbershop harmony. She is one of the best ambassadors for Sweet Adelines I can think of. " Carol currently serves on the member services commi[ee. "Carol sees that each job assigned to her is completed on schedule. She has a knack of making everyone feel welcome and cared for," Mar=nez con=nued. Each quarter the current Belle of Harmony selects her successor to recognize her contribu=ons to the chorus.
On Jan. 22 the chorus hosted regional visitors, Kerri Mauney and Karla Fenton for our annual regionally-‐funded visit.
Jeana has the chorus preparing its compe==on package as well as working on other selec=ons for scheduled performances in the next few weeks. We will hold our annual retreat the last weekend of January to polish off our compe==on package.

Spirit of Southeast Texas Chorus
Chelsea Martinez, an InterviewChelsea Mar=nez, tenor sec=on leader and member of the music team for the Spirit of Southeast Texas Chorus, Sweet Adelines Interna=onal, has completed her first semester in commercial vocal performance at Lamar State College -‐ Port Arthur. Her Grade Point Average for the semester is 4.0. meaning she made the President's List.
Mar=nez received a scholarship to the school last spring from Dr. Gary Stretcher, vice president for academic affairs for the college. Scholarship requirements were that she maintain a 3.5 GPA and take at least one applied music lesson per semester. An applied music lesson is a one-‐on-‐one, hour-‐long session once a week with an instructor, she explained.
Last semester she took two such lessons, in voice and piano. This semester she added guitar to her schedule, for a total of three. Her voice instructor is Blas Canedo; piano, Robert Gillam and guitar, Carl Richardson.
She is considering adding another major, audio engineering, to her schedule next fall. Both programs lead to two-‐year associate degrees.
Mar=nez would like to con=nue her educa=on a~er comple=ng her studies at LSC-‐PA. She is considering four-‐year bachelor degree programs at University of Houston, Houston; Texas State University, San Marcos; and Lamar University, Beaumont. Once all her formal, academic studies are completed, Mar=nez would like to be a studio musician, singing backup for other ar=sts.
"I love to sing harmony,"Mar=nez said, smiling.
She joined Sweet Adelines in August 2007 a month before her 12th birthday. A~er singing lead for less than a year, she asked to switch to tenor.
"I thought the tenor part was so pre[y and I loved how strong their upper registers were," she said.
When asked when she began singing, she replied "My mom says as soon as I began to talk or maybe before."
Singing isn't her only musical accomplishment, she began piano lessons at age 8 but dropped out for a couple of years. She resumed her private lessons and con=nues them even though she has weekly piano lesson as part of her college curriculum.
Voice lessons on campus is a definite transi=on from singing barbershop, she said. When she began her college voice lessons last fall, she was "too resonant, too 'pingy' for the vocal style I was being trained for."
"But Sweet Adelines has really helped my vocal produc=on and stamina, especially in the recording studio. Being consistent on the risers helped with consistency in the recording studio," she said
In one class for both semesters, Mar=nez has been vocalist with the college's "house band." She says she plans to audi=on for the "touring band" next semester.
Mar=nez enjoys singing with quartets, also. She and her three siblings, Lauren, Collin and Lindsay, sing as a quartet at local func=ons. She also has sung with other Sweet Adelines in the quartet sexng.
Besides music, Mar=nez loves to read "the classics, like Jane Austen; fantasy, like "Lord of the Rings" and the "Harry Po[er" series; mysteries, like those of Agatha Chris=e and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
She isn't just into books and music, though. She will be working as a student worker in the LSC-‐PA music department this semester. She will con=nue her piano studies and singing with Spirit of Southeast Texas Chorus.
Quite a busy young lady, don't you agree.

Do Sweet Adelines love the Christmas season or what!? Texas Harmony kicked off the season with Cocoa, Cookies and Carols, followed by performances throughout the DFW Metroplex. Great fun!
Like all of you, we tucked away our holiday repertoire, took a very brief hiatus from weekly rehearsals and returned in January to full contest mode! If you couldn't tell by a renewed emphasis on resonance, diphthongs, phrase endings and a spike in Mucinex sales, contest season is fully exposed on Facebook. Across the country, Sweet Adelines are pos=ng chorus photos with a coach smack in the middle! We've been privileged to have Dale Syverson and Ruth Ann Parker -‐ so far -‐ and look forward with great an=cipa=on to a February retreat with the fabulous Lea Beverly!
One other indicator of contest season is a series of recent earthquakes in the area, origina=ng, according to people who know stuff, at the site of the old Texas Stadium in Irving. Has no one considered it could be Texas Harmony (also in Irving) ringing chords that shake the ground?!

WOW! It’s already the end of January. It’s hard to believe that we are 3 years old now. It’s been an amazing path we’ve chosen to take. Since our last wri=ng
we’ve had the incredible experience of represen=ng Region 10 in
Bal=more where we placed 1489 interna=onally. We were also proud to support our wonderful 5 O’clock Somewhere with their performance at the quartet contest and to support Alamo Metro in their Harmony Classic performance. What a wonderful opportunity and experience that was for all of us!
Since we returned, our day=me chorus, Daybreak, has been a li[le busy with singing commitments within The Woodlands area. Daybreak performed for the North Shore Republican Women of Montgomery, Walden Ladies Associa=on, and the Northern Senate Senior Ci=zens. The Woodlands Show Chorus also sang in place of the choir for Christ Church UMC, in December.
We will again be performing at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Fes=val
April 10-‐12; preparing for our annual show on May 989 (MORE INFO TO COME!); hos=ng the Young Women in Harmony Fes=val on June 13, and performing again at The Woodlands Pavilion Star Spangled Salute on July 3. What fun that will be for all of us.
So now, it’s onward to Region 10 compe==on for our quartets and the chorus in Houston, March 27-‐29. We are excited and working hard to do our best ever. We are preparing for our “Friends & Family Night” at our rehearsal loca=on on March 16. COME AND SEE US!!!!

Southern Acappella Sound Chorus has been busy over the holidays, sharing the barbershop joy. We just love seeing the smiling faces and a few of them singing along when we visit the area nursing homes and the local Veteran’s home residents for caroling.
Our director, Cherri Barmore, celebrated the milestone of 20 years being a Sweet Adeline. She was awarded a cer=ficate and a card. (We searched for a pin online and couldn’t find one for sale.) We are so proud of her and enjoy singing with her in this journey that is Real Harmony, Real Women, Real Fun.
We have also moved into our new loca=on at the Carolyn Rose Strauss Center. There are many ac=vi=es that happen here during the week and we are hoping we will be MORE visible to ladies we want to encourage to sing with us. (As if our lime green costumes weren’t enough?!!) Their bulle=n board shows several singing ladies that have been highlighted in the newspaper. I think we can use that as a way to connect with the community.
We took a li[le =me off for family and now we are back in ac=on with Open House Monday’s in conjunc=on with Sweet Adelines’
Interna=onal push. We’ve even had a 2ⁿ =me visitor already and we are excited about how she can help round out our Southern blend. We look forward to mee=ng more new ladies in the weeks to come.
Several of our ladies a[ended the Winter Retreat, as we call it, and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about this art from Mary Rhea. We all tried our hand at the pickup quartets and met some new friends. The Young Women in Harmony 3KB did an awesome job and those young ladies have so much wai=ng in their future with more songs to learn, chords to ring and new friends to make. We envy them finding this at their age. We returned home with our heads
filled with song and knowledge …oh and we were awarded the Mission Belle a[endance award again. That makes three in a row!
The doors will stay open as we try to find a LUV connec=on in February with our Singing Valen=nes. We are already working on songs to make your sweetheart swoon and fall in love all over again. I suppose we need to find a song for those who don’t have a sweetheart and don’t want one, but I’m not sure what it would be. “These Boots are Made for Walking” maybe? Stay tuned to find out what happens next. Heart Healthy Happening on the horizon.

Happy New Year, Region 10! It’s been a while since we’ve written. We hope your holidays were great. Ours were delightfully eventful for us! When we weren’t caroling with Alamo Metro, we fulfilled several of our own gigs. We even had the pleasure of singing to Santa and Mrs. Claus (aka Kathy and Bob Dickinson)! Yes, the days have been a whirlwind since our quartet restructuring in August, with an audition, several coaching sessions and performances…and WE LOVE IT! Our newbies, Elizabeth and Elyana are a great fit! Aside from lowering the average age-range, they are great performers! Coaching plays a large role in our preparations for Regional contest. The Fall and Winter Regional meetings were very educational, with Becki Hine and Mary Rhea. “Three-most” of us were happy to have attended. Our heartfelt thanks to these wonderful coaches who know us… and love us anyway ☺ Mary Ann Wydra, Brent Dunavant, Joe Connelly, Grant Goulding and Darlene Rogers. And speaking of wonderful, how about Alamo Metro’s 4th place International Harmony Classic Award?! Yeah!!We send our best wishes to every Regional competitor, for great performances! We’ll see you soon. In the meantime, look us up (and “like” us) on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/FourmostQuartet
KCKC had a busy fall and is looking forward to an equally busy spring 2015. We had the privilege of performing in an Iberia Performing Arts League production “USO Show” in December. We participated in several numbers but closed the show with our Armed Forces Medley and God Bless America. Patriotism was alive and well in New Iberia for those five performances. We were asked to entertain at Hospice of Acadiana’s Christmas Party for their volunteers. KCKC also participated in a VLQ performance for a Mary Kay Christmas Party. We were able to sing a song or two at some of Bayou Blend’s Christmas performances.
KCKC has booked a New Iberia Optimist Club performance at a Crawfish Boil in April. A bonus of this outing is being sent home with a plate of boiled crawfish, potatoes & corn! We plan to sing the National Anthem at UL softball also.

Dear Region 10 Friends,
WOW, don’t you just love this time of year? The learning of music, notes, words, choreography ;( and all the stuff that goes into preparation for contest is breathtaking. The extra rehearsals and the extensive coaching’s are invigorating. It’s like the smell of a new Pitch Pipe in the morning. SoundWise has lined up some pretty impressive coaches for the next few weeks. These include Joe Connelly, Peggy Gram, Grant Goulding and our very own Mary Ann Wydra. We’ve also worked with Mary Rhea, Darlene Rogers, Theresa Weatherbee and theatre director Robin Williams. We hope to do our best with all this extra help.
SoundWise has been very busy this fall and winter. Early November, we were asked to sing at the Lights Of Life Ceremony-TOSA-Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. That was a very memorable and humbling experience. We were privileged and honored to be asked by the Heart of the Pines Chorus, Alamo Metro Chorus, The Marcsmen Chorus and Austin Harmony Chorus to sing on their chapter shows. We also sang for a night of caroling at the JW Marriot in San Antonio. We love to do these sing outs and you would be surprised how inexpensive we are. (Don’t get me wrong we are inexpensive, not cheap!!!)
Our personal lives are also very busy. Bonnie is married to a very talented musician and he and his band play all over Texas and of course Bonnie is their number one fan. Melissa is a wonderful mother to Mateo, who is coming up on his second birthday. Ronda and I are about to be Grandmothers. Ronda’s number eight will be here soon, as Sonya is expecting. Jane will be a new Grandmother in April and can’t stop talking about that. Both are very proud of all their children.
SoundWise is more excited than ever to compete this year. After seeing our friends in those talented Quartets at the Mock contest in January, Region 10 will surely have a fantastic contest. We wish all the quartets and choruses the best time on stage and enjoy the entire experience. We look forward to singing for you soon. See you at the Region 10 KickOff the evening of March 26, 2015.
