Ed’s letter

So welcome to our third issue. Actually I’ve just been gushing on Facebook about it, saying how awesome it is. I overuse the word ‘awesome’ all the time but hey, I’m enthusiastic. What really excites me though is the growth and positivity around the magazine. We set out to make something really different, and in the course of setting up the first one, met quite a few raised eyebrows, and ‘we’ve heard it all before’ looks. And it was hard – there are a lot of other magazines around and finding a niche, which is what really makes something work, can be tough. But right from the start it was obvious we were on to something. The other day I was clearing out some cupboards, and came across copies of lifestyle magazines that I’d edited over 10 years ago. And I kid you not – comparing them to current county magazines today, there’s almost no difference. The design is similar, the content driven by the same structure. It was almost funny actually, a real eye-opener. Regional publishing has just remained the same for decades! Title doesn’t look like any of the others; it’s brighter and more modern in outlook. Taking our inspiration from magazines like Grazia, Stylist and Sunday Times Style, we just wanted to make something that looked professional and bright, with interesting, punchy content. And we did it. And so, as I sit here writing this, we have tripled our ad sales, increased our distribution network, and extended our core team. Over three issues?! We must be doing something right. So thank you all for your support, lovely readers, advertisers and Title flag-wavers. We’re not only on course, but have exceeded our own targets, so our plans for the future are looking pretty good. Looking forward to having you along for the ride.

A bit of ME timeAward for The Best Use of Space this month (OK, we just made up that award but it’s well-deserved) goes to Merlin and Ellis in Brighton. We’re loving this small but perfectly-formed artistic hub in Kemp Town. Packed full of goodies such as new contemporary designer menswear but also stuff like pre-loved and designer pieces and one-off vintage items, it’s a friendly little space to stop, have a chat and even a coffee. They do lovely coffee!

As well as the clothing there’s also a big selection of cruelty free colognes and bathing products, which smell heavenly, and there’s a well-stocked LGBTQ bookcase too. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s plenty of knickknacks such as homeware, art cards and actual real art on the walls. There’s also a range of different events happening all the time, from art exhibitions to spoken word events and pop-up supper clubs and print workshops. It’s an absolute treasure.

Flashmob! Here at Title we love a bit of a flashmob, and combining that with fashion can only make things better. Stylist Jane Busby styled and staged more Sussex fashion flashmob shows in July, for the third year running, startling shoppers outside stores such as Eyesite, Rock Lobster, Movel Shoes, and Pretty Eccentric.

With eight models and dancers diving into the shops each time and coming out wearing their wares, crowds parted as the team exploded into music and movement. Our favourite was the Brazilian-inspired trainers from Movel. The statement on the shop window says ‘Let your ginga out - trainers designed to let the feet move freely, fluidly and with confidence’. The models certainly showed their dancing and they made the trainers irresistible to the crowds that stopped to watch.

What is ginga?!

Live by the swordAt the time of writing, it appears that England are actually doing really well in the cricket, completing an eight-wicket victory over Australia to take an Ashes series lead at Edgbaston. It’s a glorious moment – we’re making the most of it.

But it’s not just cricket we have done well at this month – we’ve also got our swag on at the JOUSTING! Yes folks, England have regained the International Jousting & Medieval Tournament title at Arundel Castle, having lost out last year to the Burgundian Alliance. Not only did we take the winning gong, but the award for the Most Chivalrous Knight of the competition was given to Darth Rimmer, knight of the Kingdom of England. We’re not sure what to make of his name but well done sir!

an artIStIc collaboratIonIf like us you love the De La Warr you probably don’t need much of an excuse to visit, but we’ll give you one anyway. In the Realm of Others is a new artistic collaboration between Project Art Works and De La Warr Pavilion intended to ‘question perceptions about the process of making art’. Over forty-five large and small-scale paintings, drawings and sculptures – produced by fourteen makers with profound intellectual impairment – are presented in a living, evolving installation that offers a rare glimpse into unknowable, creative states of being.

Project Art Works is a visual arts organisation that conducts a wide range of projects with people who have complex needs and those that support them, initiating responsive, collaborative projects between artists, galleries and other cultural organisations, and children and adults who have severe neurological impairment with their families and the services, professionals and processes that surround them.

There’s a whole load of workshops, talks and events as part of this collaboration as well as films and the exhibition. For more information: www.dlwp.com and www.projectartworks.org

“No Telegraph!” I bellow as I thunder through the front door. “The paper shop’s been turned into a vaping lounge. They just seem to sell tiny clarinets and suspicious looking bottles of potions. But no papers.”

“They’re E-cigarettes – apparently they’re good for you,” came the reply from upstairs.

“I need a sit down; I had a little run-in with the owner,” I say, slumping into a chair.

I’d found the man a little troubling, he’s got one of those alarming faces like Gazza or Ryder – a physog that never sits still. I was too focussed on his gurning and had to ask for the Telegraph on three separate occasions. It all got a little loud after that.

“Do you need one of your pills?” the wife questions.

“I’ve not had one since Ana Ivanavic sweated up in that tight tie-break at Eastbourne. I’m not having one because of him. I’d like a Capstan full strength - that’s what I smoked when smoking was good for you in the 70s,” I grumble. “Well, the dishwasher’s not working and mum is on her way,” she says.

“Get my pills,” I quickly usher.

I’ve always been a little suspicious of dishwashers – why do restaurants and hotels still get real humans to do it? Is it because they can do in 10 minutes what the dishwasher takes three hours to do? Still the wife had one put in a month ago. I was immediately startled, as when it’s on it shines a red dot on the floor, so I was convinced there was a sniper at the skylight and was just moments from ringing 999. I’ve now had several lessons on how to stack it, not stack it, use it and not use it – and all this apparently makes me an expert at fixing it.

On first inspection it appears that the thing has turned itself into a domestic cement mixer.

“Your quinoa has pebble-dashed the crockery,” I yell. “There’s enough for a nutritious breakfast for a toddler in this bowl.” The pseudo-cereal superfood had transformed itself into an instant eco wall-covering. I set about the plate with a scraper, eventually removing it along with a chunk of enamel. The superior mother-in-law arrives.

“The thing about dishwashers is that you can’t put any food in them.” She says superiorly.

“What, don’t they wash dishes?” I enquire.

“Yes, but you must rinse off all the food first.”

“Isn’t that washing dishes?” I suggest.

“No, it’s rinsing thoroughly.” She demonstrates a thorough rinsing, which is something remarkably akin to washing a plate, just without the Fairy Liquid.

“That’s a lot like washing a plate.” I say.

“Dishwashers make plates like new, brand new – it’s like they’ve just come from the shop.” She informs me, sternly. “Don’t brand new plates need to be washed before you use them then?” I quip hilariously. Then see the look on her face…

“Could you just rinse the quinoa off these, please?” I ask.

I’ve now had several lessons on how to stack it, not stack it, use it and not use it – and all this apparently makes me an expert at fixing it.

Speaking your mind

JULIE.indd 2 03/08/2015 13:03

Page 19: TITLE SUSSEX - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

M y first ever job when I was about 15 was at a Happy Eater, and near to the restaurant, nestled at the top of long driveways hidden out of

sight, was not one, but two mental institutions, one of which was closing down gradually, the other still functioning.

In the eighties, mental health still carried with it a stigma. People whispered about ‘nervous breakdowns’ and losing one’s mind, of ‘hearing voices’. I can remember the fascination we had for the closing one, Cane Hill; an imposing Victorian asylum steeped in legend about screaming electric shock treatments and cells; remember how we ventured up the hill one night, drunk and giggling, to see if we could see any crazies through the windows, tethered to their beds with thick leather restraints. Because that’s what we imagined it was like. We had images of tortured souls in straightjackets or long nightgowns, undergoing hideous sadistic treatments as they were forced to clamp down on rubber wedges, lest they bite off their own tongues. We’d seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, right?

The building of Cane Hill was commissioned by a governing body called The Lunacy Commission, established by the Madhouses Act 1882. It all sounds a bit Monty Python, doesn’t it, and seems extraordinary to us modern folk that we should apply such terms to the mentally ill these days. How far we’ve come since then.

But have we really? Do we accept our mentally ill more willingly now, or do we indeed still sweep them, and it, out of sight; pretend it’s not there? Do we talk openly about our mentally ill friends or relatives? Do we even care? Or do we just hope each time that the new combination of medication the quack throws at them will somehow fix it? Perhaps although we are indeed more open about mental health issues, we’ve still got a long way to go when it comes to knowing how to cope.

Julie Burchill recently lost her son to suicide. I say ‘lost him to suicide’ but he was lost long before that. Years of mental struggle finally culminated in what can – for him – only be seen as the relief of death. He’d been ill for years, stuck in a tortured circle of medication and treatment, recovery and remission, until one day he finally got his wish, and died. It wasn’t entirely unexpected.

“I was in Crete, having a lovely time with my husband. We went back to the room after lunch and I opened my emails - there was one from a wonderful broad called Tessa Mayes who’d been helping Jack for the past year (to my shame, I hadn’t seen him since last summer) saying JACK URGENT CALL ME. I said immediately to my husband ‘Jack’s dead.’ I had been expecting it for years.”

Anyone who has spent time caring for someone with mental illness will recognise how complex it is. There are no easy answers – for some, the path becomes easier, maybe they get fixed. For others, it doesn’t happen. Whatever the deal, it ultimately places huge pressure on those who are close. In the old days, you got labelled – a schizophrenic, an addict, a manic depressive – these days the lines are often more blurred. But what makes one person recover and another remain ill in perpetuity isn’t easily definable. One can be in a good place, a happy place, and still be steeped in torture. Julie’s son Jack is a prime example; “Some people can be fixed, some cannot. Jack first attempted suicide when he was living with a lovely girl – a nurse! – who he adored, and earning a living teaching guitar. It was the best his adult life had ever been, but he still wanted to die.” I wondered whether he’d always been ill, or what first flagged it up. “He was cutting himself, had bulimia, was isolated… endless dope-smoking - you name it. He flunked out of university twice and BIMM once - two weeks before graduation. From the age of 19 till he died at 29, he was completely self-destructive.”

That’s a long time to be dying. But as with many cases, it isn’t so much that he wanted to die – he just didn’t enjoy living. There is poetry in death, for sure, as Plath will attest. But it’s the living bit that we need to deal with, and deal with better.

Helping people who are ill, whether they’re depressed or riddled with cancer, wreaks its own damage on the carer; something Julie is keen to hammer home. “Help all you can, but put on your own oxygen mask first, as they say on the plane. Do not let the illness of your loved one destroy you.” In the meeting preamble of Al Anon – the fellowship for the friends and family of alcoholics – one of the phrases used addresses this, suggesting that the key is finding “…solutions that lead to serenity. So much depends on our own attitudes, and as we learn to place our problem in its true perspective, we find it loses its power to dominate our thoughts and our lives.” If placing the desire to die in its true perspective is allowing them to fulfil that wish, then letting them get on with it is something Julie advocates. “If they have asked, and proved, time and time again, that they want to go, LET THEM GO. If you love them, let them go - no matter what pain you will have to suffer when they do.” It’s an extraordinary level of acceptance, to embrace such an ambition, but a bit more acceptance all round might not be such a bad thing. Not everyone wants to die, like Jack, but hey, maybe we could all just be a bit less judgemental? A bit more understanding? What’s really key here is the overwhelming evidence that carers need support just as much as those who are ill. It’s not an easy ride.

Julie is working through her own pain by volunteering at a MIND shop. MIND is a national charity that states: “We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.” I asked her what she was planning to do there. “I like to do hands-on, menial things as I think and write so much. I got to love steaming clothes when I was at the Martlets (another local charity), so that’s what I’ll be doing at MIND.”

So what can we do to help? MIND is a charity running a network of local services across the whole of the UK, and Sussex is served by MIND Brighton & Hove. I believe that every person reading this article will have been touched by mental health issues in some way, and cuts in public service mean that our mentally ill are becoming increasingly less supported. So as Julie says, if you want to help, “TALK, TALK, TALK about it! GIVE MONEY! VOLUNTEER!”

It still appears that whilst there is some kind of imagined nobility in struggling with physical illness or death, mental health isn’t quite so romantic. There is serenity in acceptance – whether it’s the acceptance that the mentally ill need as much love and care as the physically ill, or that sometimes letting go is the right thing to do. But helping other people is good for the soul. Faith has also helped Julie to deal with the loss of her boy, “faith in the Lord, and a wonderful husband,” she says. She believes that he’s at peace now. “He was a good boy, a very good boy, till the sickness devoured him. I believe he is himself again, in Heaven.”

GET INVOLVEDIf you’d like to help, there are plenty of ways to support mental health charities.

MIND Brighton & Hove is the regional branch of MIND that covers the whole of Sussex – you can find them at: www.mindcharity.co.uk

If you’d like to do something more practical, the MIND shop in Hove on Church Road has a whole swathe of pioneering events coming up to both raise awareness and support local business, including a burlesque night at Nightingales, featuring Coco de Ville and other artists around Christmas and also a tattoo event with Inka Tattoos to raise awareness and funds. In addition to the quirky vintage feel of the shop they are investing in volunteers by initiating a volunteer of the month scheme where volunteers are recognised and rewarded for their contribution to the charity.

Doing an outdoor shoot on location rather than in an indoor venue always brings extra challenges – including the possibility of rain! But we were lucky with the weather. Our fabulous photoshoot

took place at the rather dashing Burgess Hill Golf Centre and it was hot, hot, hot. The venue was amazing - not only did they give us awesome places to take photos but the shop on site very kindly let us use their clubs and shoes and even included some of their clothes. This was particularly helpful as some of the clothes we’d called in from the other designers didn’t fit Robin, our male model – which was a bit of a scare at the start of the day.

The golf course offered us beautiful lakes and exquisite green land full of hills, trees and of course many golfers. We had multiple encounters with startled golfers who just wanted to play golf on a nice Tuesday afternoon.

We were given a room within the restaurant where our experienced team got the models ready and set up

the equipment; our make-up artist on site was the very skilled Charlene who transformed the models into golfing royalty. I turned around at one point and Robin actually had flowers in his beard. Our female model, Jade, not only fitted all her clothes but she rocked them too. Both models looked ready to golf with the queen of England. Does the Queen play golf?

The models’ hair and Robin’s beard were styled to perfection by the lovely Raf from Black Eye who claimed he had golfing skills… which was then challenged by Robin. We are still waiting for the grudge match. Raf served up some fashion realness though when he was released on our models’ hair; he turned them from summer don’ts into summer dos.

On the day of the shoot it was very hot and half of mine and a couple of others’ time was spent taping up the bottoms of the golf shoes to stop them getting dirty, and sticking panty-liners into the armpits of the shirts to stop them getting sweaty. Oh, the glamour! There was also quite

a long walk from the room to where the photoshoots were taking place, so going back and forth meant that when the restaurant brought us food we were starving. They were brilliant though - they also provided us with iced water, tea and coffee throughout the whole day. This was a huge help as I think half of us would have fainted without water or caffeine.

Some very interesting yoga poses were struck by Erika, our photographer, just to get the right shots. I can recall seeing the ‘laying down legs in the air’ pose on many occasions, just so that she could get the best angles with the photos. All while assistant Matt Ryan was doing the ‘standing very still and holding the flashlight’ pose.

The day was long and tiring with many clothing changes, going to and fro across the golf course, and hair and makeup alterations; not to mention keeping out of the way of the mighty middle class golfers. But the shoot was a success and we are very happy with how the photos turned out. Although the fun didn’t stop when we’d finished shooting; oh no, there was still unsticking the shoes, taking off the panty-liners, putting the clothing back in its original packaging, returning the clothes, shoes and clubs… and of course having one last drink at the classy bar.

MRS ALL IN ONE

It’s about being successful and inspirational - making a difference and demonstrating our character and strength as women

Tell us a biT abouT your background and who you areI’m Brighton born, but I spent ten years in Canada. I love being back in England and now having the opportunity to represent my country again. I’m passionate about fashion and am a semi-professional ice skater.

Tell us abouT Mrs universe and how you ended up doing This! I studied advertising and marketing and never expected to be involved with events like Mrs World. I guess I fell into this world. I competed ten years ago and then stopped until last year when my husband George convinced me to compete again. It’s been emotional. It’s hard work and very challenging, but so rewarding.

whaT’s The deal wiTh Mrs universe? how’s iT differenT froM Miss world, for exaMple? The main distinction for Mrs Universe is that the women are married. It’s to celebrate, honour and uplift the image of women today who are responsible for home and family. Mrs Universe has its own motto ‘Women of the World against Violence’. Physical beauty is a very small part; it’s more about being successful and inspirational - making

a difference and demonstrating our character and strength as women.

you’re an aMbassador for a chariTy for This evenT – whaT’s your chosen chariTy and whaT do you have To do?For Mrs Universe I will be involved with RISE and the Brighton Women’s Centre. My eyes have been opened to the harsh reality of what some women and children go through behind closed doors. I’m planning a small send off and will hopefully have a guest speaker and also a raffle for the charity.

whaT happens aT The acTual evenT in belarus? Every year up to 60 women meet in a different part of the world for this international event. The week consists of lots of events, dinners, public speaking and then finally the fun part on stage. We have a national costume round and of course the evening gown as well as a chance to demonstrate your poise and elegance. It’s about having the whole package: compassion, brains and beauty.

Tell us abouT The cloThes, who’s dressing you?Chrissie Nicholson-Wild designed and made my stunning gown for Mrs World

and I’m tempted to wear it again. I’ve always been supported by Walk in Wardrobe for gowns and accessories. My wardrobe is pretty substantial, so it’s mainly the evening gown that I need to organise. If anyone reading would like to assist please get in touch.

whaT is on The cards in The nexT year?My life is so hectic, working for a well-known international airline, modelling, competing, charity work and, of course, being a wife. After the competition I’m going to focus on building my PR business and I’d like to start a training course for pageantry as I’m a veteran and this industry is rapidly growing in the UK. I feel so blessed for all of the incredible opportunities that come my way.

finally, Tell us abouT your launch parTy evenT…I head off to Belarus for Mrs Universe on August 24, so I’ll be planning my soirée before then. Everyone is invited!

Get with the themeIf there’s anything guaranteed to make adults feel like kids again, and know it’s

allowed, it’s a themed Christmas party or event.

Themed parties tend to fall into two big categories in the world of events. Three really, if you count awards nights, but those tend often to be Oscars themes or similar so we’ll

skip those. The biggies are the summer party – stand by for hoedowns, barn dances, festivals and It’s a Knockout themes – and of course, Christmas.

Christmas is the real stonker. At no other time in the events calendar is there such a good excuse for overindulging in a ridiculous costume. Actually, a lot of themes are quite

dressy and sophisticated, but if you want to make the most of that child-like joy, here are a few themes we particularly love.

Star WarSWhat can we say about this corker!? The appearance of yet another intergalactic epic this year is guaranteed to spawn a million Stars Wars themed parties. We’re looking at space food, stormtroopers, lots of black star cloth, R2D2 and of course Darth Vader presiding, plus installed shoot-em-up space games and fights with light sabres. The force is strong with this one.

rocky Horror Picture SHoWFinally, this beloved frolic in full tackle is back again, with a new stage performance running through London in September, narrated by none other than Richard O’Brien himself (the show is at the Theatre Royal in Brighton in December). What a theme! We’re thinking giant lips, full cabaret show inspired by your favourite characters, staff in corsets and stockings and without a doubt, the Time Warp. Not for the shrinking violet, this theme.

For more theme ideas or costs on these themes for your party, contact [email protected] for a free quote and shared Pinterest board.

Suicide SquadEvery year sees its own big blockbuster and 2016 is going to be the year of DC Comics’ moody monster, Suicide Squad. With names like Cara Delevingne, Will Smith and Jared Leto in the line-up, you can pretty much guarantee this subcultural gem will seep into our mainstream. And that’s often where we see the best events themes. Expect LOTS of dressing up and comic-based fun with this one; themed event spaces and tables, and plenty of crazy live cabaret and music.

SteamPunk or GotHicDressing up will definitely add to the overall atmos of these two themes. Although both have their roots in a similar era, they’re vastly different. Steampunk celebrates science fiction and fantasy incorporating aesthetic 19th-century design, inspired by industrial steam-powered machinery, whereas a gothic theme is steeped in romanticism. For your gothic party, great fun can be had with props such as tombstones, candelabras, black table linen and lots of candles – channel vampires and poets. With steampunk we’d like to see lots of brass combined with clever LED lighting, stuff with cogs on it, lots of top hats and crazy machinery, books, velvet, maps and fading photographs.

HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT BURGER, AND THE ART OF CLOSHINGMore fat means more flavour, and getting the right ratio of meat to fat into a burger is easy if you know how. You need a patty that has at least 20 per cent fat. We use chuck steak (braising steak) and mince it on a medium-coarse blade so it has structure on bite-through. Closhing will help melt all the flavours of your burger together and is easy to do at home on the grill. All you need is a large frying pan and a metal dome, such as an upturned metal mixing bowl, to help create a steamy environment.

Makes 4 BURGeRs600g chuck steak with about 20 percent fat content, minced on medium-coarse blade300g smoked streaky bacon, minced on fine blade25ml Worcestershire sauce1 tbsp salted butter, plus extra for buttering the buns1 large white onion, sliced into rounds4 tsps of your favourite homemade or readymade BBQ sauce8 slices burger cheese8 slices streaky bacon, peppered4 large glazed unsweetened brioche or potato buns, sliced in half and very lightly buttered4 tsp mayonnaise2 pickled cucumbers sliced into rounds4 tsp yellow American mustardFlaked sea salt and freshly groundBlack pepper

1. Place the steak, bacon and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl and mix well with your hands. Form into four patties and place them on a tray lined with a sheet of greaseproof paper. Place the patties in the fridge for 30 minutes to firm up.

2. Melt the butter in a frying pan over a low heat. Add all except four of the onion slices and fry until golden brown. Set aside on kitchen paper to drain the fat off. Pull the burger patties out of the fridge and leave them to rest until they reach room temperature. Get that barbecue grill ready!

3. Before you grill the burger patties, push your thumb into the middle of each one to create a deep dimple (but be careful not to create a hole). This will help the patties to cook evenly. Season liberally with salt and pepper and place them on the grill.

So OK, we were going to do something fresh and salady for this issue because we figured that we’d buck the trend and do something clean and healthy for barbecue season. Then we thought, WHO ARE WE KIDDING?!!

TITLE RECIPE

4. Grill each patty for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked to medium. After you have flipped the patties, place a teaspoon of BBQ sauce on the cooked side and top each patty with two cheese slices. Place the peppered bacon slices on the grill, and cook until crispy.

5. Meanwhile, place your griddle or frying pan directly over the heat of the barbecue and let it heat through fully. Toast each of the burger bun halves on the grill for 1 minute or so. Spread the bottom buns with a teaspoon of mayonnaise, top with a thin slice of raw onion and a few slices of pickled cucumbers. Place the bottoms on serving plates.

6. Spread a teaspoon of mustard on the top halves of the buns and set the top halves aside. Turn over the bacon and crisp the other side. Once ready, place two rashers on each patty, over the cheese. Now it’s time to build the burgers and closh!

7. Place a tablespoon of fried onions on each patty over the bacon, then place the top half of the bun on top of each patty. With a spatula, pick up the patty from the grill and place

in the middle of the hot frying pan, ensuring you leave enough space on the outside of the pan to place the metal mixing bowl in the pan without touching the burger patties. Add a few tablespoons of water to the frying pan, and cover with the mixing bowl, creating a steamy environment to help melt the cheese and add moisture to the bun top. After about 15 seconds, remove the mixing bowl (without burning yourself!) and place the bun tops on the bottom buns on the serving plates. Allow the burgers to rest for a few minutes, then serve.

TIP:Bun choice is personal, but avoid anything with an overly chewy crumb or tough crust. We like unsweetened brioche or potato buns. Pretzel rolls are great too, but you will need to steam them using the closhing method.

Food newsNOT JUST A MARKET DINERMarket Restaurant and Bar is the latest creation from the experienced restaurateur and designer/chef duo Kate Alleston and Neil Mannifield, the award-winning team that brought you Graze, the popular AA rosette restaurant in the Brunswick area of Hove. Inspired by them stumbling upon an old Camden Market sign at an antiques fair, which will adorn the front of the building, Market will be the first restaurant in the city where bar stool dining is the main activity.

The fresh new look of the building has been designed to give the feel of a traditional market with a swathe of Victorian Green metro tiling, mirrors, a lawn wall and a bright, clean, utilitarian approach to the furniture, lighting and wall usage.

The bill of fare is to be a mixture of small plates ideal for sharing, named on the menu ‘From the Green Grocer’, ‘From the Fish Monger’ and ‘From the Butcher’. Alongside will be a series of larger dishes, from steaks to fish of the day, and on weekends, their Big Market Brunch menu. As well as an exciting wine list and cocktail menu, locally brewed craft lager and beers will be available on tap and by the bottle.

Kate and Neil are working closely with a handful of Sussex’s best local suppliers, some of whose wares will be available to buy in the restaurant. This is to be a delightful food hub – we can’t wait!

ThE PINA COlADAArguably the cocktail of the year and on a rapid ascension to knocking the Mojito off that top spot, the Pina Colada is this month’s Mixology Group and Title Sussex Magazine favourite.

Translating literally as “Strained Pineapple” the Pina Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico. Dating back to 1952, it is said to have been created by Ramon ‘Monchito’ Marrero Perez, a bartender in the Caribe Hilton Hotel, who combined Bacardi White rum, Coco Lopez Coconut Cream, freshly pressed pineapple juice and squeezed lime juice. Blended together with ice, the resulting mixture is the summer destination favourite we all know and love today: creamy, fruity, tropical and strong.

It’s that time of the year again. The Brighton & Hove Food Festival is back, jam-packed with foodie and drinkie events to delight.

During the last ten days of August, Sussex is abuzz with a wide variety of festival events – one of which has now become a sell-out runaway success each time – the International Chef Exchange. This time around, drakes in Brighton gets the fabulous foodie-swap treatment and will be exchanging chefs with the highly acclaimed fine dining Cliff at Cap

restaurant at Cap Maison in St Lucia. Executive Chef Craig Jones from the Caribbean dining hotspot will be taking over the kitchen at the restaurant at drakes in Brighton for one night only on Wednesday, 26 August, 2015.

Craig will be working alongside top Brighton chef Andrew MacKenzie to create a very special dinner showcasing his international culinary skills and in his unique French Caribbean fusion style. This gourmet, fine dining menu will no doubt heavily feature seafood as both restaurants are located on the seafront, and will be accompanied by specially selected wines which best match and enhance all three of the featured courses. If there are still any tickets left by the time we go to print, I would go and get one if I were you.

Carla ter Maat at drakes says, “We are thrilled to be participating once again in the Chef Exchange and look forward to hosting Craig. The opportunity to exhibit our respective culinary skills and foods to our partner audiences is a great thrill. It provides an exciting opportunity for the chefs to share different preparation and cooking practices, working with new ingredients, sharing new ideas.”

This event is the first part of this reciprocal exchange and therefore Andy will, in return, take over the kitchen at Cliff on Cap restaurant in St Lucia for the second part of this exchange in October. Anyone who fancies going, form an orderly queue.

The International Chef Exchange is a hugely successful initiative created by the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival that has seen leading chefs from Sussex and the South East partner with colleagues abroad. The objectives are to share best practice, showcase quality food and drink to potential export markets, and to promote the gastronomic tourism offering of participating regions. It’s successfully put Sussex on the map in terms of the superb range of foods and wines available in the region, and goes a long way to promoting the area as a whole, across the globe.

Tickets for August 26 event in Brighton are available via the Brighton & Hove Food Festival website www.brightonfoodfestival.com

Tell us abouT This placeThis is a beautiful, proper five star place on the seafront in Eastbourne. Have you seen ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’? It sort of puts you in mind of that, in all the right ways. The service is impeccable, the afternoon tea is tall and delicate, the food exquisite, the concierge discreet… They even have those silver domes over your food that they remove with a flourish simultaneously. I adore this place and took my papa for Father’s Day. He loved it too.

WhaT did you eaT?There are two restaurants at the hotel – the VERY grand Mirabelle, and the Garden Restaurant, which is where we had Sunday lunch. The Garden Restaurant, despite its high ceilings and period elegance, retains a friendly, intimate atmosphere, and the place was packed with couples, oldies, families and lovers. It’s the softer option for a more relaxed atmosphere. Jackets still required though – no rough stuff or denim here.

They do a really great set menu for Sundays, with an option to mix and match with a kind of upgrade selection. Pa had a mixed charcuterie plate to start and I went off-piste with Soy Tuna Loin Sashimi with Cucumber & Wasabi Jelly – one of the singularly most delicate and sophisticated dishes I’ve ever eaten. The main courses were also a joy. Duet of English Lamb Mint Mousseline topped Medallion with ‘Hariyali’ Confit, Chick Pea & Coriander Mash is every bit as rich and comforting as it sounds, and the Pater, whiskers drooping despondently when he heard the lobster was finished, was elated to be told moments later that a Lobster Thermidor had been located just for him. The moustaches bristled up happily again and all was well. And yes he does look like Colonel Mustard.

If there was ever a place that made you think you were on holiday without actually having to leave Sussex, it’s Aguadulce in Brighton, as Sam Harrington-Lowe finds out.

¡Viva España!

Owned and run by passionate food enthusiast Carlos Dinapoli, it’s a grazer’s heaven, rich in Spanish food made with local ingredients. Never mind your sangria and donkeys, this is proper Spanish food, with a proper Spanish welcome.

You know those places you go into in Spain, where you can plot up at the bar with a cold beer or an eye-wateringly robust gin and snack at little plates of tapas and chat? Where there’s a constant buzz of people coming in and out who all seem to know each other so you feel like you’re in a friendly home, and an array of trays on the countertop fridge thing rammed with anchovies, seafood tentacles in oil and olives? That’s what this is. They do some main dishes too – the paella is to die for – but honestly, I can’t think of many nicer things than sitting up at the counter for hours, picking endlessly at beautifully crafted little plates, and drinking with friends.

I’m not always very good at eating tapas. By which I mean I’m actually very good at eating tapas, but not very good at pacing myself. I tear straight in, scoffing down amazing plates of little morsels without breathing much in between, thinking they’re all tiny and amazing but it’s all fine because they’re small, and then very often find myself explaining patiently to my stomach a bit later that it needs to be more accommodating. (“Put the bread and oil DOWN Sam, there is plenty of food coming.”)

In truth I shouldn’t be allowed to review places like this, I’ve got no sense of restraint; often more glutton than gourmet. It’s just that everything is so tasty, and cooked with love. How can you NOT guzzle it down in seconds?

I’m not always very good at eating tapas. By which I mean I’m actually very good at eating tapas, but not very good at pacing myself

We whiled away a good few hours up at the bar, joined by Brighton Food Festival’s Nick Mosley, where we all sat idly gossiping with Carlos, and managed to work our way through an extraordinary array of foods, from the exquisite slithers of Iberico ham, to the suckling pig with bubbled crackling. Best name for a dish has to go to the perfect ‘Seagull Fights’, which were heavenly little cuttlefish and prawn croquettes, and special mention has to go to the paella, which was so authentic I nearly leapt off my stool and shouted ‘Olé’! In fact I might have done if I hadn’t eaten so much I could hardly stand. Leaping probably not on the menu by then.

The suckling pig was astounding – the tenderest pork I’ve ever eaten, topped with light, crispy salty crackling and served with slices of quince and some soft Padron peppers. I did actually drool a bit. The potatoes in a spicy Canarian mojo sauce and the authentic morcilla brought an instant sensory recall, and even the slightly baffling Heston-sounding dessert creation made with black pudding and crème caramel was good (there is some creativity happening in that kitchen). The pudding with no name.

But as well as the excellent food, the best thing about this place is the ambience. I’d move in if I could, and nearly did. But eventually we had to slide off the stools and out into the cooling summer evening. But I’ll be back. Hasta la vista Aguadulce.

Chocolate dream in the Caribbean

On any regular day island life in Saint Lucia is paradisiacal, but during culturally significant days the island truly sparkles with local essence. August’s ‘Chocolate Heritage Month’ is a prime

example of this; an occasion when the community bursts with flavourful fervour.

Dating back to the 1700s, cocoa history has been an integral part of St. Lucia’s heritage, making the Caribbean Island a known producer of top-quality cocoa. And during August, the rather stunning five star Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina is offering tailored experiences to celebrate the Island’s beloved offspring: chocolate.

Capella Hotels have an uncanny knack of blending the benefits of a fine boutique hotel with the amenities and activities of a luxury resort, and the Marigot Bay resort is no exception. There’s 124 rooms, so not exactly boutique size, but links to local surroundings can be felt throughout the accommodation with local materials used where possible. There’s a whole bunch of eateries to choose from, including the Grill at 14⁰ 61⁰, named to honour Marigot Bay’s latitude and longitude, which boasts an open plan show kitchen. Or knock back some mojitos at the Rum Cave – a rum connoisseur’s dream.

There’s swimming in pools, of course, but for those with a bit of pampering in mind, check out the Auriga Spa, which features double treatment pods all with their own rainforest shower and surrounding Zen Gardens. Heaven.

ActivitiesMarigot Bay in the centre of the west coast of the island is the perfect starting point to explore both the Southern and Northern attractions of the island. Marigot Bay was once described by the legendary American author James Albert Michener as “the most beautiful in the Caribbean”. Land and sea tours, sailing, yachting experiences, rainforest adventures, dolphin and whale watching, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, various sports activities, day excursions to the Pitons (including hiking) and the sulphur springs can be arranged via the hotel.

COSTS:Flights: British Airways flights between Gatwick and St. Lucia available from £1,141.46 per personHotel: For prices please contact www.capellahotels.com/saintlucia/For information about the destination: www.saintluciauk.org

Fancy a trip with a difference? How about a trip to the Caribbean to enjoy a chocolate workshop? Pleasure overload?! We think so…

Top tips to prepare your child for a new school

It’s a daunting time for both entry level and Year Six pupils making the transition into a new school. Charlotte Horlock looks at ways to make that transition as easy as possible for your child

Children don’t like change, but change doesn’t have to be a scary thing. With the right kind of support, your child

can look forward to starting their new school. With the help of my father, who is a retired Year Six teacher, and my mother – currently a teaching assistant at St. Nicholas and St. Mary’s school in Shoreham-by-Sea – I got the low-down on tips to help guide your child through this process. Even though there are support schemes available within schools, there is plenty you can offer as a parent too, whether you’re going up, or going in for the first time…

GoinG up - suGGest a ‘Drop in’ sessionYou might already be aware of these, but if not, drop-in sessions are becoming increasingly popular in middle schools, giving children an opportunity to talk through their worries with a member of staff. Around this time of year, drop-in leaders will discuss the transition into secondary school for pupils who need a gentle push in the right direction. It’s

handy to make your child aware that there are qualified staff on hand who will want to listen to them when they need to be heard. My mother has been running her lunchtime ‘Drop In’ at St. Nicholas and St. Mary’s for six months.

GoinG up - transfer informationEqually important as talking to your child is helping them gain as much understanding of their new school as possible. A teacher from your child’s chosen secondary school will visit the middle school in advance to give them an idea of what to expect. A prospectus

provides a visual representation and usually a description of each subject. Go through it with your child, focusing on the subjects they like the look of. Many secondary school tadpoles are afraid to start new subjects with new teachers. There is always something they will be worse at, but their timetable will include over eight subjects in rotation and they might discover something they never knew they were good at. They will receive a prospectus a year in advance, around autumn term time, and a timetable on the day they start.

GoinG up and first timers - visit the schoolWhen you accompany your child to their primary or secondary school Open Day, it’s essential that you make the experience as engaging as possible. Remind your child of the two big positives they will soon discover; making new friends and gaining independence. Encourage them to talk to the teachers on site – no one knows the school system better than they do.

GoinG up and first timers - shop (but don’t drop)We all take a moment to privately shiver at the ‘Back to School’ posters in supermarkets – but shopping for school supplies doesn’t have to be a chore. After all, your child will have new uniform this year and might like a little confidence boost. I don’t know a single secondary school pupil who thinks their uniform is flattering. So make them feel special. Treat them to the new pencil case or rucksack they have their eye on. Shop in short bursts – don’t do it all at once. You don’t want to overwhelm your child – or wear yourself out!

GoinG up - say GoodbyeEvery child gets choked up when leaving middle school (even though they might not admit it). But it doesn’t have to be goodbye. Many middle schools welcome past pupils back for work experience; compulsory in Year 10 and in some cases earlier. It’s important to make your child aware that they will have the opportunity to return if they want to, but also that they have plenty to look forward to. Similarly, young children may become distressed leaving nursery or playgroup. Parents often question if their child will cope with sitting still in a lesson. But you may be surprised how quickly kids adapt to their new surroundings. Early learning lessons have been tailor-made to free up the imagination in a controlled environment.

It’s perfectly natural for your child to worry about starting a new school, but with these tips in mind, they will be well on their way to embracing this come September with a positive mind-set.

Page 72: TITLE SUSSEX - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

If the worst happened and your children were orphaned, do you actually know what would happen to them?

What can happen to children if both their parents should die without a will? It’s a common misconception that if you die and leave your children orphaned, they will go to their next of kin, or godparents. The reality is that a Will is the only way you can ensure that your children live where you want them to. If you don’t have a Will naming your choice of guardians, it’s possible that the Court of Protection can get involved, who could then decide who should look after your children. Whilst the decision is being made, your children may be placed in care, and there is even a risk your children could be split up.

Tell us how a Will can help to protect them If you set up guardianship within your Will, then your children will go to the place you want them to. Would they be financially stable, go to the right

school? Even whether they’d be able to share stories of your life with them as they grow up. You should also consider where your inheritance goes in a case like this too. It is vital to leave a clear set of instructions in case you die whilst your children are still young. This is how a Will can help.

Who should be thinking about a Will like this? As a single parent, if your offspring’s other parent doesn’t have parental responsibility and there are no guardianship arrangements in place, they could be taken into care. Or maybe for personal reasons, it would not be correct for a child to live with that estranged parent. If they are named on the birth certificate and therefore have parental responsibility, they could be deemed to have a right of guardianship, overruling someone much closer to your children. For example, a loving stepfather who has brought up a child or a live-in grandparent does not automatically have priority over a father who has never

seen his child. For couples it’s likely that the surviving parent will step up, but it’s recommended that a guardianship is set up anyway, in the unlikely event that both parents die together.

SUSSEX DO THE BUSINESSThe Sussex Business Awards return this year to celebrate the county’s best in the industry, from new, innovative companies to international globetrotters

How do you mAke A BuSineSS STAnd ouT from THe crowd? From tireless workers to community action to advertisements and marketing, the world of business is fraught with risk and tough truths and the reality is that for every ten businesses set up this year, nine of them won’t make it past their two-year anniversary.

However, in Sussex we’re blessed with a high percentage of companies that have thrived in the pressure-cooker of business democracy and lived to tell the tale. Therefore, to celebrate the county’s very best in business excellence are the Sussex Business Awards, which are returning for their 27th successive year.

There are fifteen trophies up for grabs at the glitzy awards night including the prestigious Sussex Company of the Year, as well as other awards for innovation, customer service, small and international businesses and entrepreneurs, along with many other options.

For the second year running Mike Herd, the executive director of Sussex Innovation Centre and the Sussex Businessperson of the Year 2000, will be taking his place as Chairman of the Judges. Mike was also recently awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion and is looking forward to judging the biggest and best businesses and people from the last year.

For the first time Title Sussex

Magazine will be media

sponsors of theSussex Business

Awards and we’re extremely proud to be supporting

such a recognised event

“I am delighted to have been asked to take up the Chair of the Sussex Business Awards once again,” Mike commented. “This year no doubt there will be many other businesses across the region hoping they can follow in the footsteps of 15 winners across all categories. But the real beauty of these awards is that, no matter who takes the accolades, we can all join together to celebrate business success in this remarkable county.”

For the first time Title Sussex Magazine will be media sponsors of the Sussex Business Awards and we’re extremely proud to be supporting such a recognised event, which helps to acknowledge and reward the businesses that make Sussex what it is.

Caraline Brown, the awards organiser from Midnight Communications, said, “I am proud to be involved in these established awards, which have carved a vital place in the business community. The awards demonstrate what a terrific place Sussex is for creating and doing business. Twenty seven years since they were first launched, the awards have become an unmissable date in our business diaries and I am delighted that they continue to give local businesses the chance to demonstrate outstanding performance and excellence in their field.”

Confessions of a networking girlEach month our incognito networker joins the Great and Good of Sussex to bring you the inside story of the best of the county’s networking. Who was there? What did they eat and did they push the boat out on the vino!?

SuSSex chAMBer of coMMerce BreAkfASt We joined Sussex Chamber of Commerce for its Eastbourne double header. The day began with breakfast networking and finished with a trip to the Aegon International tennis at nearby Devonshire Park. Wahey!

I’m no stranger to breakfast briefings and accustomed to the full works so a little taken aback when the morning’s main event was …a bacon sandwich… served (whisper it) on a paper plate!

But it all proved worthwhile as the great and good of the Eastbourne business community showed their faces to the point where there was a clamour for leaning space around the tables.

And as for the tennis – a great day out, but barely a jot of networking. Everyone stayed in their groups with only a few chatty moments. Was it down to the tennis or the Pimms? You decide!

Superfast business broadband grants

Did you know that there’s a £3,000 FREE Government grant available for superfast business broadband? Businesses who have looked into the possibility of getting a decent connection for their business will know how expensive it can be, but the Connection Vouchers scheme offer up to £3,000 towards the connection. It’s the government’s initiative to support businesses by enabling better, faster connectivity.

That’s great, but what’s REALLY interesting is the way it’s possible to club together as groups and often end up with the installation costing the individual businesses nothing. If you’re a landlord with business tenants, you can claim a voucher per tenant. Equally, as a syndicate, a group of tenants can all apply for separate vouchers. In fact, you don’t even need to be in the same building. A bunch of companies on a business estate can claim, or even if you are one of many working from home, close to each other in a neighbourhood.

You need to claim these vouchers via an approved supplier. For more information and to ask questions, get in touch with BroadCell, a Sussex-based ISP covering the whole region.

You decide!

In Vino Veritas? No vino. A nice range of teas but sadly no cold drinks!

Quality of nibbles? Definitely needs some work on the food side.

TECH FIVEFrom festival findings to an internet invasion, Amanda Horlington breaks down what’s going up and down in the world of technology

Dear Ms Swift,

First let me congratulate you on aiming your gorgeous and pricy designer sandal to kick Apple Music in the Bramleys. Taylor Swift, you are a flaxen haired end-of-level-boss. Kerpow! A spindly but mighty gladiator. Thwack! You unleashed the hell dogs of 300 sweaty lawyers and a sprinkle of tweets to do battle to secure what was truly your birthright; your royalties for three months of Apple Music streaming. But have I a bone to pick with you and your talented musical chums. I’m guessing your earliest musical purchase didn’t involve a bus trip to musty high street retailer Our Price to buy your first ever vinyl (Off The Wall by Michael Jackson since you ask), only to purchase it again on cassette, later on CD, again through iTunes and a myriad of streaming services (don’t even get me started on compilation albums). I dare say when the ability to download music straight to a widget in your brain finally arrives, it will have me purchasing the same track listing yet again, paid for this time in synaptic MindCoins. “I just don’t agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free,” you argued in a spat with Spotify last year and I’m right with you girlfriend. Only I don’t agree that I should be paying for tracks several times over either. So who’s going to rumble in the jungle and dance like a kick-ass butterfly for me, hmmmm?

Ever wondered what the automotive equivalent of an Apple iPhone would be, then look no further than the Tesla Model S.

Manufactured in California and funded by the PayPal billionaire Elon Musk, this all-electric five-door coupe is not so much a glance into the future, this is a taste of the future.

First launched in the States three years ago and now conforming to European specifications, including right hand drive, there’s a familiarity to its exterior styling, as if it’s an acknowledgement that history still has something to offer to these Silicone Valley upstarts. The cabin, however, is as the designer envisioned it; unfettered and revolutionary. Dials and counters have been replaced with a neat digital instrument binnacle, while a 17” touchscreen becomes the nerve centre for air-conditioning, audio and functions such as regeneration braking, air suspension height, even the charge-port hatch, sunroof and demisters. There’s no starter button, either. The car knows the key is onboard and activates itself.

Rear wheel driven by a 416bhp AC motor, power comes in the form of an 85kWh battery, which is good for 250-odd miles between charges. At a 32-amp UK public charging point, the Tesla needs 15 hours for a full charge, half that for a high-output Tesla home charger. A network of 80kW superchargers are planned, which will pump half a charge in 20 minutes, a full charge in 70 minutes.

Instant torque catapults it from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds, maxing out at 130mph, all with zero emissions. And apart from any road noise, it does so in complete silence, with every handling confidence of a thoroughbred sports GT.

This brilliant technology isn’t particularly cheap; prices range from £59,500 to £84,100, but then again, neither is an Apple iPhone.

GREAT EXECTATIONS

The Rugby World Cup kicks off in September and with two games to be held at Sussex’s Amex stadium, Title caught up with former England captain and World Cup winner Mike Tindall, to get his views on England’s hopes and more

In September the Rugby World Cup will return to England for the first time since 1999 and with it brings England’s best chance to win the tournament since they last claimed the Webb Ellis trophy in 2003, according to Mike Tindall.

Tindall, 36, was part of the last England side to win the World Cup in Australia 12 years ago and, despite currently

being ranked fourth in the world, he believes only the All Blacks can stand in the way of the home side’s prospects. “If I put my hand on my heart I don’t see England losing,” Tindall told Press Association Sport. “With the home advantage and the leaps and bounds they made at the Six Nations, they are in a really good spot right now. Their strength in depth, especially through the pack, is incredible and now they have a backline that is backing them up. England have got a very high level of performance and consistency, so I can see them getting to the final. You would put money on New Zealand being there to face them and then it is just a one-off game, but England have that game to beat them.”

Sussex will play host to two of the tournament’s Pool B matches, as South Africa face off against Japan on Saturday 19 September before Samoa take on the USA the following day. But Sussex has more than one link to the tournament, as it has been the starting point for three of the players pushing for a place in the tournament squad. Billy Twelvetrees, born in

Chichester, played for a number of West Sussex rugby sides including Haywards Heath, where he lined-up alongside Harlequins prop Joe Marler, who was born in Eastbourne. London Wasps’ Joe Launchbury also has roots in the county as he attended Christ’s Hospital and played for Horsham and Worthing before moving to the capital. With a strong squad to choose from Stuart Lancaster will have to make a number of tough choices during the tournament, something that Tindall has become all too familiar with since hanging up his boots in July 2014. Since then he has stepped into the realm of reality TV - not the most obvious choice of career move for somebody that married into the Royal Family. But the husband of Zara Philips - the Queen’s granddaughter - has got stuck into the reality sphere like it was a scrum against the All Blacks. Not once but twice the 36-year-old has put himself through the mill for our entertainment - first with The Jump, the Davina McCall-hosted winter sports competition and then with Bear Grylls: Mission Survival, an intense endurance journey in the rainforests of Costa Rica.

“The Bear Grylls thing was around the time of the start of the season and it was a way of taking my mind off anything else and refocus and just get out there. With The Jump, when it was on last year, I said I’d love to do that just for the skiing side of it and when they asked me, it was a bit of a no brainer. I wanted to do it and it fell into my lap at the perfect time.”

England have got a very high level of performance and consistency, so I can see them getting to the final

But there was more to it than giving him purpose. Ever the fierce competitor, self-improvement was also a factor. “For me to do them they had to have the element of a challenge. They had to have something that I felt they would get out of it.” With Mission Survival, through the epic 12-day survival test Tindall wanted to push his physical and mental wellbeing to the limit. “I always said, if you think about a rugby player being a manly, deal with anything sort of guy, a tough guy, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to find out if I am, whether I am durable in the true sense of the word. That was the challenge. In the lead up, to prepare myself I tried to imagine the worst that it could possibly be. Luckily we didn’t get there!”

Drinking your own urine, as contestants on Mission Survival had to do, would be considered many people’s definition of “worst it could possibly be.” Yet Tindall emerged during a time when such activities were standard as rugby dressing room camaraderie - no, really - and he managed to do it with worrying ease. “Unfortunately initiations are old school rugby and they don’t happen so much nowadays. But initiations definitely could have involved that in the past. And I have to admit that it wasn’t the first time; Bear did look at me a bit strangely when I said, ‘are we drinking our own or are we drinking other people’s?’”

Overall, Tindall enjoyed his foray into light entertainment, but is unsure if he’ll be making another reality TV appearance. He has other interests to consider, such as media performances and his charity work, which does so much good for military veterans. The former Bath and Gloucester outside centre is patron of Rugby for Heroes and through his annual celebrity golf day has raised over £100,000 to help former army officers to get back to normal civilian life. At this year’s event, playing in bright multi-coloured trousers, Tindall finished well off the pace and after coming second in both The Jump and Mission Survival he jokes that his days of winning might have ended with his rugby career. “I’m getting used to that now. I’ve been lucky in the past at winning finals. But I can’t win any outside of rugby unfortunately!”

Andreya Triana will perform at Boomerang Festival in September, and her return will be the climax of years of artistic evolution, as Daniel White finds out

THE SWEET SOUND OF PROGRESS

It was a really amazing time in Brighton and I met some amazing people and wrote some great music.

It was just six years ago that the soul songstress Andreya Triana was waiting tables at a sushi restaurant in Brighton. Writing tracks in her spare time, she struggled to pay her rent. However, this September she will return to the county where her career

began to perform on the main stage at Boomerang Festival, a moment that will mean a lot to her.

“It’s always sentimental every time I come back to Sussex because that’s where I wrote my first album,” she reflects of her time living on the coast. “I was working like mad in Brighton when I lived there; I worked in an insurance company, I worked in a sushi restaurant, I worked as an administrator so I was doing loads of temp jobs just to pay the rent. It was a really amazing time in Brighton and I met some amazing people and wrote some great music.”

Born in London, Andreya was a music fiend from day one, shutting herself away in her room writing poetry and songs in her Brixton family home. It’s hard to see if she has changed much since, with her passion for music as evident today, if not more so, than any other musician I have spoken to. With dashes of Amy Winehouse and hints of Nina Simone in her voice it is clear to see where her influence lies. “I loved soul music from the start really; Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill were a massive influence on me.”

It is easy to tell listening to her newest album Giants, which was released in May this year, and has ventured some way from her 2010 debut Lost Where I Belong. As well as switching producers

www.titlesussex.co.uk88 www.titlesussex.co.uk

ANDREYA.indd 2 03/08/2015 18:01

Page 89: TITLE SUSSEX - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

during her five-year hiatus, moving away from her previous work which was connected heavily to Bonobo and now linking up with Matt Hales, she has made an effort to develop musically and personally.

“After the first album I just felt like I really wanted to push myself so I hid myself away for a few years and just kept writing, I wrote about 70 songs in that time. Then we just whittled it down to our favourite few so it really was a labour of love but I’ve really pushed myself hard on this album and I’m really glad I did, it was a great process. It was very intense but it was worthwhile and it’s good to see what you’re made of when you just really keep going.”

Giants is the culmination of her growth during her time away from the spotlight and is just another step along her colourful path. “I feel like it’s bolder, it’s stronger, it’s deeper lyrically and emotionally, and vocally as well so it feels like it’s a big step on in a way; a bit of an evolution.”

She will be singing tracks off both albums at the West Sussex festival and her performance at Hickstead’s All England Jumping Ground will continue her rise to stardom, which has most recently included slots at Glastonbury and on Jools Holland. “I’m really excited, the line-up looks amazing,” she enthused. “I really love the energy at a festival, everyone’s up for it and having a good time and as long as there’s music, booze and outdoors it’s always a good vibe.”

Full of energy, Andreya is a creative force in every sense and when she’s not in the studio or writing lyrics, she’s still inspired to create elsewhere. “When I’m not singing I’m massively into making stuff; I really love sewing bags, I’m really into African fabric, I’m really into style and fashion as well, I also love art, reading and going to the gym - I’m a bit of a gym bunny.”

A style icon in her own right, Andreya’s African-style dress sense is eye-catching and I made sure to get her tip on how to choose your own style. “It’s all about just feeling great in yourself, that is it,” she assured. “Anyone who feels great and is happy in themselves looks amazing to me, that is the most beautiful thing, so just go with what you like and be yourself.”Having progressed so far in such a short space of time it is tough to see where the finish line will be for the 28-year-old but, for those on the start line, she has some words of advice.

“The main thing is to believe in yourself, to value your time and your talent and also to not be scared to get your hands dirty. It’s very hard work and you have to really be persistent and just keep going. I’m learning all the time and the more I learn, the more I realise there’s so much more I don’t know, so I’m constantly trying to improve myself and push myself.”

Ant-Man Scott Land (Rudd) is given a super-suit with the ability to shrink its inhabitant by one of the most highly regarded scientists in the world, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas). Along with the doctor’s daughter, they must save the world.

This film is undoubtedly unique, contradicting scale like we have seen before in Transformers or The Avengers; Ant-Man highlights the scale of a bathtub, or crossing a dance floor without being squished, or riding the tidal wave of water in a small water pipe. This film takes the audience into the nooks and crannies that only ants could get into.

However with all this ingenuity, the characters are stereotyped and are obvious at almost every turn. This therefore reduces the audience’s emotional attachment to these characters and, in turn, means we never stress if the protagonists are in trouble because we know they’ll get out of it and defeat evil. Ant-Man creates a world that we haven’t seen before and takes the audience on a thrill ride on the smallest scale possible.

Ant-Man - 6/10

Here’s our round up of the biggest and best movies to check out at the cinema this month…

Words by Rhys Wilson-Plant

Magic Mike XXLThe film takes place a few years after Magic Mike. Mike has pursued his dream and built his company up doing what he loves, but after rejection from Brooke (Horn) and the pressures of his work becoming to define him, he meets up with his old gang in Tampa and embarks on a road trip to the Stripper Convention (yes, you heard that right!) to finish his dancing career on a bang (pun intended). Magic Mike XXL has turned up the heat from the previous film and gives the audience what they want; bigger parties, more dancing and of course, more heat.

Magic Mike XXL – 6/10

SouthpawFrom Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Equaliser) comes Southpaw, a story about Light-Middleweight champion, Billy Hope, who loses everything and fights to get it back. This is a story of redemption, hope and family. Without a doubt the main attraction for the film is Jake Gyllenhaal, who delivers a fantastic performance that keeps this conventional sport movie fresh and interesting. Many comparisons can be made with one of the boxing originals, Rocky, as Billy pleads to the down and out trainer, Tick Wills (Whittaker) to get him back in the ring and get his daughter back.

A SUMMER CINEMA SELECTION

Ted 2 After Ted marries Tami-Lyn, they decide to have a baby to revive their decaying marriage a year on. However in order to have a child, Ted must prove in a court of law that he is in fact a person and not property. After such a huge hit in the first film of the franchise, hopes were high for this film. But this film strays far from a storyline and instead conveys a story of sketches. Often digressing from the story in hope of a cheap laugh, and laugh we do (out of shock mostly), it nevertheless strays so far at times that we tend to pinch ourselves to remember what the story is about.

PLAYING WITH FIREFor me, nothing beats the primitive thrill of a real flame fire. In our increasingly built-up environments, it’s an excuse to connect with the elements again and go all caveman, or woman. Man’s earliest fire use dates back some 1.8 million years, so it’s deeply ingrained in our evolutionary psyche. The central focal point of any outdoor space, a hearty fire is undeniably mesmerising, and what better way to turn up the heat than with stylish burners and chimineas?

Firepits UK supply both traditional and contemporary metal, giant bowls for chucking your logs into and watching the unkempt blaze. My favourites are the Drumkit Collection, perfect for sitting around in a circle and the Classic collection, which is exactly that, clean lines, no frills. For the designer fire look, go for the sleek, shiny (grade 316) steel round firepit. These guys are the UK’s leading supplier of the Bohemian style Indian fire bowls, sold by many garden centres across the country. The antique fire bowls have an inherent character and metal patination, giving your feature-fire and patio instant boho-chic.

HEATERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOWFirstly, gas heaters are a waste of energy, literally, and they’re ugly. Because hot air rises, nearly all of the warmth they produce (together with some environmentally harmful gas bi-products) floats up into the atmosphere. Their heat output is only around 15-20kWh, which compares poorly with an electric quartz-halogen infrared patio heater, a much better bet.

Sussex-based SunSwitch infrared heaters, which I have often used in courtyard gardens, draw only about a tenth of the energy used by a gas patio heater, so CO2 emissions are correspondingly much lower. They specialise in the supply and install of economical quartz halogen infrared patio heaters which don’t work by heating the air; the radiant warmth is directed only where it is required and it cannot blow away. Bonus! They are 93% efficient at converting electrical power into heat, and for Sussex residents, being a largely coastal county, the best option is their Varma Seaside 2kw Heater, starting at £342 delivered, as its slick stainless steel enclosure and protective Robax glass front can withstand erosive salty environments.

The heart sinks at having to ditch the flip flops as we cruise into autumn. Although we often get an Indian summer with golden days, night can be nippier. Patio heaters, outdoor chimineas and fires are the ideal way to extend the evenings all year round, eking out just a few more weeks of seasonal pleasure hanging out under the stars.

TAKE I T OUTSIDE… WHILST WE’RE ALL FIRED UPChimineas are another convenient option for containing fire and generate heat through a terracotta or cast iron container. The Barn in Sussex have a large showroom and selection and my contemporary choices are the Girse range, with prices from around £2,450, in particular the 195cm tall Duo Exclusive Outdoor Fireplace and Barbeque Type 1. With Scandi-cool styling and handy log storage built in, it adds a bold statement to any outdoor living space. As the metal heats up, the heat will remain long after the last logs have finished burning, but remember the cast iron gets extremely hot, so don’t touch! The Barn also stocks the sassy Italian brand AK47, and their seductive range of firepits are sleek and unique. I love the Zen outdoor fire with its off-centre bowl set in a circle of random stones contained in the metal circle. Also the Ercole with concrete surround seat for perching with a glass of Italian chic statement pieces. Bellissimo!

Table-top or counter-top freestanding fires are popular, but I wouldn’t recommend a gel-fire. They produce little or no heat, and the chemicals in the synthetic gels can produce harmful emissions for the environment.

BUILDING YOUR HEAT…..A built-in vertical fireplace or firewall feature can be designed and built to your specifications if you brief your builder well. Making an architectural statement with a permanent structure means your fire is ever ready for that spontaneous alfresco get-together with friends. Sussex specialists in this field are Alfresco Fires, based near Horsham. Owned by Kiwi Aaron Gaul, (those Kiwis know a thing or two about fires and barbies!) he has some 15 years’ experience building bespoke outdoor fireplaces, and they have a style or suggestion to suit all types of location and property. Ventilation is key at the top to draw the smoke upwards and away from your seating area, and heat-resistant renders are vital. These can be tinted or even painted afterwards if you want a dark brown Moroccan look or perhaps a chic grey edgy urban look to your firewall.

RAKING OVER THE HOT COALS…Using coal or charcoal creates fewer flames and instead produces a steady, intense heat which lasts longer. Osowarm in West Sussex showcase a great Danish brand called Morso. Their lifestyle range, called Morso Living, includes the cute and compact Morso Forno Terra set. Available with a small outdoor table on wheels, it can be wheeled around, even when in use. How clever is that? With a nifty, removable top or chimney for cleaning out the ash, it’s a great outdoor oven too, used for all barbeque foods and even for baking bread.

Their chiminea, called the Kamino, is one of the most elegant shapes there are, and is available with or without a stand. Danish design at its seductive best. Their eco-credentials are impressive at their manufacturing HQ. Their strapline is even ‘Buy it for its looks - love it for its soul‘. How very Danish!

If Scandi is the way for you, check out the

slightly crazy Red Hot Poker, designed by Harrie Leenders. The Takk poker is a

modern high-tech aluminium poker in its most basic form; the branch. It’s a logical idea, inspired by nature. Takk means ‘thank you’ in Norwegian. And a ‘tak’ is a branch

for the Dutch. A branch shaped poker called Takk? A nice way to say…

thank you!

Page 95: TITLE SUSSEX - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

TOP TEN TIPS

1. Natural scents for the fire. Make your own or even forage for a natural item that you can burn in your chiminea or firepit to emit a wonderful fragrance. Thinly slice some apple or orange in rounds, place on ovenproof paper and dry in the oven on a low setting. Then you can burn them in your fire wood/coal mixture. They also make amazing natural firelighters.

2. Alternatively, more musky and seductive smelling is to burn herbs. Dried sage is a not for everyone but I love its strength it clears any other odours from the air, especially cooking smells. Dried sage wands have been used by Native Americans for clearing out negative energy for thousands of years. Simply untie some strands and throw them in at intervals. Rosemary can also be burnt and is lighter and perhaps more aromatic.

3. You can also buy pure fragrance oils in virtually any scent of your choice. Just put a few drops on your branches or logs but you must allow them to dry. Then burn as usual later on.

4. Fire safety tips. Select a firm, level, immovable base for your product. If it’s going on your wooden deck, you need to put it on a cast iron or stone base to get it off the ground. Place it far enough away from the walls of your house in case of flame-drift and heat scorching. Ensure the area above your chiminea or burner is clear of overhanging tree limbs, foliage or awnings and fabric shades.

5. Best to burn in a vertical chiminea are air dried or kiln dried mini logs. They need to be smaller than a conventional log, i.e. 9-14 inches max long, four inches diameter. If the mouth of the chiminea is wider, they can be a little bigger.

6. Do not burn any pressure treated woods as they emit toxic gases when burnt, or any painted woods or varnished woods; they also will emit toxic smoke. Green (not air dried) or wet wood will just create smoke and little heat. Natural wood from a reputable, sustainable supplier is best but needs to be kiln dried with as little as 20% moisture left in it. Try www.logpile.co.uk for news on wood suppliers providing sustainable logs as a heating source. Also www.westsussex.gov.uk/woodlands to find out where to buy wood fuel locally sourced.

7. Make your own eco logs, also known as briquettes. The Eko-Mania Heavy Duty Paper Log Maker is a great one. Making logs or bricks from all your household waste paper they are simple to operate and produce rectangular logs that burn well once fully dried out. It’s free heat from unwanted newspapers, envelopes and junk mail! Only suitable for firepits and fire bowls though. Too big for a chiminea.

8. Exotic woods. If you happen to know any joiners/carpenters, keep your eyes peeled for these beauties… Red Cedar and Pinion Pine both have a nice aroma and keeps the mosquitos away. Mesquite wood, known for its culinary wonder by discerning chefs and cooks, is THE wood for smoking meat and is an excellent cooking wood for those with grill chimineas/burners; but it burns very, very hot, so you need only use a few pieces at a time. Hickory and Juniper wood also flavour any grill-cooking wonderfully.

9. Gas patio heaters and the environment are a big NO! In January 2008, Euro MPs tabled a motion to ban gas patio heaters as part of a drive to cut CO2 emissions as average emissions per gas patio heater are 35kg per annum. They’re noisy, they smell, and these massive, ugly metal mushrooms take up precious patio space. Without annual maintenance and cleaning, they look tatty very quickly. Typical fuel-efficiency of a gas patio heater is only around 65%. They produce very little short wavelength infrared heat, so you literally have to be sitting under or next to one to feel any benefit. Convinced yet?! Use the eco option.

10. Baskets and bags for logs and kindling. There are infinite choices of products to carry your logs and kindling in, from simple wooden pallet boxes to recycled tyre tubs or enamel buckets. I’m loving the great looking waxy-coated bag from a divine stylish supplier Uashmama, a great company with an interesting story and maverick attitude. The bags are made in Italy of 100% natural fibre derived from trees, coloured only with vegetable dyes and they ship worldwide. The combination of tradition, craftsmanship and technology has ensured that the ‘magic’ formula, similar to a tanning of leather, results in an inherently beautiful and tough material. The Wood Bag in grey is my stylish fave.

TRIED AND TRUSTED

Politicians may take first prize in the award for least trusted professionals but following closely behind are estate agents.

Not known for their honesty or helpfulness, estate agents and letting companies potentially hold a lot of power in their hands. Therefore, choosing the right one as a landlord is of paramount importance for a number of reasons. From professionalism to value, you cannot take anything for granted, as Jane Wilkinson, lettings director for Sussex at Leaders, explains.

A ROCKING RAISER

To celebrate their 10th Anniversary in Brighton Baron Estate have raised £5,000 for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity.

After opening their Western Road office last April, which marked their decade in the city, Baron Estate offered customers zero per-cent commission for the first six weeks after opening, saving customers around £4,500, based on an average house price of £300,000. In return they asked home sellers to donate £500 to Rockinghorse after completing their home sale and have now raised the impressive sum. “We’re proud to be able to support Rockinghorse who are an excellent charity in our city,” says Danny Ross, Manager at Baron Estates. “I have had first-hand experience on how the money they raise can really make a difference.”

Baron Estate also continue to donate ten per-cent of all sales commission to the charity.

“Your property is an extremely valuable asset, so firstly it is crucial to pick an agent you can trust. If you make a shrewd choice, a quality agent will help you to enjoy the highest possible return on your investment, provide great tenants and take all the strain out of being a landlord.”

Jane has put together five top tips to help those looking to change agents or considering a buy-to-let investment which you can view on our website at www.titlesussex.co.uk/tried-and-trusted

JACKY JENKINS ON GATWICK...Having lived in Crowborough all my life I have to voice my despair and anger at Gatwick’s treatment of many people who have, up until now, led a peaceful existence in this lovely area. Now we have planes every two minutes immediately overhead, sometimes all day from 6.00am to 10.30pm. I find their arrogance and general attitude to the people of this area quite disgusting and would urge everyone affected to make their voices heard. As you can imagine I would be extremely unhappy if Gatwick was eventually favoured over Heath-row for a second runway. Gatwick implemented changes by the back door with no regard for their neighbours - they should be requested to change back to the previous set-up which wasn’t changed for safety issues, just pure greed to make money by allowing more flights to land. Shame on you Gatwick.
