They understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. They use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child. Key elements 5b. Knowing and using the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines 5c. Using own knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum for each child. InTASC Standard 1: Learner Development The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences. Identify the artifact: This artifact is a lesson plan that I implemented during my Pre-Primary internship in a Kindergarten classroom at Riderwood Elementary. The lesson was a science lesson about the five senses in the spring. The students identified the five senses, then we read the book My Five Senses by Aliki. Next, the students thought about the five senses in the spring and we compiled a list of things that you see, hear, smell, taste and touch specifically in the spring. Afterwards, the children were given the opportunity to practice what they learned through an independent writing activity. The students used sensory words and adjectives to complete the sentence provided. Rationale: I chose to put this lesson into NAEYC Standard 5b and 5c because I believe that I created a positive environment for the student’s growth and development. I incorporated the curriculum, my knowledge and my understanding of the students to create and implement a developmentally appropriate lesson plan. I chose to put this lesson into InTASC Standard 1 because I understand how students in my class grow and develop. I know that each individual child varies in the way they learn and comprehend material and because of this, I used different learning techniques throughout my lesson. Impact on my growth and development: This lesson had a positive impact on my growth as a student teacher. I found out things that work well and things that could be done differently. For this lesson, I used an idea from the curriculum and I incorporated other resources and my own knowledge to come up with a meaningful lesson in which the students could relate. This lesson is proof that children learn best when they can relate learning to real life experiences. Impact on my students: During this lesson, I observed my students actively engaging in the activity. The page 1 / 2

NAEYC Standard 5: Using Content Knowledge to Build Meaningful CurriculumCandidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines todesign, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each andevery young child. They understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content)disciplines in early childhood curriculum. Key elements5b. Knowing and using the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academicdisciplines

5c. Using own knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum for each child.

InTASC Standard 1: Learner DevelopmentThe teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning anddevelopment vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physicalareas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Identify the artifact: This artifact is a lesson plan that I implemented during my Pre-Primary internshipin a Kindergarten classroom at Riderwood Elementary. The lesson was a science lesson about the fivesenses in the spring. The students identified the five senses, then we read the book My Five Senses byAliki. Next, the students thought about the five senses in the spring and we compiled a list of things thatyou see, hear, smell, taste and touch specifically in the spring. Afterwards, the children were given theopportunity to practice what they learned through an independent writing activity. The students usedsensory words and adjectives to complete the sentence provided.

Rationale: I chose to put this lesson into NAEYC Standard 5b and 5c because I believe that I created apositive environment for the student’s growth and development. I incorporated the curriculum, myknowledge and my understanding of the students to create and implement a developmentally appropriatelesson plan. I chose to put this lesson into InTASC Standard 1 because I understand how students in myclass grow and develop. I know that each individual child varies in the way they learn and comprehendmaterial and because of this, I used different learning techniques throughout my lesson.

Impact on my growth and development: This lesson had a positive impact on my growth as a studentteacher. I found out things that work well and things that could be done differently. For this lesson, I usedan idea from the curriculum and I incorporated other resources and my own knowledge to come up with ameaningful lesson in which the students could relate. This lesson is proof that children learn best whenthey can relate learning to real life experiences.

Impact on my students: During this lesson, I observed my students actively engaging in the activity. The

students were eager to raise their hands especially when they were able to stand in front of the classroom.Every child had the opportunity to discuss their ideas at least to a partner during turn and talk. There wasauthentic learning that took place on the playground after my lesson, which showed that the studentsreally understood the concepts.
