Youth Apprenticeship: First experience with hands-on workStudent Employer

YA Coordinator

• Engages in Academic and Career Planning (ACP), especially during freshman and sophomore years

• Applies for YA opportunity in their Career Cluster of interest

• Gathers reference letters, prepares for interviews

• Contacts YA Coordinator with interest in hiring YAs – or – coordinator recruits employer through outreach activities

• Coordinator meets to explain requirements of YA program

• Employer identifies mentors, outlines a plan of work, prepares to interview

• Gathers applications from students, matches with interested employers

• Sets up interviews between employers and students

• Signs Education/Training Agreement once student is hired

During the Program:

• Employer and Coordinator evaluate student at least three times per year

• By final evaluation, student must achieve 450 work hours, two semesters of instruction, and all competencies in YA Checklist

Completion

Coordinator signs off on YA Checklist and DWD issues Certificate of

Completion. Student may continue into immediate employment, post-

secondary education, Registered Apprenticeship, or anywhere else

If student interest is higher than employer need, coordinator will focus on employer recruitment.

If employer need is higher than student interest, coordinator will work with school to recruit more students.

Recruitment and hiring process

• Students are recruited and placed with jobs by YA Coordinator

• In some cases, students may find their own jobs

• Students must interview with employer

• The sponsor conducts recruitment

• Sponsor selects qualified applicants

• Apprenticeships often given to existing employees

Based on evaluation, an employer might award:• Higher placement on an apprenticeship waiting list• Immediate entry into Registered Apprenticeship, where other

employees would have a pre-apprenticeship or other trial period• Partial or full credit for On-the-Job Learning (OJL) hours done as a

Youth Apprentice, leading to an advance on the skilled wage progression

• Partial or full credit for Related Instruction (RI) hours done during Youth Apprenticeship
