What is the Meaning of Self-Esteem? A DefinitionSelf-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth.

According to self-esteem expert Morris Rosenberg, self-esteem is quite simply one’s attitude toward oneself (1965). He described it as a “favourable or unfavourable attitude toward the self”.

Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying "The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it."

Self-Confidence: Is the ability to do things.

Self-image: refers to how we see ourselves on a more global level, both internally and externally.

Self-image resulting from how an individual sees oneself.

Self-image resulting from how others see the individual.

Self-image resulting from how the individual perceives others see them.

•There are certain characteristics that distinguish how healthy someone’s self-esteem is.

•Examples of these characteristics are being open to criticism,

•acknowledging mistakes,

•being comfortable with giving and receiving compliments.

•displaying a harmony between what one says, does, looks, sounds, and moves.

•People with high self-esteem are unafraid to show their curiosity, discuss their experiences, ideas, and opportunities. They can also enjoy the humorous aspects of their lives and are comfortable with social or personal assertiveness.

•Positive outlook

•Taking responsibility

•Ability to see overall strengths and weaknesses and accept them and improving weak points.

You may need to work on how you perceive yourself if you exhibit any of these signs of poor self-esteem:

•Negative outlook

•Lack of confidence

•Inability to express their needs

•Focus on their weaknesses

•Excessive feelings of shame, depression, or anxiety

•Belief that others are better than you
