Tips and Tricks Getting to Know your

Engraving Cutters November 20, 2012

Anatomy of an Engraving Cutter

Choosing the right cutter width

Cutter width is selected based on character height and font style. In general, single stroke characters should

have a stroke width that is approximately 12% of the character height.

For example, a quarter inch (.250") letter should have a .030" tip (.250" × .12 = .030"). It may be desirable

however to decrease tip width on condensed fonts and increase it on extended ones so the appearance is

more proportional.

Tips and Tricks Getting to Know your Engraving Cutters

* When scribing light metals like Aluminum and Brass, the XY feed rates should be set slower as to not generate excessive heat and cause metal to ripple.

When scribing harder metals, faster speeds can be used.

** When engraving depth into metal it is recommended to use a machining oil to wipe the metal with. This will act as a lubricant and coolant for the tool. Also a spiral flute cutter should be used (sold by Antares).

*** Requires the use of an 11/64" Burnishing attachment, not sold by Roland.

NOTE: These settings are provided as a guide and users should experiment with their own materials to find the best settings to use. It is recommended to start conservatively and work your way from there.
