FeatureSTORY

In the abrasives market, right an-gle grinders have traditionally beenused in conjunction with grindingwheels, fiber discs, wire brushes,

and flap discs. Over the last severalyears, non-woven abrasives have en-

tered the field, replacing traditionalcoated abrasives as a faster and more

cost effective method of stripping, debur-ring, blending, prepping and finishing.

What are non-woven abrasives? They have three compo-nents: synthetic fiber mesh, quality abrasives, and resin. The density

other abrasive products. To understand thedifferences among types of non-woven rightangle products, a simple review can provehelpful:

Stripping wheels are quite recognizable

of the mesh and the size and type of theabrasive used, provides an array of combi-nations that give non-woven right angleproducts not only a great deal of versatilitybut also unique attributes not available in

by their very coarse, open mesh structure. They are ideal for stripping paint and coat-ings, without affecting the base metal. Theopen structure resists loading, enabling itto strip even the gummiest of substanceslike seam sealer and adhesives.

Norton’s new Blaze Rapid Strip wheelis an upgraded version of the traditionalblack stripping product. Unlike its blacksilicon carbide counterpart, Blaze RapidStrip uses ceramic alumina grain.

This makes it faster cutting and longerlasting, a better choice for strippingrough rust and scale off of metal partswhile still being flexible enough to avoidgouging the base material. This is avery versatile product for stripping, cleaning, and blending.

Finishing wheels have a much tighterweave, making for a firm product excel-lently suited for removing light welds, deburring rough metal edges, andblending/cleaning all metal surfaces. The abrasive grain of choice for mostmetalworking operations is aluminum

oxide, which is generally offered inmedium and fine grit for metal removaland deburring. For light pressure fin-ishing operations, a very fine siliconcarbide is generally recommended.

Recently, a new high performanceengineered aluminum oxide grain (Nor-ton Vortex) was introduced. This grainhas a unique feature in that it is alarger grain built out of many small

abrasive grains (industry term is “ag-glomerate”). This revolutionary tech-nology allows for an aggressive cutand fast stock removal, while provid-ing a fine finish. The cooler cuttinggrain provides twice the wheel lifeover conventional aluminum oxide.

The last product in the non-wovenright angle family is a prepping wheel. You will notice the more open weave ofthe non-woven material. This may befamiliar to most users as it was the orig-inal structure of most non-woven prod-ucts. It is an excellent product for surfacepreparation, cleaning, and finishing. Theprepping wheel is available in a de-pressed center wheel configuration witha fiberglass back-up pad or, when moreconformability is needed, as a disc thatattaches to a rubber back up pad.

The prepping discs are also availablein the unique AVOS design, which al-lows the operator to view the surface ofthe material while working, in order tomore accurately gauge the operation,

• Elimination of loading withsoft materials

• Less vibration for moreoperator comfort

• Elimination of safety issues thatcan occur with wire brushes anddislodged wiresMost products in the non-woven cat-

specialized industrial hygiene monitoringof dusts, fumes and gases. All pumps incor-porate a proven efficient double-acting di-aphragm mechanism with precise digitalcontrol. This gives the user excellent realtime flow control and stability across awide range of sampling media. Pump op-eration is guided by an intuitive user inter-face displaying real time flow, sampledvolume with run duration, as well as a sim-ple battery “fuel gauge” and alarm for flowor battery fault conditions. IntrinsicallySafe (IS) models are available for use inhazardous locations.

Safety and health professionals can spec-ify the features they need by selecting thestandard model, the TUFF Plus, or TUFFPro. By choosing a 1.7 or 2.7 Ah batterypack, 3 or 4.5 L/min maximum flow rate ca-pacity the user can optimize performanceand price to meet their exact needs. EveryTUFF pump uses detachable and field-swappable NiMH battery packs ensuringmaximum uptime. Typical run times ofmore than 30 hours (depending on mediaand flow rate) make them the perfectchoice for longer sampling periods. CasellaTUFF air sampling pumps meet applicableNIOSH and EN requirements for personalsampling pumps. Casella offers a full line ofaccessories including sampling heads, im-pingers, filter media, and sorbent tubes, plus rotameters and calibrators for flow ver-ification ensuring compliance with ac-cepted sampling methodologies.

Apollo Fire Detectors’ new OpenConnect Gate-way® fully integrates fire detection with buildingmanagement systems (BMS), without the need

for complex systems or the use of multiple customizedinterfaces. The OpenConnect Gateway is effectively a ‘plug and

and end users the advantage of utilizingan intra-system communication archi-tecture between both environments, while maintaining the integrity of eachsystem independently. The benefits in-clude faster response times, coordina-tion strategies, and utilization ofpre-planned and/or pre-programmedevacuation procedures in case of emer-gency or times of failure. Because thegateway is an integral part of the firecontrol panel, it is also simple to installand configure reducing the associatedtime and costs when implemented intoprojects.

At the heart of the hardware is theTridium JACE®, designed in conjunctionwith the well-established Niagara AXFramework®, to provide easy physicalintegration to a host of established net-works.

The versatility of the OpenConnectstandard allows participating fire panelpartners to adopt and seamlessly inte-grate their equipment into buildingmonitoring, automation and control sys-tems using the gateway. Through itsPanel Partnership, Apollo has alreadyworked closely with leading panel man-ufacturers to develop panel-to-BMS in-terfaces, and will continue to do so asfuture licensed partners come onboardand develop suitable connections to thegateway hardware.

The new gateway will be available infour base models that reflect the num-ber of configured points exposed withinthe BMS environment (200, 1600, 12000and 25000). Each OpenConnect Gate-way includes two standard Ethernetports, an RS232 port, and a 15V DC in-put. Additional plug-in I/O slots are alsoavailable if needed for other connectors, such as LON adapters.
