The Windows 7 Disk Management tool provides a simple interface for managing partitions and

    volumes.

Heres an easy way to create a new partition on your disk.

    1. Open the Disk Management console by typing diskmgmt.msc at an elevated command

    prompt.

    2. In Disk Managements Graphical view, right-click an unallocated or free area, and thenclick New Simple Volume. This starts the New Simple Volume Wizard. (Note: If you

need to create unallocated space, see the Tip Easily Shrink a Volume on a Windows 7

Diskfor information on how to do this.)

    3. Read the Welcome page and then click Next.

    4. The Specify Volume Size page specifies the minimum and maximum size for the

volume in megabytes and lets you size the volume within these limits. Size the partition

in megabytes using the Simple Volume Size field and then click Next.

    5. On the Assign Drive Letter Or Path page, specify whether you want to assign a drive

letter or path and then click Next. The available options are as follows:

Assign The Following Drive Letter Select an available drive letter in the selection list

provided. By default, Windows 7 selects the lowest available drive letter and excludesreserved drive letters as well as those assigned to local disks or network drives.

Mount In The Following Empty NTFS Folder Choose this option to mount the

partition in an empty NTFS folder. You must then type the path to an existing folder or

click Browse to search for or create a folder to use.

Do Not Assign A Drive Letter Or Drive Path Choose this option if you want to create

the partition without assigning a drive letter or path. Later, if you want the partition to

be available for storage, you can assign a drive letter or path at that time.

    6. Use the Format Partition page to determine whether and how the volume should be

formatted. If you want to format the volume, choose Format This Volume With The

Following Settings, and then configure the following options:

    3/13

File System Sets the file system type as FAT, FAT32, or NTFS. NTFS is selected by

default in most cases. If you create a file system as FAT or FAT32, you can later

convert it to NTFS by using the Convert utility. You cant, however, convert NTFS

    partitions to FAT or FAT32.

Allocation Unit Size Sets the cluster size for the file system. This is the basic unit in

which disk space is allocated. The default allocation unit size is based on the size of the

volume and, by default, is set dynamically prior to formatting. To override this feature,

you can set the allocation unit size to a specific value. If you use many small files, you

might want to use a smaller cluster size, such as 512 or 1,024 bytes. With these settings,

small files use less disk space.

Volume Label Sets a text label for the partition. This label is the partitions volumename and by default is set to New Volume. You can change the volume label at any

time by right-clicking the volume in Windows Explorer, choosing Properties, and

typing a new value in the Label field provided on the General tab.

Perform A Quick Format Tells Windows 7 to format without checking the partition

for errors. With large partitions, this option can save you a few minutes. However, its

usually better to check for errors, which enables Disk Management to mark bad sectors

on the disk and lock them out.

Enable File And Folder Compression Turns on compression for the disk. Built-in

compression is available only for NTFS. Under NTFS, compression is transparent to

users and compressed files can be accessed just like regular files. If you select this

option, files and directories on this drive are compressed automatically.

    OPTION ONE

Using Disk Management1. You will first need toshrink a partition or volume from the free space on a disk to create

unallocated space on that disk to use to create the new partition or volume with on the same

disk.NOTE: If this is a new HDD that is allunallocatedspace, then you can skip this step and go

    straight to step 2.

    2. Open theControl Panel (All Items view), and click on the Administrative Tools icon. then

    close the Control Panel window.

    3. Click on Computer Management in Administrative Tools, then close the Administrative

    Tools window.

    4. In the left pane underStorage, click on Disk Management. (See screenshot below)

    5. In the middle pane, right click on the empty unallocated partition or volume and click on

New Simple Volume. (See screenshot above)

    6. Click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)

    7. Type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) you want to use from the unallocated partition to

create the new partition with, then click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)

NOTE:If you want to use all of the unallocated partition to create the new partition with, then

type all of the maximum disk space shown for the unallocated partition. If you do not use all of

the maximum disk space, then you can use the left over space from the unallocted partition to

    create another new partition with.

    8. Select an available drive letter that you want to be assigned to the new partition in Computer,

then click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)

    9. Type in a volume label name that you want for the new partition, check the Perform a

quick format box, and click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)

    10. Click on the Finishbutton. (See screenshot below)

    Warning

If you get a pop-up with the message below, then click on No. You DO NOT want to convert

the disk to dynamic. Doing so could render Windows 7 unbootable. A clean install of Windows

7 would be the only way to fix this afterwards if you were to click on Yes.

    Quote:

The operation selected will convert the disk to dynamic... are you sure you want to continue?

    11. The new primary partition or volume has now been created with the assigned unallocted

partition space (step 7). (See screenshot below)

    12. Close the Computer Management window. (See screenshot above)

    OPTION TWO

Using Diskpart in a Elevated Command Prompt1. You will first need toshrink a partition or volume to create a unallocated partition to use

to create the new partition or volume with.

    2. Open aelevated command prompt, or a command prompt at boot.

    3. In the elevated command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter. (See screenshot below)

    4. In the elevated command prompt, type list diskand press Enter. (See screenshot below)

NOTE:This is to help you ID the disk number that has Free unallocated space that you wantto create a new partition with. For example, Disk 1 with 80 GB of free space.

    5. In the elevated command prompt, type select disk# and press Enter. (See screenshot below)

NOTE:You would substitute # for the disk number listed that you want to create a new

partition with the free unallocated space there. For example, I want to create a new partition

with the 80 GB of free space, so I would type select disk 2 and press Enter.

    6. In the elevated command prompt, type create partition primary and press Enter. (See

    screenshot below)

NOTE: This will create a new blankRAW partition with selected disk (step 5) that contains

    the unallocated partition free space.

    7. In the elevated command prompt, type list volume and press Enter. (See screenshot below)

NOTE:Look for the volume numberthat has the sameSize as from the Free space in step 4.

    For example, Volume 3.

    8. To Format the Partition or Disk as a NTFS File System

NOTE:This would be good for using with a HDD as an example.

    A) In the elevated command prompt, type format fs=ntfs quickand press Enter. (See

    screenshot below)

NOTE:Havingquickadded at the end of the command will do a quick format instead of a full

format on the new blank RAW partition (step 6) to make it a new partition.

    B) Go to step 10.

    9. To Format the Partition or Disk as a FAT32 File System

NOTE:This would be good for using with a USB key drive as an example. The FAT32file

system has size limitations. You cannot create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 GB. In

addition, you cannot store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition. For more information,

see Comparing NTFS and FAT file systems.

    A) In the elevated command prompt, type format fs=fat32 quickand press Enter. (See

    screenshot below)

NOTE:Havingquickadded at the end of the command will do a quick format instead of a full

format on the new blank RAW partition (step 6) to make it a new partition.

    10. When it is finished formatting, type exit in the elevated command prompt and press Enter.

    (See screenshot below)

    11. Close the elevated command prompt.

    12. The new primary partition has now been created. You can now see the new partition in

    Computer with a drive letter.

    5. Now right clickon the drive and select Shrink Volume

    6. You will then be presented with a Window showing you the Size of the Hard drive and

the total amount available to Shrink. Since my hard drive is quite full I have a smaller

amount available to Shrink.Enter in the amount you would like to shrink ( This will be

the size of the new partition ) It cant be more than the amount available to you and

remember that Approx 1000 Mb = 1 GB

    7. After you have entered your values, clickshrinkand let it do its thing. Depending on

the size of the drive and amount to shrink this could take a while. Just be patient andonce its done you will see an unallocated space which is the size you just shrunk the

volume by. Select it and right clickand then select New Simple Volume

    8. Follow the Wizard that appears and fill in the Size of the Partition, Generally the size

you just shrunk the drive by.

    9. Assign a drive letter, Pick one of your choice it doesnt make a difference
