Some people find that when they clench their jaw or press on the face or neck, they cantemporarily relieve their tinnitus, or bring it on. Brining this research to APM style acupuncture, one might look to these muscles in the jaw and neck to see if there are constriction and trigger points in the musculature that may be causing the tinnitus.First one would decide which zone was involved and which zang fu if any. In this style onewould utilize a method of trigger point technique and look for the tight and tender muscles thatare reactive.Tinnitus is often due to a deficiency of the kidneys; there is never an excess problem in thekidneys. Since Jing and Essence, which are stored in the kidneys, are given at birth and thenslowly deplete, you cannot have too much. Being that the kidneys are the root of the Yin andYang organs, one must take into account the effects a kidney deficiency will have on other organs when they do their treatment.Deficiency of Kidney Yin happens when the kidney water is exhausted with empty fire. Thepatient will look too thin and have a dry throat, tinnitus, hot flashes, night sweat, red tongue, weak back, loss of hearing, premature ejaculation, forgetfulness and vertigo. This often happens when the Yin is not strong enough to warm the body and it can no longer perform the functions of separating the clear from the turbid fluids. Therefore you will see a lotof body fluid retention, dribbling after urination and incontinence.Tinnitus can be related to a deficiency of Kidney Yin with Rising Liver Fire as well. The Liver needs moisture from the Kidneys and when this water is deficient the Liver Fire may rise.Symptoms of this condition would be insomnia, irritability, headaches, dizziness, red face andeyes, deafness and tinnitus.

Palpatory Findings If one suspected the gallbladder and triple heater meridians were involved, a Shao Yangtreatment would be used. The temporalis, upper trapezius, latissimus dorsi, upper and lower external obliques, TFL, ITB, Vastus lateralis, peroneals, and ring finger extensors couldpossibly have constrictio n and trig ger poi nts.

Treatment The Jing level point s u s ed w ould be GB26-28 and GB41 and TH5. For the Ying level, points likeBL14, BL18, LV14-PC1, CV17, CV18 and LV1,2 and 3, and PC 7 and 8 can be used. As for theWei level, you can release trigger points or tight muscles in the constricted Shao Yang Zone. You can also use points like TI10, SI8 , LV14-PC1, GB41, GB34, 38 and 39.Palpatory Findings If upon palpation you decided that Tai Yang was more involved, you would do more points onthe Kidney and Bladder meridians. In this case there would be constriction in muscles like theoccipitals, upper trapezius, levator scapula, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, teres major andminor, rhomboids, paraspinals, multifidi, quadratus lumborum, gluteals, piriformis and

    hamstrings.

Treatment For Wei level, you can use release the constricted Tai Yang muscles and do points like BL59,SI8 and BL 58 1/2.You can then work on the Ying level by using points like BL23-52, BL14-43, CV23, KI1, 2 and3, and Ht 7 or 8. As for the Jing level, you can use BL10 and BL 40 or SI3 and BL 62.

rea men ra eg es Once trigger points in the muscles are found, you can begin to release them. You can trap thetight tender points with fingers from the left hand and needle with the right. You do not put toomuch pressure on the muscle or too little so you loose it. You generally do not need to go verydeep into the muscle to elicit a trigger point response as long as you are in the right area. Youpeck the muscle without twirling it, and keep in mind to peck the muscle at varies speeds sothe muscle does not get used to a rhythm. One the twitching dies down or stops you can leavethe needle in no more than a quarter of an inch and move on.

Patient Reccomendations Patients may be told to stay away from excessively loud noises and avoid the repetitive strainthey are causing on their bodies by doing movements or activities that continue to constrictthem. Exercise, stretching and relaxation may help.
