Board Elects New President

By Steven D. Harris, President

Looking through an old church hymnal recently, I came across the song

“How Firm a Foundation.” Like many people, I had been exposed to that beautiful old hymn as a child. But I really had no context for the history of the song. Intrigued by the implications of that title, I dug deeper.

I learned that the tune and lyrics date from 1787, shortly after our new nation was born. The hymn has been a popular one in America ever since. Churches both North and South sang it during the Civil War. It was sung during the funerals of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson as well as Robert E. Lee.

That beautiful tune is still being sung today. While the focus obviously is on things spiritual, the message is universal: the importance of building on a firm foun-dation. The same observation applies to our labors of love at Historic Christ Church– we are building on a firm foundation!

Like many nonprofit and historical organizations, the Foundation for Historic Christ Church has endured its share of challenges recently. But we enter 2017 and the years ahead in better shape than many similar organizations, thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff, volunteers and financial supporters. On behalf of the Foundation and its board, I especially want to thank John Bowden, our immediate past presi-dent, for his leadership the past two years.

Going forward, with your help and support, we will build on recent initiatives, including development of new interpretive programs for children; creation of a speaker’s bureau to enhance community outreach; increased partnerships with local and state-wide historical orga-nizations; developing a “bottoms-up” approach to budgeting, with greater input from committees to identify and fund mission-critical activities; expanding our financial support through planned giving and grant writing; and of course

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CHURCH

A FIRM FOUNDATIONHCC&M volunteer Julie Rottkamp and her husband Bill join Andrea Wulf after her talk.

At our 59th Annual Meeting held on May 18, 2017 our members elected new directors to the Board and recognized retiring directors. Joining the Board is Michael W. Bombay, John H. Hunt, II, Katherine Foster Muller, and Jill M. Worth. Retiring directors include

Ersel Buckley-Sharp, John K. O’Shaughnessy and R. Lee Stephens, Jr.The Board of Directors met immediately after the Annual Meeting and elected a new slate of officers: Steven D. Harris, President,

Jill M. Worth, Vice-President, John H. Hunt, II, Treasurer and Elizabeth J. Otley Secretary. The following articles are from our incoming and outgoing presidents.

By John Bowden, Past President

From its early years, the church quickly outgrew its space to accommodate all

who worshipped here. Around the 1750s a balcony was added to seat even more worshippers. The church has seen ministers come and go, like the first two to serve in it, John Bell and David Currie.

The 1800s saw periods of neglect, disrepair, and disuse. In 1836-1838 the first major preservation work took place. Workmen replaced the original cypress shingled roof with new cypress shingles. Again, in 1897 the roof was replaced but this time with slate shingles.

With all the changes the building has been through since 1735, I feel the church has come full circle and returned to its “Glory” days. Although Sunday services

We are indeed building on a firm foundation at Historic Christ Church. These are exciting times, and I am fired

up and ready to go! Please join me in continuing to support this great organization. I welcome feedback and input, so feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions at: [email protected].

Education Programs in Full Swing at HCC&M

The Northern Neck History Fair celebrated its 17th year in 2017. Third and fourth grade students from several local schools enter by creating exhibits on Colonial and Revolutionary Virginia. The winning entries earn cash prizes courtesy of the fair’s annual sponsors: Bank of Lancaster and Bay Trust, Chesapeake Bank, Connemara Corporation and Anna’s Pizza of Kilmarnock. Shown here are the 2017 participants with HCC&M Curator Robert Teagle (far left) and Bay Trust President & CEO Eric Nost.

Each year HCC&M reaches over 1,000 students through field trips and outreach programs. On field trips, School Programs Volunteers lead a variety of hands-on stations that teach children about Christ Church’s

history and architecture. Students draw the building’s different architectural features, learn to mold bricks by hand, and explore the church’s interior, where they make grave rubbings. In the museum they become “under-takers,” or builders, by constructing a brick wall and an arch with a keystone. Sometimes these young historians even drill in a Continental Army muster and try on colonial clothing.

In our outreach program “Archaeology in the Classroom,” students excavate shoebox sites to find (reproduction) artifacts like pipe stems, ceramics, Native American points, and coin pieces. Children love getting their hands dirty while uncovering the past!

Summer time brings high school students from around the country to visit as part of William and Mary’s National Institute for American History and Democracy program (NIAHD). Every July HCC&M hosts a Teachers’ Workshop in partnership with Rappahannock Community College’s Regional Education Consortium. Summer is also time for our annual Hands-On History Day and Ice Cream Social.

Sophie Rountree, a 9th great-granddaughter of Christ Church’s builder Robert “King” Carter, was one of more than 40 children who enjoyed HCC&M’s annual Ice Cream Social in August. Along with lemonade and ice cream favorites, the kids dressed in colonial costumes, played and made their own colonial games, excavated model archaeological digs, and wrote with quill pens. Here Sophie challenges her dad Brian to a game of draughts (checkers).

FIELD TRIPS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Thanks to a generous grant from volunteer Susan Stuart, HCC&M is producing an orien-tation video for school and summer programs. The video targets K-5 graders and will feature volunteer Kathie Galgano’s granddaughter Hailey Didion as the narrator. The film contrasts life in 18th-century Virginia with life today and highlights Christ Church’s architecture and the history of its construc-tion. HCC&M has contracted with Vaughan Crittenden from Riverdale 24 Productions to produce the film.

CHILDREN’S VIDEO IN PRODUCTION

Students from the College of William and Mary’s National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD) tour Historic Christ Church & Museum every July. NIAHD is a partnership between William and Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Students visit historic buildings, museums, and archaeological sites to learn about colonial Virginia and the way these sites present history to the public. The interdisciplinary program engages students with material culture, behind the scenes tours of historic sites, and close interaction with curators, historians, archaeologists and museum professionals. NIAHD students have been visiting Historic Christ Church & Museum for more than 15 years.

Students love excavating these model archaeological sites to learn about life in 18th-century Virginia.

A 1st-grade student from Botetourt Elementary in Gloucester holds parts of a Spanish coin known as a piece of eight. These reproduc-tion artifacts give kids a chance to explore the material culture of colonial Virginia.

Making bricks by hand is always a fun part of field trips to Historic Christ Church & Museum.

Anne Davis never thought her back-ground in public health care would

lead her into the world of 18th-century Virginia. In 2011 Anne was a new member of the HCC&M Research Committee. That fall she joined fellow volunteers for a “Parish Crawl,” one of our semi- annual continuing education trips to other historic sites in Virginia.

This crawl traveled to Colonial Williamsburg, where Anne found inspi-ration in a proclamation read at the Governor’s Palace. Authored by Robert “King” Carter, then Acting Governor of the colony, the April 21, 1727 decree announced a day of penitence and prayer because a terrible pestilence had overtaken Virginia. “I was blown away when I heard the proclamation,” Anne recalled. “I never realized how poor health could stop a colony in its tracks and that the powerful Robert Carter was completely helpless.”

After docent Tom Hay finished reading it, Anne asked him for a copy. Tom gave her the copy in hand and the project was born in that moment.

At the next few meetings of the Research Committee, members proved very interested and supportive. Sue Rogers, who spent three decades on the committee, volunteered to go with Anne to conduct research at William & Mary. “Sue encouraged me to do what interested

Among the objects on display in the Carter Reception Center museum is a

gold watch made by renowned watch and clockmaker Thomas Tompion of England. Born in Bedfordshire in 1639, Tompion apprenticed to a London clockmaker when he was 25. A decade later, Tompion set up shop at The Dial and Three Crowns at Fleet Street, where he produced over 650 clocks and 5,500 watches until his death in 1713.

Historic Christ Church & Museum’s Tom-pion watch, signed and numbered by the maker, dates to 1711-1713 and is 22 carat gold. Robert “King” Carter gave the watch to his daughter Elizabeth, who in 1724 married Dr. George Nicholas of Williams-burg. The watch descended through the Nicholas family until it was purchased by Robert Hill Carter II, who left it to his son Beirne Blair Carter. Beirne Carter and his daughter Mary Ross Carter Hutcheson loaned the watch to HCC&M in 1976 for display in the museum.

Few colonial Virginians could afford such an item. Retired Colonial Williamsburg curator Graham Hood says the watch speaks to Robert Carter’s status as the most powerful Virginian of his day:

“It never occurred to me that a Virginian of that time would be up to the level of such an upscale consumer item until I saw the gold pocket watch that “King” Carter had owned, now on display at the Carter family museum at Christ Church, Lancaster County. A rich and heavy object, it says more about the social posture and ambition of that man than almost anything else I know.”

Regarded as the “Father ofEnglish Clockmaking,” Thomas Tompion (1639-1713) is buried at

The Lloyd T. Smith & Ashlin W. Smith Research Library focuses on the

history of Christ Church, Christ Church Parish, the Carter family and Lancaster County within the broader context of colonial Virginia. The library houses scholarly journals and collections including the William and Mary Quarterly, the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, the laws of Virginia from Hening’s Statutes at Large, the Journals of the House of Burgesses and Minutes of the Council and General Court of Colonial Virginia.

Created and maintained by the volunteer members of HCC&M’s Research Committee, the library offers fascinating research files on people who lived in Christ Church Parish during the colonial

me,” Anne remembers. “I was new to the Research Committee and would never have ventured into something that was not on anyone’s agenda without the Committee’s encouragement.”

Anne quickly learned that distempers were illnesses or diseases and physic was the effort to treat them. She poured through Carter’s journals as well as those of James Gordon, a prominent merchant-planter in mid-18th century Lancaster County, for descriptions of disease and medicine. In the pages of the Virginia Gazette, Anne found accounts of conniving quacks and male midwives, sicknesses from typhoid fever to smallpox, and treatments that included snake root and bloodletting.

In short articles for the HCC&M newsletter, Anne documented a few of her more interesting discoveries, such as an enslaved man named Papaw who in 1729 was granted freedom because he discovered a cure for a prevalent disease. As her research grew, Anne assembled her articles into a manuscript, constantly adding new findings and storylines and sharing her work with committee members who read and edited the work.

This spring, hundreds of words and hours of research later, Anne’s article appeared in the 2016 Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine.

In the end, Anne says the project was “most definitely a group effort. The help and encouragement from others who had no prior interest in colonial health-care but were willing to give me time and assistance urged me on throughout the process.” Congratulations to Anne for publishing this impressive piece of research and teaching us all about the vagaries of medicine and healthcare during Robert Carter’s day.

in Christ Church Parish ca. 1750, the size and location of their landholdings, and important parish landmarks such as mills, warehouses and the race grounds.

Volunteers also maintain an electronic database of descendants of Robert “King” Carter and Thomas Carter. Volunteers assist researchers trying to establish a connection with a particular line of descendants, and they expand and correct the database as researchers share new information about these descendants.

While HCC&M’s research library holds

only a few original manuscripts, it has a number of copies and transcriptions of original documents related to the parish and the Carter family. The library also has an extensive collection of historic photographs of Christ Church, with the earliest dating to the 1880s.

The library is available to the public year round by appointment. In the past year, researchers travelled from states as far as Illinois, Arizona, and California to use, what they termed, “a wonderful resource.”

Preservation Notes: Rising DampOne of the most common preservation challenges historic buildings face is rising

damp. Documented by Vitruvius as early as the first century BC, rising damp is the process where water moves vertically and horizontally into brick or stone before evaporating from exposed wall surfaces, leaving stain or “tide” marks.

Christ Church tried twice in the 20th century to combat rising damp: in 1933 by parging the interior face of each wall with Portland cement from the bottom of the crawl space to the top of the pews and in 1967 by installing a brick splash around the base of the church. But because nothing was done to remove the sources of ground water, rising damp continued.

Rising damp’s most visible effect at Christ Church is the failure of mortar joints, particularly along the walls between the south and west doorways. FHCC has repointed these areas at least three times (1981, 2000, 2007).

To address this problem long term, FHCC has begun to explore ways to draw water away from the building through drainage systems around the perimeter of the church. This will be FHCC’s preservation priority over the next two years.
