The City of St. CharlesParks and RecreationDepartment serves their

residents and visitors with 23parks that cover more than 800acres. This September, they areinviting us to join in their 100-year anniversary celebration.The festival, held at Frontier Park,is called “Illumination” and willrun from Friday, September 12ththrough the Monday, September15 at Frontier Park in St. Charles.The park will be ablaze with col-ored light decorations and glowlight merchandise to bathe the areain the dazzling light.

Maralee M. Britton, Directorof St. Charles Parks andRecreation recently sent out astatement to explain the signifi-cance and excitement the eventpromises: "The St. Charles Parksand Recreation Department isproud to be celebrating 100 yearsof service to the community.Illumination is our way of thank-ing the community for being apart of our great heritage,” shesaid.

“We would not be where weare without the support of our res-idents going back to 100 years agowhen they petitioned the CityCouncil for the bond to purchaseBlanchette Park. We look forwardto continuing that amazing part-nership for the next 100 years.”

Activities and Fun For All AgesIt would seem that providing

us with great parks would be atreat in itself, but the IlluminationFestival is pulling out all the stopsto make this a weekend befittingthe history and pride of both theParks Department and its relation-ship with residents and visitors.Beginning Friday, Sept 12, the St.Charles Parks & RecreationFoundation will kick off the week-end with the ILLUMIRUN 5K atFrontier Park. The course will belit; runners are encouraged to addto the effect with their own glowitems. It begins at 7:30pm.Pre-registration is required and canbe accessed through theFoundation website at

www.stcharlesparksfoundation.org.Saturday, an opening ceremonywill be conducted at 11am at theJaycee Stage, followed by aChildren’s Bike Parade. The eventis free (with registration), and kidsare encouraged to decorate theirbikes. Register ahead atwww.stcharlesparks.com or on theday of the event.

From there, the entire weekendof Illumination will be a cornu-copia of live music, premiumamusement rides, children's activi-ties, games, a car show, food andbeverages and more.

Music, games and prizes will bepowered by Radio Disney St.Louis from noon to 2 pm onSaturday. Food trucks will offertheir fare for purchase on Fridayevening, all day Sunday, andMonday evening, and a food courtwill be open Saturday.

While you’re here, you’ll get achance to hear more about theParks Department’s history, themany amenities available and allthe fantastic plans for the future ofthe system.

On Monday evening,Illumination will welcome the2014 Annual Meeting of theMissouri Municipal League; repre-sentatives from across the state willconverge on St. Charles just intime to take part in the celebra-tion.

Great ready for exciting times and the sounds of cow-bells as the MO’ Cowbell Marathon comes to St.Charles the weekend of October 3rd – 5th!

Now in its fourth year, the 2014 race promises to be big-ger and better than ever with an estimated 5,000+ runnersstarting from Frontier Park on the historic St. Charles river-front. MO’ Cowbell 2014 has a race for every skill level:full marathon, half marathon, half marathon relay, and a 5Kopen to runners and walkers alike.

Not running, no problem! The 2014 Health and FitnessExMO’ sponsored by Barnes-Jewish St. Peters and ProgressWest Hospitals is open to the public. This exciting pre-raceevent which serves as packet pickup for runners and will fea-ture close to 60 local and national vendor booths. TheHealth and Fitness ExMO takes place noon to 7 p.m.Friday, Oct. 3rd and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4th atJ. Scheidegger Center for the Arts on LindenwoodUniversity’s Campus in St. Charles. Admission and parkingare free.

Organized by the civic group Partners for Progress incooperation with Big River Running Company, MO’Cowbell Marathon has quickly established itself as thefastest and flattest course in the St. Louis region.

Runners and spectators love the cowbells, music and festivities at the Runner’s Village on race day, not to mention having their picture taken with Chuck the Cow,the race mascot.

During the race, spectators gather at Frontier Park for thestart and finish, along the route to New Town in St. Charles,or at the High-Five Zone at Hermans Farm Orchard.Located at right before Mile 5, the High Five zone is a fami-ly favorite with hayrides, pumpkin picking, children’s playarea, and live entertainment from a local high school march-ing band.

John Ulett: I got startedby attending BroadcastCenter when I was 16 yearsold while still a junior inhigh school. I got my firstjob from an instructor atBroadcast Center who wasgoing to be the ProgramDirector of a new stationgoing on the air in the fallof 1974 called KEZK.

owned Broadcast Centerand Dave Ralston who gaveme my first pro job atKEZK. Ron Stevens andShelley Grafman who hiredme at KSHE in 1975. RickBalis, John Beck andNational Program Directorfor Emmis BroadcastingRick Cummings who havebeen great supporters ofmine for all of the yearsI've been at KSHE undertheir leadership. And finallyJeff Smulyan the CEO ofEmmis Broadcasting whichhas owned KSHE since1984. All these guys sawsomething they liked inme. I'll never know whatthat was but I'll always begrateful to them.
