®TimeMapThe project is researching methods for recording, indexing, analysing and delivering Humanities data with spatial and temporal components. We add value to historical and contemporary information by making it accessible on the web through indexed access to scattered resources, interactive maps, timelines and map animation.

The project has developed the world's first general-purpose, interactive, time-enabled distributed mapping system. Using web-based software, users from around the globe can register and share cultural data through a central clearinghouse and combine dispersed datasets to generate interactive maps and online publications.

Online Encyclopaedia

Produced by the publishers of the Macquarie Dictionary, MacquarieNet is a comprehensive online library which delivers Australia's major reference works, including daily

AAP news feeds. TimeMap provides a map-based interface and search facility and on-the-fly-graphing of census data, as well as a data collection tool which can be integrated into classroom exercises.

ECAI is collaborating with the California Digital Library's eScholarship program in an electronic publication series

based on TimeMap technology. The program moves beyond conventional Humanities publication in a digital medium. The ePublications are assembled from distributed resources registered in the clearinghouse and allow ‘readers’ to customise cartography, filter for time and space, build animations, and navigate from the map interface to other resources.

Digital Cultural AtlasThe project has developed the core technology for the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI), a UC Berkeley-based global consortium of Humanities scholars and information technology researchers. The ECAI community is creating a digital library for history and culture with a time-enabled map-based interface. The methodology allows resources from around the world to be shared and analysed using the universal categories of time and space.

TimeMap

Multicultural Atlas

The Peopling Fairfield City web site, was commissioned by the NSW Migration Heritage Centre, to demonstrate the capacity of online media to deliver educational and amenity resources, to promote cultural and environmental awareness and to contribute to an appreciation of cultural diversity within local communities. The

site includes TimeMap interactive web maps that link to audio files describing locations within the city.

Museum Kiosk

In partnership with the Museum of Sydney and ESRI Australia, TimeMap was used to

present historical information on the development of Sydney through an interactive map-based museum kiosk in 2001. The interface integrates and delivers digital versions of historical maps, written accounts, images, sounds and animations, as well as resources drawn from the Internet. Further development has prototyped a distributed system that manages and delivers digital data to support displays throughout the museum.

Sites & Monuments Register TimeMap has worked with UNESCO to develop an interactive map-

based website of World Heritage Sites in Asia and the Pacific. The interface shows the location of the sites as well as those proposed for nomination, and allows users to zoom in to plans of individual sites and structures. The time-enabled interface allows users to view the sites in the context of major political entities, ethnic groups, natural habitats and the history of material culture within the region.

Animated Maps

In partnership with the National Institute of Korean History TimeMap was used to create a Flash (.swf) animation overview of the history of Korea from 200 CE to 1000 CE. A more detailed animation of the Khmer Empire has also been created, working with Kyoto University.

TimeMap users can create their own animations fromdistributed data resourcesat the click of a button.

Angkor Project

The Greater Angkor Project is building a spatial database for the Angkor World Heritage site in Cambodia. Existing data from decades of research are being enhanced through analysis of NASA airborne radar images. Finer grain detail is captured through field survey using digital cameras, handheld computers and GPS. TimeMap is being used to develop an intuitive front-end to this complex array of data.
