The news and ideas magazine for the Agents of Liberty National

LNL

March 2014

Time For A Little MadnessI can honestly say that March Madness is one of my favorite times of the year. The competitive edge, the excitement, the drive to win, and the unpredictable feats that always seem to take place never fail to amaze me. (Plus, there’s a great college basketball tournament going on, too.)

Of course what I’m talking about is Liberty National’s own March Madness competition, in which every Agency has a chance to showcase its skills, outdo its opponents, and claim bragging rights for a well deserved victory. It’s a chance to show what you’re capable of, and it’s a chance to experience the kind of success you’ve always known you can accomplish.

I hope every Agent, Supervising Agent, Agency Director, Regional Agency Director, and Agency Owner is motivated by the possibilities this competition always has for those who truly put their hearts into it. I know that some Agencies are smaller or less experienced than others, but it’s essential to compete in this tournament with full force, no matter how big, small, or successful you are or have been in the past. It is only by having visions of achieving something great that makes victory possible.

Take the other March Madness tournament for example and inspiration. This is an event that thrives on upsets and on underdogs knocking their opponents off the bracket. It’s these upsets that have kept the tourney such an exciting thing to watch. They have made devoted fans cheer in victory and yell in disappointment; they have made some gamblers rich and others broke; and they have revealed the possibility that absolutely nothing is certain when rankings and seeds are involved.

Just last year, #15 seed Florida Gulf Coast University advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the tournament – a well respected round for even the schools ranked at the top. Their unexpected run in the tourney proves that anything is possible, even for those who don’t have the strongest record. My point is, let our own March Madness tournament motivate you to aim higher, to look beyond your ranking or your past, and to believe in your potential to do great things.

Now that we’re coming to the end of our tourney, I want to congratulate the incredible performances I witnessed and applaud the devotion and hard work that

came as a result of this competition. And even if you aren’t named the champion of 2014, your efforts did not go to waste … because when we’re all hustling to be the last team standing, that’s just good news for everyone’s production numbers, regardless of who gets to cut down the net.

I know there’s a competitive fire burning in all of you, just waiting for an opportunity to take you and your career to the next level. What I hope you take away from this event is the inspiration to continue to play your hardest all year, every year. I know there’s a competitive fire burning in all of you, just waiting for an opportunity to take you and your career to the next level. This is that opportunity, throughout the tournament and beyond, to know success and to let it change your life. You should think of this competition as one that continues all year, and every day of success you have can be counted as an advancement to the next round. Be the champion of your own life and your own career, always giving 100 percent and always going for the win. •

MARCH MADNESS Develops Liberty National Leaders

It’s March Madness time again at Liberty National! This is the third year we’ve held the competition giving Agency Owners the opportunity to challenge their Agents and win, regardless of the size of the Agency. Competition brings out the best in people and is very healthy. It’s the euphoria of winning that motivates Agents to play another week.

Competitions like this help develop leaders and sharpen the skills necessary to be successful. In order to win you have to have a game plan and vision. As a leader, you

have to rally the people around you to accomplish the goal. Aligning the management team is one of the most critical steps of building a winning culture. It creates pride in the Agency.

March Madness creates a culture of winners and determined Agencies. Sales people are very competitive, and the competition helps Agents step up, do their best, and compete with their fellow Agents and leaders.

It’s important for leaders to have challenges and set big goals because it teaches them to have vision. Without challenges there is no change. Leaders should always improve themselves by taking time to read leadership books and articles. Set specific times every week to learn, not only for yourself, but also for classroom style training for future leaders in their Agencies.

What kind of leadership have you shown in the March Madness competition?

Liberty National Book ClubThe 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization

In the award-winning book The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization by leadership guru John Maxwell, readers learn how to make an impact in their workplaces or organizations from any level of leadership.

To be a powerful leader at Liberty National, you must learn how to lead those who follow you, but also how to lead your superiors. In his book, Maxwell offers principles for leading down, leading up, and leading across. No matter what your role in the workplace, you need to have effective leadership skills that benefit yourself and others. You’re a key player in the overall success of your Agency, so be influential while growing yourself and others.

Master the skills needed to lead in any situation, and use your influence to make a difference in the careers of other Liberty National Agents. Channel that inner champion and take on the responsibility of developing others into valuable team players. You can help yourself and others when you read Liberty National’s March leadership guide.

Have you read this book? Want to discuss what you learned with other Agents? Join us on the LNL blog and share your thoughts!

THE LAW OF REFLECTION

4From John Maxwell’s The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth

“People have innumerable experiences every day, and many learn nothing from them, because they never take the time to pause and reflect. Learning to pause allows growth to catch up with you.” - John Maxwell

1. Reflection turns experience into insight. Having trouble setting appointments or closing sales? Stop and reflect on what the reason could be. Look within to change the outcome.

2. Everyone needs a time and place to pause. Set aside a special place to think … a small room in your house, an outside patio, your office chair, or even the front seat of your car. Remember, if you’re going down the wrong road, you don’t need motivation to speed up. You need to stop, pause, reflect, and decide what you need to do to change course.

3. Pausing with intention expands and enriches thinking. ‘Great’ individuals spend time alone thinking and exploring possibilities and experiences. They mull things over; consider situations from several angles; then decide the best course of action.

4. When you take time to pause, use your ‘I’s’.

¬ Investigation — to discover insights and truths.

¬ Incubation — to listen to your inner self and learn from it.

¬ Illumination — to experience sudden realization or insight.

¬ Illustration — to put ‘flesh’ on ideas. Don’t just ‘look’— ‘see’ and connect with what’s there.

Knowing yourself well is at the heart of quality reflections, regardless of subject or circumstances. Write out answers to the following questions to help you discover what you truly know, think, and believe.

1. What is your biggest asset and liability?

2. What is your highest high and lowest low?

3. What is your most and least worthwhile emotion?

4. What is your best and worst habit?

5. What is most fulfilling to you, and what do you most highly prize?

When you know yourself well, and you pause and reflect, the results you get are in sync with who you are and what you really want. Your goal in personal growth is reaching your potential. Pausing and reflecting on a situation helps you adjust your perspective to create the best possible outcome.

“It is necessary ... for a man to go away by himself ... to sit on a rock ... and ask, ‘who am I, where have I been, and where am I going?’”

- Carl Sandburg, American writer, editor, poet

26 - torch March 2014 MARCH MADNESS

perspective

Steve DiChiaroExecutive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer

Are You Leading with Passion?I can’t believe it’s March Madness again already. It seems like about a month ago, our top Agency Owners were battling it out for a place in the Final Four before their ultimate victory. And now they’re doing it all over again! But that spirit of competition is hard to avoid this time of year (and who would want to?). College basketball mania is everywhere. Even if you’re not a diehard fan, you can’t help but appreciate and admire the dedication, discipline, and hard work these young collegiate athletes exhibit every day to bring their teams to final victory. That desire to be the best, and to be recognized for being the best, is what makes the NCAA competition so exciting every year.

But what’s behind that desire to be the best and to be recognized for it? It’s passion! Without passion for their sport, these young athletes would never achieve the degree of success they have on the collegiate basketball court. It’s their passion that takes them well beyond the ranks of the average player or athlete to be among the best in the world.

Do you remember that quote from the late Steve Jobs? “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Do you have passion for what you do? Passion is critical if you’re going to succeed in this industry. Passion keeps you energized on days when nothing seems to go right, because it feeds your determination to make things better. Passion feeds your excitement when you have a fantastic day and makes you want to be successful again the next day. Passion is behind your success, and your passion helps you lead others in that same direction.

The following excerpt is from Leading with Passion, 10 Essentials for Inspiring Others by John Murphy and holds a lot of truth: “When you feel truly passionate and inspired about someone or something, what frame of mind are you in? What are you willing to do? What kind of effort are you willing to put forth?

“Chances are, you feel motivated to do whatever it takes, without fear or doubt, to turn your vision into reality. You grow in confidence. You believe you can do it. You are committed from the heart and soul.”

“You believe you can do it”… that says it all, doesn’t it? When you believe in yourself and the people around you, you can overcome just about any obstacle and achieve what you want for yourself, your Agency, your family, and our great Company.

Passion is critical if you’re going to succeed in this industry.Whether you’re a millionaire living in a penthouse in New York City or an unemployed auto worker living in subsidized housing in Detroit, living your life with passion is what makes it worthwhile. As Liberty National Agents, Supervising Agents, Agency Directors, Regional Agency Directors, and Agency Owners, you have accepted the Opportunity of a Lifetime. With that opportunity, you can live your life with a passion and enthusiasm that many men and women may never have the opportunity to experience. And the best part is you can pay it forward to others.

In his book, Murphy says, “Achieving the goals you set for your organization goes beyond creating a plan and mapping out year-end objectives. It takes a passionate leader to inspire others to go beyond their limits … and the discipline necessary to measure performance and to challenge both you and your team to reach new heights. Passionate leadership requires positive energy, and positive energy flows from spirit.” I’ve got the Liberty National spirit. AND I BELIEVE YOU DO TOO!
