The Australian Government released Statement of Principles for Australian Innovation Precincts in October 2018 to pursue ‘place-based innovation’ and to encourage ‘bottom-up leadership’ to drive precinct development. This master class is timely to develop best practice leadership, strategy and place making into an art of ‘crafting Australian innovation precinct’.

LEARNING GOAL

This master class integrates leadership, policy, planning, economics, and urban design into an approach to crafting innovative places. Exploring new paradigms of innovative places under the framework of globalisation, urbanisation, and new technology, it argues against state-centric policies to innovation and focuses on how a globalised approach can shape innovative capacity and competitiveness. It notably situates the innovative place making paradigm in a broader context of globalisation, urbanisation, the knowledge economy and technological advancement, and employs an international perspective that includes a wide range of case studies from America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Developing a co-design and co-creation paradigm that integrates governments, the private sector and the community into shared understanding and collaborative action in crafting innovative places, it discusses place-based innovation in Australian context to inform policy making and planning, and to contribute to policy debates on programs of smart cities and communities, and the art of ‘crafting Australian innovation precincts’.

CRAFTING AUSTRALIAN INNOVATION PRECINCTS: LEADERSHIP, STRATEGY, AND PLACE MAKING

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• To have a comprehensive understanding of international best practices of innovation precincts;

• To have an in-depth understanding of Australian leading innovation precincts, and how they perform in an international comparative context;

• To develop a suite of ‘crafting’ approaches and tools in terms of leadership, strategy, and place making for Australian innovation precincts.

FACILITATOR

PROFESSOR RICHARD HU is an urban planner (Australia and US registered) with a wide range of professional experiences in urban policy, planning, and property development and management in multi-national contexts. He is

currently a professor at Faculty of Business, Government and Law and Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis, University of Canberra. His research cuts across urban design, urban science, and urban policy to investigate important contemporary issues concerning design excellence, global cities, urban competitiveness and sustainability, and place-based innovation in an environment of increasing uncertainty and change. Richard’s latest projects include ‘Designing the Global City’, ‘Global Shanghai’, ‘Relational Global Cities’, ‘Smart Work and Smart Cities’, and ‘Knowledge Cities in Australia’.
