Timber is classified as either
hardwood or softwood
Hardwood trees have broad
leaves with an encased seed
and known as deciduous.
Softwood trees have needles and
seeds held in cones and known
as coniferous.

Timber conversion
Conversion is the sawing of a log into commercial boards or planks.
There are four main methods of conversion:
1.Through and through
2.Tangential
3.Quarter sawn
4.Boxed heart
