Commodore’s LogBy the time you read this log entry, May will be a fleeting memory, and summer on the Monterey Peninsula will be in full swing. Harbor parking will be a commodity, there will be an amazing amount of people in town, and Club activities will be at a new high. It just doesn’t get any better! !As many of you have witnessed, our new entry ramp has been completed, and the official ribbon cutting was held on Memorial Day, the Club’s birthday. This ramp is a huge improvement to the Club, and is the first step in a multi-year, multi-phase process, and I won’t have enough room to give all of the credit where it is due. Suffice it to say, simply, “thank you.” Our contractor completed the work in very short order, and members now have a safe and easy entrance to the Club. !There is a great deal of finish work to be done to complete this phase, including painting, plumbing, and electrical work. One section of our dock will have to be modified to allow use of the dock ramp, and preparation for the further expansion of the Club must be completed. Needless to say, all of this requires substantial funds, and, to that end, two of our Board member volunteers are working diligently on a financial plan of action. We will keep the membership posted on these developments as they evolve. !In the midst of all of this construction, Club life has continued without a pause, and I’d like to thank everyone for their patience, especially the staff for adapting to every day’s new scenario. Our amazing Club volunteers pulled off a stellar Spinnaker Cup and California Offshore Race Week, led by Dino Pick and the fabulous Betsy Jeffers. Our Juniors, led by Sharron Frey, put on a wonderful breakfast for the racers, and the

offshore racers enjoyed a reception to fuel them up for the next leg. Volunteers made all of this possible, and I thank each and every one. !But the fun doesn’t stop here! June is full of activities for everyone—the Commodore’s Regatta for both racers and Cruisers, regularly scheduled racing, and our Club Open House. Our fellow boaters, the Great Pacific Ocean Race rowers will be embarking on their adventure near the first weekend of June, and we’ll be sending them off in typical Club style. And don’t forget the Wednesday barbecues and Friday dinners, and, especially, don’t forget to enjoy the Club—your Club! I look forward to seeing all of you! !Cheers-

Commodore David Duncan

Tolosa Winery Winemaker's Dinner

by Jerry Stratton !Put July 9th on your "place to be" calendar! That place is our YC. This will be an extraordinary evening of food and wine pairings that you will NOT want to miss. We recently brought in several Tolosa wines that everyone is raving about: first a Syrah with great depth and excellent structure, then a wonderful "enjoy on the deck" dry Rose of Grenache, and most recently a big Cabernet Sauvignon that we have trouble keeping in stock! !For this winemaker's dinner, I have tasted (someone has to do it) two of their rare and very limited production wines that retail in the $60-80 range and selected them for pairings. One is a stunning Rhone blend and the second is a huge Reserve Pinot Noir. Along with several of their other wines in wider production, I think you will enjoy the pairings. As always, food will be gourmet and presented as such! In honor of the French Bastille Day on July 14 I have requested that our staff do a French flair or theme for the food for this evening. See you there!

When up the shrouds the sailor goesAnd ventures on the yard

The landsman who no better knowBelieve his lot is hard

Bold Jack with smiles each danger meets Weighs anchor heaves the log

Trims all the sails belays his sheets And drinks his can of grog. !

Can of Grog, Unknown !Welcome everyone to summer racing! Be safe and be careful of the Grog! Spring racing was very challenging taking us out racing in winds from moderate breeze to strong breeze. Thanks to everyone for staying safe! !Just back from consultations at NATO so not a long report this time. !We are up through Sunset Series Race 10 and close to half way through the Sunset season. The leaders are: A Fleet-Bustin' Loose; B Fleet-U20; C Fleet-Ecaroh; and Shields Fleet-Rolly. . The Spring PHRF Series was won by: A Fleet-Bustin’ Loose; B Fleet-Scandalous; and C Fleet-Ecaroh. The Spring ODR Series was won by: Shields-Rolly; and Santa-22’s- Leprechaun. !Regarding the Shields final Spring results, I provide the top six finishers. As best I know, the top six Shields at the end of the Summer series have a chance to participate in this year’s Shields Nationals in Monterey Bay. The top six finishers in the Spring for our two Monterey Bay Fleets were in order: Rolly (12) Yankee (12), October (12), Helen (12), Stillwater (7) and Delaplaine (7). More on this to follow! Good luck to all in the Summer series.

CONGRATS! !Congrats also go out to Encore for winning the Single Handed Long Distance Race on 23 April and Ari on Tiburon for winning the Shields Ladies Day Race on 21 May. !Question for next Month…Same as last month ! Since the Club’s initiation, what members have won National Championships in what Class? !I continue to discover the wealth of Champions in our Club and that includes College. I’ll have an answer next month. !Your friend, John Feeley

Lois E. Pomeroy, long time resident of Pacific Grove, left us for the arms of her waiting husband, T. Dawson Pomeroy, and son, Thomas D. Pomeroy Jr., on February 13th, 2016 in Fresno, California. Lois is survived by her daughter, Louann. Lois was the doting grandmother to Aaron, Wendy, Michele, Katrin and Heidi. She lavished love on her great grandchildren Madison, Savannah, Lauren, Logan, Chelsea, Kelvin, Benjamin and Jakob. Her most recent favorite was her great, great grandson Levi with whom she loved to share cookies. !Lois was born in 1919 and saw changes to the world that are hard to imagine. Her teenage years were during the Great Depression, her twenties during World War II. Her

husband, Dawson, was employed in the Cannery Row industry as a food chemist during its peak through to its nadir. She raised two children through their teens during tumult of the 60’s. Her son was in uniform during the Vietnam war. Her daughter was studying music in Vienna, dating a young Czechoslovakian musician when the Soviets crushed the Prague Spring student uprising. Lois lived through interesting times. !Despite all of that or perhaps because of it, Lois and her husband, Dawson, were long-time members of Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club. Their two digit signal number was well used for many decades. Lois was an active member and president of the Spinnakers, the fundraising arm and all around support team in the early days of MPYC. In addition to being a frequent patron of Thursday lunches, (that is her corner table) she also was a very active participant at the MPYC Birthday Party, making it her own. Perhaps her most loved yacht club event became the New Year’s Eve party. In 1988 she managed to use the club party to set up a blind date between her granddaughter Michele and her future grandson-in-law Thomas Hoover. While she might have had altruistic motives, she was not above calling on her “Chosen One” and his wife to make sure she always had a ride to yacht club events, especially the New Year’s Eve party! !Lois was incredibly active her entire life and had an impact far beyond her diminutive size. In 2008, at her great granddaughter’s 16th birthday party, she owned the MPYC dance floor long after the teenagers were too tired to dance. She taught her great grandson the finer points of how to win at cards, even with a losing hand. She is lovingly remembered by her family as a fun-loving, caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend with grit and a zest for life who is greatly missed. At a date to be announced, her ashes will be scattered at sea, off Lovers Point, so she can always have a view of the “Basket of Jewels” that she called the Monterey Peninsula.

Nine sailors showed up for this annual event, four from MPYC and the rest from the bay area and Santa Cruz. !The first race was in light wind from the northwest, which Simon Bell, of Great Britain, won in his new laser and MKII full radial rig. Toshi Takayanagi, fresh off taking 21st in the Laser Masters Worlds in Puerto Vallarta, won the first Radial race. The second race was thankfully abandoned as the wind dropped to zero about five minutes after the start and all the racers were barely off the start line. Race committee, headed by John Ruck and very ably assisted by Kit and Sarah Duncan, waited till the new breeze built for the south and had to completely reposition the course. Thanks to David Duncan, Randy Frey, Louis Algaze and Rick Light on the two chase boats for making this happen. !There was a general recall at the next start of the windward-finish course. Garth Hobson got two lucky shifts on the left side of the course to round the windward mark in first place and was able to hold off Tracy Usher till the finish line. !Laird Henkel won the Radial race. Dave Lapier won the next full rig race and Laird repeated in the radial rig division. The wind picked up and Tracy turned on the jets to win the next three races comfortably to take the full rig division and the club laser championship yet again. Laird and Toshi shared the same number of wins at the end of the day with three each, but Ashley

Hobson’s second place finish in the last race meant that Toshi took the radial division. Ashley was particularly pleased with that finish because she beat her dad who was laboring in a full rig. !Thank you once again to race committee, for putting on this event which is part of the Svendsen's Grand Prix series, a dozen laser regattas in northern California. The personalized wine bottle trophies, Ashley’s idea of a couple of years ago, have become quite a hit with winning competitors.

New Member !Michael Polkabla

!Actually I am NOT a "New" member at all, but rather a return member of the MPYC. You see, I am now 55 years old and actually grew up in Pacific Grove and started sailing at about 12 years old with my dad, Steve Polkabla. We started sailing together in the mid 70's when my dad made me a very special deal... he put me in the local sailing school at the Monterey Bay Yacht Center (where the London Bridge Pub is now today) in exchange for teaching him what I learned in sailing school on our Cal2-24 Altair (which is still owned and sailed by Frank Pierce locally). Of course, I soon became a Junior sailor in the MPYC program where I learned so many valuable lessons regarding sailing, but most importantly in "life" under the instruction and tutorship of great sailing and personal mentors such as Harvey Kilpatrick, Chuck Jacobson, Chick Hudson,

Dick Clark, Art Sutton, Jack MacAleer and ohhh so many more great individuals, that I can't even begin to list them all. It was at MPYC that I grew up sailing first Hobie 10's, then Lasers, Shields, Mercuries, and all kinds of PHRF boats at this great yacht club as a junior and then intermediate sailor. I also competed with the club as a junior member in the November Cup and Governors Cup (match racing series) during multiple years representing MPYC, next to such fine sailors and current members as Mark Chandler, Robin Jeffers, Dave Morris and others who are now successful individuals throughout the country. !Following my high school graduation at Pacific Grove High, I went off to MPC for a couple years and then transferred to UC Santa Barbara where I promptly joined the UCSB sailing team having four more great years there (due to my double major in BioChemistry/Molecular Biology and Aquatic Biology)... Im happy to say that I had lots of success on the sailing team as winning skipper of the sloop intercollegiate nationals at King's Point and traveling pretty much every other weekend in intercollegiate racing throughout California and throughout the country. In 1983 I was named as part of the All American Intercollegiate PCIYRA team HM and was the Santa Barbara Athlete of the year in 1984 as well. After college I moved up to the San Francisco area to work and sail where I was recruited as a special racing member of the Saint Francis Yacht Club where I still maintain and hail my membership as a non-resident member. !Over the years I am fortunate to have accrued a total of five National Championships... four in sailing competition (Mercury 82, Intercollegiate Sloops 83, Shields 84, and as a crew for Richard Clark on his Mercury in 2000) and more recently won a motorcycle National Championship in AHRMA roadracing (competing across the US) winning in the Gran Prix 200 Class in 2010. I also have a motorcycle Bonneville Land Speed record in the Honda CB160 Class in 2008 which, to my knowledge, still stands. !I have lots of hobbies which include martial arts (first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do), sailing of course, all kinds of motorcycling both competition (and now for fun) and all kinds of outdoor events and sports. In 1994,

New Member !Isaac Cohana

!Issac lives in Palo Alto, CA. He is an Electrical and Computer Engineer (B.Sc) and MBA, working as Executive Vice President at CEVA, Inc. Isaac is married, with three daughters. Their family has a Jack Russell Terrier and a Sphynx cat.

Isaac was born and raised in Israel. He grew up by the Mediterranean Sea, and used to Windsurf and Scuba-Dive in the Mediterranean and the Red-Sea. He moved to CA in 2003 and started sailing in 2005 at Club Nautique in San Francisco Bay. He sails mostly in SF bay with little

experience outside the Golden Gate. He has chartered a sailing boat twice in the BVI, and has also sailed with friends in Thailand and Israel. Isaac owns a Caliber 40 LRC (cruiser/sailing boat). He used to dock in Sausalito and has enjoyed a lot of sailing in San Francisco Bay, but at some point decided to gain more Open Ocean Sailing experience. He sailed solo down to Monterey in October 2015 (with overnight stop at Pillar Point). Since then, his boat has been docking at Breakwater Cove. Isaac is mostly interested in Cruising but welcomes any opportunity to experience racing. He is looking forward to exploring Monterey Bay and hopefully sailing down the coast to southern CA and Mexico .... circumnavigation is the end goal after the children leave the nest (his youngest is 12 years old).

Isaac has joined MPYC to meet people who share same passion for sailing, and to exchange and expand his perspective and horizon through others who probably have more experience in sailing... and perhaps try racing.

!Michael Polkabla

continued !

I started and now continue to run my environmental consulting firm, BioMax Environmental, Inc., where I am a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) specializing in hazardous materials management, environmental consulting, and industrial hygiene with offices in Pinole (the Bay Area) and a field office in Pacific Grove. !I am divorced now and have two children who are both graduated from college. My daughter Tara, whom was named after our Shields Tara many years ago, now lives in Madera. My son, Maxfield (Max) is currently living in the Bay Area (following graduating from college) and is looking for his first "career" related job in that area. !After moving back to this area in 2010, I started sailing with Mark and Heidi Chaffee on their Express 37, Locamotion and more recently sailing and competing with Garth and Ashley Hobson on their Shields, Stillwater for the past three years (and competing as their crew at the recent nationals in NY and Newport, RI). I just recently purchased the Shields, Yankee, from Bob Furney and now am looking forward to competing in the MPYC championship and Shields Nationals later this year, also hosted by MPYC. Crewing with me currently are Dave Morris, Jared January, and Michelle Balaam (who I am happy to say is my wonderful girlfriend). !Coming full circle back to the Monterey Area, I am proud to once again to join and become (what I call) a "renewed" member of the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club and again look forward to both participating and contributing to our sailing community which has been so instrumental in my life. I also look forward to meeting new and old friends here at the MPYC and building many new memories in this wonderful "family" community of sailors.

MPYC Cruisers go to Moss Landing and the Elkhorn Yacht Club !

Over the weekend of 20-22 May, 2016, MPYC & Cruising Club members visited the Elkhorn Yacht Club in Moss Landing Harbor. Two boats sailed up Friday, with Chris Light single-handing Pronto, experiencing some engine problems, and Art and Lal Sutton and Greg and Di Cailliet sailing Gitane. It was a swift sail with ~20 knot winds and medium swells and chop. We tied up at a nice spot along the north dock close to the EYC and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon.

Later, we, and several other MPYC folks who drove up (Martisa Light, Mary Pankonin, and Terry and Linda McCleery), went to a potluck dinner at EYC and enjoyed the food, music, and ambience there. Also, that evening, Austin and David Book and Ashley Hobson sailed Kon Tiki up to the EYC guest dock to be there for the next day’s Otter Cup.

!Early in the morning of the next day, two other racing boats, Augie Louis’ Ardea, and D.J. Skelton and Tucker Hirsch’s Cara Maria sailed up, also for the day’s racing. Three other cruising boats sailed up later that morning, including the Hoovers on Shaman, the Rucks on Ruckiss, and Didier Dutertre and friends on Toba Leah. The cruisers rafted off the first two boats, while the racers utilized EYC’s guest dock. There were 10 boats entered in the Otter Cup. It was a nice day from Moss Landing’s mile buoy (MLA) to Monterey’s mile buoy and back for this race. And two of MPYC’s entries did well - Ardea was first while Kon Tiki scored fourth. !David Book was going to sail his sailboat Hangover down from Alameda for the Otter Cup but had some difficulty with his engine and also experienced a terrifying rogue wave that both washed him overboard, and then washed him back on when the boat self-tacked. Needless to say, we are happy that he survived and got his boat back to Alameda safely, but cold and wet. Be sure to ask him for additional details if you are interested. It is quite a story. !Saturday night, EYC had a pasta dinner and everyone had a good time at that. Again, some MPYC members !

drove up for the dinner and the serious dart games that ensued. Kon Tiki sailed back that evening to Monterey. !Sunday morning was the infamous Nautical Flea Market, with EYC serving breakfast burritos and other items to eat and drink, plus music. Several MPYC members participated in that event and purchased some absolutely necessary items they could not do without. The Fishers and Mangolds drove up for the occasion and ended up sailing Pronto back with Chris and Martisa. The remaining boats sailed back to Monterey Sunday afternoon, while the Rucks stayed over Sunday night and sailed home early Monday. !So, once again, MPYC cruisers and racers were treated well by the EYC folks, especially RC Chair Janice D’Arcy, Port Captain Brian Ackerman, and the Bar Captain, Linda May. Thanks go to them and all of their other officers and members for their hospitality. !The cruising club met for their monthly potluck meeting on 10 May and heard from Chris Martin about his ocean rowing experiences as well as the Great Pacific Race, which is presently assembled in Monterey Harbor and planning some ocean exercises before rowing to Hawaii

in early June. The 14 June cruisers’ meeting will feature Peggy Stap from Marine Life Studies, who will discuss “Rescuing Whales – One at a Time and the Whale Entanglement Team (WET). The topic for 12 July will be the Shields Nationals with Eric Anderson and Garth Hobson. On 9 August, we will hear from Tucker Hirsch and her “Tall Tales Aboard Tall Ships.” We have a full slate of speakers and events scheduled for the rest of the year and details will be in future Tiller articles. The next cruise is to Stillwater Cove and back for the Commodore’s Regatta on 10-12 June, 2016. !If anyone has questions or suggestions, please contact me by email or phone ([email protected] or 831-372-2751).

California Offshore Race Week !by Betsy Jeffers

New Offshore Series a Success! !We tried something new and it worked! The California Offshore Race Week (CORW), combining three separate races into one extended week event. The first race, the popular Spinnaker Cup, a race co-hosted with San Francisco Yacht Club and MPYC started on Friday of the Memorial Day weekend in San Francisco, and ended Saturday morning in Monterey. The second race, the Coastal Cup, typically a race from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, started in Monterey following the Spinnaker Cup. Finishing the series is the SoCal 300 from Santa Barbara to San Diego. All in all 543 nautical miles! The cool part of the new series is that a

boat can do one, two or all three of the legs of the series, therefore, adding more options. !When I got the call from Bill Guilfoyle, Vice Commodore of Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC), inquiring if MPYC would consider partnering with SBYC, Encinal Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club on this new venture, it seemed like a no-brainier. Three offshore racing events taking racers from San Francisco to San Diego with stops in Monterey and Santa Barbara. Luckily the Board agreed, and we were in! !A lot of hard work and coordination went into planning this event. Five yacht clubs with five different thoughts on how a regatta should be run, different rating schedules between the northern and southern boats, and the overall logistics made for interesting planning sessions. !Rear Commodore Dino Pick handled the Spinnaker Cup as per plan, thank you so much, and I handled coordinating this race into the overall event. !The Spinnaker Cup had been averaging 20 - 30 boats over the last few years. The interest in the new CORW added 29 boats to the venue, with 58 boats sailing in the Spinnaker Cup this year. Awesome!

Many, many thanks to the volunteers, too many to name here, and our wonderful staff. We delightedly finished all of the boats and they were packed safely into either the Monterey or Breakwater Cove Marina. Saturday night the YC hosted a party for the 29 boats continuing in the CORW series, and they successfully started the next leg of the series on Sunday morning. !The race to Santa Barbara has been completed. As I write this, the last leg to San Diego is underway. The boats are facing light winds unfortunately, but that is offshore yacht racing! !As always, the first time you do something new you learn things you should have or shouldn't have done, but overall the series is a huge success. I have only heard compliments about our part in hosting this event, so I thank all of you!

It was great fun to see the racing boats on the start line on Sunday. I hope some of you had the opportunity to see them too. I can't wait for next year - I am 99.9% sure we will be hosting the California Offshore Race Week next year....stay tuned.
