To play AI-,,PHABET DRAW, placeitems representing letters of the alphabet(blocks or cards or plastic letters) in acontainer. Close your eyes, pull out aletter and name the letter. You can namean.;,,,ffiect that begins with the letter or

ii.b,tdffiufuw a picture of the object.

If,ioU, ave a few minutes on your way tosbhool,,'b'i,,the grocery store, ask your mombr dhd',fo,CHOOSE A LETTER and see

how" manV words vou can think of that: I,:,:: i::: I I i i i:,':: it: i,,: ,

begin with the letter.

On a rainy duy, ask your mom to let youplay KITCHEN LETTERS. Take a sheetof paper and write the alphabet down oneside, then look for products beginningwith each letter in the kitchen cabinets, pantry or refrigerator. You can put acheck mark by each letter when you findan item or write the name of the ite{n..,beside the letter. You'Il be surprised tofuehow many items on your mom'ffiice

shelf begin with the letter "C ;:.liii...ii ,a iifp"

you'll practice reading product ',fi4ffi6'5while you decide whichr o.r", to bl ffi i'". Ifyou're playing with a friend, mak,e,1'y0ff*,,,...

many items you can find that begin witheach letter.

IJse paper grocery bags and a list ofletters for ALPHABET HUI\ilT. If severalchildren play, glve a few letters to eachone and see who's first to bring back a bagfilled with items that begin with each ofhis or her letters.

NATURE LETTERS can be played bytaking your alphabet list for a nice springor summer walk. Carry a crayon andcheck each letter when you spy an objectthat begins with the letter. If it's a familywalk, you might want to take turnsmaking sentences with the names of itemsyou find.

LICENSE PLATE I-,OOKOUTplayed by working as a group tocall out letters of the alphabet insequence. Each player couldalso write theletters seen (in orout of order) andtry to find allletters beforeother players.

FANCY SENTENCES can be fun for thewhole famiiy. After one player beginswith a basic sentence, each player makesa new sentence using different words tosay the same thing. For example, "Thetree fell" may become "The mightyredwood crash€d," "The slender saplingsplinter€d," or "The giant oak thunderedto the ground." When everyone has had achance to change the sentence, someonegives another basic sentence and thechallenge goes on.

You can rotate through the alphabet withfamily or friends by playing "MY NAMEIS." When it's your turn, just choose aname, city and job beginning with the .:,i:

next letter. If you're the third player you '

might s&y, "My name is Carol. I'm from ',Cleveland, and I can clams." You cA'$

For each spinner you'll need:o 1 button at least an inch wideo About 3 feet of string. You can use

nylon thread or a medium weightcotton thread such as crochet thread. We liked embroidery thread(6 strand) best, but regular sewingthread will work if it has somepolyester for strength.

t', \ato.,'..,,..,,.,*."-o.r'' "'"

Thread the stringthrough the holesin your button, using the 2 holesfarthest apart ifyour button has 4holes. Moisten the

ends of a medium weight cotton orembroidery thread to make this stepeasier. Now, tie the ends of yourstring together so the button is on aloop of string.

Put the loops around your thumbs ormiddle fingers and spin the buttonaround and around between yourhands. After 10 or 12 crrcles, pullyour hands apart firmly. Your buttonshould spin as the string unwinds. The button's weight will then cause it

to rewind in the opposite direction.Move your hands toward one anotheras the button rewinds. As it slowsdown, quickly pull your hands apartagain to reverse the direction thebutton is spinning.

With a little practice, your hands willmove together and apart as thebutton winds and unwinds. The fasteryou open and close your hands, thefaster the button will move. You canmake different sounds and watch thebutton hop about by touching it to adesk or other surface whileit's spinning.
