Publish Glad Tidings … tidings of peace Tidings of Jesus redemption and release

July, 2017

It was my privilege recently to offer the opening devotions at the June Board Meeting of JCCM (Jefferson County Community Ministries). My remarks were apparently well-received, reflecting perhaps that all people need to affirm one another if we are to become the family of God. Here’s what I said: It’s no surprise to anyone these days that the religious scene, as well as the world scene, is rapidly changing; so much so that we may need to adjust many of our fundamental beliefs. In the midst of all the shifting religious sentiments and attitudes confronting us daily, I am aware that I came here to Charles Town just a few months ago primarily as an Episcopal priest, appointed by my bishop to serve a particular congregation called Zion Church. And yet what I have found here, is an energized civic community, open to the wider human purpose of serving one another so that we all can succeed at the challenging, and sometimes scary enterprise, called life. But the overriding question of course is: How? How do we do it? And even more to the point - how do we do it with integrity? Let me suggest we do it by working intentionally with people of other faiths, or no faith at all. And that may not be as radical as it sounds. In fact it may even be what God has in mind for us to do in this wider entity called Jefferson County. Primarily we are committed to our own faith traditions, but working cooperatively with other groups and organizations allows us to see that we all hold similar goals and worthy objectives. To that end, listen to this passage written by a woman rabbi; as all the people of the earth somehow managed to come together… Then, each person who had a name for God looked at the others who had a different name. They looked into God’s mirror and saw their own faces and the faces of all the others. And they called out their names for God: Source of Life, Creator of Light, Shepherd, Master of Peace, My Rock, Healer, Redeemer, Ancient One, Comforter, Mother, Father,

Friend, all at the same time. At that moment, the people knew that all the names for God were good and no name was better than another. Then all at once, their voices came together and they called God One. Everyone listened, most of all God. (Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso) That’s the positive direction I believe the world is heading; and our task at JCCM is to make a difference in this community through compassionate acts of justice, care, mercy and kindness. Sounds fairly easy, but it’s not. It’s hard work. Even so, I challenge all of us to rise to the occasion. Everyone needs to participate, because the stakes are high, and God is both listening and watching. Michael†

“ANGELS AMONG US” REVEALED for JUNE

1. Lyn Widmyer…she is the chip off her mother’s humor and spontaneity. 2. Georgia Gessler…this explains her insightful undercover work.

3. Jill Smith…While standing in line to board our plane, I noticed a nun in line. My mom knew that I didn't like to fly so in my mind this was a sign that she was sending a nun to ensure my safe arrival to the U.S. and home. Upon seating, I noticed two seats behind us that were empty, so I asked the flight attendant to invite the nun to first class. She did so and noted that there were two nuns. Upon seating, I introduced myself and shared my story mentioning that they were my angels and guiding me home safely. We said a prayer and were on our way. During our flight Sister Guadelupe came to speak with me, she said that they were not my sign, but I was theirs and we were supposed to meet. Sister Emmanuel, the second Sister, was very ill and had been trying to get to the U.S. for medical assistance. She said the extra seating room made her

feel comfortable as she could recline and rest. Evidently, she had a severe stomach/digestive issue and things were becoming quite serious. We exchanged contact information so that we could keep in touch. Sister Emmanuel and I have communicated via text and she is doing well. What an amazing journey these ladies have been on during their missions. I felt so blessed in having met them so I did a pay it forward. I hand stitched 10 prayer flags for the Sisters to bless and share with someone in need. Their story can be found at www.solt.net. The moral of the story....it's not always about me!! I thought they were there for my spiritual need when in fact it was about helping each other and spreading love to others.

JULY “Angels Among Us”

This angel was a lazy teenager who failed to sell his allotted number of raffle tickets for his Catholic high school’s fundraiser. So, his parents wanted to teach him a lesson by making him buy all of his unsold tickets himself. He did, and he won the GRAND Prize, a brand new CAR, plus a big cash bonus for selling the winning ticket. Who won the lesson, he or his parents? Unfortunately, at this time, we only have one Angel willing to regale you with one of their stories this month. We know that there are LOTS more stories out there. We Zion members are FUN, CREATIVE, Zany, Intelligent, Gifted, and recipients of various awards and praises. If you know someone that is not willing to share their story, tell it for them (of course, with their permission). Let’s keep this going. It is great conversation. Or, I may have to make it up.

PLEASE keep them coming!

The Pentecost Banner was made in The Lindisfarne Workshop, by Barbara Porterfield. This photo was taken on Father’s Day with Phil & Barbara Porterfield and their daughter The Rev. Amy P. Turner.

The front center of the banner is worked in embroidered ultra-suede and depicts the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove into the tongues of fire. The back and front edging are Aragon Tapestry made by M. Perkins & Son, Ltd., London, United Kingdom. The firm has manufactured ecclesiastical fabrics since 1813.

The symbolism depicted in the Aragon Tapestry:

The birds symbolize the role of mediators between Heaven & Earth and in early Christian art they signified saved souls. The urn, a container for oils and perfumes, recalls Mary Magdalene and the perfumes and spices bought to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body after the crucifixion. The Blue Iris in the tapestry represents the Virgin Mary, while the Thistle is a symbol of the Passion of Jesus Christ and the suffering of the Christian martyrs. The grapevines symbolize abundant life and the grapes, the Eucharist. The banner is in place at its stand near the lectern by the baptismal font, and will remain there throughout the season of Pentecost.

“The Vanishing American Adult” by Ben Sasse

Tuesday, July 11th at 6:00 p.m.

Parish House parlors

Raised by well-meaning but overprotective parents and coddled by well-meaning but misbegotten government programs, America's youth are ill-equipped to survive in our highly-competitive global economy.

Many of the coming-of-age rituals that have defined the American experience since the Founding: learning the value of working with your hands, leaving home to start

a family, becoming economically self-reliant―are being delayed or skipped altogether. The statistics are daunting: 30% of college students drop out after the first year, and only 4 in 10 graduate. One in three 18-to-34 year-olds live with their parents.

From these disparate phenomena: Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who as president of a Midwestern college observed the trials of this generation up close, sees an existential threat to the American way of life.

In The Vanishing American Adult, Sasse diagnoses the causes of a generation that can't grow up and offers a path for raising children to become active and engaged citizens. He identifies core formative experiences that all young people should pursue: hard work to appreciate the benefits of labor, travel to understand deprivation and want, the power of reading, the importance of nurturing your body―and explains how parents can encourage them.

Our democracy depends on responsible, contributing adults to function properly―without them America falls prey to populist demagogues. A call to arms, The Vanishing American Adult will ignite a much-needed debate about the link between the way we're raising our children and the future of our country.

Wednesday, July 26th at 12:00 p.m.

Director of Music Ministries Submitted by David Miller Baptized in Water, sealed by the Spirit

–David M. Miller

“Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,

cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King; heirs of salvation, Trusting his promise, faithfully now God’s praises we sing.”*

Hymn 294 “Baptized in Water” by Michael Saward is rich in baptismal images and scriptural allusions. The opening stanza above draws upon several passages including Hebrews 1:14: “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Romans 6:3-5 provides stanza two: “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.” In the early church, every Sunday was a celebration of the Easter event, a Christian Passover. Since Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, the early Christians called the first day of the week “the eighth day” of creation, where God made all creation new. A look at our baptismal font reminds us of this in that it is designed with eight sides. This is a visual association between the waters of baptism and our new creation in Christ. We are the eighth day, the eight sides of the font, – the newness of life. Ephesians 4:4-6 provides the basis for stanza three: “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ our King: Born of one father, we are his children,

joyfully now God’s praise we sing.
