From the Pastor and Teacher
Dear Friends,
Soon I’ll be heading to the Berkshires for a few weeks of vacation. So thank you. I don’t take this for granted, but recognize the benefit as a gift of our church, which through many generations of lay leaders has sought to care for church employees. While it’s true that I work hard, it’s equally true that many people, including some reading this newsletter, work just as hard but without good opportunities for a needed time of rest and renewal. So thank you, again — and I pray that whatever time of relaxation you have, during the lovely months of summer, brings a smile to your soul.
One thing I always look forward to during down-time is reading, especially page-turners or books that make me laugh. In that vein, here’s something I’ve been saving for a light moment:
Subject: The Cat Sat on the Mat
How would the church deal with the phrase, “the cat sat on the mat” if it
appeared in the Bible?
Metaphoricists would point out that such a passage did not of course mean
that the cat literally sat on the mat. Also, cat and mat had different meanings in
those days from today, and anyway, the text should be interpreted according to
the customs and practices of the period.
That would lead to an immediate backlash from the Biblicists. They would
make it an essential condition of faith that a real, physical, living cat, being a
domestic pet of the Felix Domesticus species, and having a whiskered head and
furry body, four legs and a tail, did physically place its whole body on a floor
covering, designed for that purpose, which is ON the floor but not OF the floor.

Continued from Page 1
The expression “on the floor but not of the floor” would
be explained in a leaflet.
Meanwhile, the High Liturgicalists would have
developed the Festival of the Sedentation of the Blessed
Cat. This would teach that the cat was white and
majestically reclined on a mat of gold thread before its
assumption to the Great Cat Basket of Heaven. This is
commemorated by the singing of the Magnificat, lighting
three candles and ringing a bell five times.
This would cause a schism with the Original High
Liturgicalists, among whom believers’ tradition requires
Holy Cats Day (as it is colloquially known), to be marked
by lighting six candles and ringing the bell four times.
This would be partly resolved by the Cuckoo Land
Declaration recognizing the traditional validity of each.
Several leading theologians would issue a statement
on the Doctrine of the Feline Sedentation. It would
explain that traditionally the text describes a domestic
feline quadruped superjacent to an unattached covering
on a fundamental surface. For determining its salvific and
eschatological significations, we follow the heuristic
analytical principles adopted in dealing with the Canine
Fenestration Question (How much is that doggie in the
window?) And the Affirmative Musaceous Paradox (Yes,
we have no bananas). And so on, for another 210 pages.
The governing body of most denominations would
then commend this report as helpful resource material
for clergy to explain to the person in the pew the
difficult doctrine of “the cat sat on the mat.”
May you enjoy some time blessedly free of any pretensions, and blessedly filled with laughter.
God’s richest blessings to you,
Pastor John A. Nelson
Get Ready for Worship! Follow the “Preparing for Sunday” link on our website (NianticCommunityChurch.org). You will find the scripture readings for the current week, a brief description to set them in context, a reflection on the passages, and a prayer starter. It’s a great way to spend time with God’s Word — and since those passages are (often) the basis for services on Sunday morning, you’ll be adding a new layer of richness and meaning to the experience of worship.

A note about First Aid Kits - I updated the First Aid Kits last month. In the Bride's Room you will see a portable red bag on the shelf. It is well supplied and also has disposable after use ice packs. You will find another red bag in the downstairs kitchen, left door on the shelf on the left. This bag also is portable and has ice packs. There are two small ones(no ice packs) outside Russ's office and across from John's office. Muscle-Building Mineral - Getting 4.7 grams of potassium daily can help preserve your muscle mass as you age. Sources: Medium baked potato, especially eat the skin, spinach, 1 cup cooked better than 1 cup raw, raisins 1/4 cup, Banana 1/2 cup, Honeydew 1/2 cup, Tuna 2 oz. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Asparagus is a prebiotic which means it helps to populate the intestinal tract with friendly bacteria which will balance IBS symptoms. Eat several lightly steamed or grilled spears two times a day and look for relief in three to five days. David Grotto, R.D., 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Your Next Physical - Ask your doctor to add a Vitamin D level to your routine blood work. Optimal levels of this vitamin can lower breast cancer risk and depression in winter months Thoughts about The Law of Attraction - Any time we feel misunderstood, misused, neglected, suspicious, afraid, we are spending our thoughts and wasting our time. Whenever we assume the feeling of being what we want to be, we are investing. ~ Neville Goddard, "Awakening Imagination" Happy 4th, Marie

They flew out of Providence on Friday, June 26 and will fly back in during the wee-est hours of the morning Saturday, July 4 (1:00 AM). They have been working with the locals to make a differ-ence in the world, and no doubt they’re doing a great job! Getting your message out…Did you know that we have a sign rider with changeable copy that hangs beneath our big church sign by the road? When you have a church event coming up, fill out the form in Patty Chaffee’s office and Communications Committee member Craig Woody will take care of the rest. It’s easy breezy! Spread the word…
NCC Welcomes Visitors – You’ve heard it before—all are welcome at NCC. But what happens when a visitor pulls into the parking lot on a Sunday morning and can’t find a parking place? Not so welcoming. Now we have a new way to convey our hospitality. Two Visitor Parking signs have been installed near the front entrance of the church to let newcomers know we’re glad they’ve chosen to worship with us—even before they get out of their cars. But we also recognize that parking is limited and can be a challenge on any given Sunday. So let’s agree that the visitor parking spots will be reserved for visitors until the start of worship. After that, all are welcome to park there.
Tickets available NOW…only in advance at Remax On The Bay, 61 Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic; at the church office; or call Sonya Hoisington at (860) 235-0170.
President’s Quarterly It is hard to believe that it is the end of June, and time for another quarterly update on what the Prudential Board has been up to and other happenings around NCC. Along with sharing reports from committees and staff, the Prudential Board has adopted a mission statement which reads as follows:
The Prudential Board, as leaders and servants of the congregation, will ensure that NCC’s ministries are fully supported and faithfully carry God’s Word and compassion to our members and neighbors.
You may have noticed the work from the CPACE project progressing. At this time all of the electrical work is complete. We have new windows in the sanctuary and the bride’s room, all of the lighting has been made more energy efficient, and we have a new roof over the multipurpose room. Installation of the solar panels is expected to start in early July and we may be up and running by the end of July. On a sad note, we lost Chelsea Russell, who was a member of our childcare staff on Sunday mornings. Chelsea was great with our kids. Because she was employed by NCC at the time of her passing, we have given the congregation the opportunity to contribute to a monetary gift that will go to the Chelsea Foundation, a non-profit medical supplies organization. Donations for this gift will be accepted until July 8th. If you wish to contribute, make checks payable to NCC and write Chelsea Foundation on the memo line. Checks can be submitted to Judy Snitkin in the church office. Lastly, I would like to encourage everyone to find a way to support our Fundraising Dinners (Traditional Summer Suppers and Lobstah Stew). These fundraisers play a role in the ministries here at NCC and provide opportunities for fellowship and community service. If you can’t help with one of the many tasks that make these dinners happen, remember, we also need eaters! I hope you all have a good summer, Al Larson

Patty’s Corner July/August 2015
Hello friends. I have been facilitating the
Painting From the Source program for almost
six years now. It was a wonderful experience
right from the start, and we celebrated that
creative process of connecting with God
through painting, with an art exhibit several
years ago. Author and artist Aviva Gold, who
created the process, joined us at NCC to offer
a workshop and help us honor this sacred
work.
She preferred that we use another name for
our group, and we began calling our group
Sacred Source Painting. Earlier this year,
Aviva and a group of friends got together to
trademark Source Painting® in an effort to
continue to spread word far and wide about
this powerful process that grew out of Aviva’s
original work.
In doing that, and because of the work I had
been doing with Aviva’s Painting From the
Source process, I was invited to become an
“official,”
“Source Painting® Facilitator.”
I am thrilled to continue to offer Sacred
Source Painting® and enjoy a process that
has been embraced by many who have
attended over the years. Join us in September
when we resume meeting the 2nd Friday of
each month from 10:00-1:30 to paint from our
Source. All materials are supplied and no
experience is necessary. Call me anytime for
more information. (860)739-6208.

With “Circuit Riders”. The circuits were made of
2 or more local churches, but some were so large,
that it might take 5 or 6 weeks to cover all the
territory. These pastors, appointed by the Bishop,
lived out of their saddle bags and traveled
thousands of miles. It was a very hard life and up
to 1847, nearly half who died were under 30 years
old.

Got Shoes?
Safe Futures is collecting 7500 pairs of used (or new) shoes in order to raise $3000 toward its pro-grams. The neat thing is that the shoes in turn will be sent to developing countries where women are taught how to clean and repurpose the shoes as part of their microenterprise businesses. Shoes must be in pairs but any size, style or season, even in need of repair. Get all your friends to contribute! The sky’s the limit. Drop off your unwanted shoes in the box by the church office or drop them off at Safe Fu-tures, 16 Jay Street in New London, Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10 am and 2 pm.
