FAMOUS COUPLESby Kathy Wolfe

Better half, soulmate, significant other – no matter how you say it, it’s all about being a couple. Tidbits has the acts on some famous couples both real and imaginary.

• In March of 1952, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio determined that he would like to meet Marilyn Monroe and within days, they had their first date. Due to his spectacular achievements with the New York Yankees, DiMaggio was much more of a celebrity at the time than the beautiful movie star. Here’s a hearty soup that features the bounty of the sea. If you’re lucky enough to live in an area where fresh fish is abundant, use it! But, if you’re like us and are in a landlocked section of the country, the frozen works just fine.

2 cups thinly sliced onion1 cup chopped celery2 cups diced raw potatoes1 cup shredded carrots2 cups water1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper8 ounces white fish fillet, cut into bite-size pieces1 (12-fluid-ounce) can evaporated fat-free milk1 cup fat-free milk1 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes

1. In a large saucepan sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute onion and celery for 5 minutes. Add potatoes, carrots, water and lemon pepper. Mix well to combine. Bring mixture to a boil. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.2. Stir in fish pieces and continue simmering for 10 minutes or until vegetables and fish are tender. Add evaporated milk, fat-free milk and Cheddar cheese. Mix well to combine. Continue simmering until cheese melts, stirring often.3. When serving, garnish each bowl with parsley flakes. Makes 6 (1 1/3 cup) servings.

FAMOUS COUPLES (continued):• The love story of Cherilyn Sarkisian and

Salvatore Bono began in 1962 in a Los Angeles coffee shop. She was 16 and he was 27. Bono, who worked for a record producer at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios helped get Cher a gig as a backup singer on some of the studio’s classic recordings, including The Righteous Brothers’ hit “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” By late 1964, the pair were married and performing together, calling themselves Caesar and Cleo, releasing a single “Do You Wanna Dance?” Early the following year, they switched their name to Sonny and Cher. Their signature hit “I Got You, Babe” was released in 1965. Their third album, in 1967, featured Sonny’s composition “The Beat Goes On,” another Sonny and Cher trademark. In 1971, they were offered a summer television series, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The show was such a hit, the couple was offered a regular prime time program later that year, and it quickly soared to the network’s Top Ten. The program continued for four seasons, garnering 15 Emmy Award nominations. Unfortunately, by the third season, the marriage was unraveling, and although they separated that year, the show went on. A nasty divorce was finalized in 1975. Yet nothing seemed to hold the couple back, as they reunited in 1976 for The Sonny and Cher Show. Poor ratings resulted in its cancellation the following year. Cher went on to a successful solo singing and acting career, while Sonny was elected mayor of Palm Springs, California, for a term, followed by his election to the U.S. House of Representatives. While serving in that position, he was killed in a Lake Tahoe skiing accident, when he struck a tree. It seems only fitting that his tombstone’s epitaph reads, “And the beat goes on.”

1. Is the book of 3 Kings in the Old or New Testament or neither?2. Who said, “I indeed baptized you with wa-ter, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spir-it”? Matthew, Mark, John the Baptist, Luke3. Jesus says that to see the kingdom of God, you have to ...?

What town or city was Saul of Tarsus near when he converted to Christianity? Damas-cus, Assos, Corinth, Gaza6. Which apostle’s mother-in-law is men-tioned in the Bible (KJV)? Peter, Judas, James, Andrew

The holiday season tastes like peppermint, and most of us can’t get enough. Peppermint mocha brightens the morning, peppermint ice cream makes us dreamy at night, and cute red-and-white-striped candy canes evoke festive childhood memories during the hours in between. While on the topic of peppermint whatevers, I can’t leave out yummy -- and trendy -- peppermint bark. Who can resist the sweet layers of dark and white chocolate topped with crunchy peppermint bits? The bright holiday tins filled with the confection at high-end kitchenware stores are tempting to buy, but they’re also pricey. This year, make your own batch or two of peppermint bark with this easy, economical version using ingredients from the baking section and candy aisle of the grocery store. Older kids can melt candy coating (almond bark) in the microwave, while preschoolers pound candy canes into small bits with a toy hammer to sprinkle on top. Working together with you, the entire prep takes less than half an hour. The kids can scoot off to another activity while the bark cools and hardens.EASY HOLIDAY PEPPERMINT BARK1 pound good-quality chocolate confectionary coating, broken into pieces. (Look for it in the grocery baking section, sometimes labeled “almond bark” or “candy coating”)1 1/2 teaspoons pure peppermint extract12 ounces good-quality white vanilla-flavored confectionery coating, broken into pieces1/2 cup crushed candy canes1. Line a baking sheet with foil sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. 2. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate coating, uncovered, for 90 seconds on high power, and stir. Continue to microwave and stir at 30-second intervals until almost melted. (Be sure to use a dry bowl and utensils.) Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, and stir until smooth.3. Pour onto the foil-lined baking sheet. Spread evenly into a thin layer, approximately 10 by 14 inches. 4. In another microwave-safe bowl, heat white coating as in step 2. Add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional), and stir until smooth. Spoon evenly over chocolate layer, which should be setting up, but not hard, as you want the white layer to bond with the base layer. 5. Immediately sprinkle peppermint pieces over all and lightly press them into the white layer with a spatula or a spoon. Don’t wait on this step, or the top layer will harden and the candies won’t stick. 5. Let stand for an hour or refrigerate until hardened. Break into pieces. Makes about 1 3/4 pounds.

Q: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? -- Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla.

A: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life. So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people. But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more then pet-less people -- especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks.

Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities. Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine. An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them.If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide.

FAMOUS COUPLES (continued):

• Biblical figure Samson was a judge over Israel when he fell for the seductive Delilah. Samson possessed supernatural strength endowed by God when he took a vow to be set apart for God’s service. Samson’s vow included never cutting his hair, and if he did, his strength would leave him. He had been exacting vengeance on the Philistines, and they were out for payback. The Philistine rulers approached Delilah, offering her a great sum of money if she could discover the secret of Samson’s strength. Delilah slyly wormed the information out of him, then “called for someone to come and shave off the seven braids of his hair…and his strength left him.” The Philistines gouged out his eyes and put him in prison performing hard labor. In his pain, Samson cried out to God, and as his hair grew, his strength was restored. During a Philistine celebration, they paraded Samson into the temple to entertain the heckling crowds. He braced himself between the support pillars of the temple and used his unearthly strength to bring down the edifice, destroying his enemies along with himself.

• Olive Oyl was around long before her boyfriend Popeye. Olive first appeared in 1919 as a main character in the comic strip Thimble Theatre, a tall, extremely thin girl with her hair pulled into a bun. Popeye wasn’t introduced to the strip until nearly 10 years later, but immediately became so popular, the comic was renamed Popeye. Olive Oyl’s brother was Castor Oyl, her father was Cole Oyl, and her sister-in-law, Cylinda Oyl. Olive appeared in nearly 25,000 comic strips. Popeye’s first animated cartoons appeared in 1933. In 1937, he was so popular that the community of Crystal City, Texas, the self-proclaimed Spinach Capital of the World, erected a statue of Popeye in front of City Hall to honor the character who had turned spinach into a very popular food. Popeye proved himself a good boyfriend over and over when he rescued Olive from the clutches of his archrival Bluto.

Recovering a Vinyl Floor

Q: The vinyl floor in my kitchen is pretty old -- there are bubbles under the surface, and the edges are peeling back from the walls. How expensive is this to replace? Can I install a dif-ferent material? -- John T., Norcross, Ga.

A: Vinyl flooring can be the most economical material you put into your home. It’s durable, resilient and relatively easy for new do-it-yourselfers to install. If you’re tired of vinyl, other flooring materi-als are perfectly fine. Ceramic tile, synthetic laminate (made to look like hardwood) and natural stone are popular choices for the kitch-en. However, they typically cost more than vi-nyl sheets or tiles. To replace your old floor, cut long strips into the vinyl and then pull the strips up. Use a wallboard knife and a solution of water and liquid dish detergent to loosen the backing. Scrape remaining flooring up using a floor scraper and the detergent solution, clear away all the debris, and vacuum with a wet-dry shop vacuum (put a bit of water in the vacuum to keep the dust down).Inspect the exposed underlayment -- a sheet of plywood or cement board laid over the sub-floor. This is the most important factor in a good-looking, durable vinyl floor. It provides a smooth surface for resilient flooring to ad-here to. However, it can be damaged by water leaks and day-to-day use.Replace damaged underlayment, and fill small holes and seams with latex patching com-pound. Check for squeaks or sags, and inspect the subfloor, joists and foundation to make sure they aren’t deteriorating. If you see dam-age of any kind, consult a contractor. Repairs to the subfloor and supports may cost more than you had budgeted, but the long-term ben-efits are more than worth it.Once the underlayment is deemed healthy, place the new vinyl flooring. Make the job easier by creating a cutting template -- laying sheets of paper along the edges of the walls and marking areas that need special cuts, such as around pipes. Tape the papers together to create a full-size outline of the room.Roll the vinyl out in an open area. Position the paper template over the vinyl, and trace the template perimeter (and markings) using a water-soluble pen. Make the necessary pre-liminary cuts.Once this prep is finished, roll up the vinyl sheet, carry it into the kitchen, and install ac-cording to the manufacturer’s instructions. It’ll be much easier than you think!

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Breast Development in Men Not Uncommon

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a reasonably healthy 62-year-old male. During a recent checkup, my doctor observed that I have “abnormal breast development” and suggested that I see an endocrinologist. Besides being embarrassed to take my shirt off in public, are there other reasons I should be concerned about this? What treatment would an endocrinologist be likely to recommend? -- Anon.

ANSWER: The appearance of breast tissue in men (gynecomastia) is common, and can have several causes. In adolescents, some transient gynecomastia is normal and usually resolves by

itself. In middle-age and older men, medications (such as spironolactone, a common diuretic), liver disease and abnormal hormone levels (both sex hormones and thyroid) are the most common causes, but much of the time, no cause can be found. Since gynecomastia in rare circumstances can be a symptom of a serious disease, and endocrinologists are commonly expert in this evaluation, I would agree that you should get evaluated. It is important to be sure you do not have male breast cancer, and a mammogram may be necessary. A careful exam, blood hormone levels and sometimes a testicular ultrasound to look for hormone-producing tumors are part of the evaluation. Treatment is of any underlying cause that may be found. If no cause is found, many men prefer surgery or liposuction to remove the breast tissue.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I have arthritis in both knees, injuries from the past. My knees hurt when going up and down stairs, not level ground. How do I go about finding a good orthopedic doctor to check out my knees? There are so many doctors who do knee surgery. -- D.M.P.ANSWER: Well, I must admit to some bias here as an internist. I would recommend starting with a rheumatologist, an expert in medical treatment of joint problems, or an internist, rather than going

first to a surgeon. While orthopedic surgeons certainly have expertise in all kinds of treatment (both medical and surgical), I reserve the expertise of the orthopedic surgeons for the people with knee pain who, after a medical evaluation, I think might benefit from surgery. Knee pain is such a common problem that any rheumatologist will be expert in diagnosing your condition. There are many kinds of arthritis, each with different treatments and prognoses. It’s a good rule of thumb not to see a surgeon unless you think you need surgery, and you don’t know enough yet to make that decision.***DR. ROACH WRITES: In February, I answered a question from a woman who wanted to help her husband cut down on alcohol use. I recommended against ever drinking more than five drinks a day. Five per day (four for women) is the usual definition of binge drinking, and linked with high risk for serious medical and social problems. In no way did I mean to suggest that this is a healthy amount of drinking. While some studies have shown a reduced risk of heart disease among moderate (one to two drinks per day for men, one-half to one for women) drinkers, this is not proof that drinking is good for you. And for people with a history of problem drinking, ANY alcohol probably is too much.

FAMOUS COUPLES (continued): • Twenty-five-year-old Elvis Presley was

stationed in Germany in 1959, when he met the 14-year-old daughter of an Air Force officer at a party. Elvis and Priscilla Beaulieu had an eight-year courtship before finally marrying in 1967 in an eight-minute ceremony at Las Vegas’ Aladdin Hotel. He was 32, she was 21. Priscilla’s engagement ring was a 3.5-carat diamond surrounded by a row of smaller diamonds. The couple separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973. Ironically, their courtship lasted longer than the marriage.

• You might not recognize the name “American Gothic,” but you’ve probably seen the image. It’s a 1930 oil painting of a farmer holding a pitchfork, standing alongside a woman in her apron in front of a farmhouse. Painter Grant Wood enlisted his sister Nan to model, while Wood’s dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby posed next to her. Although some folks think they represent husband and wife, Wood intended the couple as a father and his spinster daughter. While driving through Eldon, Iowa, Wood happened to see a little wood farmhouse called the Dibble House, and had a vision of the couple standing in front of it. The couple he painted were, in Wood’s words, “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.” The painting was exhibited for the first time in Chicago’s Art Institute, where Wood earned a $300 prize and immediate fame. Although he is best known for “American Gothic,” Wood painted 27 other works, along with various murals, lithographs, ceramics, and other art.

THIS WEEK’S EVENTSThis week is full of notable events in a number of different categories. Increase your knowledge by reading along. • December 15 is Bill of Rights Day,

commemorating the day this group of freedoms became law in the United States in 1791. The term Bill of Rights refers to the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, and details those freedoms not specifically designated in the main body of that document. These include freedom of religion and speech, the right to bear arms, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure and from a warrant issued without probable cause. The prohibition of double jeopardy is also part of the Bill of Rights, as is the guarantee of a speedy, public trial with an impartial jury.

• December 17 is a big day in the history of aviation. On this day in 1903, the Wright Brothers made their historic flight of the first powered airplane on a beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The first flight of their Wright Flyer lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet (36.5 m), 20 feet (6.1 m) above the ground. Three more flights followed that day. While Orville made the first flight, Wilbur piloted the record flight that lasted 59 seconds and covered a distance of 852 feet (260 m). On the same day 32 years later, the Douglas DC-3 airliner had its maiden flight, a plane that was to revolutionize air travel in the United States. With three refueling stops, the DC-3 was able to cross the U.S. in about 15 hours. On December 17, 1947, the Boeing B-47 Stratojet strategic bomber made its first flight. The country’s first multi-engine, jet-powered bomber was designed to fly at high altitudes and at supersonic speeds. In 1949, the jet broke the record for crossing the United States, accomplishing it in under four hours, with an average speed of 608 mph (978 km/hr).

“Texts From Jane Eyre”by Mallory Ortberg(Henry Holt and Co., $23)Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

Updated versions of classic stories are noth-ing new, but the recently released “Texts From Jane Eyre” offers a pretty innovative take on the genre: If characters from classic books were real, and they had access to data plans, what would they text?

From ancient myths to Harry Potter, and Jane Austen to “The Hunger Games,” famous fiction-al figures have been retrofitted with smartphones and the worldview of a particularly cynical 21st-century twentysomething. The resulting epistles make for hilarious glimpses into their not-so-everyday lives through a lens that is extremely warped but still crystal-clear.

Text messages have a shorthand language all their own, and Ortberg employs it deftly to subtly indicate personality traits and narrative nuances. Of course, the dramatic Edward Rochester types in ALL CAPS. Of course, flirty Scarlett O’Hara is into sexting. Of course, the Lorax won’t shut up about composting. Typos and bad grammar abound (you try to type neatly when a raven won’t stop staring at you). It might sound ridiculous, and it often is, but it’s also really funny.

Given the concentrated nature of the vignettes, the effect is strongest when the reader actually knows the story being skewered -- the spotlight here is mostly pointed at characters, not plots. But even unfamiliar tales can benefit from a good goosing, highlighting common themes that run again and again through literature from ancient times to the most modern works.

The high-school English class staples are here, like “Wuthering Heights” and “Great Expecta-tions,” but so are “Sweet Valley High” and “The Babysitters Club.” And you might be surprised at how much they have in common.

To get a running start on 2015, make time between hol-iday obligations to take care of financial and household business that needs to be wrapped up before the end of the year. Here are some possibilities:• Are there any credits cards you can pay off now and start the New Year with a zero balance?• Make donations to a charity so you get the tax de-duction for 2014. Review Charity Navigator, Charity-Watch and GuideStar to be sure your money is going to

a worthy cause and not administration fees.• Calculate your tax withholding to be sure it’s on target so you don’t pay extra taxes starting in 2015. Births, deaths, marriage and divorce all are reasons to review your with-holding. Don’t cut it too close, but paying extra (and getting a big refund in April) means you’re giving an interest-free loan to the government.• Determine whether you can make an additional contribu-tion to your 401(k). Whatever you put in your account is tax deferred until the money is withdrawn.• If you own a home, make one additional mortgage pay-ment before the end of the year. Do it early enough that it arrives in the mail and is processed so it shows up on your end of year Form 1098 statement.• Check the balance of your medical flexible spending ac-count and try to use it up before the end of the year when you could lose it. You’re only allowed to roll over $500 into

2015. Some companies allow a grace period to March before the funds must be used or lost, but determine your company’s policy to be certain. Make appointments for eye exams and glasses, have periodic lab work done and schedule a medical checkup.• Review your life-insurance policies and retirement ac-counts, not only to see if they need to be changed in any way, but to consider the beneficiaries of both. If there have been births, deaths, marriages or divorces, or mi-nors becoming adults, you might want to make changes.• Open an IRA, if you don’t have one. The income is tax deferred. The limit is $5,500, or if you’re age 50 and older, the limit is $6,500.• If you have property taxes that are partially due in 2015, pay the total amount in advance and deduct on Schedule A.

A Burglar’s Solution To Your Aching Back! Here’s how it works. Just think of your back as a safe

with a 3-number combination lock. It’s obvious that one,or even 2 numbers, will never open it—but with allthree, you’ll crack the safe at the drop of a hat. It’s thesame with your back. It’s not a one-size-fits-all problem. If your doctor only uses one technique to help you—when you need 2 or 3—your back will NEVER get better,no matter how hard you try, and you’ll end up thinking...

“Do I Just Have To Live With It?”Why should you put up with pain when you’ve got a

HealthSource clinic right at your fingertips? Youshouldn’t, even if you think there’s no hope.

Why Can’t They Find YOUR Pain?So many folks who come to HealthSource have

been hurting for months–even years–because no onecould figure out WHERE their pain was coming from. That’s why you need a specialist–a pain detective–whoknows...

How to Track Down “Mysterious Pain!”Many back problems can’t be found with an x-ray, an

MRI or a CT scan. Why? Because it takes the mostsophisticated pain detector on the planet to find it—the human hand—and a trained one at that. Forinstance, here’s a common source of severe hip and legpain that’s usually mistaken for a slipped disc. It’scaused by a muscle in the butt-cheek that pinches thesciatic nerve as it passes by. Pain can shoot down yourleg and jab like a knife when you take a step.

5 Simple Solutions To Your Back Pain!(what the drug companies don’t want you to know)

What can be done about it? Well, since pain killersNEVER fix anything, you have to find the cause:

1) Weakness in 2 key muscles...2 easy exercises can bring relief2) Sacroiliac joints restricted...a gentle shift to unlock the hips3) Adhesions (scar tissue) in key bending muscles... amazing flexi-

bility when they’re free again4) Hip restrictions interfere with back movement... an overlooked

cause of deep aching and stiffness5) Binding in the lower spinal joints...shifting the stuck vertebra

can free it FAST—like WD-40!

Remember, at HealthSource you’re NOT just cover-ing up your pain, you’re getting at the hidden source.

A TRAITOR Within!

There’s nothing more disturbing than having a hid-den enemy—like a snake in the grass—lying in wait

and ready to strike! Like when you wake up feelinggreat—with a spring in your step and big plans for theday—and as you reach for your socks, instead, you get...

The Ultimate DOUBLE-CROSS!A sudden jolt of pain and you’re stuck halfway

between standing and sitting. You can’t take a breath, reach for your glasses or wiggle your pinkie. But evenworse is the hot burning pain that’s creeping downyour leg. And as you stand there, bummed out, frus-trated and locked up like a monkey in a cage, you askyourself:

4 Why is this happening to ME?4 Will I ever be OK again?4 Can I ever live a normal life?4 I’ve been good for months—what did I do wrong?4 If I can’t I trust my back, then...

“Who Can I Trust?”And that’s the right question, because when you

go for help, it seems there’s another conspiracy—aminefield of drugs, painful shots and dangerous surgeries. But...let’s face it, when your back hurts, there are really only 4 things you want to know:

4 Can you help me? 4 What brought this on?4 How long will it take? 4 What’s it gonna cost?

That’s why you don’t want to go to someone whogives you pain killers and muscle relaxants—then tellsyou to call back in 2 weeks if you’re not any better.Because...you know what that’s gonna do! Nothing! Just 2 more weeks to let whatever is wrong—getworse! No, you want to dig in and find out what youcan do to REALLY get better—not just hobble alongwasting the best years of your life being only half-fixed—living half a life.

The Back Pain REVOLUTION!The good news is there’s a quiet revolution going on

in select cities across the United States. It’s happeningat HealthSource Chiropractic™ clinics where they’vecombined the best back pain strategies from differentprofessions to get you out of pain FAST. It’s like...
