Nature legends about ticks…… Ticks don’t jump, fly or repel….they crawl.
Ticks don’t live in trees…..there found in low lying shrubs, bushes, tall grass.
They embed as soon as they are on you….no it can take up to 2-3 hours!
Ticks hibernate in the winter….they are less active but still out there!!
Use of petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol, hot match, etc... helps the tick back out.
If the tick's "head" breaks off in the skin, another tick will grow from it.

How Do People Get Bitten by Ticks?
Ticks do not fly or jump.
Ticks grab onto people (or clothes) when they walk through a grassy or wooded area.
A tick will then crawl to a feeding spot on the person’s skin.

How can you protect yourself
from ticks?
Wear long pants tucked
into your socks to keep
ticks off you.
When hiking or walking in
grassy areas:
Wear long-sleeved
shirts and, light
colored clothes to
make it easier to
spot ticks.

What if you find a tick on you? Tell a grown-up
Carefully remove ticks with a pair of fine point tweezers.
Wash the bite with soap and water.
Do not use gasoline or a match.
Do not use Vaseline.

Prevent Lyme Disease
Make your yard safer—create a dry path between woods and your yard.
Check for ticks daily
Avoid tick areas

clothing + tuck pants in socks!

Pets can get Lyme Disease, too.
Check your pet for ticks after it has been outside.
There are collars, sprays, powders, and other treatments to stop ticks from biting your pet.
Ask your veterinarian for advice on protecting your pet from tick bites.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever "Rocky Mountain," most
recent cases have been
reported in the eastern United
States: North and South
Carolina, Virginia, Maryland,
Georgia, Tennessee, and
Oklahoma. Most cases occur
in the spring and summer with
about 1,000 cases reported per
year. Most of the reported
cases have been in children.

Symptoms of RMSF
5-10 days after bite
Initial signs and symptoms of
the disease include sudden
onset of fever, headache,
and muscle pain, followed by
development of rash.

How many cases in VA……
Treatment: Antibiotics

Ehrilichiosis fever, chills, muscle aches, weakness and headache. Patients also may experience confusion,
nausea, vomiting and joint pain.
Unlike Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a rash is not common.
Infection usually produces mild to moderately severe illness, with high fever and headache, but may occasionally be life-threatening or even fatal.
