For the first time in three years the Zephyrhills volleyball team won more than one game in a season The Zephyrhills volleyball team just accomplished something it had not been able to do for the previous three years — win more than once in a season. Not bad for a team that had gone winless in three of the previous six seasons. The Bulldogs swept nearby rival Zephyrhills Christian Academy 3-0 (25-12, 25-7 and 25-7) on Monday night at Alan Reed Court. That gave them a 2-16 record after several seasons going winless or win- ning just once. It marked the most wins since the 2018 team won three games. What made that modest achieve- ment even more significant is that it came on Senior Night. Before the game, outgo- ing players honored were Maya Llanes, Aamarhi Lewis, Breanne Rood, Madison Poe, Taryn Henry and Lis Santiago. Afterward, first-year coach Em- ily Frazer, a former college volleyball player who deserves a lot of credit for a turnaround in which the Bulldogs played much better than in years past despite their win total, spoke highly of the departing se- niors. “It was awesome to give them a win,” she said. “I think on Senior Night it should be one of those nights you go out with confidence and send them off with a win. I think this is the best they’ve played in a very long time.” Frazer lauded the seniors for their work ethic and leadership, which in turn helped to foster team chemistry. “They did the best with all the chang- es,” the coach said. Frazer, who vowed to turn things around for the downtrodden program, came in with some impressive credentials. She was a standout high school volleyball player in Pennsylvania and later played outside hitter and middle hitter at Temple University, a Division I school in Philadel- phia. Frazer had plenty of help this season from Lyndra Davis, a former volleyball player and Zephyrhills graduate. The half-dozen seniors had gone through some trying times. Frazer was their third coach in four years, but unlike the others she had plenty of experience and knowledge of the game. According to the seniors, those are factors that helped change the mindset of the team. Wiregrass Ranch improves to 4-1 with a dominating 40-7 win, dropping the host Bulldogs to 5-1 Home or away, tough foe or weak opponent — none of that seemed to matter to the previously undefeated Zephyrhills High football team. The host Bulldogs, who were seeking their first un- beaten season since 2019, got a taste of what it’s like on the other end of the spectrum in last Friday night’s 40-7 home loss to Wire- grass Ranch. That left Zephyrhills at 5-1 with a pivotal Class 5A, District 9 matchup coming up this week at Cypress Creek, which at 2-4 has lost four in a row. Before facing the Bulls, the last loss for the Bull- dogs came in last year’s region semifinal against Orlando Jones. Meanwhile, Wiregrass Ranch, which competes in 7A-8 against some tough Hillsborough County foes, improved to 4-1. The Bulls’ game against Wesley Chapel was cancelled when several Wildcats were diagnosed with Covid-19. Zephyrhills remains on track for what could be a sixth playoff berth in the past seven seasons. Coach Nick Carroll, despite his dis- appointment in his team’s most recent performance, is optimistic about the remainder of this season. “We could be 9-1 and could win out as district champions,” he said, adding that he told his players not to be discouraged by one bad game. “We’ll see how they react to a little bit of adversity.” Wiregrass Ranch coach Mark Kantor, whose team is 3-0 on the road and now has a three-game winning streak, liked what he saw on both sides of the ball against Zephyrhills. “I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Kantor said. “This was a big game. I thought we were executing offensively. Defen- sively, we were playing with some swag.” That was readily apparent after Wiregrass Ranch’s first posses- sion. The Bulls were forced to punt, but after that they got touch- downs on their next six possessions. Three of those scores highlighted the Rocco Becht-Bryson Rod- gers connection. Becht connected with Rodgers on touchdown passes of 18, 10 and 31 yards to help stake Wiregrass Ranch to a 20-0 lead. Becht, a senior and son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Anthony Becht, completed 20-of-25 for 241 yards and five touchdowns. He added scoring passes of 7 and 27 yards to Jared West and Izaiah Williams, respectively. Numerous swimmers and coaches alike from Zephyrhills, Pasco, Wesley Chapel and Cypress Creek were focused primarily on reducing times in various events. Many from all of those teams achieved those goals. There was, however, another goal for some. Namely, to do something about the dominance of the Mitchell boys and Sunlake girls. Unfortunately for the other teams, the Mitchell boys and Sunlake girls each won their fourth consec- utive team titles. Wiregrass Ranch came a bit closer than the other area schools by finishing as the boys runner-up and fourth in the girls competition. “This is one of the best teams,” said Kyle Gramm, the Bulls’ boys coach. “We’ve got younger guys that have seen the older guys do it for a while, so it’s com- ing together.” “They did a great job,” said Alisa Cimono, who coaches the girls team at Wiregrass Ranch. “Most of our girls moved up in their rankings.” The Porter brothers — Jack in the 500 free and Noah in the 100 butterfly — claimed two of the Bulls’ three individual wins. Millions of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, more than 2.3 mil-lion women across the globe were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. The BCRF also notes that breast cancer is the most frequently diag-nosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 coun-tries worldwide.

Breast cancer statistics can give the impres-sion that each of the millions of women diag-nosed with the disease is fi ghting the same bat-tle, but breast cancer is something of an umbrel-la term. In fact, there are various types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ, inva-sive ductal carcinoma, infl ammatory breast can-cer, and metastatic breast cancer. Learning about each type of breast cancer can help women and their families gain a greater understanding of

this disease.Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

DCIS is a non-invasive cancer that is diag-nosed when abnormal cells have been found in the lining of the breast milk duct. The National Breast Cancer Foundation notes that DCIS is a highly treatable cancer. That’s because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any surround-ing breast tissue. The American Cancer Society notes that roughly 20 percent of new breast can-cer cases are instances of DCIS.Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC)

IDC is the most common type of breast can-cer. The NBCF reports that between 70 and 80 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are instanc-es of IDC. An IDC diagnosis means that cancer began growing in the milk ducts but has since

spread into other parts of the breast tissue. This is why IDC is characterized as “invasive.” Though IDC can aff ect people, including men, of any age, the ACS notes that the majority of IDC cases are in women age 55 and older.Infl ammatory breast can-cer (IBC)

The NBCF describes IBC as an “aggressive and fast growing breast cancer.” Breastcancer.org notes that IBC is rare, as data from the ACS indicates that only about 1 percent of all breast cancers in the United States are infl ammatory breast cancers. Many breast cancers begin with the formation of a lump, but Breastcancer.org reports that IBC usually begins with reddening and swelling of the breast, and symptoms can worsen considerably within days or even hours. That underscores the importance of seeking prompt treatment should any symp-toms present themselves.Metastatic breast cancer

Metastatic breast cancer may be referred to as stage IV breast cancer. When a woman is diag-nosed with metastatic breast cancer, that means

the cancer has spread, or metastasized, into oth-er parts of the body. The NBCF indicates that metastatic breast cancer usually spreads to the lungs, liver, bones, or brain. Symptoms of met-astatic breast cancer vary depending on where the cancer has spread. For example, if the cancer has spread to the lungs, women may experience a chronic cough or be unable to get a full breath.

These are not the only types of breast can-cer. A more extensive breakdown of the various types of breast cancer can be found at https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/types.

Are there different types of breast cancer?

“As a team, we work better together,” Hen-ry said, adding that Frazer “makes us be a team. We all have to get along and like each other.” Rood echoed that sentiment and said it was nice to have a coach who had been a successful player teaching them things on the court. “The atmosphere is just diff erent,” Rood said. “We defi nitely focused more on skills and basics.”

Poe said she will miss her friends on the team. Her schedule will be a bit lighter in the winter as she juggled playing volleyball and running on the cross country team this fall. “It was sometimes diffi cult,” Poe said of going from one practice to another after school, leaving volleyball and heading out to run. “I would leave (volleyball) early and catch up.” In an eff ort to not only encourage together-ness among her players, but to involve the play-ers’ families and fans of the team as well, Frazer arranged for a special event that recognized the

National Pediatric Cancer Founda-tion.____In between the second and third game against the Warriors she invit-ed fans from the stands to form two rows and serve volleyballs over the net to see if they could hit orange bags representing the cancer foun-dation on the other side.____That served as a fundraiser for the foundation, which is something Frazer plans to do at the end of each regular season.

man like Rocco who can read a defense and spread the ball around, and a guy being re-cruited by Division I teams you’re going to be alright,” Kantor said. Added Carroll, “Rocco Becht and that receiver, they have continuity.” Late in the third quarter, Wiregrass Ranch got its only rushing touchdown when Kenneth Walker burst up the middle on a 9-yard run for a 40-0 lead. Zephyrhills reached the Bulls’ 7-yard line twice, but on both occasions high snaps from center resulted in big losses. The Wiregrass Ranch defense racked up fi ve sacks of

quarterback Jaxson Rivera and stopping Zephyrhills twice in-side the 10-yard line. “We had to stop them on defense and force turnovers,” Carroll said. “Obviously, that didn’t happen and they capi-talized on our mistakes.” The Bulls nearly post-ed a shutout, allowing only a 94-yard kickoff return by T. J. Jackson in the fourth quarter. Another standout for Zephyrhills was Jaylin Thom-as, who ran for a game-high 138 yards and now has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in fi ve of his team’s six games.

Much of everyday crime is the result of opportunity. An un-locked car door or open win-dow on your home can serve as an invitation to crimi-nals. October is National Crime Prevention Month and its the perfect time for citizens to ensure that they are safeguard-ing both their property and themselves. Removing all valuables from your car when you get out of it is a sure way to prevent loss of these items. Items left in plain view, especially valuable electronics like phones or laptops, can be tempting for thieves. Secure these items inside your resi-dence or bring them with you when you leave your car, even if it’s just for a few mo-ments. Thieves can work fast, and often a car burglary can take place in less than 30 seconds. Be sure to lock your home and car doors, even if you’re inside. Creating a rou-tine of doing this each night is a great way to ensure that you and your property are safe and secure. Protecting your home is simple as well. Ensuring that all locks are working proper-ly is a smart first step. Keeping a list of your valuable posses-sions is important as well. Make a note of model and serial numbers, value and de-scription of items. Consider getting a safe for more valuable items, such as jewelry or firearms. Keep shrubbery near windows and

doors trimmed so criminals don’t have a good hiding place as well.

You can also prevent crime when you’re on vacation.

Have a neighbor or a family member stop by your home when you’re gone to check the mail and your home. Consider having someone mow your lawn if you plan to be gone for an ex-tended period. Setting timers for lights is anoth-

er great idea. A home that still looks occupied won’t tip off potential criminals to

your absence. Don’t forget that the Pasco Sher-

iff’s Office is here to serve you. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Below, you’ll find our non-emer-gency phone number. Always call 911 in the event of an emergency. Connecting with us on social media is a great way to stay in-formed as well. We’re on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We post crime prevention tips, community news and alerts. Preventing crime is easier than you think and takes just a few simple steps. With the help of a consistent routine, resi-dents can help the sheriff’s office prevent crime in their community. Eliminating op-portunity disrupts the triangle of crime, which also includes desire and ability, and is a smart step to ensuring you stay safe. Important Sheriff’s Office Phone Num-bers: Non-Emergency (727) 847-8102 and in case of emergencies, dial 911.

SOAP UPDATE

HOLLYWOOD -- You’d think when Hollywood awoke from its COVID-19 slumber, it would be ready to blow movie fans away with what it had come up with while we were fighting a worldwide pandemic. Think again!

The major studios and streaming platforms are so desperate for tried-and-true material that they’ve picked the bones of past successes to try to attract movie and TV watchers.

The success of “Coming to America,” made in 1988 for $36 million with a $350 mil-lion gross, begged for a se-quel, but Eddie Murphy said “No” ... until 33 years later, when Amazon Stu-dios offered so much money he couldn’t refuse to make “Coming 2 America.”

Now “Twins,” also made in 1988, will be sequelized. Ar-nold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are reunit-ing to try to make lightning strike again. But here’s the twist ... they’ve added Tracey Morgan as a third, unknown brother and are calling it “Triplets”!

Ivan Reitman, producer and director of such classics as “Meatballs” (1984), “Ghost-busters” (1984), “Kinder-garten Cop (1990), “Dave” (1993) and “Animal House” (1978), is producing and di-recting this one. His last film, “Draft Day” (2014), grossed $29.5 million against a $25 million cost. Schwarzeneg-ger’s last film was “Termi-nator: Dark Fate,” which grossed $261 million against a $190 million cost. Do they have enough clout to make this sequel succeed, or are they too old?

Arnold has the martial-arts comedy “Kung Fury 2,” with Michael Fassbender, due in 2022, while Danny DeVi-to has “The Survivor,” with Ben Foster and Billy Mag-nussen. It’s a biographical drama about a boxer who fought fellow prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp to survive. Tracey Mor-gan, last seen in “Coming 2 America,” has season four of “The Last O.G.” premiering Oct. 26.

Add to the list of coming “re-imaginings” the 1992 hit “The Bodyguard” (with Chris Hemsworth or Chan-ning Tatum as the front run-ners for the title role), the re-make of “Dune,” with Timo-thy Chalamet, arriving Oct. 22, and a third “Ace Ventu-ra,” with Jim Carrey starring and directing.

Old TV shows need nev-er die, they just turn up on a new streaming platform. Showtime is reviving “Dex-ter”; Paramount+ is giving us a “Grease” spinoff, “Rydell High”; Netflix is readying a “Conan” series with Ja-son Momoa; HBOMax has revived “Gossip Girl” and ABC just debuted a new “Wonder Years,” also avail-able on Hulu. Then there’s “Bewitched,” “The Jetsons,” “Frasier,” “Nash Bridges” and “How I Met Your Moth-er,” all preparing to reveal themselves to new genera-tions who weren’t even born when they were first made.

Where are the original stories that will knock our socks off, start new trends and wow us? Or is it going to be time to break out the old song “Ev-erything Old Is New Again”?
