TRANSFER ASSESSMENT AND ADVISING PROGRAM
The Transfer Assessment and Advising Program is the first step in your transition to college life at Jackson State University. This program will provide information about academic degree programs, the articulation agreement, academic support, student services, campus life, financial aid, and university policies and programs. The Noel-Levitz College Student Inventory survey will be administered as a part of a student-centered initiative to determine how you learn best and what might be done to help you succeed as a JSU student. You also will meet fellow transfer students and make valuable connections with current students, faculty, staff, and administrators at JSU. Professional-Transfer Advisors and Transfer-Faculty Advisors also will be available to further discuss course articulations, major requirements, and course selections for the Fall 2015 semester.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
Undergraduate Studies is a student advocate unit which provides a quality assurance program for first-and-second year students. In collaboration with the academic colleges, it ensures preparation for the rigor of their intended majors, engagement in leadership, service, citizenship, and community development activities.
Undergraduate Studies is comprised of three major programs: The First Year Experience, W. E. B. Du Bois Honors College, and University College; and six ancillary programs:

Summer Bridge Program offers incoming science technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students an opportunity to earn six to nine hours of college credit with the assistance of tutoring, mentoring, and technology-assisted teaching, free room, board, tuition and books

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Optional Tours: 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.)All first-time transfer students are to report for academic advisement and selection of Fall 2015 courses. Students also will have the opportunity to speak with personnel in Financial Aid, Residential Life, and the Business Office.

Transfer Fast Facts ӹ Transfer students with less than 60 earned hours are advised in Undergraduate Studies located in the Charles F. Moore Building.
ӹ Transfer students with 60 or more earned hours are advised in their Academic Departments. ӹ Transfer students who have earned 12 or more hours of college credits are exempt from University Success 100/101/105.
ӹ All transfer students are required to take the Undergraduate English Proficiency Examination. It is administered each semester and each summer session.
ӹ All transfer students are required to have 60 hours of community service prior to graduation. ӹ After earning 62 semester hours from any accredited institution, a student may not take additional courses at a community or/junior college and have them applied toward a degree from Jackson State University.
ӹ No more than 93 semester hours may be transferred from an accredited four-year institution. ӹ Jackson State University uses the Articulation Agreement between the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.
ӹ Grades earned in transfer courses will be shown on the permanent record at Jackson State University with a “T” in front of the earned grade from the transfer institution but will not be used in calculating Jackson State University grade point averages.
ӹ Jackson State University accepts transfer courses with “C” grades or above. ӹ Students usually receive no transfer credit for courses designed specifically for technical and vocational career programs. The dean and/or chair of the department concerned should be consulted on questions pertaining to the transfer of credits.
ӹ Jackson State University does not accept for-credit courses that are classified as remedial or developmental.
ӹ All students are required to have the last session of residence or its equivalence at Jackson State University and to complete satisfactorily a minimum of 30 semester hours of courses before graduation.
ӹ No credit will be given to students with a cumulative grade point average below 2.0.

Frequently Asked Questions by Transfer Students
Who is my Academic Advisor?Transfer students with less than 60 hours are assigned an advisor in Undergraduate Studies. Transfer students with 60 or more earned hours or an associate’s degree are assigned an advisor in their academic departments.

How important is it to connect with my Academic Advisor?Very! Your Academic Advisor is a professional assigned to you to assist with your course selection or deletion, semester registration, approval of absentee excuses, etc. Connecting with your advisor is a key element in becoming and remaining successful at JSU. How do I know which of my credits transferred?JSU utilizes the Articulation Agreement between the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and the Mississippi Board for Community and Junior Colleges. The university usually allows full credit for a course taken at another accredited institution if a comparable course is offered at JSU. Jackson State University accepts transfer courses with “C” grades or better.
Are Vocational Courses transferable to JSU?Students usually do not transfer credit for courses designed specifically for technical and vocational career programs. The dean of the college should be consulted on questions pertaining to the transfer of credits.

What is a JSU SuperCard?The Jackson State University SuperCard is a multipurpose card. It functions as an identification card for all students, faculty and staff. It must be visibly worn at all times. The JSU SuperCard Program works almost exactly like your regular debit card. The card gives students, faculty, and staff access to funds within their accounts to purchase goods and services from participating merchants, even off campus.
How do I activate my SuperCard?You are welcome to apply for a card account by completing an application in the ID Center. You can deposit funds into your SuperCard account by visiting Financial Services on the 2nd Floor of the B.F. Roberts Building at the cashier’s station. For more information on your SuperCard, visit http://www.jsums.edu/supercard/.
What is the procedure for changing my major?You can obtain a change of major form from your Academic Advisor within Undergraduate Studies in the Charles F. Moore Building (CFM). This form will be forwarded to the JSU Registrar’s office to finalize your request for change of major.
How do I activate my JSU email address?Visit the JSU homepage at http://www.jsums.edu. Click on the link entitled “email.” Click on the icon that states “First Time Email Users – Information.” This will walk you step-by-step on specific instructions regarding your email address.
How do I login to Blackboard to access my online classes?All users must have an active NetID in order to log into Blackboard. For instruction on how to obtain a Network Identifier (NetID), log into JSU PAWS and select “Activate NetID”. After you have setup your NetID, log into Blackboard with your J Number for the username and your NetID for your password. If you forget your NetID password, go to http://www.jsums.edu/jsuonline/getting-started-information/ for instruction.

TRANSFER SUCCESS MENTOR’S PROGRAM- (TSM’S )
What is a Transfer Success Mentor?Transfer Success Mentors (TSMs) are an integral component of the JSU Office of Community College Relations team. They serve as academic and social role models for community college transfer students by sharing their own successes and setbacks in developing study habits, taking advantage of campus resources, managing their time wisely, and navigating the campus. TSMs take on the role of small group leaders throughout the academic school year and work to develop good rapport with community college transfer students, as they are often the first members of the instructional team to whom new students confide their fears and uncertainties. We select exceptional students who give evidence of interpersonal and intellectual skills. Essential functions of this position include the ability to communicate effectively to groups, relate to others, and exhibit appropriate dedication to academic and campus life.
Transfer Student Mentors are charged with the mission of guiding transfer students to success. They will purposefully help community college transfer students:Connect with what motivates students:
ӹ Paint a clear picture of their college journey ӹ Outline the skills necessary to be successful in college campus life ӹ Convey enthusiasm and spirit for the University ӹ Provide supportive student success resources (Transfer Resource Guide) is very useful ӹ Strengthen college success and self-management skills and tips on healthy study habits ӹ Assist CCR Coordinator build face-to-face relationships with faculty and students ӹ And, remember, you ARE NOT their counselor

Purpose StatementThe JSU Transfer Ambassadors will assist Community College Relations in achieving the university’s goal of recruiting and retaining academically sound community college transfer students. The ambassadors will help prospective community college transfer students achieve a smooth transition from their respective community college to Jackson State University. Ambassadors will also ensure that students are informed about admissions requirements, financial aid deadlines, housing information and any other appropriate information for admission to Jackson State University.
Selection ProcessJSU Transfer Ambassadors are expected to be leaders in all aspects. Therefore, it is essential that they are committed to achieving academic excellence. Students should meet the following requirements:
ӹ Have a 2.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale ӹ Be enrolled full time at Jackson State University ӹ Must have attended a community college ӹ Interview with CCR staff ӹ Posses strong leadership skills
Functions of JSU Transfer Ambassadors ӹ To travel occasionally with the community college recruiter ӹ Provide a thorough campus tour for prospective community college transfer students, parents, and educational groups.
ӹ Assist with recruitment activities at their former community college. ӹ Communicate with prospective community college transfer students regularly in order to keep them abreast with pertinent deadlines and university activities.
ӹ Attend and assist with JSU Transfer Day, Phi Theta Kappa Day, and other events held be Community College Relations.
ӹ Assist with other recruitment functions as designated by the advisor.

Mission Statement: “The mission of the alumni association is to support the people, programs and priorities of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. ӹ Membership shall be based upon superior academic achievement during your “first term” at JSU. ӹ Must be registered at JSU as a full-time student (12 or more hours) with a declared major. ӹ Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on 4.0 scale for membership. ӹ Must complete the required application and pay the ONE TIME membership fee of $45. ӹ Only invited to join Tau Sigma one time (not eligible to join at a later date).

FINANCIAL AID OVERVIEWThe Financial Aid Office at Jackson State University is responsible for coordinating financial assistance (federal, state, institutional and private) to assist students with funds to pay their educational cost. The information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serves as the basis for determining eligibility.
To be considered for Financial Aid for summer 2015, students must complete the FAFSA for 2015-16 online at www.fafsa.gov and enter JSU’s School Code (002410) so that JSU will receive the data electronically.
The Financial Aid Office must receive the results from the FAFSA in the form of: •The official output document SAR/ISIR with no conflicting information; •Valid Expected Family Contribution calculated by the government; •Clear database matches; •If selected for verification, it must be completed.
To receive funds from the Financial Aid Programs (grants, loans or work), students must meet all of the general student eligibility requirements:
•Have demonstrated financial need, except for some loan programs; •Have the appropriate education credentials on file; •Be enrolled as a regular student seeking a degree (transient students not eligible); •Be a U. S. citizen or eligible noncitizen; •Have a valid social security number; •Must meet satisfactory academic progress standards; •Must certify that federal financial aid will be used solely for educational purposes; •Must comply with selective service registration; •May not have eligibility suspended or terminated due to being convicted of a drug related offense; •May not be in default or overpayment on any federal grants or loans.
Additional Requirements for Loans: •Loans offered must be accepted over the web; •Students accepting loans must complete a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling with the Department of Education online at www.studentloans.gov; •Must complete Exit Counseling at www.studentloans.gov if the student separates from the university (graduation or withdrawal) or drops below half time (six hours).
Students’ Rights and Responsibilities: •Accurate completion of FAFSA; •Review and understand the agreements contained on forms; •Comply with all application deadlines and requests for additional information; •Repay any financial aid funds received as a result of inaccurate information.

Students may check their financial aid status through their JSU PAWS account. They should monitor their email accounts (email address listed on FAFSA and their JSU PAWS account) frequently for messages and updates.

All fees are payable in advance by cash, credit card, certified check, money order or personalized checks. Non-personalized checks will not be accepted for payment of fees. Fees are due and payable at the time of registration. Financial assistance awarded to a student is applicable to the total fees at the time of registration. Variation from this policy will require prior approval from the Financial Services Office. Bank checks returned due to insufficient funds must be redeemed immediately along with the payment of a forty dollar ($40.00) insufficient funds fee to avoid termination of registration.
Each student will be billed for 100% of the tuition and fees due. Accounts referred to a collection agency will be assessed a reasonable collection fee. JSU STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARD IS REQUIRED FOR ALL TRANSACTIONS.
