Session 1
9:30 AM-10:20 AM Biochemistry (Session 1) Troponin Should Replace CK-MB for the
Detection of Myocardial Infarction
Michael A. Pesce, PhD
Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia-
University Medical Center and Medical Director of the Biochemical
Genetics Laboratory at New York- Presbyterian Hospital
Location: Room E/F Contact Hours: 1.0/ Intermediate
Although Troponin is the recommended biomarker for
the detection of Myocardial Infarction (MI), CK-MB
together with troponin is still used by many
laboratories to detect MI. This presentation will
discuss how CK-MB and troponin are used to identify
patients with MI and why troponin is the better cardiac
marker. The clinical pitfalls of CK-MB and the
advantages of removing CK-MB from the laboratory
test menu as a marker of MI will be discussed.
This session is sponsored by BioFire Dx. 9:30 AM-10:20 AM
Hematology/Hemostasis (Session 1) That’s Why You’re Here! Using Quality Assurance Principles to Provide Accurate Test Results
Steven Bellows, MS, MT(ASCP)
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
Former Hematology/Coagulation Laboratory Manager
Location: Amphitheater
Contact Hours: 1.0/ Advanced Every test system in every section of the laboratory
has three major components, namely
instrumentation, reagents and the testing operator, all
with differing stabilities and error rates. Similarly, an
abnormal Hematology result can be due to either the
specimen, the analyzer or the patient. Case studies of
abnormal Hematology results will be presented to
illustrate how QA methods, when correlated with
peripheral blood smears, can be used to troubleshoot
an interference and to differentiate the cause of the
abnormal result as being due to the instrument, the
specimen or the patient.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) will take
place April 19-25, 2015.
MLPW provides the profession with a unique opportunity to
increase public understanding of and appreciation for clinical
laboratory personnel.
MLPW, which takes place the last full week in April each year,
is coordinated by a collaborative committee with representatives
from 14 national clinical laboratory organizations, including
ASCLS. Now in it's 40th year, it is important to reflect on the
important history of MLPW.
Medical Laboratory Professionals Week originated in 1975 as National Medical Laboratory
Week, or NMLW, under the auspices of the American Society for Medical Technology, now
called the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). In subsequent years,
other organizations have served as cosponsors and campaign supporters.
