REVISING KNOWLEDGE

1. On the yellow paper, on the back, go to the bottom where there are three columns. Individually complete these three columns.

2. Revise the box above adding your new knowledge in a different color pen.

3. Complete small blue paper. Use the information from your third box(yellow paper) and put it on this blue paper.

4. Go to your lab station and share the information from your blue paper. Attach the blue paper to your group poster.

5. Gallery walk as a group. One minute at each station.

6. One person will be the “documenter”. On the small yellow paper write down the revisions your group now has after the gallery walk.

7. Add this yellow paper to the group poster.

Discussion of Results

No Personal PronounsPast TenseNever report numbers without units

Paragraph 1:• State the purpose of the investigation (The purpose of this investigation was to…)• What was your hypothesis (It was proposed that…, It was hypothesized that)• Present results/data: The results of the experiment showed… This should include the quantitative as well as qualitative data from your experiment: Report averages only• What do the results of the experiment indicate? (What does your data mean?)

Discussion of Results

DISCUSSION OF RESULTSParagraph 2:What were the expected results? (Refer to prior research)If the results were not as expected, explain possible reasons for the results obtainedExplain possible sources of error in the experiment ( at least 3)Explain how the experiment could be modified (How could the procedures be improved to reduce experimental error? How could you eliminate unwanted variables?) *If the results ARE as expected, explain how the data is reliable/valid(Reliability refers to the consistency of results and validity refers to the experimental design- the experiment measured what it was supposed to measure.)

WRITING THE CONCLUSIONDirections: Use these concepts to help you construct your conclusion.Remember: No personal pronouns. The conclusion addresses the following things:Restates the ProblemSummarizes the procedureRestates the hypothesisState whether the hypothesis was correct (supported) or incorrect (refuted). Explain why the hypothesis was supported or refuted. This should refer to prior research; the relationship between variables and the results of the experiment. (Identify patterns and trends during the experiment.) Explains the significance of the results-why they are important.

WRITING THE CONCLUSION

Writing:The effect of the (IV) on the (DV) was investigated in this experiment by (summarize the procedure) .The suggested hypothesis was that if (restate the hypothesis). The hypothesis was (supported or refuted) because (explain how the results matched or didn’t match the hypothesis. Explain why the results did or didn’t support the hypothesis. Refer to your prior research and discuss how your results were similar or different to your research and if you discovered any patterns or trends. The significance of the results are _______(Explain the significance of the results-why are the results important.)

FUTURE RESEARCHFUTURE RESEARCH

This is where you propose new questions about the experiment that you have just completed. What else could be done with the lab that I have completed? An example would be, if you had built a structure of some sort and changed the base of this structure, what would happen? How long would this structure stay up?

The current hypothesis could be refined to reflect the observations made during the investigation to:

______________________________________________________

What could you do to revise this

experiment to reflect the observations stated above?

__________________________________________________________

Page 9: THURSDAY 10/29 DAY 1 Science Starters Sheet 1. Please have these Items on your desk. Agenda 2- Fill out your Agenda. 3.Science Starter: Name the three

The purpose of this project was to discover/find out how _____________________ (IV) affected ___________________ (DV). The hypothesis was that if __________________ (IV) is (“changed”), then __________________ (DV) will ____________________. This would happen because scientific reason why). The effect of (IV) _________ on (DV) ______ was determined by (write summary of procedure in past tense). The results collected during this investigation were; (Summarize the mean results for each trial. Start with largest/fastest, etc.). The results showed that the hypothesis was (supported/refuted). (Next sentence Only if Refuted) This happened because _____________________________________ (Scientific reason why). To further understand this topic, future research could include ________________________________________________________ (list 3 other questions you would investigate in future experiments to find out more about your topic.)

LEWIS DOT STRUCTURE

The Lewis Dot Structure is a bit different from the Bohr model.

It only shows the element symbol and it ’s outer most electron shell.
