Greetings Students and Parents Welcometothe2017THSBandSeason!Ihopeyouarereadyforanotherincredibleyear!However,everyyearcomesdowntoafewquestions:HowgooddoYOUwanttobe?HowhardareYOUwillingtowork?WhatkindofbanddoYOUwantthistobe?

Beforewecanbeginourexperience,itisimportanttounderstandthattherearecertainguidelinesthatyoumustfollowinordertobesuccessful.Pleasereadthroughtheinformationinthishandbookverycarefully.Itcontainssomeimportantdates,somenewrules,andlotsofinformationyouwillneedtobefamiliarwith.

TheMarchingLionsareknownforgivingtheiraudiencesomethingspecial.ThisyearwewillpresentExMachina,“fromthemachine”.Allthemusic,movement,andchoreographywillhaveamechanicalfeel.WitharrangementsanddrillbyAlanJohnson,wearesuretohaveanexcitingmarchingseason.

BeingamemberoftheTallwoodHighSchoolBandaffordsyoumanyopportunities,butalsobindsyoutomanyresponsibilities.Youareexpectedto:

Attendance Policy Aswithanyorganization,attendanceandparticipationarecrucialtotheoverallsuccessofthegroup.Allrehearsalsandeventsaremandatory,andstudentswillbeheldaccountablefortardiness,absenceandlackofparticipation.Thesuccessofthebandprogramdependsonthededicationandattendanceofallmembersofthegroup.

Alleventsandrehearsalsarescheduledandprovidedtostudentsinadvance.Studentsareresponsibleforensuringthatallotherpersonalmatters,includingworkandappointments,arescheduledandtakencareofondayswhentheydonothaveabandcommitment.Ifyoubelieveaconflictisunavoidable,seetheDirectorasfarinadvanceaspossible.Oftentimes,arrangementscanbemadeinorderforstudentstobeabletoparticipateinrehearsals.

Marching Band Course Requirement

MarchingbandatTallwoodisapartofthestudent’soverallfirstsemestergrade.AllSymphonicBandandWindEnsemblemembersarerequiredtoparticipateinmarchingband.ThosestudentswhodonotwishtoparticipateinmarchingbandmayparticipateintheConcertBandandwillhavemultiplealternateassignmentstofulfillthemarchingportionoftheirgrade.

StudentsmayonlybeexemptfrommarchingbandiftheyparticipateonaFallVarsitysportsteamatTallwoodHighSchool,oriftheyareenrolledinfourormoreAdvancedPlacementcourses.

Band and Other Activities

Thougheligibleforexemption,therearebandstudentswhoplayaVarsitysport,areenrolledinfourAdvancedPlacementclasses,orareenrolledintheGlobalStudiesandWorldLanguageAcademyandtakeeightclasses.TheDirectorofBands,CoachesandTeachersatTallwoodwillworktogethersothatstudentsmayparticipateinalloftheactivitiestheywish.However,studentsareresponsibleforworkingoutapracticeandrehearsalschedulewiththeircoachandtheDirectorinadvance.

Communication

AllcommunicationofabsencesortardiesmustbedoneinpersonorbyphonebetweenthestudentandtheDirector.Studentsmaynottellanotherbandmemberthattheywillbeabsentortardy,eveniftheirexcuseisvalid.StudentsmusttakeresponsibilityfortheirmissedrehearsaltimebylettingtheDirectorknowinadvance.

Ifastudentmustmissarehearsalbecauseofillness,itishelpfulifthestudentorstudent’sparentcallstonotifytheDirectorthatthestudentwillbeabsent.Thestudent’sparentmustalsofollowupwithawrittennoteconfirmingthevalidityofthestudent’sabsence.

Rehearsals

Unlessotherwisespecified,weeklymarchingbandrehearsalsareheldTuesdaysfrom2:30–5:30pmandThursdaysfrom5:00–8:00pm.Saturdayrehearsalsmaybeheldonoccasion.ThePercussionwillrehearseMondaysfrom2:30-4:30pminadditiontoweeklyrehearsals.ColorGuardwillalsohaveanadditionalweeklyrehearsal,dayandtimeTBA.

Concertrehearsalswillbescheduledfortheweekspriortoaconcert.

T A R D I N E S S

Unexcusedtardinesstorehearsalwillnotbetolerated.Thursdayrehearsalsarescheduledlateinthedaysostudentsmayfulfilltheiracademicresponsibilitiesafterschool.Unexcusedtardinesswillresultindisciplinaryaction:

• FirstOffense:StudentconferencewiththeDirectorand15pointsofftheirparticipationgrade.• SecondOffense:Phonecalltothestudent’sparentand15pointsofftheirparticipationgrade.• ThirdOffense:Suspensionfromoneperformance,detentionafterschool,15pointsoffthe

student’sparticipationgradeandthestudentcanearnnohigherthana“B”inband.

A B S E N C E S

Anabsenceoccurswhenastudentmissesarehearsalinitsentirety,orwhenastudentismorethan30minuteslate.Excusedabsencesarelimitedtofourreasons:

1. Personalillnesswhichconfinesyoutohome(i.e.anexcusedabsencefromschool)2. Adeathinthefamily3. Religiousholidays(mustbepreapprovedbythedirectoratleasttwoweeksinadvance)4. Approvedprearrangedabsencessubmittedinwritingatleasttwoweeksinadvance

Allotherabsencesareconsideredunexcused.AnystudentwhomissesarehearsalmaybeprohibitedfromparticipatinginthenextperformanceiftheDirectorand/orstafffeelsthestudentisnotadequatelyprepared.Unexcusedabsenceswillresultindisciplinaryaction:

• FirstOffense:StudentconferencewiththeDirector,phonecalltotheirparent,and15pointsofftheirparticipationgrade.

• SecondOffense:Suspensionfromoneperformance,15pointsoffthestudent’sparticipationgradeandnohigherthana“B”inband.

• ThirdOffense:Expulsionfromthegroupandagradeof63/Einband.

Performances

Becauseeverystudentiscriticaltothesuccessofthegroup,anystudentwhomissesaperformancewithoutcausewillreceiveagradeof63/Einbandforthatcurrentfirst9-weeks.

Class Requirements and Expectations ThestudentsatTallwoodHighSchoolareallyoungadults,andareexpectedtoactassuch.Toensureahealthylearningenvironmentforallstudents,thefollowingprocedures,expectationsandrequirementsareexpectedofallstudents.Iwilltryandupdategradesonaweeklybasis.

Seating Arrangements

Standsandchairsaresetupinaspecificseatingarrangement,andshouldnotbemovedunlessinstructedbythedirector.Studentsshouldenterandexittherowsofchairsthroughtheendsofeachrow,neverthemiddle.Forthesafetyofallstudents,books,instrumentcasesandotherbelongingsshouldbeplacedoutofthewayinadesignatedareatopreventblockingtherows.

Classtime

Studentsareexpectedtoenterandexitthebandroomorauditoriuminatimelyandorderlyfashion.Gum,foodanddrinks(exceptwater)arenotallowedandwillbeconfiscated.Repeatedviolationswillresultinadisciplinaryreferral.

Whenthedirectortakesthepodium,studentsareexpectedtobeintheirseatsandpreparedtostartclasswiththeirinstrument,musicandotherclassmaterials.Anystudentnotintheirseatontimeandpreparedwillbecountedtardyandtheirgradereduced.

Instrument Storage

Whennotinuseduringclass,instrumentsshouldbestoredintheirassignedshelvesorlockers.Thebandroomwillbeopentostudentseachmorningandafterschooltobringandtakehometheirinstrument.Nopersonalitemsshouldbestoredintheinstrumentstoragecloset.Anypersonalitemsfoundintheinstrumentstorageclosetwillbethrownaway.

Allstudentsareexpectedtotaketheirinstrumentandmusichomeeachday.Itisimpossibletopracticeathomewhenyourmaterialsareleftatschool!Studentswhohavelargeinstrumentswillbeprovidedasecondinstrumenttokeepathome,ifoneisavailable.Anystudentwholeavestheirinstrumentatschoolovernightwithoutpermissionwillhavetheirgradereduced.

Hall/Restroom Passes

Studentsarenotpermittedtoleaveduringclassunlessitisanemergency.Allrehearsaltimeisvaluable,andwithoutafullclass,theensemblesuffers.Intheeventofanemergency,studentsmustfilloutapassbeforeapproachingthedirectorforpermissiontoleave.

InaccordancewithTallwoodHighSchool’spolicy,nostudentwillbeexcusedtogotoguidanceoranadministratorwithoutawrittenpassfromguidanceoranadministrator.

Equipment and Equipment Care EverymemberoftheTHSBandassumesresponsibilityfortheequipmenttheyusethroughouttheyear,regardlessofwhetherthatequipmentisownedbytheschoolorthestudent.Topreventunintentionaldamage,nostudentispermittedtouse,playortryanotherstudent’sequipmentatanytime.

Additionally,therearespecificguidelinesfortheupkeepofeachinstrument.Someitems(indicatedbyan*asterisk)mayneedtobepurchasedifthestudentdoesnotownthem.

Instrumentsshouldbeswabbedaftereachuseusingacleaningrodwithcottonhandkerchief*.Instrumentsshouldbepolishedbeforeeachperformanceusingapolishingcloth*.

Brass Instruments

Allvalvesandslidesmustbekeptlubricatedwithvalveoil*andslidecream*.Tubingshouldbecleanedonceaweekusingwarmwaterandasnakebrush*.Mouthpiecesshouldbecleanedonceaweekusingamouthpiecebrush*.Instrumentsshouldbepolishedbeforeeachperformanceusingapolishingcloth*.Sousaphonesshouldremovethemouthpiece,bitsandneckpriortoputtingtheinstrumentinitscase.

Color Guard

Flags,weapons,andpropsmustbecleanedofdirt,mudandwateraftereachuse.Tapeshouldonlybeappliedasinstructedbyastaffmember.EquipmentandcostumesshouldbekeptcleanandwillbeassignedandmonitoredbytheBandBoosters.Allequipmentandcostumesmustbereturnedattheconclusionofthemarchingseason.

Grade Evaluation GradesaredeterminedinaccordancewithVirginiaBeachCityPublicSchools’GradingScale.

Mr. Rossettini’s Philosophy

Acooperativeattitude,goodbehaviorandconsistentimprovementarecrucialtoahealthylearningenvironmentforallstudents.StudentsmusttrulytrytomakelessthanaCinband.However,eachyearstudentsfailbandbecausetheywillnotfollowtherulesandmeetclassexpectations.Iwilltryandupdategradesonaweeklybasis.

Eachstudent’sattitudeandperformanceaffectstheentireensemble.Asateam,oureffortsmustbecooperativeoreveryonesuffers.Thestudent’sgradereflectsboththeirattitudeandeffort.

Performance Grades

Allstudentswillhaveatleasttwoperformancegradeseachgradingperiod.Thesegradesmaybecompletedinavarietyofways,includinganythefollowingactivities.

• Regularprivatestudywithanapprovedtutor.Thetutormustfilloutanevaluationsheet.• ClassRecital.Recitalmaybeperformedasasolo,duetorsmallensemble.• All-DistrictBandEvent.AllstudentsinSymphonicBandorWindEnsemblearerequiredtoaudition,unlessexcusedbythedirector.

• TallwoodHighSchoolBandsConcert.InappropriateattireINCLUDINGFOOTWEARforboysandgirls.

• DistrictBandAssessment• GraduationPerformance• TermPaper.Papersmaybeonanapprovedperformance-relatedormusictechnologyrelatedtopic.Allpapersmustbethreepages,typedanddoublespaced.

Inaddition,allstudentswillperformindividually—sometimesinfrontoftheclass—asagradedexercise,toascertaintheircurrentperformancelevelortodeterminesectionseating.Theseauditionsusuallyincludemajorscales(includingrudimentsforpercussionists),assignedmusicandsight-reading.

Attendance

Studentsareexpectedtoattendallscheduledrehearsalsandperformances,andwillbegradedaccordingtotheattendancepolicysetforthinthishandbook.Bandisanacademiccourse,andwillbetreatedassuch.

Atseveralpointsduringtheyear,allbandclassescometogethertoperformasagroupatschool-sponsoredspecialevents.Allstudentsarerequiredtoperformattheseevents,includingconcerts,DistrictBandAssessment,andgraduation.Anystudentwhodoesnotperformatgraduation,excludinggraduatingseniors,willreceiveagradeof63/Eforthesemester.

Make-Up Work

Anystudentexcusedfromarehearsalorperformancewillberequiredtomakeupanyworktheymissed.Make-upworkmustbecompletedwithinoneweekoftheabsence,orwithinoneweekofreturningtoschoolfromanextendedabsence.

Amissedperformanceorrehearsalmaybemadeupbyeitheranindividualperformanceofallmusicfromtheperformanceorrehearsalinfrontoftheensembleorthedirector,oranalternateassignmentatthedirector’sdiscretion.

Practice Records

Allstudentsmustfilloutapracticerecordeachweek.Studentsarerequiredtopracticefivetimesperweekforatleast30minuteseachday.Acceptedpracticedaysbeginat30minutes:45minutesonedaydoescover15minutesthenextday.Afterschoolrehearsals—suchasmarchingband,jazzensembleorconcertrehearsals—maybecountedaspracticetimeforthatday.Performancedaysdonotcounttowardpracticerecords.

TallwoodHighSchoolrequiresthatallstudentstofulfilltheirfinancialobligationtothebandprogrambythesetduedates.Anystudentnotfulfillingtheirobligationwillnotbeeligibleto:

What to Know for Band Camp Time Studentsshouldbeonthefield,readytoplayatthescheduledtimes.Arriveearlysoyouhavetimetoprepareandgettothefieldontime.

Meals

StudentswillNOTbeabletoleavetheschoolformeals.Werecommendyoupackacooler;wemaybeofferingtheconcessionstandagain.

Attire

Studentsmustwearshorts,awhitet-shirt,socksandsneakers.Jeans,flip-flopsandsandalsarenotallowed.Studentsmaywearalightweighthat(noDo-Rags)andshouldbringasparepairofsocksincaseofrain.Ifdressedinappropriately,youwillbeaskedtofindachangeofclothes.Ifyoucannot,onewillbeprovidedforyou;theDramadepartmenthasplentyofcostumes!

PatrickDermody,andCameronRichardsonwillworkwiththepercussion.PatrickandCameronarealumniofTallwoodHighSchoolandarebothin-demandpercussionperformersintheHamptonRoadsarea.

RonnieCollinswillonceagainbeleadingupthevisualcomponentoftheMarchingLionsGuard.Ronniehasbeenanintegralpartofthebandprogramsincejoiningus5yearsago.

The Marching Lions Uniform TheuniformoftheMarchingLionshasbecomeasymbolofthedisciplineanddedicationofitsmembers.Tomaintainthisreputation,therearecertainrulesforwearingtheuniformproperly.Theserulesaremeanttopromoteprideandrespectinthoseprivilegedtowearit.

Uniform Parts

Marching Performance Procedures Duringperformances,eachstudentnotonlyrepresentsthemselvesandtheband,butalsoTallwoodHighSchool,thecommunityandtheVirginiaBeachPublicSchoolsSystem.Studentsareexpectedtoactliketheyoungadultstheyare.AllstudentswillabidebytheVirginiaBeachPublicSchoolsCodeofConductandCellPhonePolicy.

Before We Depart

• Studentswillarriveinthebandroomatthedesignatedtime.• Thebandstaffwillperformabriefinspectionofeachstudentastheyexitthebandroomto

loadthebuses.• UnlesstheDirectorinstructsotherwise,allstudentswillweartheuniforminitsentirety.Hats

andgloveswillberemovedonlyifinstructedbytheDirector.

While We’re There

• Allmarchingbandmembers,includingtheColorGuard,willsitintheirassignedsectionranksandmaynotswitchseats.Uponenteringthestands,studentswillremainstandinguntiltheDirectorseatsthem.

• Non-bandmembersincludingalumniarenotpermittedtositwithintheband.Reservedseatingisavailablearoundtheperimeteroftheband.

• Throughoutthedurationoftheperformance,studentswillfollowanyandalldirectionsgivenbytheDrumMajor(s)andDirector.

• TheBandwillactasasingleunit;allmemberswillstandandsittogetherasinstructed.• Wheninthestandsatfootballgames,payattentionandbereadytoplayatamoment’snotice.

Wewillnotplaywhensomeoneisinjured,orwhenplayingmightinterferewiththegame.• Everyconsiderationwillbemadeforrestroombreaks.Studentsmustaskpermissionbefore

usingtherestroomandmustbeaccompaniedbyachaperoneoranotherbandmember.

When We Leave

• Aftertheperformance,studentswillremainseated.TheDirectorwilldismissthemrow-by-row.• Oncewereturnhome,thebandwillbedismissedonceallequipmentisproperlystored,

uniformsareproperlyhungandstudentsareseatedandquietinthebandroom
