Uses of the Subjunctive

Uses of the SubjunctiveThis slide show will help explain when to use the subjunctive/subjuntivo in SpanishThis will explain when to use the subjunctive mood. You should already know how to conjugate the subjunctive in the present. 1Subjuntivo: UncertaintyDudo que ella baile.(I doubt that she dances.)

8Mood describes how the speaker feels about the action.

Im sure! The mood describes how the speaker feels about the action. He may not know if the action will take place or he may want the action to occur. 3Every verb has a tense and a mood.

Im sure!Pretrito/ ImperfectoPresenteFuturoEvery single conjugated verb expresses a mood and a tense. 4You know one mood.

The Indicative/El Indicativo

Ella baila. Up until now, you have only learned one mood. The indicative El Indicativo. Ella baila. or She dances. These are conjugated with the ar, -er, and ir endings that we have learned. Ella baila. simply represents that she dances. 5The Indicative/El IndicativoFactCertaintyObjectivity

The indicative mood is used to present factual information, certainty, and objectivity. 6New Mood: Subjunctive/SubjuntivoDoubtUncertainty Subjectivity??????The subjunctive mood is used to express everything except certainty and objectivity: things like doubt, uncertainty, subjectivity, etc.7Dudo que ella baile. Did you notice that baile has a different ending than normal?

YesDudo que ella baile. Did you notice that baile has a different ending than normal?

This marks the subjunctive mood. IndicativeSubjunctiveThe ending that looks opposite than what weve learned marks the subjunctive mood. You should already know these. Presente del Subjuntivo-ar: -e, -es, -e, -emos, X, -en-er/ir: -a, -as, -a, -amos, X, -an10Dudo que ella baile.

doubtDudo introduces a level of uncertainty. Since the above statement does not express certainty, the subjunctive (baile) is required in the second clause.

11Dudo que ella baile.Main ClauseDependent ClauseNotice:Notice that the subjunctive appears in the dependant clause while the indicative is still found in the main clause. Dudo = I doubt the speaker is in essence saying, Im sure that I am uncertain as to whether she dances or not. Which shows why the indicative is found in the main clause but not the dependent. 12Se que ella baila.vs.Dudo que ella baile. Now Compare:The first sentence expresses certainty, but the second expresses uncertainty. Se que ella baila. = I know that she dances. Dudo que ella baile. = I doubt that she dances. (See next slide)13vs.certaintyuncertainty

The key is in the main clause. Se versus dudo.14Se (que ella baila.)vs.Dudo (que ella baile.)certaintyuncertainty

The key is in the main clause. Se versus dudo. When the main clause has a verb that expresses uncertainty or doubt, the subjuntivo is required. 15Subjuntivo: Subjectivity

Verbs of Volition (Desire)Quiero que Juan vaya a la tienda.(I want Juan to go to the store.)quiero, quiero, quiero, quiero, quiero, quiero!Verbs of volition = verbs of desire (querer, desear, preferir, esperar, etc.) The sentence is constructed with a verb of volition in the main clause (using the indicative mood), and a verb in the subordinate clause (using the subjunctive mood.) 16Prefiero que pinte la pared rojo.(I prefer that he paints the wall red.)

17Deseo que alguien me traiga flores.(I wish that someone would bring me flowers.)
