Studies show that students who work a modest number of hours per week will on average:
Working students become better organized and manage their time better.
Employment exposes students to mentoring relationships.
Employment provides financial resources that may be critical to meeting college costs.
Why are student employeesso successful?
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each term to be employed.
Students must be a degree-seeking student at SPC.
Academic GPA must be 2.0 or meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress.
General Requirementsfor student employees
If you drop a class during the term, you must notify your supervisor immediately. ◦ If you are not enrolled in a minimum of six
credit hours, you are ineligible to continue your employment.
You are not allowed to work during hours you have scheduled classes.
All students should sign in and out of the office to record their work hours. ◦ Ask your supervisor for the Sign-in procedures
for your department.◦ Consult with your supervisor to determine your
work schedule.
General Requirements for student employees (continued)
When you have been authorized to work, your supervisor will request SPC Network access for you.
You will log on to MySPC to report your hours worked through “WebTime”.
It is your responsibility to know your maximum amount of earnings each year or term, and to Not Exceed that Amount.
Your bi-weekly paychecks will be deposited directly into the bank account you identified on your Direct Deposit form. ◦ * Be sure that you provide accurate bank
routing and account numbers. You may use your SPC One account.
Timesheets and pay
Student employees are employed on an as-needed, temporary basis. Continued employment is at your supervisor’s discretion.
Examples of Behaviors that may result in disciplinary action or termination:
Excessive tardiness or absences Sloppy and/or unclean appearance Inappropriate conduct including profanity, physical
violence, sexual misconduct, and harassment Rudeness or failure to work well with fellow
employees Theft of time (reporting incorrect hours) or college
property, including office supplies Phone and computer use not related to assigned
duties
Employer expectations
At a minimum, SPC expects you to report to work promptly, be dressed appropriately, be able to retain training information, and to ask questions if you need clarification.
If you are going to be late or need to be absent, notify your supervisor as soon as possible; please do not leave a voicemail.

Take notes and ask questions Student employment is not study hall.
◦No homework is to be done during scheduled work hours.
It is not acceptable to download any programs to SPC computers.
Cell phone use, text messaging, Instant-messaging should be used only on breaks outside of the office.

Customer service
Generally, clothes should be clean, neat, and not have any holes in them.
Clothes should not exhibit questionable graphics or language.
Clothes you wear to socialize may not be acceptable wear for the workplace.
Be considerate of others and do not apply heavy fragrances.
Your supervisor will inform you of the proper attire for your specific work assignment. If unsure, please ask!

As an employee of SPC you are expected to understand that all materials handled are strictly confidential.
FERPA regulations are to be followed, your supervisor will review the regulations with you.
Breach of confidentiality will result in termination.
Confidentiality
A student employee who works 4 straight hoursmay be given a 15-minute paid break.
The supervisor determines when breaks are appropriate. Due to the work assignment, 15 minute breaks may
not be possible, especially during periods of heavy workload for the office.
Breaks cannot be taken at the beginning or end of a shift in order to arrive late or leave early.
It is expected that break periods will be taken about halfway through a shift.
Morning or Afternoon break:
It is recommended that any employee who works in excess of 5 hours at a time be given a 30-minute unpaid break or lunch period.
It is up to you and your supervisor to schedule lunch and breaks into your schedule.
Lunch breaks cannot be taken at the beginning or end of a shift in order to arrive late or leave early.
It is expected that lunch break periods will be taken about halfway through a shift.
Please discuss with your supervisor the department policy of drinking/eating at your work area and the appropriate location for eating.

Keep personal information up to date with your supervisor and SPC
Your supervisor should go over the job duties expected of you on your first day of your job.
Your supervisor should evaluate your performance at the end of each term to determine if you are meeting the expectations of the position.

You will sign an acknowledgement that you have attended/read and understand the information provided in the Student Employee Orientation.
Your signed Student Employee Orientation
acknowledgement will be collected and retained as a part of your employment file.
