UNCOVERwhat lies beneath

The new green foliage complimented the LED BryanHigh School sign atop the new awning and walkway. Ageometric bear greeted everyone at the door. Visible to any passer-by, it was a nice, modern cover foreveryone to see. However, just like a book—if one judgedit solely by its cover, they wouldn’t get the whole story. Todo that, they would have to dive into the pages, or in thiscase, the people, to UNCOVER the adventures inside. There was more to the school than just kids wandering the halls trying to graduate, or staff members droning on during lectures. The halls and classrooms held the future. The girl who stayed up all night to ace her classes, she wanted to be a scientist. She dreamed of changing the world. The

boy who played sports year-round could hardly contain hisexcitement when he earned a full ride scholarship to playball. His dream of going to college turned into reality. Thegirl with crazy colors in her hair and the cool shoes, sawvisions of her designs making it on a runway. They, and all of the people in the school found likes, dislikes and passions in this building. But it wasn't thebuilding that was impressive, people and the cultures theycreated were. Inside these pages are the stories of real events and rawemotions of Bears. Whether it was a story of struggle andperseverance, a comedy between friends or a heartwarmingtale of relationships built, they were all chapters in each ofour lives that were told throughout the year. This is Bryan UNCOVERED.

SLIME TIME During her honors chemistry class on Aug. 28, Areem Zahid (10) measures out water to make slime. It was the first lab of the year and it was used to show students the lab process and how to follow lab instructions. "It helped me know why specific measurements are important," Zahid said. " I got more knowledge over why it's so important during labs to have correct, precise measurements."

PAINTING FOR PEP Painting "South who?" on his car window, ShemarToussaint (12) participates in the car rally before the Sept. 6, varsity footballgame against Omaha South. After the group of students decorated their cars, they caravanned to Collin Field for the game. "I thought that the caravan was asuccess because everyone was having a good time," Toussaint said. "It createsthose memories you will never forget." (Photo by Ashley Roth)

Looking at the students who walked the halls, anyonecould instantly see that numerous races andbackgrounds were present in the school. There weremixtures of cultures from all around the world, andthey all came together. From working together in theschool play, dancing together at homecoming, workingat a job together, hanging out after school and on theweekends to the blossoming of relationships, students'lives blended together regardless of racial, religious, andcultural backgrounds. They created their own culture—Bear culture. That community was not only unique tothe building, but the name, and the people. Thatcombined culture is what defined us, and it's what wasleft behind.

"The people here are very welcoming. they are justdifferent from other schools, because we are morefriendly to each other."

- Alexis Schovanec (9) "I'm especially proud of our diversity. It gives us theopportunity to grow together instead of separating eachother based off of labels."

- Mitzy Salinas-Gomez (11) "We have such a strong culture here. Everyone knowseveryone and we can all come together for support, andwe all stick together."

REALlifeproblems

Beneath their masks, Bears deal with pressures of life

LIFEALTERINGDECISIONSNEXT BIG STEP Speaking withGabrielle Rickley (counselor),Alyssa Husser (12) has her seniormeeting on the morning of Sept. 17.Husser and Rickley discussed whatcolleges she wanted to apply to,reviewed how to find scholarshipsand looked at recommendationrequests for scholarships. However, political issues and questions aboutone’s future were not the only things weighingpeople down. Several had to deal with difficulthome situations. From having sick familymembers, to dealing with poverty, to being scaredof ICE taking family members away and muchmore, students were dealing with big issues thatthat impacted their daily lives. Junior Carlos Jimenez-Fuentes had many reallife issues that many did not see beyond thesurface. Jimenez-Fuentes’s aunt, a very closefamily member, passed away from cancer. Losingher was difficult. It was a pain that stuck withhim, so he decided to get a tattoo to honor her. “She was kinda like my second mom youknow, like I grew up with her," Jimenez-Funentessaid. "If I wasn’t at my crib I was at hers, so I grewup around them a lot and when she passed it hithard.” Jimenez-Fuentes got a tattoo of his aunt’sname, Ivonne, on his arm next to a rose. Regardless of what issues students and staffmembers were going through, it was clear no onewas alone on the struggle bus. Everyone wasgoing through something, yet they kept going.

RACIAL JUSTICE

SATURDAY SPECTATORS Attending theremembrance event for Will Brown, a man whowas wrongfully lynched 100 years ago, NicholasWennstedt (social studies teacher), NicholasClawson (social studies teacher) meet up withEsmeralda Rodriguez-Menjivar (2019 alumna). They heard speakers encourage awareness andeducation of the community's racist history. Theevent on Sept. 28, spoke about the history ofWill Brown's falsely accused crime that tookplace at Douglas County Courthouse in 1919.(Photos courtesy of Nicholas Wennstedt)

A past issue addressed one hundred years later

Walking down the hallway, it was seen. Theweight that was carried on the shoulders of somany. For most it was obvious who was burningthe candle at both ends. There were bags undertheir eyes, a slouch to their posture, indicatingthe pain and exhaustion they were going through. But for others, the weights they carried weren’tas obvious. They wore a mask to hide the amountof stress and struggle they were going through. For seniors, a cloud of stress hit them as theyentered the counseling office and they faced thefact that their high school years were close tobeing over. They had to make real-life decisionswhich would impact their futures like decidingon what college to go to, to what career theywanted to go into and realizing they were aboutto be adults. The stress hit everyone differently.Senior Shemar Toussaint, talked with friends torelieve the stress. “I think I’m in a love triangle or square withcolleges,” Toussaint joked with them. On top of deciding personal futures, a majortopic of concern for many was the 2020presidential election and all of the political dramaof the year.

AAcademics

MAP tests, ELPA21 tests, Pre ACT and the ACTwere all standardized tests that were designed tomeasure students' knowledge and proficiency of coresubjects like math, science, writing, and reading. Thosescores were released to the public and they determinedwhat the public thought of the school and its students, but what those numbers did not show was unreal.

They did not show that 45 percent of our studentswere fluent in another language other than English and that they were learning it as a second or third language. They did not show how students managed tobalance their classes and homework on a nightly basison top of working a job or watching their youngersiblings at night while their parent/s went to work. They did not show the resilience and grit our studentshad and how they overcame obstacles to be successfulacademically and beyond.

"I hope they [my classes] will help me long termwith getting into military academy after high school bykeeping good grades and being in sports."

- Isabel Stewart (10) "My education class can help me in the futurebecause I'm gonna be an educator in the future andthat's gonna help me out; drama so I won't be a boringteacher and marketing so I get to sell stuff... It's beenreally exciting, I've gotten involved a lot this year."
