PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It is hard to believe we are just over half way through Term 4. Where has the year gone, let alone this term? The school has been a hive of activity and the children have been working hard as the year draws to an end. I am excited to announce that Mrs Brown will be returning to Riverbank a little sooner than we had hoped. We will see her on a full time basis from Monday 14 December. Remembrance Day Service Remembrance Day is a day of special significance to all Australians, commemorating the loss of Australian lives in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. Our thanks to our School Leaders for leading a moving virtual service to remember the sacrifices of all serving men and women.
Parent Portal – reports
After consultation with the community at a P&C meeting during Term 1, we advised that semester
reports were going to be moved online. Semester 1 reports were still printed due to COVID and the
simplified report structure. In Semester 2, reports will not be printed and will only be available
online using the Parent Portal. The Portal allows parents to view their child’s attendance data,
review their reports previously published on the Portal and available NAPLAN data. All families
received a letter with student access keys during Week 3 of Term 4. Parents and carers who have
not yet accessed the Parent Portal, are encouraged to sign up over the next week so that they are
ready for when reports are available in Week 9.

Cooler Classrooms
The Cooler Classrooms Program is a $500 million, five-year investment by the NSW Government to
improve learning environments in public schools across NSW. At RPS, the program will deliver air
conditioning and fresh air ventilation in 21 classrooms and library spaces. Installation works began
on 26 October 2020, with work taking place between 6am and 6pm Monday – Friday and 7.30am
and 3.00pm Saturdays. It is estimated that construction works may take up to 22 weeks with an
installation plan in place to minimize disruption to our classrooms.

Wattle seeds This month, One Giant Leap Australia Foundation are sending wattle seeds to the International Space Station in collaboration with JAXA. The seeds will be in space for 6 months and then return to Australia in time for Science Week 2021. Supported by the Australian Space Agency, the “What’ll happen with the wattle??!’ program was offered to 150 schools across Australia. We recently entered a submission to take part in this program and are excited to announce that we were successful and these seeds, along with ones germinated on Earth, will be planted in our garden to see if there is any difference in the way they grow. Part of our submission was a video to show why Riverbank would be a suitable Earth-bound resting place for the wattle. Students worked very hard to make the video as creative as possible. This can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPRgcYOWHzU&feature=youtu.be
We hope you enjoy “What’ll we do with the wattle?”
Music: Count Us In
You Won’t Bring Us Down – RPS celebrated music education in Australian schools through Music Count Us In. This year’s main celebration day took take place on Thursday 5 November where our students joined thousands of students across Australia at the same time by signing ‘You Won’t Bring Us Down’.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across Australia from 8 – 15 November to celebrate the
history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is
celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week
was a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support our local Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander community. The 2020 NAIDOC theme Always Was, Always Will Be

Circus Berserkus
Stage 3 students will be organising and running the annual Circus Berserkus. The money raised from this event will help to subsidise the costs of the Year 6 Dinner and the Year 6 gift to the school. Circus Berserkus is also an opportunity for all Stage 3 students to learn and develop the leadership skills required to organise and run a whole school event. Circus Berserkus will take place on:
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 - 24 November
Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 - 26 November Every child in our school is invited to attend Circus Berserkus at a cost of $5, for a day of fun. Stage 3 students are still selling Circus Berserkus tickets for $5 each before school under the Cola during Week 6. Year 6 Dinner We are looking forward to celebrating the 2020 Year 6 Farewell on Thursday 3 December at Castle Hill RSL. KindiFarm Incursion Kindergarten had their first incursion where the farm came to Riverbank. During Semester 1, students learnt about the needs of living things in Science lessons. Students were further able to learn about animals from the farm. Students had the opportunity to hold, feed and observe the following animals: calves, sheep, piglets, goats, rabbits, chickens and ducks. They discovered that some animals felt and sounded different from what they thought. There was also an opportunity to see sheep shearing and whip cracking. It was wonderful to see the students interact with the animals and they were so excited to ask and answer questions from the farmers. Kindergarten were very excited to go home and tell their families about what they saw.

2021 Kindergarten Enrolment
If you have a child starting Kindergarten in 2021, please contact our school office for an enrolment
form.
Bike and Scooter Safety
Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate
All bicycle and scooter riders are required by law to wear an approved helmet that is securely
fitted and fastened. We are observing an increased number of students riding bikes and scooters
with no helmets. If this continues, Executive staff will confiscate bikes and scooters which will then
have to be collected by a parent.
Planning for 2021
Mrs Brown and I are busy planning in preparation for next year. To allow us to plan as effectively as
possible, we would like those families who know they will not be returning to the school in 2021 to
confirm these details as soon as possible by returning the attached form. If you are aware that
your child will return to school late next year, I ask that you confirm these details immediately. It is
important for all students to return on day 1 of the new school year. Taking leave at this time of a
new school year can have a significant impact on the formation of classes and the school’s
enrolment audit. If you are taking leave please ensure you have completed the certificate for
extended leave travel no later than 1 December. Please remember the first day of the 2021 school
year is Friday 29 January for Years 1-6 and Monday 1 February for Kindergarten. We are
anticipating 1900 students, with 73 mainstream classes and 3 support classes.
Birthday Buckets
As part of meeting guidelines set by The NSW Department of Education and keeping students safe
in response to COVID-19, parents and carers are unable to send birthday treats to school to
celebrate their child’s birthday until further notice. We have worked with the canteen to develop
Birthday Buckets. Any families wishing for their child to celebrate their birthday at school can order
a Birthday Bucket through the canteen website. This needs to be placed at least 24 hours prior to
the day required.
Have a lovely fortnight.

Creative and Practical Arts (CAPA)
In Week 5 we had the School Photographer come to Riverbank to film all of our amazing dance groups, collect photos from our art clubs and mini films from our drama groups. In the next couple of weeks, we are excited to share our ’Virtual CAPA’ with the community. We are excited to showcase three of our Creative and Performing Art groups below.
Year 3 Art Club:
Year 3 Art Club have been learning about the life and art techniques of Vincent Van Gough. We
have examined his impressionistic strokes, bright contrasting colours and blending techniques. The
students are all very proud of the artworks they have made, inspired by some of his
famous paintings. Miss Renshaw and Mrs Jacobsen are very proud of their efforts throughout the
year!

Dropping Off and Picking Up students
A ‘Kiss and Ride Zone’ or ‘Drop-off and Pick-up’ area utilises existing 'No Parking' zones around
schools. In these areas, drivers may stop to drop off or pick up children, however No Parking rules
apply:
• Maximum stop time is 2 minutes
• Driver must remain in or within 3 metres of the vehicle
• Vehicle must not be left unattended
Additional safety tips for school zones:
• Always drop-off or pick-up your child from the designated area, following the school’s
procedures
• Make sure children use the footpath-side door when getting in and out of a car
• Make sure the hand brake is applied when the vehicle is stationary
• Never double park
• Never park across a pedestrian crossing
• Never undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school.
Safety Tips for Students:
• Stay buckled up until the vehicle has stopped in the ‘Drop-off and Pick-up’ area
• Make sure your school bag and other items are in a safe position, e.g. on the floor
• Be ready to get out of the car with your belongings when the car has stopped and you have
unbuckled your seatbelt
• Always get in and out of the backseat of the vehicle through the safety door - the rear footpath-side door.
No Stopping
What does it mean? You cannot stop in this area FOR ANY REASON (including queuing
or waiting for space).
Why is it there? Keeps clear sight lines between drivers and children/pedestrians.
Penalty $330 + 2 Demerit Points (School Zone)
No Parking What does it mean? You can stop in a NO PARKING zone for a maximum of two minutes to drop off and pick up passengers. If no spaces are available, you cannot queue on the road way or in any other zones while waiting for a space. You will need to drive away and park elsewhere, only returning when there is space to pull up. You must stay within three metres of your vehicle at all times.

Why is it there? To provide a safe place for children/pedestrian set down and pick up.
Penalty $183 + 2 Demerit points (School Zone)
Bus Zone
What does it mean? You must not stop or park in a bus zone for any reason (including
queuing or waiting for a space) unless you are driving a bus.
Why is it there? To provide a safe place for large buses to set down and pick up
school children.
Penalty $330 + 2 Demerit Points (School Zone)
Pedestrian Crossings You must not stop within 20 metres before a pedestrian crossing or 10 metres after a crossing unless there is a control sign permitting parking. Why is it there? To ensure that children can be clearly seen by vehicles
approaching the crossing.
Penalty $439 + 2 Demerit Points (School Zone).
Footpaths, Driveways and Nature Strips
You must not stop on any footpath or nature strip, or even a driveway crossing a footpath or nature strip FOR ANY REASON. Why is it there? You could easily run over a child or force pedestrians onto the
road to get around you.
Penalty $183 + 2 Demerit points (School Zone)
Double Parking
You must not stop on the road adjacent to another vehicle at any time even to drop off or pick up passengers. Why is it there? Double parking forces other cars to go around you causing
traffic congestion and reduces the view of drivers and children crossing the road.
Penalty $330 Demerit points (School Zone)
The school is very fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who assist in the safe pick-up of students
in this area. Please follow any instruction given to you by these volunteers in order to keep the
children safe.

Stage 1 have developed their animation skills to show movement of still

to ensure a smooth animation and transition between frames. They
have taken colourful cog wheels and animated them to roll across the
screen. Some clever students even made them change colour as they
rolled! This is a free app that students can download and use at home,

Stage 2 STEAM
Stage 2 have been busy in their classrooms making animations of the life cycles of a
chosen living thing! They have used the skills learned in STEAM, to show their under-
standing of living things and their life cycles through animation!
This past week in STEAM, students have created cartoons to tell a story. They have
used an app called Toontastic which is a playful storytelling app that scaffolds the
creative writing process and empowers kids to create their own animated cartoons.
Toontastic is great for sparking students’ imaginations and uses the Story Arc to help
frame their writing. Students have used the app for creating stories and science re-
ports and have had a great time doing so! We built cardboard ‘sound studios’ from
cardboard to amplify our voices and block out others as we recorded our dialogues.
