Do I dare say Spring is finally here?! WOW – what a LONG winter
season! We can only hope we have a long summer.
Starting the week of May 13th, the Meadows Mart store will be open
on TUESDAYS ONLY. We are going to try this for the summer, as
we see a decrease in shoppers during nicer weather. There is always a
weekly shopping outing each Wednesday morning for all to enjoy.
I want to highlight two wonderful services that are offered here to all
residents. The first is Personal Shopping. Cheryl shops HyVee weekly
for any residents needing items not found in our weekly Meadows Mart.
She can pick up toiletry items, groceries, etc. Please visit with Cheryl or
myself on how to get started. A HyVee gift card is required for payment.
You can have her personal shop for you weekly, or as frequently or
infrequently, as you desire.
The second service I wish to highlight is our Companion Services
program. You may hire a staff member to accompany you to any
medical appointments, shopping, or other outings. Please see the
nursing department or myself for further information. It’s a great benefit
for families who do not live nearby, and often wonder how the
appointment for Mom or Dad went, etc. We can be your eyes and ears,
and our nurses will report to you the findings if it is a medical visit. A
Personal Companion can also be hired to accompany you or your loved
one shopping, weddings, funerals, pretty much anything you can think
of.
As always, thank you for choosing to reside at Ecumen Meadows!

BUS RESERVATION INFORMATION
Please call to schedule your bus ride with Caryn at 372-7838, please do not call the bus phone to schedule. A 24 hour advance notice for non-medical appointments is necessary. The bus is busy each Wednesday morning for our scheduled shopping trips from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Please refrain from making appointments during this time. Bus hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. No Holidays
GUEST MEALS
Please give the Kitchen or Caryn advance notice (24 hours, if possible) if you will be having guests for a meal. The kitchen plans the meals in advance and has enough for residents and guests. If a last minute guest arrives, the cook has a right to refuse the guest due to the availability of food for that meal. Guest meal tickets may be purchased from Caryn or the Weekend Assistants at the front desk.
Regular meal tickets are $8 and Holiday meal tickets are $12.

Hello, April definitely proved to be a month of trials weather wise – hopefully, the snow piles
will be gone by the time you get this newsletter – April showers/snow bring May flowers,
right?
This month I will focus on another common elderly health issue which is mental health.
According to the World Health Organization over 15 percent of adults over the age of 60
suffer from a mental disorder. A common mental disorder among seniors is depression,
occurring in seven percent of the elderly population. Unfortunately, this mental disorder is
often underdiagnosed and undertreated. The most common symptoms of depression in the
elderly include: persistent sadness, feeling slowed down, excessive worries about finances
and health problems, frequent tearfulness, weight changes, pacing or fidgeting, difficulty
sleeping, difficulty concentrating and withdrawal from social activities.
Effective treatment of depression in older adults can require more than one approach.
Psychotherapy: Ongoing, talk therapy can be a source of support for elderly patients.
Support groups: Groups designed to connect older adults experiencing similar issues are
beneficial in establishing social support and providing a safe space to talk.
Medication: Antidepressants can be prescribed to relieve the symptoms of depression.
These can have significant side effects and elderly patients are sensitive to medications.
Medication should be monitored closely.
Lifestyle changes: Daily exercise, healthy eating habits, and increasing social support are
all important in helping the elderly with depression. Friends and family members can help
by doing the following: schedule group outings, establish a weekly visit, assist with
transportation to medical appointments, cook and freeze healthy meals for easy preparation
and help create a system to ease with taking medication regularly.

Page 6 Activities Page 3 Meet our newest residents, Dawne & Margaret!
You've probably noticed some new smiling faces gracing the halls of the Meadows recently.
Margaret and Dawne are two of our newest residents. Please introduce yourself to them if
you haven't already done so.
Dawne Mischke
Dawne, a Worthington resident, recently moved into
apartment 233 in the south building. Before retiring, she
worked as an accountant for nearly 30 years at Turbes,
Drealan, Kvilhaug & Company.
For fun, Dawne enjoys camping and she loves to quilt! She
is very talented and has made many beautiful quilts and has
a few works in progress too.
Dawne has a large family with 6 children, 12 grandchildren,
and 2 great-grandchildren. Her newest great-granddaughter
was born on April 24th!
There’s no “Yoke” about it, big or small, The Meadows love the Easter Bunny!
Margaret Slykhuis
Before moving into apartment 115 in the north building, Margaret lived in Brewster. She
helped her late husband Lloyd with chores and crops on their farm and at the same time,
she worked at an income tax and insurance agency. She also worked evenings at the Sioux
Valley Steak House.
Margaret has always had a love of music and she is a gifted
singer who sang with the State Chorus for 2 years. We're all
very lucky because she is going to share her talents with us
all as the newest member of the Meadows Choir!
Margaret has a big family with 5 children, 19 grandchildren,
6 great-grandchildren, and her first great-great-grandchild is
due to arrive on October 1st!
