Thirtieth-First Sunday In Ordinary Time 3rd / 4th November

‘How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news…’

Isaiah 52:7

This year’s Catholic Mission Church Appeal highlights the important work of Catholic Mission in Myanmar; through programs aimed to improve education for children, specifically through teacher training and the implementation of alternative, child-centred education around the country.

The theme of the appeal is ‘Healing a nation through education’. The theme reflects our mission as Christians to provide the tools and support to help those in need, and in doing so, announcing peace and bringing good news.

Seeing a need in his country for stronger education, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo S.D.B., Myanmar’s first Cardinal, initiated the teacher training programs and, with the support of Sister Grace Chia IJs and lay missionary Jacinta Cardoza, established a key training institute, Pyinya Sanyae Institute of Education (PSIE), in Yangon ten years ago. Today, the Cardinal remains a strong advocate for the education reforms currently underway in Myanmar through programs such as those run by PSIE and the Episcopal Commission for Education (ECE), and others that help heal and build a prosperous Myanmar through education.

The PSIE program trains aspiring teachers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge so they can bring modern, child-centred education methodologies to areas in need. Despite a high attendance rate for primary-aged children (90%), the secondary school attendance rate drops sharply to 58%*. This equates to fewer opportunities for young adolescents later in life. With your support in training skilled teachers, schools across Myanmar can be better equipped to provide quality education, affecting the lives of thousands of students.

The PSIE program consists of four years of training, including a two -year placement in a school environment in a different state. Upon graduation, teachers are posted to schools around the country where they can then positively shape the education of the local children.

St John’s School in Hakha, in the mountainous north of Myanmar, is one school now staffed by three teachers who have graduated from the PSIE program. These teachers, and two others from ECE, care for over 50 students ranging from Preschool to Year 1. Feedback from parents of the children attending St John’s is extremely positive; they are confident that their children are receiving quality education and care, and can see how their children are enjoying the interactive learning environment. …

In the words of Father Lucas, this is truly an “education revolution” in Myanmar, and you have the opportunity today to heal a nation through education by supporting this work through Catholic Mission’s Church Appeal.

PARISH COLLECTIONS: (27th / 28th October) $5545.30

Thank you for the continued support of your Parish.

SACRED SILENCE as part of the celebration, is to be observed at the designated times. Its nature, however, depends on the moment when it occurs in different parts of the celebration.

for in the Penitential Act and again after the invitation to pray, individuals recollect themselves; whereas after a reading or after the homily, all meditate briefly on what they have heard; then after communion, they praise God in their hearts and pray to him. Even before the celebration itself, it is a praiseworthy practise for silence to be observed...so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred celebration in a devout and fitting manner.
